Chicago Dems: Vote for the crook, it’s important …

posted at 12:10 pm on March 19, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Buddy Roemer coined one of the greatest political slogans in American history when white supremacist David Duke managed to win the a general-election slot in 1991 for Louisiana governor in the open primaries.  Roemer, the incumbent, came in third behind Duke and Democrat Edwin Edwards and just missed a chance to vie for re-election.  The newly-Republican Roemer told his fellow GOP voters to support Edwards by saying, “Vote for the crook — it’s important.”  Edwards won in a landslide, although as Roemer more or less predicted, Edwards wound up serving over eight years in prison for corruption in office.

At least in that case, one can understand the push for voters to choose a corrupt pol over something far worse.  In Chicago, what counts as “far worse”?  Republicans (via Newsalert):

Perhaps the most audacious plea came from West Side Democratic elected officials who urged voters to support an Illinois House member charged with bribery. It looks bad, they acknowledged, but it will prevent the seat from falling into the hands of Republicans.

The rally in support of appointed state Rep. Derrick Smith (D-Chicago) featured U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.), three aldermen and a county commissioner and even adopted a catchy moniker: “No defeat or retreat — keep the Dem seat.” …

Smith was arrested last week by federal prosecutors after being secretly recorded while allegedly accepting a $7,000 bribe in exchange for writing a letter of support for a daycare center seeking a $50,000 state grant.

The most amusing part of this story is that Smith’s opponent is … also a Democrat.  Tom Swiss switched parties to run for the seat, which is why this has come up in the primaries.  Even more amusing, the Illinois Democratic Party apparently has no other candidate qualified in this race, so Democrats have no other choice but to vote between someone filmed taking a bribe and someone who just joined their party.

What does the highest-ranking Democrat in Illinois think about this?  Here’s Governor Pat Quinn, not auditioning for the next volume of Profiles in Courage:

Gov. Pat Quinn on Saturday tiptoed around Smith’s bribery charge, calling his race against Swiss a “tough call for voters,” but one “they’ll be able to sort out.”

No thanks to you, Governor.  As for Chicago Democrats being asked to vote for the crook, they might be most surprised by the suggestion that they have any other choice.

This belies that fact that there have been 75 rapes in the Occupy camps, so examples of alternative headlines to suggest in the “Comments” sections of offending sites is offered. “Occupy” is a subsidiary of the “War in Women”: A Tea Party is one of the safest place for women in the world.

Yeah, they’ll be able to sort it out when they pick up the campaign brochure from the smashed windshield on their cars warning them–vote for the Democrook, or else!

BTW, I see they have the Commie Rep Danny Davis campaigning for their crook-du-jour.

Also, Michele Piszczor, who is challenging Michael Madigan (IL House Speaker for almost 30 years) in the primary, has had her tires slashed, her campaign signs stolen from yards and alleges she now is being stalked by a “Madigoon” and the police in the IL 8th district apparently don’t care. Just Dimbecile politricks as usual in Crook County.

The really amazing part to me, if you ask a democrat you know about this kind of thing.. you always get the boilerplate response,.. “of course you guys are worse than crooks”.. How so?..

“You hate the children,… and women,.. you hate the women”..

This, from a democrat who’s supposedly a friend.. you challenge them on it,.. hey,.. bonehead, you know me, I’m not a monster am I?.. and they sputter, and mutter something like,.. “Well, not YOU,.. but the rest are all like that”.. they absolutely will take everyday experiences with republicans and conservatives, and put it down as being an outlier,.. completely unlike the mythical “real” republicans they mean. They can live among us, work with us, and still talk this stuff about us, without ever making the connection, they’re building a strawman.

kinda like our libiot friends here…

NO NO,… it’s those OTHER republicans who always boil our cats.. the ones who unlike you, (can I still borrow your lawn mower?) that wanna ban everything, burn all the books and live in caves..

mind you, I do loves my occasional cave painting, but,.. I only use stale liberal blood for that, never fresh… and like a vegan, only after they fall dead out of a tree first…

sigh…. cognitive dissonance is the liberals only trick.

Oh Ed, You missed the most important part entirely.
Quinn may be the “highest raking Democrat” in our state….but without a doubt, THE most powerful democrat in Illinois is Mike Madigan. And who is Smith’s major supporter?…..that’s right Mike Madigan.

“Madigan’s political committee has provided more than $60,000 in aid to Smith’s campaign, the most to a Democrat in any Illinois legislative race.”

Madigan’s running for re-election and his platform has been about ending corruption…..yea, right.

Both Madigan and Quinn have been very quiet about Smith resigning his seat….hoping to let it all play out and worry about it after the election.

“…”Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn said little more than Madigan about the situation during an appearance in Chicago Wednesday.
We shouldn’t judge anyone until the jury does and the judge renders a sentence, if that’s the case,” Quinn said.”

Illinois politics….gotta love it. *sigh*

What would Abe Lincoln do???

ted c on March 19, 2012 at 12:27 PM

Lincoln himself was a corrupt corporate insider and a lifelong mercantilist. The economic policies that he spent his entire adult life championing — protectionist tariffs, corporate welfare for railroad and road-building corporations, and inflationary central banking — were nothing but an Americanized version of the corrupt British mercantilist system that the American Revolution was fought to discard. They were all designed to use the powers of the state to benefit a small, politically powerful cabal of (mostly Northern) manufacturers, bankers, and politicians at the expense of the rest of society. They were also designed to enlarge the state by tying all of these powerful interests to it politically. They were all finally adopted, after some seventy years of political debate over them, during the Lincoln regime.

I grew up in the Chicago area thinking dead people were supposed to vote, that people could vote as often as they could get away with doing so, and that all governors were supposed to end up in jail, so voting for a crook doesn’t seem a big deal at all. In fact, it would be more news worthy if the Democrat for which people are asked to vote WASN’T a crook of some kind. It’s the Chicago way. Just look at the crook who occupies (oops!) the White House. Just yesterday another of his lies was unveiled – that Republicans refused to agree to tax increases in the budget deal last summer when in fact they had done so – but it would have negated Obama’s hopes to run on a do-nothing Congress.
