Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on March 20, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

After getting shellacked in the midterm elections and seeing his approval ratings plunge to the low 40s, Barack Obama must have spent some time taking stock of the situation … right?  Mulled over the wisdom of spending $840 billion on a stimulus bill that didn’t stimulate, and tying Congress up for most of two years to pass a health-care system overhaul so unpopular that it rapidly expanded the grassroots opposition sparked by the bailouts and the stimulus?  Naaaaah:

President Barack Obama blamed Fox News for his political woes in a private meeting with labor leaders in 2010, saying he was “losing white males” who tune into the cable outlet and “hear Obama is a Muslim 24/7,” according to journalist David Corn’s new book, “Showdown.”

In “Showdown: The Inside Story of How Obama Fought Back Against Boehner, Cantor, and the Tea Party” — which hits bookstores on Tuesday — the Washington bureau chief for Mother Jones chronicles the White House from the 2010 midterm elections to the start of the 2012 campaign. The book focuses on key moments of Obama’s presidency, such as Osama bin Laden’s assassination, the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the Arab Spring, the debt ceiling crisis, and the president’s dealings with Congress.

Corn writes that after the midterm elections, Obama told labor leaders in December 2010 that he held Fox partly responsible for him “losing white males.”

“…Fed by Fox News, they hear Obama is a Muslim 24/7, and it begins to seep in…The Republicans have been at this for 40 years. They have new resources, but the strategy is old,” Corn recounted Obama as saying.

All that proves is that Obama never watches Fox News, which to my knowledge hasn’t ever suggested that Obama is a Muslim at all.  That’s nothing more than being a crybaby about a political disaster that was entirely predictable by the summer Congressional recess of August 2009, when Democrats had to stop talking with their constituents in order to pretend that they had support for ObamaCare.  Obama apparently can’t face up to the consequences of his own poor decisions.

My good friend and Townhall colleague Guy Benson did some investigating, and finds no example of the Fox-Muslim nexus in his Lexis-Nexis:

Also, not that the substance of his claim merits serious scrutiny, but on what evidence does Obama base his claim that Fox News indulges “he’s a Muslim” conspiracies ever, let alone “24/7″?  After a cursory search, I identified two examples of suspect reportage in this vein:

(1) In 2007, Fox (along with CNN Headline News) ran with a third party report alleging that Obama had attended a Indonesian madrassa as a child.  The story was false.  Fox News brass slammed the network’s handling of the incident.

(2) Former Fox host E.D. Hill embarrassingly and bizarrely speculated that a playful fist-bump between Barack and Michelle Obama might have been “a terrorist fist jab.”  Hill apologized on air, and is now with CNN.

I’m sure the Media Matters crowd could cite, chapter and verse, additional instances possibly objectionable coverage — but the general notion that Fox regularly airs conspiratorial, Islamophobic coverage about this president is a total canard.  (If you’re interested in other instances of religion-baiting political coverage, see hereherehere and here).

Guy also links to a clip of George Will calling Obama “Alibi Ike,” and recounts just how often the buck doesn’t stop at the Oval Office in the Obama presidency:

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Yeah it was all Fox News and George W. Bush. It couldn’t have anything to do with two years (at the time) of bad stewardship, socialism, and partisanship. This filthy liar needs to go.

Whether it makes it to OOTD status, I’d say it is pretty damned stupid and tone deaf to send your daughter to Mexico for Spring Break along with 25 Secret Service agents. Nevermind the child, who goes to a school costing $45K/year, is not in the safest of countries, how many real Americans can afford such trips? And we taxpayers have to foot the bill for security just because one of Obama’s brats has the wanderlust of her grifter mother?

Again, this is tone deaf. And I realize that some of the more sensitive posters will be upset that I would characterize one of Obama’s kids as a brat but, you know what, having to fork over thousands of dollars in public money just because the girl wants to go to Mexico is bratty behavior.

Happy Nomad on March 20, 2012 at 8:15 AM

It’s shocking that people the Democrats and the media maligned as racist tea baggers don’t care for Obama too much.

