After 21-hour siege, French cops finally move in on jihadi suspected in Jewish school shooting; Update: Cops suspend siege

posted at 7:52 pm on March 21, 2012 by Allahpundit

British media has been covering the standoff all day, replete with live updates at the Telegraph and Guardian. Follow those links for developments tonight; the latest as I write this is that French police have blown open a door in his apartment building after negotiating with him since 3 a.m. local time this morning. For background on the whole story, though, read CBS’s account. The total death toll: Three Jewish children, a rabbi, and three French paratroopers, at least one of whom was Muslim. And he allegedly had plans to go out and kill another soldier before the cops surrounded him.

The suspect has told police he belonged to al Qaeda and wanted to take revenge for Palestinian children killed in the Middle East, Interior Minister Claude Gueant said, adding the man was also angry about French military intervention abroad…

An Interior Ministry official told The Associated Press that Merah has been under surveillance for years for having “fundamentalist” views. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Merah is a self-proclaimed member of the Forsan al-Izza or “Knights of Glory” group, which the French government banned in January following suspicion that it was recruiting Jihadists to Afghanistan…

Gueant told reporters Merah is “less explicit” about why he killed French paratroopers. The paratroopers were of Muslim and French Caribbean origin, but the interior minister said the suspect told them the ethnic origin has nothing to do with his actions.

He traveled to Afghanistan two years ago and, according to a French prosecutor, trained in Waziristan, but apparently earlier reports about him having been jailed there as a jihadi fighter and then escaped in a prison break are incorrect. He’s not the only local who’s trained for jihad abroad either, per French counterterror officials. They’ve had their eye on a number of men from Toulouse and estimate that there are 30 or more across Europe who went to Afghanistan or Iraq and then came home. In fact, French intelligence already knew who the suspect, Mohammed Merah, was. How he managed to kill seven people, including three soldiers, over several days without anyone moving in on him is the big question mark right now.

Two interesting wrinkles in this case. One: Some major newspapers, including the NYT and the Guardian, were quick to suggest that the shooter must be part of the European far right. That’s not implausible after the Anders Breivik massacre, and anti-semitic attitudes in France are on the rise, but to leap to that conclusion after fully 10 years of western counterterror officials warning of homegrown jihadists is simply insane. (Ace speculates that the media thought it unlikely that a jihadist would target Muslim members of the French army and notes, correctly, that that assumption is doubly insane.) Which brings us to the other wrinkle: Does Merah’s M.O. signal a deadly tactical shift by AQ and affiliated terrorists?

In the intelligence world, they are known as the Nike terrorists, whose motto when it comes to committing acts of terrorism is simply: “Just do it.”…

Rather than trying to carry out spectacular attacks on the scale of September 11, the Nike terrorists are encouraged to use any means at their disposal to cause the maximum number of casualties. The architect of this new way of killing was Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born radical cleric who masterminded al-Qaeda’s operations from Yemen until killed by a US drone strike last September.

Awlaki, whose perfect command of English made him a highly effective al-Qaeda propagandist, regularly posted sermons on the internet urging his followers to carry out rudimentary attacks against Western “infidels” using any means at their disposal.

Read this analysis at the JPost making the same point and noting that Inspire, the Al Qaeda “magazine,” explicitly urged followers to attack locally and on their own. If the reports about him being trained in Waziristan are true, then he’s not a “lone wolf,” strictly speaking. But he was effective enough here (as was Nidal Hasan at Fort Hood) that more aspiring jihadis are bound to start eschewing high explosives for the low-tech yet highly effective machine-gun-in-the-mall approach. Bad days ahead.

Update: Just as I hit publish, the Telegraph updates to say that the earlier explosion was designed to intimidate Merah into surrendering. But he’s not intimidated and refuses to surrender. So … they’re going to start negotiating with him again. Ah, France.

Four years ago jihadi theorist Sheik Abu-Bakar Naji, published “Governance in the Wilderness” (Edarat al-Wahsh).

It is a manifesto rejecting the “spectacular attack” school of jihad and instead taking a page from Antonio Gramsci and Mao’s Long March through the culture and it’s institutions.

The Jihadi’s play the long game. Why not help a culture already committing suicide and slowly bleeding out along with a few more well placed cuts here and there?

Bill Ayers and Francis Fox Piven will be smiling up to the moment the scimitar swings, because, sorry Allah, Belief trumps belief.

Your words – ‘Never Forget’ are highly appropriate.

CorporatePiggy on March 22, 2012 at 12:11 AM

I’m hoping the French give up on trying to take the bastard alive.

The rabbi was among the first shot. His two sons ran to him as he fell. The subhuman scumbag then shot up the schoolyard, chasing and grabbing a 7-year-old girl by her ponytail (they all keep saying “by the hair”, and every picture I see of her has a long ponytail in it) and shooting her in the head. Then he went back and saw that the rabbi’s sons–whom I’m sure he could hear saying “Papa! Papa!” were on the ground with their dead or dying father. So he killed them, too. Then he got on his scooter and ran off.

Kill him. The French won’t give him the death penalty. I hope those special force police officers decide to avenge their fallen soldiers (I wouldn’t expect them to avenge Jews) and kill the jihadi.

Agree. Politics aside of Sarkozy, he’s a politician first.

