Blue Virginia?

posted at 1:30 pm on March 24, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Back in early February there were some signs of movement in the polls in Virginia which were troubling to the GOP. Barack Obama carried the Old Dominion in 2008, but over the first two years of his presidency, his numbers had effectively tanked. But riding a wave of good headlines, it looked like he could be mounting a comeback of sorts at that time. A snapshot like that can always be an outlier, though, so more data was needed.

Two polls in the past five days – neither from sources with generally suspect sample rates – look like the poor news could be morphing into a trend. Quinnipiac (the same source as the February poll) has Obama leading Romney 50-42 with a 51% approval rating. Then, as we moved toward the weekend, Rasmussen (never shy about giving Republicans their fair cut in surveys) put the President’s favorability in Virginia at the 50% mark with a nearly identical 51-42 lead over Mitt.

Doug Mataconis sees trouble brewing, but far from inevitable.

Interestingly enough it doesn’t appear that Rasmussen even bother polling Santorum v. Obama in the Old Dominion. There’s still seven months to go, of course, and anything can happen but if this holds up the GOP is going to have a big problem to contend with in a state that it cannot afford to lose and in which the Obama campaign is already on the ground organizing. This isn’t an automatic win for Obama either, of course, and the numbers are likely to tighten when the General Election race actually starts.

We can’t lose sight of the fact that it’s not even April yet and conditions on the ground will continue to ripen. Those of us who have run campaigns will attest that seven weeks is forever in an election. Seven months is enough time for an intelligent species of poodles to rise up and take over the planet. But still, it’s always more helpful to look at the trend lines than any single snapshot, and in Virginia the numbers are currently going the wrong way.

Yakko77 on March 24, 2012 at 3:29 PM

look on the bright side. even if were to win. he wont. but lets play pretned for a minute. he has a gop house +50 and 55 gop senators. ok, so whats he going to be “running”. answer: the same thing he is now, nothing. he has never run anything dude. all legislation was cooked up by harry and nancy. he never once engaged that process. and even with an obama 2012-2016 version he’d be there vetoing, and being overridden. exec orders all over the place, quashed by legislature. it would be a mess sure. but not calamity. total calamity. so theres that bright side. thats almost the worse case. but again, there is ZERO chance of that. he pulls 46% PV, and gets 180 EVs.

but of course there are folks who think romney is equal to obama around here. and theres that.

punchenko: i agree.

kelley in virginia on March 24, 2012 at 4:25 PM

Actually that would mean Obama would win by like 5%. Your forgetting to subtract from the Repub by default. That’s how national polls work. Plus you have to account for cheating and the like.

This is the kind of nonsense I’m talking about.

No, actually undecided voters break against the incumbent by over 80%, so since it is tied at 44% and 12% are undecided, between 9-10% would go to Romney, meaning he’d get over 53% of the vote.

But I’ve heard all sort of ridiculousness from our side, including that Obama will suspend elections.

This election is winnable, stop the loser talk.

Gov. O’Donnell nixed the intrauterine ultrasound.

Cindy Munford on March 24, 2012 at 3:09 PM

Yes, Cindy, which is why I described the bill that McDonnell signed as “watered down”. By then it was too late, the damage had been done, and 75% of the people I talked to were repeating versions of what liberal4life posted.

McDonnell really came out looking badly. He looked politically stupid for backing the original bill, and like a weakling for backtracking and signing the compromise. Nobody is happy with him. It’s too bad. I hope he can recover; he’s a good guy.

Had the bill sponsors led with the “watered down” version, we would not be having this conversation.

This is what I mean about politics being important. Letting Virginia go stay blue in 2012 because of a intrauterine unltrasound mandate, no matter how noble the cause, is not helpful to the larger struggle.

sharrukin on March 24, 2012 at 4:34 PM

With the GOP candidates slicing, dicing, and attacking each other Obama has been getting a free ride.

Most likely we will not see movement in the polls until the GOP starts focusing on Obama, his record, the state of the economy, and the state of the nation.

