Video: Biden booed in Pittsburgh …

posted at 10:25 am on March 19, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

I first saw this clip yesterday on the WPXI website, and now the RNC has it clipped and BuzzFeed reports on it more honestly than WPXI did in its written report. They barely mention the booing, noting only that “as [VP Joe Biden] made his way onto Stanwix Street, the warm reception faded and boos could be heard.” As the video shows, boos could not only be heard, they rained down on Biden.  Biden handled it professionally, continuing to smile, wave, and ignore the taunting as any seasoned pol would do.

Still, booing a Vice President makes a pretty good story, one that would normally prompt a reporter to go out and get a couple of interviews.  Is that what WPXI’s Brandon Hudson did?  Not exactly, as you’ll see from about the one-minute mark forward:

Instead of checking out why people might be booing, Hudson talked with a giddy — and almost certainly tipsy — Obama/Biden supporter, who explained almost coherently why seeing Joe Biden was the greatest day in her life.  In between cuts with the supporter, Hudson then explains how to use the “O’Bama” signs to build support for the ticket.

Even when people boo this ticket, the media seems intent on explaining how to get them another term.  A great moment in local journalism, no?

They weren’t booing, Ed. They were “oohing” at their fortune to be in the mere presence of the greatness of Joe Biden. If Obama had been there, they would’ve fainted.

(That’s the best I can do for positive spin.)

Even when people boo this ticket, the media seems intent on explaining how to get them another term. A great moment in local journalism, no?

The Left’s control of the media, both nationally and locally, needs to be addressed even more than it already has been. The awareness of the pervasive bias has been around for a good 20 years at least but more needs to be done. Specifically producing more young journalists who don’t start the day already in the tank for the Left. The worst thing about it is that it’s very likely that many of the perpetrators of it, younger ones and local ones especially, don’t even realize what they’re doing. It just comes naturally to them and they’d probably be shocked if it were pointed out to them. Then again, a lot of them know exactly what they are doing and have been groomed for it by their Leftist j-school svengalis.

We need to get past this thinking that these people are journalists. They are not. Breitbart understood this, that they are part of the Democratic-Left Establishment, they are a propaganda wing of a political movement — not journalists as we think. So quit being upset about it and take to heart Brietbart’s actions and tactics to combat these people from the local to national level.

FYI: WPXI (and in its previous incarnation as WIIC) has been the perennial bottom-of-the-barrel local station (NBC) in Pittsburgh for decades. They are/were who you watch if you are desperate to see some kind of local newscast and you can’t figure out how to tune in KDKA (CBS) or WTAE (ABC).

That’s not to say that KDKA or WTAE are that much better, especially in recent years, as they have been taking “inspiration” from their national counterparts. Their local broadcasts have been tilting steadily leftward, but WPXI is just … pathetic, downgraded from being a joke.

There’s a sort-of sardonic joke about Pittsburgh and western PA in general and the latest cultural trends: if it’s the “in” thing in New York or California, for example, it’ll be the “in” thing in Pittsburgh about ten years from now (e.g. we didn’t get hippies until the 80s). An isolated exception was that Pittsburgh did have an Occupy encampment for a while.

So for our local “news” media, this phenomenon is operating in reverse: they are still all under the impression that western PA is still solidly Democrat/pro-labor union, but there was somewhat genuine surprise in both the broadcast and printed media during the state and local elections this past November that … OMG! … some counties’ row offices went ALL REPUBLICAN! … when they’ve been Democrat since forever.

Ha! Glad you liked that. I remember being very puzzled as a kid when my next-door playmate’s mom yelled out the window, “Danny! Get in here and redd up your room!”

While my mom and her siblings were born in Pittsburgh/western PA, I don’t remember my mom ever saying “redd up” to me instead of “clean up.” In fact, I can’t recall if she ever used any Pittsburghese lingo, although she did have a distinct western PA accent. There was a story years ago that this particular accent was common not only in most of western PA, but also extending into Maryland, West Virginia and parts of Virginia.

There’s a car sticker that I’ve seen which simply reads “N ‘at,” which is an expression that is tacked on to the end of any sentence listing several things in succession:
“We’re going shopping in the Strip and maybe go to Primanti Brothers to eat n’at.”
