Blue Virginia?

posted at 1:30 pm on March 24, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Back in early February there were some signs of movement in the polls in Virginia which were troubling to the GOP. Barack Obama carried the Old Dominion in 2008, but over the first two years of his presidency, his numbers had effectively tanked. But riding a wave of good headlines, it looked like he could be mounting a comeback of sorts at that time. A snapshot like that can always be an outlier, though, so more data was needed.

Two polls in the past five days – neither from sources with generally suspect sample rates – look like the poor news could be morphing into a trend. Quinnipiac (the same source as the February poll) has Obama leading Romney 50-42 with a 51% approval rating. Then, as we moved toward the weekend, Rasmussen (never shy about giving Republicans their fair cut in surveys) put the President’s favorability in Virginia at the 50% mark with a nearly identical 51-42 lead over Mitt.

Doug Mataconis sees trouble brewing, but far from inevitable.

Interestingly enough it doesn’t appear that Rasmussen even bother polling Santorum v. Obama in the Old Dominion. There’s still seven months to go, of course, and anything can happen but if this holds up the GOP is going to have a big problem to contend with in a state that it cannot afford to lose and in which the Obama campaign is already on the ground organizing. This isn’t an automatic win for Obama either, of course, and the numbers are likely to tighten when the General Election race actually starts.

We can’t lose sight of the fact that it’s not even April yet and conditions on the ground will continue to ripen. Those of us who have run campaigns will attest that seven weeks is forever in an election. Seven months is enough time for an intelligent species of poodles to rise up and take over the planet. But still, it’s always more helpful to look at the trend lines than any single snapshot, and in Virginia the numbers are currently going the wrong way.

Just last week Mitt said “who are the conservatives going to vote for? Sure they’ll vote for me”…to that effect. I am not inclined to look for link.

You know we’ll be at the barricades, together.

Still, Mitt and his adherents, not you, have done a very poor job of him listing 4-5 core beliefs, to make it easey to follow him, show a spine against Obama (too many examples to list to the contrary)…

His adherents, stop being so nasty. The other people are not hicks, contrary to assumptions…just because some might carry guns/bibles, or drive trucks and etc.

Here’s a crazy idea.

1. Romney stops telling conservatives to f**k off every day.
2. Romney starts attacking Obama instead of fellow Republicans

Right now the race is between a left wing Radical incumbent and left wing radical challenger. When all else is equal people stick with who they know.

angryed on March 24, 2012 at 1:47 PM

The only thing “crazy” is your psychological projection:

(1) You are the one telling Romney & his supporters (or Mittbots, Rombots, etc as you like to call them) to f**k off everyday coupled with lame threats to “not vote for Romney if he is the nominee” blah, blah, blah.

(2) Romney has been doing nothing but attacking Obama since at least FLA — of course, to know that, you’d have to actually listen to what he says on a daily basis, in his victory speeches, etc. but you’d rather wallow in your preconceived “Romney is the mirror image of Obama” ABRomney talking points than do that.

Every Centrist Republican has lost. McCain, Dole, Ford, GHW Bush,

Goldwater

.

Either you have all three legs of Conservatism or you lose every time.

Romney will lose with out any doubt. History tells us that.

He will most likely lose Georgia as there are many Evangelicals that will not vote for a cultist like Romney.

Steveangell on March 24, 2012 at 4:43 PM

First time I’ve heard Goldwater described as a centrist.

Again no Republican will lose Georgia. Even in a year that swung strongly democrat with John McCain running McCain still won by 5. While many Georgians, including myself, are not happy with Romney we were angrier with McCain. Saying Romney will lose or have to fight for Georgia is defeatist nonsense.

Dire Straits on March 24, 2012 at 6:02 PM

The Virginia Republican party has done this to their own greedy corrupt selves.

The buffer against the left leaning northern Virginia juggernaut which is being fed by big government was the relatively populous southeast.

BobbyMac has blown up that buffer with the introduction of onerous tolls on all the bridges and tunnels in the Southeastern portion of the state. The tolls are open ended meaning they can and will be raised with inflation.

Additionally, we’re going to be required to put tracking devices on our cars, which has a lot of people even more angry. The tolls will be collected by a contractor that has a repugnantly sweetheart deal allowing them to not only raise tolls but to keep collecting them for 60+ years. If the tolls are somehow rescinded the state still has to pay the company the revenues it would have gotten anyway.

