Obama on his opponents: They would have been founding members of the “flat earth society”

posted at 4:50 pm on March 15, 2012 by Tina Korbe

In a speech at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Md., a smug President Barack Obama smeared opponents of his energy policies as backward and unscientific in their approach:

“Now, here’s the sad thing. Lately, we have heard a lot of professional politicians, a lot of the folks who were running for a certain office, who shall go unnamed, they’ve been talking down new sources of energy. They dismiss wind power. They dismiss solar power. They make jokes about biofuels. They were against raising fuel standards. I guess they like gas guzzlers. They think that’s good for our future. We’re trying to move towards the future. They want to be stuck in the past!” Obama exclaimed to cheers from the crowd. “If some of these folks were around when Columbus set sail, they probably must have been founding members of the flat earth society. They would not believe that the world was round!”

The president continued on in the same vein, citing U.S. history for further examples of ignorant incredulousness. Some folks didn’t believe TV would take off! One of Henry Ford’s advisers suggested the automobile would be a fad! Rutherford B. Hayes couldn’t understand why anyone would want a telephone! The GOP is just like all of them!

Actually, the president had his facts wrong. On a purely surface level, he needs a history lesson:

But Nan Card, curator of manuscripts at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Ohio, told TPM that the nation’s 19th president was being unfairly tagged as a Luddite.

“He really was the opposite,” she said. “He had the first telephone in the White House. He also had the first typewriter in the White House. Thomas Edison came to the White House as well and displayed the phonograph. Photographing people who came to the White House and visited at dinners and receptions was also very important to him.” …

“He was pretty technology-oriented for the time,” Card said. “Between the telephone, the telegraph, the phonograph and photography, I think he was pretty much on the cutting edge.” …

Obama’s invocation of the “flat earth” theory in the context of Christopher Columbus’ journey across the ocean also contained some dubious history. …

[H]istorians have long contended that the notion Europeans widely believed the Earth was flat, let alone 15th century Spanish scholars, is a myth developed centuries later.”

More importantly, though, the president’s speech betrays his misunderstanding of the nature of the objections to his energy policy. It’s not that the GOP candidates don’t see any potential in wind or solar energy; it’s that they don’t think it’s the role of the government to prop up alternative energy companies with subsidies. Did the federal government pay Henry Ford to develop the automobile? I didn’t think so.

If anything, Obama believes less in the potential of wind and solar companies than free marketeers who say, “Let them compete!”  He must not think the pioneers of wind and solar will ever find a way to contain costs or market their products without the help of the federal government. What’s that doubt about?

The silver lining out of this is it shows Obama and the Democrats are at the bottom of the barrel.

They’ve got nothing. The have no real facts. No real answers.

So now all they have left with is name calling.

I have faith in the American people. They won’t stand for this petty crap from their President.

You know, you raise an interesting point. As the cost of oil rises, the cost of petroleum products rises, including latex and polyurethane prophylactics. Imagine when the cost of condoms reaches $100/barrel. Exactly what Sandra Fluke predicted! I bet she’s shorting Carbonite stock about now, too.

de rigueur on March 15, 2012 at 5:30 PM

‘Splain to me how Obama just giving money to his green cronies to piss down the drainhole of bankruptcy, after they skim their share off the top, encourages any kind of competition?

And on the subject of Henry Ford and the car … it caught on only with the rich initially bcuz they were the only ones who could afford it until Ford developed the assembly line. There also weren’t many, if any, paved roads, gas stations weren’t sprouting up on every corner and there wasn’t much of an oil industry. But I don’t recall from history studies that people were forced to give up their horses, wagons and carriages to go buy cars. They did so when the car became affordable and then the system to support its usage grew around it.

If green stuff ever becomes affordable and easier to use, then people will gravitate to it and the market will grow. However, I don’t see it happening with electric cars anytime soon. It’s difficult to buy a new car if you don’t have a job. And with all the coal-fired power plants closing, you’ll be lucky to find affordable electricity or enough electricity or any electricity to charge the car, but yet the messiah keeps trying to ram it down our throats.

Baraka’s insistence on all this is the clear sign of a sick, demented and dictatorial mind with no rhyme or reason that contradicts itself. And it still makes me wonder how seemingly intelligent people do not see the delusion and madness of what this man says.

I really hate to start a global warming argument, but I just can’t let this one sit there…

liberal4life, care to explain why the Earth was much warmer when the dinosarus roamed? Were they engaged in heavy industry burning fossil fuels?

