Obama on his opponents: They would have been founding members of the “flat earth society”

posted at 4:50 pm on March 15, 2012 by Tina Korbe

In a speech at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Md., a smug President Barack Obama smeared opponents of his energy policies as backward and unscientific in their approach:

“Now, here’s the sad thing. Lately, we have heard a lot of professional politicians, a lot of the folks who were running for a certain office, who shall go unnamed, they’ve been talking down new sources of energy. They dismiss wind power. They dismiss solar power. They make jokes about biofuels. They were against raising fuel standards. I guess they like gas guzzlers. They think that’s good for our future. We’re trying to move towards the future. They want to be stuck in the past!” Obama exclaimed to cheers from the crowd. “If some of these folks were around when Columbus set sail, they probably must have been founding members of the flat earth society. They would not believe that the world was round!”

The president continued on in the same vein, citing U.S. history for further examples of ignorant incredulousness. Some folks didn’t believe TV would take off! One of Henry Ford’s advisers suggested the automobile would be a fad! Rutherford B. Hayes couldn’t understand why anyone would want a telephone! The GOP is just like all of them!

Actually, the president had his facts wrong. On a purely surface level, he needs a history lesson:

But Nan Card, curator of manuscripts at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Ohio, told TPM that the nation’s 19th president was being unfairly tagged as a Luddite.

“He really was the opposite,” she said. “He had the first telephone in the White House. He also had the first typewriter in the White House. Thomas Edison came to the White House as well and displayed the phonograph. Photographing people who came to the White House and visited at dinners and receptions was also very important to him.” …

“He was pretty technology-oriented for the time,” Card said. “Between the telephone, the telegraph, the phonograph and photography, I think he was pretty much on the cutting edge.” …

Obama’s invocation of the “flat earth” theory in the context of Christopher Columbus’ journey across the ocean also contained some dubious history. …

[H]istorians have long contended that the notion Europeans widely believed the Earth was flat, let alone 15th century Spanish scholars, is a myth developed centuries later.”

More importantly, though, the president’s speech betrays his misunderstanding of the nature of the objections to his energy policy. It’s not that the GOP candidates don’t see any potential in wind or solar energy; it’s that they don’t think it’s the role of the government to prop up alternative energy companies with subsidies. Did the federal government pay Henry Ford to develop the automobile? I didn’t think so.

If anything, Obama believes less in the potential of wind and solar companies than free marketeers who say, “Let them compete!”  He must not think the pioneers of wind and solar will ever find a way to contain costs or market their products without the help of the federal government. What’s that doubt about?

Find a cheap and practical form of energy that will allow Americans to own the cars that they want to own and live the way they want to live and someone from Obama’s EPA will show up at your door literally BEFORE THEY LEFT WASHINGTON to stop you!

Wind and solar will never be practical mainstream sources of power until someone invents a solar panel that works in the dark and a wind turbine that runs when there is no wind. The only practical forms of energy will ALWAYS run on FUEL SOURCES that can run fulltime.

99% of liberals posing as scientists are unaware of the existence or nature of the Sun, a gigantic (relative to Earth) class G2V star at the center of our solar system which runs on a naturally occurring nuclear fusion process. Essentially a gigantic fire in space. Over time, it sometimes gets a little cooler (which is why we have ice ages) but on average, over it’s lifespan it consumes fuel at it’s core, pushing the reactions further FROM the core, causing it to gradually get larger AND hotter. Meaning that over time, the Earth WILL get warmer.

And these scientists can’t explain why temperatures rose on Mars at the same time they did on Earth in the 1990′s. Did Ford build a bunch of gigantic rockets in secret and bomb the planet with Ford Explorers or something?

Of course by being wrong, Columbus opened the way for mass colonization of America, the reason we can understand the intricacies of history and still say he discovered it.

Obama’s mistakes may lead to us losing it.

Cell phones are harmful to the environment. We need to cease production immediately because in 100 years we’ll communicate by thought. Why, IBM apparantly is working on a supercomputer that can read thoughts based on facial expressions. So obviously the technology exists and just needs to be developed. Instead of waiting until it is, let’s cease all American production of cellphones now. While we are waiting for the techonology to be perfected, we can simply buy what we need from our mortal enemies who want to kill us and provide them with the dollars necessary to wage war against us.

