Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on March 23, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
Energy policy really isn’t Barack Obama’s forte, is it? No wonder Steven Chu keeps giving himself A grades on his performance; he’s leading the curve. Here’s Obama yesterday managing to screw up one of his standard claims about American oil capacity by confusing it with American oil production:
President Barack Obama’s struggled to defend his price-boosting energy policies during a speech in Cushing, Okla., today, even as rapidly spreading criticism and rising gas prices damage his poll ratings.
“He was incredibly defensive because little of what he says is true — that’s his dilemma,” said Dan Kish, a vice president at the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Energy Research.
Speaking off-the-cuff, Obama mistakenly said that “we only produce 2 percent of the world’s oil.”
According to the federal government’s energy administration, the United States produces 10 percent of the world’s production, making it the third-largest oil producing nation.
“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. … This is the most incompetent administration I’ve ever seen — and I started under [President] Jimmy Carter,” Kish said.
The formulation Obama wanted to use was a familiar talking point that asserts that the US only has two percent of the world’s proven oil reserves, not its production. Normally Obama doesn’t fumble that line, and he’s been using it a lot lately as gas prices continue to rise rapidly. Even that, though, relies on carving the truth up so finely as to be utterly misleading, as it relies on a government definition of “proven reserves” that includes several heavy qualifications, including whether the oil can be retrieved within current regulations.
Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kessler ripped Obama yesterday on this point:
As we explained before, “proven oil reserves” has a very strict definition, in part because reserves are considered actual assets owned by companies. The oil must have been discovered, confirmed and economically recoverable, with at least 90 percent certainty.
But in his Prince George’s speech, Obama claimed that even if “we went to your house and we went to the National Mall and we put up those rigs everywhere, we’d still have only 2 percent of the world’s known oil reserves.” In New Mexico, Obama declared, “even if we drilled every square inch of this country, we’d still only have 2 or 3 or 4 percent of the world’s known oil reserves.”
That’s just simply wrong. The United States has the same number of barrels of proven oil reserves — 22 billion — today as it did in the 1940s. That’s because new sources of oil kept getting found, more-difficult-to-obtain oil suddenly became more economically viable, new oil-extraction techniques gained favor, and so forth.
So, in light of the president’s statement in Prince George’s County (and in New Mexico), we are going to change our ruling to Two Pinocchios.
Either way, the President keeps misleading people … and this time managed to confuse even himself.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me atobamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Ed, Obama is not at all confused about his goal. It matters not how he gets there, as long as America is destroyed. He knows he can rebuild it in his image and likeness. That Obama logo will look great on our foreheads.

I think I’ve finally decided between the question of whether Obama-lama-ding-dong [My favorite, but President Downgrade and Captain Kickass are good too! :) ]is doing this (screwing up the economy) on purpose or is just inept and I think the answer is a bit of both.
He wants to change how this country was founded to be, but lacks the knowledge of how it actually WORKS in order to do so without us plebes figuring it out.
Still ABO 2012

Ever notice how President Obama seems most confortable talking about left wing stuff that he supposedly doesn’t believe in?
He has to lie on energy policy; if he told the truth, he’d lose in a landslide.

We are expecting you to, very soon, post a strong condemnation of Rick Santorum’s indefensible statement saying that Obama would be preferable to our inevitable Republican nominee.

As long as we get it done, no one has to die by rare freak-snowmobile-accident. :)

He is going around saying HIS administation is drilling more oil and laying more pipelines in the history of the world and all we get is 2%.I think we’ve been cheated.

we no longer need to see his grades. We’ve seen enough of his performance to know how he ranks amongst his peers….he thought he was 4th best…I’d say he’s 44th best.

To say BHO is incompetent is an insult to incompetence. You could lock this guy in a padded room with two solid steel globes and in fifteen minutes he would have lost one and broken the other. Lord help us if he is reelected.
ghostwalker1 on March 23, 2012 at 8:29 AM
Obama always doubles down. This pipeline will not get built while he is in office.
Ed, I’m still waiting for Obama to back away from that catholic church abortion pill mandate. He doubled down as usual and waited out the storm. Unfortunately Rush provided the perfect distraction to that issue. So perfect that we are still talking about “civility” instead of tyranny.
Mord on March 23, 2012 at 8:30 AM
If we are going to get out petroleum of the future from algae (aka Pond Scum) how will it be transported?
Pipeline?
Tank Cars?
Ships (Tankers)?
Tank Trucks?
Will Algae produced oil be a pollutant if spilled from any of the above?
If so, any argument against the Keystone Pipeline is nonsense.

That’s actually pretty insightful. I believe it fits the facts a lot better than the standard idiot or evil genius dichotomy.

Why do you keep attributing to incompetence what are obviously deliberate lies?
The Rogue Tomato on March 23, 2012 at 8:34 AM
Seems pretty generous. In another, “If Bush had done it” moment, does anyone doubt that the statement would have been judged at four Pinocchios from the start?
AZfederalist on March 23, 2012 at 8:35 AM
“This is the most incompetent administration…”
The should be THE talking point with an ever expanding list of examples from now til the end of this administration.
JoeHanson on March 23, 2012 at 8:37 AM
I truly believe we are seeing the beginning of the meltdown. For all the distractions and shiny objects he keeps throwing out there, the economy, jobs, and fuel prices are burning through as the American public’s focus of attention. And he knows he’s failed on all three fronts and it’s becoming more and more obvious daily. He’s enjoyed living high on the hog for 3 years, pretending to be the president and the time is drawing nigh to pay the piper…and he knows his pockets are empty. He loses in a landslide in November.
Trafalgar on March 23, 2012 at 8:37 AM
You really should ditch the whole Obamateurism thing and replace it with “Bald Faced Lie of the Day”. That would be far more accurate and revealing of Obama’s true character. And he lies more often than he makes gaffes, so you’d have more from which to choose.
The Rogue Tomato on March 23, 2012 at 8:37 AM
So what? The morons who lap up PBHO’s spittle don’t give a flying fig newton about facts; PBHO could say that oil drilling caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and his minions would cheer and hoot in approval.