How about that famous “hockey stick” graph, which when you expand out to cover the the last 100 million years shows that the “hockey stick” isn’t even the faintest of upward ticks on the massive scale of Earth’s warming and cooling trends?

How about the Medieval Warming Period? Care to explain why the Earth was warmer during that period when there was no heavy industry to pollute the air?

How about the Little Ice Age? I guess it’s a good thing those Renaissance Period government shutdown all the medieval heavy industry and all those coal burning power plants so the Earth could cool, huh?

We’ve only been recording actual temperatures for the last 150 years or so. We’ve actually been studying the climate and creating long term climate models for even less time than that. We are only just now learning the effects of cosmic radiation and other contributions from within and outside our solar system on our climate. The “science” that you claim is so settled is barely in it’s infancy at this point. The science is most definitely NOT settled, because we are still learning new factors that impact it… which is just about every natural science we are aware of all interacting… we barely understand it at all.

Science is NEVER settled… no science is ever “settled”. That is the argument of those who have no ambition to continue to advance science and human knowledge.

He accuses the gop of living in the past, but he refuses to live in the present. Imagine George Washington declaring we must travel to the moon and anyone that does not agree with me is living in the past. He sounded like the bumbling idiot he is today.

At some point someone, who does not need government help, is going to invent an alternative to oil and they are going to make billions of dollars with a patent. It will still take 20-30 years to change the infrastructure to make it useful and affordable. In the meantime, we use oil and need to use more of what we have already in the US. Estimates say our own reserves alone can last 200 years.

I say let him bloviate the need to change to resources that don’t exist today. This is a losing argument for him and anyone with half sense would crush him in a debate regarding energy. America is tired of his act of creating these false narratives, at this point his actions have resulted in a pretty poor track record that will be hard to defend in the general election.

Obama slammin’ my home boy Rutherford B. Hayes…grew up just down the street from Spiegel Grove…well, that about does it…I can take a lot but Obama dissin’ one of my own.

Hayes was actually very much pro-technology in his day. His home phone number at the time he lived in Fremont was #6, or maybe #8…as his was one of the first phones installed in a private residence at the time.

At least Hayes did not try to shove millions and millions of tax payer dollars at novel and more “green” communications devices such as the heliograph (an early solar powered point and “talk” system in its day) and those old nasty telephones used a lot of carbon, too.

But, at least Obama got his brackets posted…that’s the real important stuff, you know.

And his buddy, Biden, the VP (also Obama’s insurance policy), was in the neighborhood this past week, told the local unions that the GOP was hell bent on bankrupting them and putting all union workers in the unemployment line. Said it like it was a bad thing or somethin’, too.

Would love to see both Obama and Biden unemployed.

Can’t wait until January 2013 when we can have a real President in the White House again.

Honest Abraham Lincoln got the moniker “Honest” presumably from his opponents in the courtroom. From how I understand it, Mr. Lincoln would so accurately and honestly depict his opponent’s arguments that Lincoln’s own clients were aghast because they thought that Lincoln was working for the opposition. However, once Lincoln laid out the opposition’s case, he summarily deconstructed it bit-by-bit and presented evidence contrary to the opposition’s case. If this historical tidbit is true regarding Lincoln and the label “Honest” Abe, then “Dishonest” Obama is an appropriately earned title. Mr. Obama fallaciously builds strawmen arguments that are unsupported by facts, and then he knocks them over–an ongoing habit that is dishonest to the core.

Luddite describes the left pretty well. I would take the AGW crowd more seriously if they were interested in nuclear.

The billions they spend to ‘educate’ the peasants in the Greening of America could be spent on educating people on nuclear…esp. advanced nuclear.

But no, the elite leftists would rather go back to the early 20th century

liberal4life on March 15, 2012 at 4:56 PM

Just keep on telling the big lie. Nothing is ever settled in science. If you had more than primary school science courses you would know that.

Spoken like the true believer you are. Provide links to pictures of the solar panels and wind generator that power your house. Provide proof that you ride a bicycle or walk to work otherwise you are a progressive hypocrite that doesn’t have a clue of what it takes to live on alternative power.

In a speech at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Md., a smug President Barack Obama smeared opponents of his energy policies as backward and unscientific in their approach:

Oh! That was more than smug. It was arrogant and bullying. Ann Compton, an unabashed propagandist for Obama reported it as “fiesty.”