“…they’ve been talking down new sources of energy. They dismiss wind power. They dismiss solar power.

Obama believes that the US can WTF with windmills and solar panels, but if that were the case, the Netherlands would be a world leader. Further, these are considered by him to be the hip, new technologies of the future, while fossil fuels are the “dinosaurs” of energy, but how true is that?

Wind-power electricity was first commercialised in 1891, a whole 9 years after the first coal fire electrical power plant went online. Wow! Who knew that 9 years separated T-Rex and Astro Jetson???

Solar Panels? That would put you flooring the Delorean back to the future to the year 1954.

Obama believes that electric cars are the vehicles of tomorrow. Perhaps, but they are not new either. The first electric vehicles were designed in the 1830s.

Obama believes that the US can WTF with high-speed rail, but a 2009 General Accounting Office report that looked at recent high-speed rail projects in France, Spain, and Japan showed them averaging 51 million dollars per mile and a recent CRS report found that only two of the dozens of high-speed rail systems built worldwide in recent years are “estimated” to have recouped initial investment costs. Choo-chooing our way into the future! Hey, why stop there? We can use horses and paddle steamers, too. Just think of all of the new jobs that we could create for blacksmiths and coal shovelers? Oops! Sorry! No coal allowed. How about men to rub sticks together to build fires to boil the water to generate the steam to propel the paddle steamers? Yeah, that’ll work. **eyeroll**

Now, I guess that we could return to the days when sheep were used instead of lawnmowers, slave boys instead of air conditioners, millstones instead of grinders, men instead of machinery, etc., but some of us actually like Progress.

For hundreds of years, many Social Reformers, Socialist, Progressives, Environmentalists, or whatever they call themselves have demonstrated that they are not interested in progress. They have sought regression through policies that would return the people to an agrarian, pre-Industrial Revolution world. From the French Revolution onward, the ideals of Rousseau have been wistfully sought a return to “one with nature” and “hunter-gatherer” existences. Marx wrote about returning to nature and the ability of man to enjoy the pleasure of nature once the oppression of capitalism was removed from society. Today, this goal is cloaked in the insidious label of “sustainability.”

But, look, we’re talking about windmills and solar panels, the case for which longstanding flops is so desperate they are styled by the president as ‘new technology’. Chuckle. And when that’s the case, people know right off the bat you’re just saying stuff, anyway.

Obama, the Luddite.

Science is never settled, you always have to be open to the “Huh, that’s weird” moments.

Like when those neutrinos from CERN showed up in Italy having apparently broken the “settled” maximum speed limit for anything with mass, aka the speed of light. You know from the “settled” Theory of Special Relativity by one A. Einstein. . . (Which people still test facets of routinely)

The last time anyone tried to say the “Science is settled,” was back in the 17th Century when everyone tried to point out to Galileo that Aristotle had settled the science on the Geocentric universe.

Obama also plays a little Falsehood Game with words.

He repeatedly says that we have 2% of the Worlds Proven Reserves.

Proven Reserves are Oil Reserves which have a Well Drilled and Oil Coming Up through that well.

A Recoverable Reserve (such as ANWR) is NOT included in that Source of Oil. And, therefore, not part of Obama’s 2% he likes to harp on so much.

Since it is Generally not productive to drop a well into a Proven Reserve it should be made clear to people when we say “Drill Here, Drill Now” we are not talking about drilling in the Proven Reserves – We are talking about drilling in the Recoverable Reserves.

It should also be noted that the U.S. has a considerably Higher quantity of the World’s Recoverable Reserves.

Mostly because countries like Saudi Aribia Don’t prevent Exploration and Drilling the way the U.S. does.

liberal4life on March 15, 2012 at 4:56 PM

99% of the science is settled on the claim that there has been a warming trend. Far less than that is anywhere even close to settled on whether it is due to the activities of humans. So, no…that’s an utter lie.

MadisonConservative on March 15, 2012 at 5:17 PM

Hey lib4life, what is the noral temp for planet earth? Didn’t think you’d know. Neither does anyone else.

D-fusit on March 15, 2012 at 5:18 PM

and there is nothing more scientifically compelling than ridicule and strawman arguments to further your ‘scientific claims.’