lynncgb on March 23, 2012 at 8:47 AM
True enough Bishop, there are plenty of morons still utterly enamored of the boy-prince and his unicorns. But there are also plenty of them looking around, wondering why they haven’t been able to find a job for the last three years, wondering why they lost their home, wondering why they can’t afford to put gas in their cars or pay for ever-rising food prices…and they’ll look around and realize that the banks, Wall Street, the global economy don’t have a damn thing to do with their lives…but that man on television, that man who promised us everything, has failed us. He’s the cause of all our grief.
Trafalgar on March 23, 2012 at 8:47 AM
When you are making it up as you go…or when you are lying on top of lies…sure, one is bound to get the narrative a bit skewed.
Just because he lies…constantly…
Just because Obama appears to be incredibly stupid…making GW look like a freakin’ Rhodes Scholar magna cum laude type…
Just because Obama’s programs, policies, judgement and coterie of “friends” he draws upon for advice and comfort are rapidly turning this Nation into just another Third World despot hell hole…
All this doesn’t make Obama a bad person, right????
Hell, yes it does!!

coldwarrior on March 23, 2012 at 8:57 AM
that would be true IF he didnt want the results he is getting. in this case he WANTS higher prices and lower production. so he is not incompetent; he is indeed achieving his gioals. he is simply wrong. and a liar. come on. if it was as simple as being incompetent and stupid, this would be easy.

As the constant misstatements by Teh Øne are recognized more and more as some level of competence less than optimum to get the job done, I hope it will bleed over into other aspects of his public statements. If he can be shown to be either incompetent or less than forthright with most of his statements then the American voter will not put up with that performance.
.
Yesterday he misstated the cost of a barrel of oil and today he doesn’t know the difference between production of percentage used and capacity of proven oil reserves. None of his numbers work and people still take a budget from his administration seriously. He and his advisers are truly out of step with what is required for today’s competent government administration which leads me to:
A i r b a l l Øblama, he shoots a brick, his only trick!

Oh man, that smack is gonna leave a mark.
Nice way to put it, Ed, even though the truth is Obama is just plain lying. When the truth is politically inconvenient, he lies. He subverts the truth in service of his lies. Sometimes little pieces of the truth are included, but only to give the lies the flavor of truth. For his sycophants and the brain dead knee-jerks on the Left, that is all they need to believe.
novaculus on March 23, 2012 at 10:09 AM
I think it’s time to start a mandatory competence test to run for or serve in any federal office. It needs to include questions on basic science, energy, math, economics, and finance.
I’d love to have one for voters-but that is unconstitutional. If we can set minimum age and residency requirements to serve, I think we should be able to require people (our employees, after all) to understand basic math and science concepts.
The level of idiocy in the White House, Congress and every federal agency is astounding.
Ivy league graduates seem exceptionally unfit.

Sadly, in today’s lib-controlled universities (especially the Ivies), a student (especially a favored minority — i.e. black, hispanic, or Muslim, but not Asian) need only be able to parrot back lib talking points in order to get good grades. So Obama’s grades really wouldn’t prove much, other than how well he had mastered the lib memes.
BTW, have you ever read that “letter to the Editor” that Obama published in the Harvard Law Review? American Spectator reproduced it in an article once, and it’s very interesting. The content is what you’d expect (it’s defending Harvard’s Aff*rmative Act*on policies), but what’s interesting is the writing itself is pretty poor. Run-on sentences, and one sentence with a dependent clause left hanging, so that the sentence itself made no sense. And that was an example of Obama’s best work — before publication, he would have had to proofread it several times. But don’t ever suggest that Obama is anything other than brilliant . . . or you’re clearly a raaaaacist.

Obama is such a bad joke on the American people. He not only doesn’t know what he’s talking about but when he jokes about “drillng on the white house lawn” it is just ridiculous!
The high gas prices are hurting struggling American families and the imbecile tries to make a joke about drilling. It is no joke! Americans aren’t laughing. Americans don’t want a fool who is going to tell them to inflate their tires, get a tune-up and put algae in their tanks.
jqc1970 on March 23, 2012 at 11:37 AM
And (as Kessler hinted) to “prove” the reserves requires actually doing some drilling. Geological surveys could say you have a billion barrels of oil sitting under you, but until you do some actual exploratory drilling, you can’t “prove” if its a billion, or only 800 million, or maybe 1.2 billion…
In other words, Obama “sees no oil” because he hasn’t allowed anyone to look.

The man…ahem, “under-achiever”, does not have the first clue about anything involving management. Without TOTUS, he can’t even manage a train of thought! He claims finding, starting, and saving jobs…yet his moratorium on offshore drilling cost the industry approx. 20,000 jobs…his refusal to allow the Keystone pipeline will cost another 20,000 jobs. and that doesn’t even mention the subsidiary jobs plus the oil that would be delivered to refineries after production began! Oh, wait…we aren’t supposed to be smart enough to figure this out…’scuse me!

That is “proven oil reserves”. Add potential or unproven reserves and we have trillions of barrels left to produce.