The irony is that he did it at a sub-standard but black community college. He threw out some fake statistics about how little oil America has compared to how much it imports. He called it a math problem. Well, few in that audience of Prince George’s Community College students can even perform basic math at the high school level!

I wonder how the scenario would turn out, its about the turn of the 13th Century and Mr. Obama has developed a severe headache. The local scientist/Doctor believes it to be evil spirits that must be released and science being 100 percent accurate according to some the only remedy would be to drill holes in his head and release the evil demons. This was proven science a one point. But I’m more than sure Mr. Obama would not agree today.

Go ahead, ax anyone ’bout that.

I really hate to start a global warming argument, butI just can’t let this one sit there…

I agree on both points, so I will limit my response to referring folks to this link.

I know that the successful politicization of science demands that all liberals be climate hawks and all conservatives be climate ostriches, but you don’t have to be from Kiribati to find this site illuminating. It does a good job of addressing each argument individually, which is definitely what you want in dealing with such a complex subject.

Obama exclaimed to cheers from the crowd. “If some of these folks were around when Columbus set sail, they probably must have been founding members of the flat earth society. They would not believe that the world was round!”

History illiterate.

Yes, Enlightenment folks took their “facts” from poets like Washington Irving who confirmed their worldview that they were so much smarter than the people who lived before them.

Some people are just smart enough to realize that in many places like where I live that there are glacial grooves that have dug out some of the most beautiful hills and ravines. Strangely long before the combustion engine. Earth’s climate change is one thing that could count on long before man set foot on this Earth.

Ambition. The easiest way to advance a career is to use the relatively endless resources provided by the tax payer to leverage those with significant, but limited resources, into giving up or losing much of their freedom on behalf of those with no resources but plenty of bitterness. Hey, it worked for Paddy “The Prosecutor’s Prosecutor” Fitzgerald.

I’ve always liked the Farrakhan/Sharpton theories that ancient Egypt was an advanced black civilization with medicine and the ability to fly—-that’s what Farrakhan has said.
Anyway, how advanced could they have been if whitey conquered them and stole all their sheet?

arnold ziffel on March 15, 2012 at 5:54 PM

At least give them kudos for being creative…

The real tragedy is that there are people like Allison — an ignorant, Progressive, graduate of Cornell, who posts at Townhall.com, chick that is suffering from a severe case of Alliduncism and white guilt. A few weeks ago, she was going on and on and on about how white people have stolen all of the inventions that black people really discovered. She learned all of this from watching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on The View. According to KAJ, a black man discovered the lightbulb and Edison stole it from him. Not Kidding.

This was her infamous response:

“Edison invented light not the lightbulb, you moron.”

Who knew the Dark Ages lasted until 1879? LOL

Another Alliduncism:

“Like the proverbial broken clock, you might be right once a day.”

She would be funny…….if she couldn’t vote.

CW on March 15, 2012 at 7:04 PM

An oldie but a goodie! In fact, if the 173 myths that are busted in the resource I mentioned earlier, it’s the first-ranked:

It is obviously true that past climate change was caused by natural forcings. However, to argue that this means we can’t cause climate change is like arguing that humans can’t start bushfires because in the past they’ve happened naturally. Greenhouse gas increases have caused climate change many times in Earth’s history, and we are now adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere at a increasingly rapid rate.

Looking at the past gives us insight into how our climate responds to external forcings. Using ice cores, for instance, we can work out the degree of past temperature change, the level of solar activity, and the amount of greenhouse gases and volcanic dust in the atmosphere. From this, we can determine how temperature has changed due to past energy imbalances. What we have found, looking at many different periods and timescales in Earth’s history, is that when the Earth gains heat, positive feedbacks amplify the warming. This is why we’ve experienced such dramatic changes in temperature in the past. Our climate is highly sensitive to changes in heat. We can even quantify this: when you include positive feedbacks, a doubling of CO2 causes a warming of around 3°C.

What does that mean for today? Rising greenhouse gas levels are an external forcing, which has caused climate changes many times in Earth’s history. They’re causing an energy imbalance and the planet is building up heat. From Earth’s history, we know that positive feedbacks will amplify the greenhouse warming. So past climate change doesn’t tell us that humans can’t influence climate; on the contrary, it tells us that climate is highly sensitive to the greenhouse warming we’re now causing.