In Barry’s mind he has never made a mistake, and isn’t responsible for anything. Except PERSONALLY killing Bin Laden.

He is an immature little brat who needed spankings, but his mom was too busy chasing around the world for muslims to spread her legs for.

One of the top Presidents of all time, according to the man himself.

The reality is that Obama comes off as pretty damned pathetic as he tells the killing of Bin Laden in terms as if he personally led SEAL Team Six into combat and was the first one off the helicopter when all that he did was forego nine holes of golf at Fort Belvior in order to get to the situation room in time for the photo-op. A real human being would be far more humble than the jug-eared bastard.

We could make this into a really interesting bingo game for the next Obama speech. Everybody gets a card with all the usual sources of blame (GWB, Fox News, bitter clingers, etc.) First one with five blame sources in a row wins.

Electrongod on March 20, 2012 at 8:35 AM

I do not have cable but I find it hard to believe that Fox News enjoys the ratings it does if it is such a one note network. Surely, they must take the time to air more diverse and equally hateful views or risk losing their audience.

I am just glad that Fox did not keep him from personally allowing the raid on bin Laden, a raid more daring than D-Day according to a noted historical scholar.

The man is a total embarrassment to the office. Sometimes, I want to think he’s dumb like a fox (no pun intended), but I’m afraid he really believes in his own drivel. If he truly believes this, he is seriously pathetic.

You quell your opponents with positive actions, not by spinning the wheel of blame and picking one de jour when you are to blame for your own failures.

I don’t think he was dressed up like a Seal but you ingrates should send a shout out to the guy for the Saudi actions of the last 48 hours.

They are pumping more oil than a fifties fast food kitchen and the eleven tankers they are sending in the next thirty days outnumber the usual by ten.

He is killing my oil stock play. No, I don spec on oil, I’ve got a conscience but I will lost anyway.

If it gets it by our tremendous refinery problem (due partially to other Dems having a coronary over building them)he may beat the gas enough to diffuse the issue. But getting this far is unreal!

Bowing to the Saudi King? Hhhhmm…

You know that Obama actually thought Presidentin’ would be easy…

He’d tell people what to do and they’d all happily do it, simply because Obama said so.

But, along comes this Fox News…and all Obama’s plans, schemes and dreams are thwarted because the public would rather listen to Megan Kelly than Obama?

And BOR keeps callin’ Obama a Moslem? [BOR actually does not.]

And Greta…constantly hammerin’ Obama for every little mistake?

Wonder what Michelle and his mother-in-law say to Obama every night at the dinner table?

The Obama’s invite criticism of their kids bratty behavior by the very fact they put them in the public spotlight (unlike Hillary Clinton who was seldom seen in public). And make no mistake this trip was unreasonable.

If this is a school trip, why would the administrators jeopardize the safety of the kids by going to Mexico? If this is a spring break trip, what kind of parent would let a 13yr old go somewhere like this? Did they send 25 Secret Service agents because of the increased danger? They’ve entirely locked down the hotel so you know we’re paying out the wazoo for this trip.

In response to the video, Congress of Racial Equality national spokesperson Niger Innis has called on President Obama to remove Hanks’ narration from his campaign film. Innis called the incident “an orchestrated, heinous, and racist ‘Stepin Fetchit’ routine that Mr. Hanks was a part of.”

It’s been reported elsewhere that the school, Sidwell Friends, doesn’t even start its spring break period until the 23rd. So the Obama girl and her buddies are actually missing school to take this trip. But hey, a kid needs vacations, right? I mean it’s been a month or so since the trip to the ski resort in Vail, and it’s been over two months since the Christmas trip to Hawaii, so the girl clearly needs a break. Plus, living year-round in a taxpayer-provided mansion, with gourmet chefs to prepare your meals and chauffeurs to drive you wherever you want to go, must really be hard on a kid.

“Shared sacrifices” people. That’s what it’s all about.