This is going to seriously hurt the locals because the rivers, canals and bays make not crossing bridges multiple times a day impossible for a lot of people. I cross these thresholds 3-5 times a day going to work, school and home, more if I visit friends or shop. When the tolls go to 5 dollars a trip as is expected late next year or in 2014, I’ll be spending 75 or more dollars a week to make BobbyMacs cronies rich.

The dems could run zombie Hitler and many residents would vote for him just to hurt the republicans who allowed this atrocity to happen on their watch. The rage and feelings of betrayal down here are such that Bobby Mac has made southeastern Virginia implacably democrat for the next 60 years.

The fact that this hasn’t been mentioned in over a hundred comments is emblematic of the problem…. No one understands how big a thing this was down here, and takes us seriously.

I’m going to vote against Obama in November, but I’m likely to be very much in the minority.

I tend to see it the way you do, and that’s why I don’t want Romney, but the other candidates are really no better. I’ve voted in my primary. I’ve done my duty. I will hold my nose and mark my ballot for anyone but Ron Paul.

*sigh*

Here, too, but I’d have been happy for it to hold off ’til tomorrow. As is, the only way I know where the dogs are is by watching the grass rustle…

First time I’ve heard Goldwater described as a centrist.

midgeorgian on March 24, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Why I mentioned the three legs mostly him. He was socially liberal. Pro Abortion, Pro Prostitution. Libertarian on Social Issues really but he used this to claim to appeal to Democrats and Republicans considering himself Centrist.

Unlike the other four though the establishment did not want him but their candidate could not get enough support so Goldwater became the Nominee.

Interestingly Romney’s dad George never released his 58 delegates to any one and never endorsed Goldwater even though everyone else did. George loved North Vietnam after visiting it and said they would do a fine job running the South. Mitt was helping his dad then. That and Saul Alinsky being friends with George is why I suspect Mitt is a Marxist just like Obama. Plus Mitts actions in Mass.

Sorry for the slow reply, had just a couple more things to put away. 1969 John Deere 1020 diesel. Looks about like this one. Will pull the hinges off the gates of heII. Great little tractor.

Liberals are temporarily able to affect elections in states normally trending Republican. However, due to their low birth rates and love of abortion, the pendulum will swing back to our side and stay there, unless they are able to get illegals to take their place. Even then, within a generation or two, immigrant children will assimilate and vote for free market reformers. Let’s hope and pray that it isn’t over for our republic.

Neither side of my family would touch a John Deere. Then my aunt went and married a Deere guy…

Well, they are about the only real tractors left.

Oliver, IH, Massey Ferguson, Minneapolis Moline, even Ford, now them’s some tractors.

I agree with ya. Don’t forget Case. The very old. I should get some points for a ground up restore. I also have a very small IH. I use it for dragging the wood splitter around and turning the garden.

Dang me for forgetting Case, shame on me. My grandfather had one of those.

Rebuilding antique tractors is what my dad does now. Its my duty, as a son, to keep the building from falling in on them. Dozens of tractors and the only work they do is pull wagons around at tractor shows, go figure.

Though we did use one of the Hefty’s as a snowplow last year, twice.

Georgia is next, soon there would be no path for republicans to win the presidency.

0bamaderangementsyndrom on March 24, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Eastern Virginia is strongly democratic, from Charlottesville to Norfolk. Of course, Richmond is predominantly black so it’s no guess as to which way they’ll vote. Nope, the state has lost its collective mind and will vote itself into penury and tyranny.

Well, I know someone who lives in VA who is was about as blue as they come. Between me and a mutual friend of ours, he has come to a rather rude awakening as far as where his politics will lead. Needless to say, he’s been re-learning a lot about economic and fiscal policy.

He’s now a card carrying member of the NRA, just to show how far he’s come.

There’s no way in hell he’s voting for Obama in November.

Anecdote, to be sure. But the awakening proceeds.

We have seven months, folks. I’m doing what I can. Are you?

Georgia is redder now than it was four years ago. Even in a huge democrat year Obama lost by 5 in Georgia. Republicans won 62% of the statewide vote in the house elections in 2010 compared to 54% in 2006 and 50% in 2008. If Obama gets even 44% of the vote I will be shocked.