KOOLAID2 on March 24, 2012 at 4:39 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong, and maybe this has been pointed out already, but aren’t most early term abortions performed vaginally? So if the doc’s going to be in there anyway, how would performing an internal ultrasound be any more invasive than the actual abortion procedure? I had a uterine oblation last fall. The doc did an internal ultrasound to make sure there wasn’t anything going on that he wasn’t aware of – he found a polyp. He’d done at least two pelvics by that point and had not clue it was there until the ultrasound. It was found thanks to the ultrasound so he made a point to remove that at the same time. It went off for biopsy – all clear, thank God. There really could be unseen issues that could cause problems during the abortion process.

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!”– Upton Sinclair, Socialist

Most of those who vote in Virginia are dependent on the government–that great leviathan known as The Beltway. So it isn’t surprising that Obama has created his own VOTER BASE in the formerly great state of Virginia [which I personally love so much having grown up there].

Growfins was devastatingly stupid and quite evil if I recall correctly. libfreeordie is just an antagonizer and a moron. crr6 was a lost broad who had some legal classes at Heald College or something under her belt and thought that she knew it all. But at least she had some traces of common sense here and there even though the daily smack-downs by Del Dolemonte were legendary.

But liberal4life is in a class of her own. She can’t be real. If she is, the bar is set so low that we need a backhoe just to be able to get a glimpse of it.

Cindy from what I understand most abortions performed entail an ultrasound. But the patient is not shown their baby they are about to have killed. It is done in case something else is going on.

Bush won in ’04 by a 17 point margin. McCain won GA in ’08 by a 5 point margin. Clinton won GA in ’92 against a sitting GOP rino president. And the economy wasn’t even that bad. Now the GOP is going to try to run a New England Rino with a history of flip-flopping against a liberal incumbent who has shown an ability to do well in Southern lean-red states. GA is in play.

I doubt Mittens will lose GA but it will be close (1-2%) and he’ll have to spend money and time fighting there, meanwhile Obama won’t have to spend his time playing defense.

Your statistics are lacking. How do more people have medical insurance, when Obama’s program hasn’t kicked in yet? Actually, as of 2010, the number of uninsured is at an all time high. see here

When Barack Obama entered office in January, 2009, the labor force participation rate was 65.7%, meaning nearly two-thirds of working age Americans were working or looking for work.

When the recession supposedly officially ended in June, 2009, the labor force participation rate was still 65.7%.
The ‘No Unemployed Need Apply’ Problem Deborah L. Jacobs Deborah L. Jacobs Forbes Staff

In the latest, much celebrated, unemployment report, the labor force participation rate had plummeted to 63.7%, the most rapid decline in U.S. history. That means that under President Obama nearly 5 million Americans have fled the workforce in hopeless despair.

Just last month, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported finding 243,000 new jobs, they also reported in the same release that an additional 1.2 million workers had dropped out of the work force altogether, giving up hope under Obama. If labor force participation had remained the same in January, 2012 just as it was the month before in December, 2011, the unemployment rate would have risen to 8.7% in January rather than supposedly declining to 8.3% as reported.

I was shocked at the intensity of the reaction to the ultrasound debate. Normally rational, intelligent women (and men for that matter), hardly liberal by any stretch of the imagination, screaming that Republicans were poised to take them back to the stone age. Not Santorum, Republicans. Outlaw abortion, take away contraception, and by implication move on the right to vote. O.K., I’m exagerating about the last part, but not by much. Lots of anger, lots of ignorance. Nobody understood the HHS Mandate issue, which had been successfully tied by the Democrats to the ultrasound debate.

A very few states mandate transvaginal ultrasound for women undergoing abortion. A few more require the non-invasive version mandated here in the Commonwealth. A larger number require women to be offered ultrasound as an optional procedure before undergoing abortion. In short, there were better legal options for Virginia Republicans than the most controversial and invasive one when we were fighting a hugely important national battle relating to the Federal governments ability to force religious institutions to provide contraception to their employees.

At times like this we must argue, and fight, from general principles. That means no mandates, period. There are better ways to educate the populace as to the evils of abortion.