The riots in the French suburbs are still fresh in peoples minds, and the police were ineffective at best. Property was damaged and people died but it was lost in the larger scale of the chaos.

This is way more personal. Especially with the child angle, and say what you will about the French (and I do), they have people on those counter-terror teams & police that are parents too, and they are most definitely get this SOB.

OTOH, if they can get him and wring some information out of him that can get more of these guys and keep this from happening again or escalating, then do so.

If not, double tap the MF’er and be DONE. No prison, none. I don’t want him to get 15 minutes of fame or chance they could trade him.

lexhamfox on March 22, 2012 at 1:54 AM

I was trying to make this point earlier, but it’s lost on this moronic ‘kill him’ bunch…the French anti-terror police and their elite forces are as good as they can get…but at this point, they want him alive for the info about the extremist group he was part of, called Forsane Alizza…I watched every broadcast on this since Sun morning, as I have family living in France. At this particular time the building he is in is evacuated, so is the entire district (what you’d call here ‘block’), and it’s in total blackout…he is not a threat to civilians, but he can be a threat to the special forces in and around the building, since he has a lot of explosive on him and he can blow it all up…the profilers involved say that he doesn’t have the profile of a suicide bomber, but you never know what he can do if he’s desperate…what they are trying with him right now is what in French is called stratégie de l’épuisement, exhaustion strategy …sooner or later they’ll get him, he has nowhere to run…no need for more drama and overplaying it, especially three weeks before elections…Sarcozy is playing it very smart, so far he acted very calmly and in control, and was level-headed throughout it all… they are not going to blow it now by killing the guy hastily and risking a mess, if they can get him alive…strangely enough, though Sarco is 10% behind that socialist clown, François Hollande in the polls, he stands to gain the most from all this, if he handles it well…he’s always been a vocal advocate of integration of the Maghrébins and not only, as opposed to the ‘multicultural’ approach favored by Britain, and the public is largely with him on this…

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the French elections. There is a really interesting movie called the ‘The Conquest’ about Sarkozy’s rise to power which does a great job of revealing some of the political gossip and intrigue while still managing to skirt French libel laws. I highly recommend it.

Yeah! He’s dead.

Blake on March 22, 2012 at 7:48 AM

And no, he had nothing valuable to offer to merit taking him alive. Now more police have been injured because of this loony plan.

Mo is dead. No great loss.

iceman1960 on March 22, 2012 at 8:04 AM

The Jihadi’s are already making him a hero.

Jihadists celebrated reports that the suspected shooter in the attacks in Toulouse, France, is a fellow al-Qaeda supporter. As reports surfaced about Mohammed Merah, a French national of Algerian origin, professing to be a member of al-Qaeda and carrying out the attacks to avenge Palestinian children, jihadists regarded him as a “hero” and prayed that God protect him. One jihadist, a member of the Shumukh al-Islam forum, posted on the Shumukh al-Islam forum on March 21, 2012: “We bless the operation, and we ask Allah for safety and security to our brother who is respectful for his religion, and for him to meet Allah as a martyr.” Another Shumukh user believed that there may be other like-minded individuals in Germany and the United States, and they might not necessarily be members of al-Qaeda, but be lone wolves who were influenced by al-Qaeda leaders and Anwar al-Awlaki in particular.

@Lord on March 22, 2012 at 3:16 AM:

Muslims–and anyone else–have never needed an excuse to murder Jews. Saying they’re doing it for the Palestinians is just a fig leaf.

I’m glad the bastard is dead. His brother, who helped him, is still alive and probably in custody. They can find out all they need from him.

You really think the sort of man who goes on “Nike” strikes and can’t even get an official membership in something as cheesy sounding as the Knights of Glory is likely to be careful and circumspect in interrogation?

You don’t kill potentially useful sources of information just because they’ve done something evil. You keep them someplace very small, very dark, very noisy, and very damp and parade their ragged tuberculoid shell around for cameras when convenient.

dieudonne on March 22, 2012 at 8:23 AM

Deplorably distasteful jokes to start the thread BTW.

You can have a nasty sarcastic wit without trotting out cheap, braying, jackhole jokes that were done to death 25 years ago. Aim higher than the whore that gives you change back from a dollar.

He wasn’t potentially useful to anyone. He was potentially dangerous. By not killing him earlier on, more people were injured. He deserved death and now he got it. Take your bleeding heart elsewhere.

I find it disgusting that you weep over the death of a terrorist and not his victims.

You are a revolting shamble of a human being to even suggest that I weep for the death of this person when I clearly said that they be kept for information.

Twisted caricatures of this sort belittle you more for making them than me as the target.

Just as snappy and fresh as when Xenophon first made that joke before the birth of Christ.

Wow, you’re really upset that your child murderer has been taken out. LOL! Good.

Blake on March 22, 2012 at 8:36 AM

Again – a sad attempt to smear someone who said that he should be interrogated. To say that someone should be interrogated for useful information to possibly prevent future terrorist actions is in favor of the terrorist is to be as the mad dog that bites the hand that feeds.

Know your enemies and at least be smart enough to know that somebody that’s been commenter here for years is not bloody likely to be a jihadi sympathizer.

Just a response in kind to your actual vulgar comments.

You’ve made an a$$ out of yourself repeatedly all on you own. You’ve been extremely offensive and then you whine when you get it directed back to you. Go mourn somewhere else.
