Quotes of the day

posted at 10:47 pm on March 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

“The National Debt has now increased more during President Obama’s three years and two months in office than it did during 8 years of the George W. Bush presidency.

“The Debt rose $4.899 trillion during the two terms of the Bush presidency. It has now gone up $4.939 trillion since President Obama took office…

“The National Debt also now exceeds 100% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, the total value of goods and services.

“Mr. Obama has been quick to blame his predecessor for the soaring Debt, saying Mr. Bush paid for two wars and a Medicare prescription drug program with borrowed funds.”

***

“The public seems to agree by a wide margin, with a recent Fox News poll finding that 59 percent of respondents felt the Supreme Court should repeal either the entire bill or parts of it. A new ABC News/Washington Post poll is even worse for the president, with a total of 67 percent saying the mandate or the whole law should be thrown out…

“Asked about the poll numbers, Carney insisted that the poor numbers are due to Republican attacks, a sign the White House believes the problem is the message not the substance of the law.

“‘The polling data suggests in part the hundreds of millions of dollars that was spent attacking it,’ Carney told reporters. ‘And what we’re focused on is implementing it so that Americans — more and more Americans see the benefits that it brings.’”

***

“Obama and his advisers have cast the collapse of the [grand bargain] talks as a Republican failure. Boehner, unable to deliver, stepped away from the deal, simple as that.

“But interviews with most of the central players in those talks — some of whom were granted anonymity to speak about the secret negotiations — as well as a review of meeting notes, e-mails and the negotiating proposals that changed hands, offer a more complicated picture of the collapse. Obama, nervous about how to defend the emerging agreement to his own Democratic base, upped the ante in a way that made it more difficult for Boehner — already facing long odds — to sell it to his party. Eventually, the president tried to put the original framework back in play, but by then it was too late. The moment of making history had passed…

“A president who promised to bring the country together, who confidently presented himself as the transformational figure able to make that happen, now had his chance. But, like earlier policy battles, the debt ceiling negotiations revealed a divided figure, a man who remained aloof from a Congress where he once served and that he now needed. He was caught between his own aspirations for historical significance and his inherent political caution. And he was unable to bridge a political divide that had only grown wider since he took office with a promise to change the ways of Washington, underscoring the gulf between the way he campaigned and the way he had governed

“What happened during those days in July when the grand bargain was almost reached, but not quite, had changed him. He no longer seemed divided.

“His goal now was unequivocal: to win a second term.”

***

“Obama said Lincoln — an oft-mentioned Obama role model — understood Americans are one nation, and they rise and fall together. He contrasted that with ‘on-your-own economics’ which he says his Republican foes embrace.

“‘They’ve got a simple philosophy: We are better off when everybody is left on their own, everybody writes their own rules,’ Obama said…

“‘That shift that has taken place in the Republican Party we haven’t seen in a very long time,’ he said. ‘In 2008, the guy I was running against, the Republican nominee, he didn’t deny that climate change might be a problem, he thought it was a good idea for us to ban torture, he was on record as having supported immigration reform.’”

***

“The frustrations of the presidency once had Barack Obama reach for a literary metaphor.

“‘At times he couldn’t help feeling, as he told one associate, a kinship with the protagonist in Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea,” writes David Corn in his new book on the presidency.

“‘He had, against tremendous odds, caught a big fish, but on the long voyage back to shore, his prized catch had been picked to pieces by sharks,’ Corn writes.”

***

“Corn writes that after the midterm elections, Obama told labor leaders in December 2010 that he held Fox partly responsible for him ‘losing white males.’

“‘…Fed by Fox News, they hear Obama is a Muslim 24/7, and it begins to seep in…The Republicans have been at this for 40 years. They have new resources, but the strategy is old,’ Corn recounted Obama as saying…

“And in a meeting with an adviser after the 2010 midterm elections, Obama slammed corporate executives for attacking him.

“‘I saved these guys when the economy was falling off a cliff,’ Obama said, according to Corn. ‘Now I get nothing but their venom.’”

Yes, to Jacksonville or Miami, probably the latter. Denver hasn’t the money to keep both and Tebow’s too big at the box office to play second fiddle. I hope PM is alright physically. A great QB and person, as is TT.

Romney/West 2012 because America will not survive 4 more years of the Gangster and Chief.

NickDeringer on March 19, 2012 at 11:40 PM

Regrettably progressives are not good at math.

It is really hard to watch a political class abandon its fiduciary responsibilities. And hard to watch a feckless, sycophantic (or perhaps just fearful) press cover for a degrading of the country

Which makes us wonder: why even pretend with taxation? As we have shown, the US is progressively more reliant on debt issuance as a funding source for all deficit. At last check debt issuance served to fund 54% of all government expenditures, as tax revenues net of refunds now account for less than half. In fact as of today, in Fiscal 2012 the US has issued $115 billion more in debt ($776 billion) than it has collected in net tax revenues ($661 billion).

