“Hi, how are you? Would you like a free ultrasound?”

posted at 4:15 pm on March 13, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Today, March 13, 2012, is an important day in the pro-life movement. Today is the day a handful of visionaries officially launch “Save the Storks,” a new kind of pro-life initiative. Kristen Walker of New Wave Feminists explains what makes it different:

Here’s what happens: a woman is walking up to an abortion clinic. She is approached by Dave or Daryl or another member of Save the Storks.

“Hi, how are you? Would you like a free ultrasound?”

This is the approach. There is no dangling rosary, no graphic pamphlet, no doom-and-gloom. Just an offer of free help from a non-threatening, friendly, smiling young person.

And then there is the Stork bus. …

It is a bright, lovely blue on the outside, and the inside is clean and free of clutter, with a welcoming but no-nonsense clinical feel. There is a little couch for the mother to sit on and speak to a counselor, and a padded bench where she can lie comfortably.

The ultrasound machine pulls out from underneath the bench. It is operated only by a licensed sonographer whose work is frequently reviewed by an OB/Gyn. In the back there is a small private toilet for pregnancy testing. It isn’t the slightest bit cramped or unpleasant; these mothers get only the best. The completed bus with the ultrasound machine was paid for by private donations to the tune of about $140,000.

The Stork bus is by no means the first mobile ultrasound vehicle — it was Chris Slattery’s mobile sonogram bus that inspired Dave and Joe in the first place — but it may be the smallest, lightest, and most practical. It doesn’t require a permit or special permission to park. It will fit in a parking space or even at a meter. …

The average clinic sidewalk approach is, of necessity, “Please don’t kill your baby. Here’s why. And here’s help.” Because they have their awesome bus, Save the Storks are able to say, “Here’s help. Now please don’t kill your baby. Here’s why.”

It’s a subtle difference — but an important one. Invitation is always more effective than admonishment. (That it’s an invitation also prevents the liberal cry that ultrasound is rape; these women are consenting!) While all sidewalk counselors invite pregnant mothers to consider all their options, “Save the Storks” presents another option in real time.

The campaign is distinctive in other ways, too. For one thing, the minds behind it are clearly creative. From the name — an obvious riff on campaigns to save every animal from turtles to whales to polar bears — to the website, these guys get it. Brand matters. They’re committed to connect with pregnant mothers from the first minute they meet them — on the little things as well as the big.

The Save the Storks bus hits the streets of Dallas today. The “Save the Storks” staff thought Dallas — essentially the birthplace of the institution of abortion — was the appropriate place to start. I agree. But this is just the beginning. They plan to deliver six new buses to pregnancy centers in the next three years and, eventually, to build a national movement. A Stork bus in every major city in America: I’m on board with that.

I am sure the WOMBATS will be excited for this alternative option. Good for “Save the Storks” and Kristen Walker for believing that given a real “choice” some woman would actually choose life over death for their unborn children, not that some will still choose to terminate their unborn children.

I believe, this little group had better watch it’s back…. NOW don’t like giving up their stronghold on our wombs.

(That it’s an invitation also prevents the liberal cry that ultrasound is rape; these women are consenting!)

Tina,

Abortionists routinely do transvag!nal ultrasounds.

I posted this late in the Fluke thread, from Slate via Jill Stanek.

Crying Rape
Pro-choice advocates should quit calling ultrasounds rape.

…The reality is that most abortion patients do receive an ultrasound to date their pregnancies. Since most abortions take place in the first trimester of pregnancy, many of these ultrasounds are performed with a transvag!nal probe, the most effective method for viewing early-stage pregnancies. In the end, whether an ultrasound is performed, and which method is used, reflects either the practice of the abortion provider, the patient’s medical history, or—for a relatively small number of women—an aversion to the transvag!nal method. Most of the time, however, the transvag!nal ultrasound is a useful and common tool that helps providers perform abortions safely and well.

But now that women have heard abortion supporters describe this form of ultrasound as “rape,” will more of them be terrified when they arrive at a clinic and are informed they will have such a procedure?

Ultrasounds are already performed in advance of an abortion, the only difference from the new law is that now the results of the ultrasound has to be shown to the patient.

