America rejoices: Lehigh 75, Duke 70; Update: Video added

posted at 9:56 pm on March 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

We don’t usually post on the tourney but we do usually post when an evil tyrant is deposed. Evil tyrant status: Deposed.

It was touch and go down the stretch, to the point where I had a “Duke-hating blogger has heart ripped out of chest” headline all ready to go for when some Dukie inevitably hit a game-winning three at the buzzer. Two 15 seeds over 2 seeds in the same day was too much to ask, especially when one of them was the Durham Death Star. But Lehigh Skywalker blew it up. Dude, they blew it up.

I’ll post video highlights when they’re available. While we wait, you can watch the recap of Norfolk State knocking off Missouri (how did they let Pressey get off that good of a shot at the end?). As for me, I’m ready to unleash the ‘bot.

Update: ESPN had 6.45 million brackets submitted this year. As of 20 minutes ago, with the first round not quite yet over, not a single one was still perfect.

Update: As promised, the Lehigh/Duke highlights. Biggest first-round upset in tourney history.

I’m thinking a bunch of white dudes probably assaulted a few of the black Duke players before the game, so they were a bit flustered.

Bishop on March 16, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Yeah, I usually pick one 15 beating a 2. Duke & Missouri weren’t it. However 3/4 of my final four is still intact.

rihar on March 16, 2012 at 10:04 PM

Two upsets my bracket didn’t call but is quite fine with.

Missouri I had getting upset by Florida next round, so no harm done.

Duke is one of my Sweet 16 lost, but always hooray for Duke losing. My elite eight is still intact anyway.

So far, a decent bracket. I nailed VCU, Colorado, N.C. State, Purdue…

Hopefully it will all add up to a fair consolation prize for the fact that the days are numbered for my poor shorthanded Syracuse Orange (who even my bracket has getting ousted by Vandy…)

I’ve always kind of like Duke, because of the mindless haters.

Coach is a good guy, assistant at Army under Bobby Knight.

Good school. Great campus. No NCAA violations.

The only thing to hate about them (for some people) is that they have a lot of white players. Well, so does Lehigh.

rukiddingme on March 16, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Watching ESPN fawn over Obama’s bracket-making takes whatever (admittedly little) joy I have in MM.

What gets me is that I know this isn’t simply a network reporting on a slight human interest story we can all, Democrat and Republican alike, can share in.

It’s the smarmy liberalism of ESPN executives who view this story as “Oh, look! We have a black President! And it’s basketball! And we have a black President doing basketball! That’s just so cool!” — all the while dead ready to put their home on the market if God forbid a few more people who look like 44 should move into the neighborhood.

Now if Michigan State wins the Big Ten is 5-1 in the second round :)

gophergirl on March 16, 2012 at 10:19 PM

The real question is how MSU got a #1 seed. They always seem to get a #1 seed despite a pretty medicore team.

Dr. Tesla on March 16, 2012 at 10:21 PM

They tied for the Big Ten regular season title, won the conference tourney, and play a very tough schedule. And I say that even though I largely loathe the Spartans (Purdue fan).

Bitter Clinger on March 16, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Not sure how you put that Duke team in the final 4. Probably the weakest team they’ve had in about 10 years.

Watching ESPN fawn over Obama’s bracket-making takes whatever (admittedly little) joy I have in MM.

ESPN is an embarrassment any time of the year.

Obama’s bracket doesn’t make March Madness unbearable for me, just from the simple fact that they tout his knowledge every year, and invariably my bracket is always better than his in the end. That’s just fun right there.

Looks like my streak is continuing too. My final four are still in the mix.

Seven Percent Solution on March 16, 2012 at 10:26 PM

And, last night the lowly NC-Ashville got robbed in the last seconds against the number one seed Syracuse. The refs called an OB on Ashville when clearly Syracuse touched the ball last, when Ashville was ahead. The NCAA later admitted the error and apologized, reminding us all of how empty apologies are. You listening, Obama?