So why pretend America will ever repay its debt? Why engage in meaningless political theatrics and senseless optics, and collect taxes at all, as sooner or later virtually all US deficits will be funded through debt issuance, and thus Fed monetization? Why not just cut all marginal tax rates to 0%, and get consumers to truly enjoy a few months of unbridled spending euphoria before the hyperinflation hits?

and here’s the ugly graph

http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user5/imageroot/2012/02/2012%20YTD%20Debt%20vs%20Net%20Tax%203.19.jpg

Wisconsin will prove in Nov. if the state is made of harlots or hard-working decent people.
Schadenfreude on March 19, 2012 at 11:20 PM

Unfortunately, it’s not really that simple.

It may be more accurate to ask if hard-working decent people can withstand a sh*tstorm of furor generated by the combined actions and bankrolls of the unions, the democrat party, the MSM, and any other progressives/anarchists I didn’t pick up in the first three groups. That’s a pretty lopsided battle.

For instance, look at the 32 (IIRC) Wisconsin judges who have signed the recall petitions against the governor, but refuse to recuse themselves from potentially related cases. Outrageous.

For the proggies, this is the culmination of perhaps a hundred years of patient, determined work to transform (i.e. undermine) this country, and they’ll never have a better chance than now. It’s going to be a very bumpy ride…

The only problem we have right now is the debt. I think, we are on the right path. GDP is steadily picking up, as more people start finding good jobs and paying taxes, the government can start operating in the black again. If we are all being honest, from what happened in 2007-2008, we’ve come a long way from losing 800K jobs a month to now 23 months of private sector jobs increasing every month, it could be better but it could be far worse too. Mitt would be great as his “youthful ward”, what with Batman being in his 80s nowadays.

So tell me, friend….What major power is doing better than US from the crash of 2008? Europe has been on fire for the past 2 year. Japan is a mess. China is about to crash. I think we have managed to come out of 2008 mess, better than most world powers. Look at Russia, even their population is in decline talk less of their military, last years budget was about 30 billion.

Fakery all around you but you’d never see it.

Schadenfreude on March 20, 2012 at 12:06 AM

The only problem we have right now is the debt. I think, we are on the right path. GDP is steadily picking up, as more people start finding good jobs and paying taxes, the government can start operating in the black again. If we are all being honest, from what happened in 2007-2008, we’ve come a long way from losing 800K jobs a month to now 23 months of private sector jobs increasing every month, it could be better but it could be far worse too. I think we are doing fine.

0bamaderangementsyndrom on March 19, 2012 at 11:51 PM

Did you steal that from Tom Hanks????

More people finding good jobs and paying taxes……

Don’t know where you live…

People where I live are finding second jobs that teenagers used to work…
Not sure what the teenagers are doing today…

I personally…
Got a good job working for a company that doesn’t have health insurance…
So I run a home business just to write off the insurance premiums…
Of course provide a service….
And I am not a 1%er….
Not even close…..
But I can survive….

Are we doing fine??????

I have had to re-adjust….
No future savings….
House underwater…

Thanks President Obama.

I bet the housing industry is saying thank you Mr. President.

I bet the banks are saying thank you Mr. President.

No major terrorist attack on our main land, lets thank God for that and our security apparatus.

Peace in the streets is worth something right? No Athens/Middle East

Spain unemployment almost 25%, I think we are doing a bit better.

Last exit to “La La Land” – take a hard left.

whatcat on March 20, 2012 at 12:09 AM

Bush came into office with a surplus. He left with the DOW losing 60% of its value. Nearly 5 trillion in debt. Economy in free fall. I would hate to see what would have happened if he had Obama’s circumstances when he first came into office or any republican for that matter. Obama has stabilized the country, the least you can say is thank you.

0bamaderangementsyndrom on March 19, 2012 at 11:24 PM

Bush did NOT inherit a surplus. The CBO projected a surplus over the next decade, but as the recent revision in the expected cost of Obamacare showed(it went from $900 billion to $1.6 trillion), the CBO ain’t exactly right all the time.

Also, let’s look at what Bush did have land in his lap when he entered office. The economy was in a recession, the dot-com bubble burst, Enron and WorldCom’s accounting scandals came to light, and there was that little event on September 11, 2001 you may recall. All that stuff happened within the first year and a half of Bush’s first term. None of it was caused by him, yet he received a ton of heat for it once the Dems ended their moratorium on speaking ill of the guy(which lasted only a few months after 9/11).

Did Bush blame Clinton? No. Did he blame the Dems? No. Did he constantly b-tch about what he’d “inherited”? No. He accepted the hand he’d been dealt and he did the best he could to address each issue. Now many of us on both sides of the political spectrum can criticize what he did to deal with these crises. But he never attempted to pass the buck or kick the can down the road.

Even the biggest Obama buttsniffer out there cannot tell me with a straight face that the dude wouldn’t have handed in his resignation had he had to deal with the crap Bush did in the first 18 months of his Presidency.

BTW Ed and Allah, even though they are seasoned pros, have taken their threads up a notch lately. That is hard to do considering the standard they set before. Just though I would mention that in passing.

0bamaderangementsyndrom on March 20, 2012 at 12:13 AM

Don’t know if this will shed some ‘light’

Guess they have to also ban Predator, Blazing Saddles and History of the World from the movie theaters just off the top of my head.

Predator: “Bunch of slack jawed faggots around here. This stuff will make you a goddamn sexual tyrannosaurus, just like me.”

Blazing Saddles: “Watch. me. faggots!”

History of the World: “OK faggot, what’s next!?”