As the ABR’s have pointed out so astutely, it is very difficult to argue against a mandate, state or Federal, when you have one under your own belt.

so whenever blacks come up the words that you pop out are: welfare, unemployment, thugs, crooks and exploiters. but you really care about blacks having abortions and want more black babies born? why do I seriously doubt that? hmmm….

DBear on March 24, 2012 at 5:14 PM

You were the one who brought up the idea that nobody wants these black babies, therefore they should (continue to) be exterminated.

JannyMae on March 24, 2012 at 5:18 PM

No frickn way Obama wins my state. How soon people forget that Bob McDonnell beat Creigh Deeds by like 20 points in 2009.

stefanite on March 24, 2012 at 5:20 PM

so how many black babies have u adopted?

DBear on March 24, 2012 at 5:00 PM

My aunt and uncle have adopted two.

The fact that they have to do so shows how failed liberal welfare policies are and how liberals like yourself have destroyed black parents and families.

If liberal policies worked, there would be no unwanted black children. But as you yourself admit, your black community, 98% Obama voters, completely enslaved to the Obama Party and living under Obama welfare policies, annually produces hundreds of thousands of children that they don’t want.

northdallasthirty on March 24, 2012 at 5:21 PM

there’s no way the gun-crazy, selfish, warmongering “party of life” really cares about the unborn, I will never be convinced of that.

DBear on March 24, 2012 at 4:57 PM

Selfish? Nicholas Kristoff of the NYT even conceded that conservatives have been shown to be demonstrably more generous with both their time and their money than liberals.

Look for the column: “Bleeding Heart Tightwads” from December 2008. Liberals talk a good game until they’re asked to buck up. Then, it’s crickets…or calls for higher taxes so that government can inefficiently deal with social ills.

BuckeyeSam on March 24, 2012 at 5:23 PM

so you think businesses are lying about adding 200,000 jobs a month? meanwhile state and local governments are shedding jobs, some communist president!

DBear on March 24, 2012 at 5:04 PM

.
Local and state governments are required to operate under balanced budgets. Budgets are predictive based on revenue collected and revenue foreseeable. When the taxes, that is revenue collected, fall below the level required to maintain a balanced budget, people and service have to go. Revenues fall because the economy is declining, not growing! Foreseeable revenues (expected future revenues are based on the past record of revenue collection) predict the current revenues.
.
You don’t know anything, blabbermouth.

Because you are a complete idiot. I have and continue to help more blacks and other people than you ever will conceive of doing. I teach them ‘how to fish’.

You and yours create dependency. Get off the color scheme. I respect people, all people, if they earn it. I don’t judge them by color, sex, creed, religion or whatever your divisional approach is. Your oaf in chief could have changed the world for so many, if only. Instead he has set race-relations back by hundreds of years, and you dwell in that caca of his. Good luck to you, and to all you exploit in the modern day plantations. One day they’ll wake up and pitchfork you, as it s/b. I hope you’re in the first row then.

Here’s a crazy idea.

1. Romney stops telling conservatives to f**k off every day.
2. Romney starts attacking Obama instead of fellow Republicans

Right now the race is between a left wing Radical incumbent and left wing radical challenger. When all else is equal people stick with who they know.

welfare, unemployment, thugs, crooks, looters, exploiters, slavers, slavery, plantations, ignorant, dependent

am i missing any?

DBear on March 24, 2012 at 5:41 PM

Yup.

That’s because, thanks to liberal policies and liberal leadership, black people are more likely to be unemployed, more likely to be on welfare, more likely to commit fraud, more likely to commit crimes, and more likely to be incarcerated.

Furthermore, liberals like yourself hate any black person who does not obey or bow before white liberals like yourself; you call them oreos, Uncle Toms, and the like.

Your attempt to control the language is nothing more than an attempt to disguise your unmitigated failures. Thanks to liberalism and liberal policies, the vast majority of black children, presuming they survive your abortionist genocide, grow up in broken homes, poor, helpless, stuck in poverty, trapped in substandard schools, and doomed to prison or repeating the welfare cycle unless they are truly exceptional individuals who stop doing what liberals like you tell them to do.