‘The ultrasound is rape’ argument is so laughable. These pro-abortion advocates don’t even understand their own procedure. Ultrasounds are done with the abortion anyway. The docs usually just turn the screen and don’t turn up the volume on the heart monitor.

The point of the ultrasound is so that the docs know where to aim their scrapers, scalpels and suction machines.

I shut out anyone who was pro-life in my family and maybe this would have stopped me. All these years later, my heart hurts every time I think about the fact that I killed my baby. WryTrvllr on March 13, 2012 at 9:12 PM

Are you? You’re clearly not following the conversation. Parking a van outside a clinic and approaching patients follows in a long history of over eager pro-Lifers who have resorted to harassing patients. Seriously, how many people about to abort a baby want to see an ultrasound of it? No more than they want to look at horrific photos of aborted fetuses. For those that do?…. I don’t think they’re waiting for a van to pull up and some missionary to offer her one.

contrarytopopularbelief on March 14, 2012 at 5:05 AM

This is a good idea. The bottom line is that whether or not abortion is legal, there is always a choice between having the baby and ending the pregnancy in some way. This choice is made by the woman. By reaching out compassionately to the pregnant woman instead of using shock or scare tactics, I believe that more women can be convinced to make the right choice.

Acknowledging the choice of the woman and empowering her to make the right choice while encouraging adoption or keeping the baby is the best way to prevent abortions (other than contraception and abstinence that is).

“Abolitionists: overly concerned with the actions of others since, well, forever.”

I’m a Jew-turned Protestant-turned Catholic…and I don’t believe that Jews who don’t accept Jesus will go to Hell. Jews are God’s chosen people. He’ll get y’all(I’m including my Jewish mother in that)where you need to be.
Relax.

Jesus spoke about this to Nicodemus, a Jewish leader, in John 3:14-18. He is referring to Numbers 21:4-9 in the Tenach (the Old Testament) —

14 “…And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God….”

God loved His Hebrew people so much that He rescued them from slavery in Egypt; but when they sinned against Him, He required them to look toward the bronze serpent on the pole if they wanted to be saved from the poison of the fiery serpents He sent to punish them. They were not automatically saved because they were His Chosen People.

Jesus is saying in these verses that the bronze serpent was a symbol of the death He was about to suffer on the cross in order to pay for the sins (to save from the fatal poison of sin) of everyone who looks to Him in faith (obedient trust).

The need for faith in Jesus in order to be saved applies to my dear relatives as well as yours. My beloved grandmother, and my dear father, are separated from God by their sins forever unless they put their faith (obedient trust) in Jesus before they died.

“Jews for Jesus” have included composer Felix Mendelssohn (who wrote the music to “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”), British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (who wrote that “Christianity is incomprehensible without Judaism, as Judaism is incomplete without Christianity”), planetary astronomer Sir William Herschel; Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice; mystery novelist Andrew Klavan; and actor David Suchet (“Poirot”).

Seriously, how many people about to abort a baby want to see an ultrasound of it?

Then it’s a good thing they can choose to go in the van or not.

What’s wrong, are you afraid of women making an informed choice? Why do you hate women?

The_Livewire on March 14, 2012 at 9:18 AM

We don’t need one of these in every city. We need two at every abortion mill, one down the street to the left and one down the street to the right. And if the “clinic” is on the corner, we need four of them.

God bless them. They’re going to get attacked in every city.

I don’t believe Jews go to Hell. The Catholic Church is fine with my views. It’s one of the reasons why I left Protestantism. Their views on the final destination of non-believing Jews is blood-thirsty and I want no part of it.
Period.

Jesus was a Jew, Ricki, and probably a better one than you. Would you have driven the money changers from temple? Get over yourself and work on dumping your Christian hate. It’s aging you.

“Money changers” ? ….. Uh…….. wow.

Woops, mixed up the quotes in my reply above. Anyway…onward.

More like I’m disturbed that you’re presuming women choosing abortion are uninformed, and need to be coerced, guilted, harassed, and all just moments from going in for a medical procedure which is currently legal. That attitude is indefensible no matter how you twist it.

If you can’t reach women before they’re steps from the abortion clinic you have already lost.

This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing this information.