BTW, where are your peer-reviewed publications, champ?

Hey douche bag Jugears, Columbus didn’t think the world was round either.

There. I fixed my own post so it makes sense now.

I’ll tell you what, I don’t know what it’s going to take for the GOP to wake up and realize that they are dealing with socialist Chicago thug politican, but it better happen fast.

Call this fraud, along with the medai, out!

Now, now. He’s just in over his head.

Bitter Clinger on March 15, 2012 at 5:14 PM

Oh yeah, I forgot. Romney believes he’s a “nice” man and McCain believes “we have nothing to fear about Obama”.

[facepalm]

WisRich on March 15, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Paging Dr. Chu….do you agree with this POTUS’ categorization of your fellow scientists???

ted c on March 15, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Driving I heard a few sound bites of a speech he had given, talking about the price of gas and releasing from the national reserves. He is the most trite, most unprofessional, most petty president in my lifetime. If we cannot get together after the primary and vote for whoever wins it and additionally support the ticket enthusiastically, we’ll deserve 4 more years of this nonsense.

I believe I said that in a roundabout way.

And I’m rooting for a bad economy.

The last time anyone tried to say the “Science is settled,” was back in the 17th Century when everyone tried to point out to Galileo that Aristotle had settled the science on the Geocentric universe.

kenashimame on March 15, 2012 at 5:13 PM

Exactly. Anyone claiming that there IS such a thing as “settled” science is just as ignorant and short sighted (and dare I say, flat Earthy?) as the 17th Century Catholic Church which excommunicated Galileo for heresy!

Science is a collection of theories that over time become disproven by evidence and improved by BETTER theories that replace the disproven ones!

IE: Newton was correct, but he wasn’t able to see as far as Einstein, who proved that there were things beyond Newton’s universe…

His science czar was one of the population bomb guys. Their idea of brilliant science is nonsense equations like I=PAT. He’s the most failed debunked scientist ever, and he’s the science czar. The nation will not survive these people even if every Democrat is voted out of office in November.

liberal4life on March 15, 2012 at 4:56 PM

While your 99% number is complete bunk, let’s run with it, and see what happens.

Sixty years ago, the eugenics was accepted as the best way to advance the human race by 99% of scientists. Were they right?

Forty years ago, global cooling was accepted by 99% of scientists. Were they right?

Twenty years ago, 99% of military strategists thought thousands of US troops would die liberating Kuwait. Were they right?

Remind me again why they’re right this time? (Again, assuming you’re right – which you aren’t.)

Washington Nearsider on March 15, 2012 at 5:24 PM

I am patiently waiting your scientific explanation of both the 99% “that is settled” and the apparently 1% that isn’t.

Please, don’t hesitate to dazzle us with your brilliance!

climbnjump on March 15, 2012 at 5:11 PM

The 1% is the greedy corporations and “shadowy” groups working behind the scenes for the nefarious purposes of oppressing and enslaving the 99%.

Everything is about the 99% v. the 1%….even when it comes to hoaxes…and even when the 99%ers do not speak for the 99%.

That is because the MSM considers itself some sort of priesthood of the democrat party and Obama is their current deity.

So I guess this means Hot Air is going to intentionally suppress the Rick Santorum “I want the government to ban internet pr0n” statements from today? No front-page post, just a misleadingly-captioned headline blurb?

Keep hacking away, you guys? It really is pathetic. Maybe you’re just like MSM — completely blind to your institutional bias — but I doubt it. Pretty sure it’s intentional.

Always when the individual is to be sacrificed to intimidate, enrage or supposedly for the benefit of the mob, that’s where our precious Dems originate.

The silver lining out of this is it shows Obama and the Democrats are at the bottom of the barrel.

They’ve got nothing. The have no real facts. No real answers.

So now all they have left with is name calling.

I have faith in the American people. They won’t stand for this petty crap from their President.

“According to Stephen Jay Gould, “there never was a period of ‘flat earth darkness’ among scholars (regardless of how the public at large may have conceptualized our planet both then and now). Greek knowledge of sphericity never faded, and all major medieval scholars accepted the earth’s roundness as an established fact of cosmology.”
