Obama on Solyndra loan: “Understand, this was not our program per se”

posted at 3:30 pm on March 22, 2012 by Allahpundit

Buck-passing fun via Andrew Stiles and the Washington Free Beacon.

OBAMA: We are doing the all of the above strategy right. Obviously, we wish Solyndra hadn’t gone bankrupt. Part of the reason they did was because the Chinese were subsidizing their solar industry and flooding the market in ways that Solyndra couldn’t compete. But understand, this was not our program per se.

Congress–Democrats and Republicans–put together a loan guarantee program because they understood historically that when you get new industries–it’s easy to raise money for start-ups, but if you want to take them to scale sometimes there’s a lot of risk involved, and what the loan guarantee program was designed to do was to help start-up companies get to scale. And the understanding is that some companies are not going to succeed, some companies are going to do very well, but the portfolio as a whole ends up supporting the kind of innovation that helps make America successful in this innovative 21st century economy. Do I wish that Solyndra had gone bankrupt? Absolutely not. And obviously it’s heartbreaking it happened for the workers who were there.

If not for Congress, there never would have been any half-billion dollars to blow on Solyndra. So when you think about it, it’s really America’s fault, isn’t it? I wonder if that reasoning would work for a bank manager forced to explain why he made a terrible loan to a fledgling company with bad prospects whose board of directors just happened to include a buddy of his. It’s really kinda sorta the bank’s fault for offering loans in the first place, isn’t it? Never mind that the previous “bank manager” had enough sense not to throw money into this sinkhole the first time it applied for cash.

Needless to say, his whole argument is based on a lie. As Stiles notes, the money for Solyndra came from the stimulus, not the loan program established for clean-energy companies a few years earlier. And The One’s been perfectly content to point that out when it’s politically convenient for him: Watch the second clip below from the RNC (via Matt Lewis) for a little then-and-now. What a perfect little bookend this is to today’s other big energy charade, his attempt to pretend that fast-tracking the southern half of the Keystone pipeline — which doesn’t even need his approval — makes him some kind of warrior against rising gas prices or something.

Part of the reason they did was because the Chinese were subsidizing their solar industry and flooding the market in ways that Solyndra couldn’t compete.

Setting aside his blaming of the Chinese(I know, I’m shocked too), he’s basically conceding that Solyndra and the rest of the solar panel companies can’t compete because foreign competitors are able to produce the same product at a cheaper cost. And that’s despite over half a billion dollars in taxpayer subsidies propping them up.

So why then continue to p-ss away money we don’t even have in the first place with more of these green energy startups that have no hope of succeeding? The only possible explanation is that he’s handing out money to his cronies for political payoffs. If the companies manage to survive and create a few jobs, that’s just gravy for him.

That, plus the fact that The One is a progressive/ green “true believer” who thinks that “If we throw enough money at it, it will work- and at least the money will be going to a worthy cause”.

Progressives as a rule believe that if they want something to be true badly enough, it will be, facts and the laws of physics notwithstanding. And if it doesn’t, it’s never because their original theory was wrong; it’s because other people didn’t try hard enough, or believe hard enough, or give them enough money, or else they were sabotaged by those all-powerful, never-to-be-sufficiently-d***ed “reactionaries”- who, if they were as powerful as all that, would probably have done in the progressives a long time ago. (They’re “evil”, you know.)

We’re dealing with a bad combination of syndicalist socialism and pseudo-religious dogma, here. Which is why I don’t expect common sense to have any role’ whatsoever in this administration’s decision loop on energy, any more than it does on any other subject.

Peter Lynch, a New York-based solar energy analyst, told ABC News it took only a cursory glance through Solyndra’s prospectus to see there was a problem with their numbers.

“It’s very difficult to perceive a company with a model that says, well, I can build something for six dollars and sell it for three dollars,” Lynch said. “Those numbers don’t generally work. You don’t want to lose three dollars for every unit you make.”

Barry/Baraka, that Harvard genius who once worked on Wall Street (before selflessly pursuing “public service”), knew that it wouldn’t be a problem that Solyndra was losing money on every solar panel it sold — he figured they could make it up in volume!

Actually, Peter Lynch was wrong. You can make those numbers work — for a while anyway (long enough to make the key executives rich with generous salary and bonuses) — so long as you have an ignorant and crooked chump in the White House who’s willing to hand you hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.

But nobody can defend shoveling public money to contributors and bundlers with no reasonable prospect of success just because they are your contributors and bundlers. That is graft, pure and simple. Chicago on the Potomac.

I suspect he might be right. People who lean Left believe what they choose to believe regardless of facts, truth, or history. Many in the middle are too busy, lazy, or indifferent to question what the MSM tells tehm. The rest of us–those who oppose the President and his party–aren’t particularly effective when it comes to countering propaganda. The election in November will be a near-run thing–bad for us since all the Democrats need is to be within 5 points in the weeks before the election. Chicago writ large: whole armies of the dead will rise from their graves to vote Democratic, voting machines will experience inexplicable malfunctions, voter ID verification will be a joke, and groups like ACORN will be swarming the streets, rounding up newly minted voters with names like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse.

So yeah, either we get a reprise of the Reagan/Mondale blowout, a victory too big to cheat us out of it, or we get beaten by a handful of votes in the recount.

I’m not a pessimist. I’m a realist.

Hey Haiku Guy, where have you been? I was thinking just the other day that I hadn’t seen you around these parts for a while. Or was I just not paying attention? :-)

Can you come up with some poetry for us?

….and somewhere in Kenya, a small village cries out: “Help, we’ve lost our Idiot…he’s gone to America to occupy the Oval Office!”….

“But office, that meth in my car is not drugs, per se.”

obama is lying piece of garbage.

My new philosophy on people that those that refuse responsibility, and pass the buck, I have started calling them democrats.

ConservativePartyNow on March 22, 2012 at 4:33 PM

Congress–Democrats and Republicans–put together a loan guarantee program because they understood historically that when you get new industries–it’s easy to raise money for start-ups, but if you want to take them to scale sometimes there’s a lot of risk involved, and what the loan guarantee program was designed to do was to help start-up companies get to scale. And the understanding is that some companies are not going to succeed, some companies are going to do very well, but the portfolio as a whole ends up supporting the kind of innovation that helps make America successful in this innovative 21st century economy.

Last time I checked, there was an entire industry devoted to solving this problem and it was one that did NOT use my freaking tax dollars. Let’s see..what’s that called again?? Oh yes: VENTURE CAPITAL

If there’s a viable business model in solar panels, let private businesses & investors take the risk & get the reward. The last place I want my tax dollars to go is into some government run VC-ish entity trying to figure out how to pick winners and losers.

Losers picking losers

Tar Heel Sooner on March 22, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Solyndra was doomed to bankruptcy from the start.

If the Chinese can not produce solar panels that will complete with normal electricity sources it simply can not be done. They have no EPA,don’t care about heavy metal exposure or pollution, and they pay their workers a dollar a day and it still costs too much.

What’s that saying again? Oh yes, “Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.”

jrgdds on March 22, 2012 at 4:40 PM

Imagine! Those dirty rotten Chinese SUBSIDIZING an industry. Just like Barry did with Solyndra.

But Barry is not to blame. Others are ALWAYS at fault. The One commits no error. The Chosen makes no mistakes.

ALL HAIL THE OBAMASSIAH!
