“Sluts Unite” against Rush

posted at 4:00 pm on March 11, 2012 by Tina Korbe

The new social liberal theme: Sandra Fluke proves sex shaming is impossible in the face of relentless sex positivity.

Sex positivity? It’s sexual liberation on steroids: Not only is it OK for anyone and everyone to have sex whenever, wherever, however, but it’s positive, desirable. The only taboo is rape, which, according to the sex positivists, is now defined as “penetration, no matter how slight” that occurs “without the consent of the victim.” (Little is said about various forms of sexual deviancy — prostitution, sadomasochism, bestiality — but – if it’s all about subjective pleasure and very little about the objective end of procreation – it’s hard to see why these behaviors would be discouraged.)

To a sex positivist, “sl-t” is — you guessed it — a positive word. Want proof? Two examples:

  1. Sir Richard’s Condoms and the ad agency TDA_Boulder have begun a campaign called “Sl-ts Unite” that expressly aims “to take what was intended to be a hateful, derogatory word and change it into something positive through the power of the collective.” The campaign invites “sl-ts” everywhere to take the “sl-ts” oath and to adopt a Twitter avatar that features a sex-positive slogan. For the full menu of options, click here. Prepare to shake your heads in astonishment! (h/t The Daily Caller)
  2. The international phenomenon of Sl-tWalk, which I wrote about months ago, still goes strong. Slate’s Emily Bazelon writes in a piece that praises Sandra Fluke: “Reclaiming the word slut is also the aim of the SlutWalks, the protest movement that started last spring in Canada and spread to more than 70 cities worldwide. Taking angry inspiration from a Toronto police officer who said the best way for women to prevent being raped is to “avoid dressing like sluts,” the women joining in SlutWalks have marched in all manner of bras, bodices, and other scanty dress. They won both enthusiastic applause and ambivalence from the feminist blogosphere. SlutWalks, and the broader reclamation projection they and Fluke stand for, represent a cultural shift that puts women’s sexual agency front and center rather than modestly cloaking it.” Read the full piece.

I suppose I could go one of several ways in my reaction to this. My first impulse is to fight for traditional sexual morality — not out of prudishness, but out of a genuine desire to promote human flourishing. Evidence exists that married couples have the best sex anyway — and, if contraception fails in a loving marriage, the couple is probably going to accept the resultant child lovingly. Who doesn’t want every child to be conceived in love, brought happily into the world and properly cared for their entire lives? Do liberals want to argue against that? I guess they’d say the best way to get there is to ensure via contraception that kids just aren’t conceived unless the circumstances are right. Unfortunately for that argument, no completely foolproof contraception exists (except abstinence, but who wants to hear that?). The argument for traditional sexual morality takes time, though, and is probably more appropriate in one-on-one settings.

My second impulse is probably more relevant in the realm of public discourse. That impulse is to say this — the rise of sex positivity and the reclamation of the word “sl-t” — is actually the more logical response to Rush Limbaugh’s outburst than liberal outrage. It always seemed a bit odd to me that Fluke would be offended to be called a “sl-t.” Isn’t she a thoroughly modern, sexually liberated woman? Why is it so bad to be called that, then? I’d be offended to be called that because I think it’s wrong to have sex outside of marriage — but Sandra Fluke doesn’t think it’s wrong, so why is she offended? If it’s the word “prostitute” she found offensive, I want to know why she thinks prostitution is wrong.

My third impulse follows closely on the heels of the second and it’s to say what conservatives have said from Day One: We, too, stand for personal freedom and, from a political standpoint at least, we don’t care what anybody does in their own bedroom. But, if a gal asks us to pay for what goes down in her bedroom, you better believe we’ll pipe up about what is and is not OK to us.

Easy solution, Sandra Fluke: Stop asking others to pay for what you do in your private time and space!

Sorry, I don’t prescribe to the biblical view of sexual morality, and see nothing wrong whatsoever with sex before marriage, or encouraging safe sex, or looking at porn, or taking away the stigma of using condoms and birth control.

Of course, the social cons would have you believe that if you encourage any type of sex other than the kind between married couples and only for the purposes of procreation, then the country will collapse in on itself.

Just ask the legislators of Utah-who are about to pass a bill that would make the teaching of anything other than abstinence-only sex education in public schools illegal. Nevermind the fact that there are multiple studies that prove that abstinence-only sex education doesn’t work, and only ends up with teenagers having unprotected sex instead of safe sex. Just ask Texas-which has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the entire country, yet has abstinence-only sex education in all of it’s public schools.

Of course there are teen pregnancies in states where safe sex education is taught, I’m not denying that whatsoever. I am simply arguing that, by teaching teenagers that they can practice safer sex by using condoms and/or birth control, they will not only avoid having an unwanted pregnancy, but, by using a condom, also avoid catching an unwanted STD.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/742469

The influence of formal sex education in the total sexual socialization process is studied through data from a cross-sectional national probability sampling of 1177 male and female American college students. There was no difference in the premarital heterosexual experinece of students who had received a formal sex education course in school and those who had not. Instruction in birth control or instruction about coitus made no difference in sex behavior either. Different teachers or courses during different school years also made no difference in subsequent premarital sexual behavior.

And from the UK…

One Scottish report showed that an elaborate sex education programme involving 80 teachers made no difference whatever.

Another study found that 26 sex education programmes had not delayed sexual activity, improved contraception use or brought down pregnancy rates.

The point is that this “slut” movement is ridiculous on it’s face, no need to play along with it and cite spurious “evidence” to show why it’s a bad thing.

When you start citing “evidence” that means you take their position seriously.

Actually abstinence is the only sure fire way to prevent pregnancy. They teach reproductive health aka sex education and being the deceptive little person you are, there are a great number of other factors invovled in Teen Pregnancy Rate. Our education system tells our young people not to smoke, drink or take illegal drugs, yet some do so anyway.

Condoms can lower the risk, but the truth is they suck! Everyone knows it feels ten times better without them. The youth aren’t that dumb, they know what a condom is. Many just don’t want to use them, they get caught up in a moment or don’t care because they are invincible don’t ya know. Since they are given out for free should I suggest the programs you endorse are a failure. With all the free birth control out there, the rate of unwanted pregnancy through consensual sex should be zero!!!

Ooof! I haven’t even had my first cup of coffee after a sleepless night and I’m already amazed, shocked and confused. I the morning headlines are reflected: an unsourced, slanderous, left-wing propaganda faux-documentary movie about Sarah Palin is pushing being touted as news;

Rush Limbaugh is still being pilloried as a the epitome of evil-christian, misogynistic maliciousness for calling an early middle-aged woman a slut, because she claims she can’t afford the overpriced birth-control pills she wants and she wanted the government to underwrite her sexual activity;

at the same time, Liberals use words far worse than Slut, are decrying the insult used against this woman as if they themselves have any higher sensibilities;

disgusting rage journalists are writing (I hope) satire showing that Republicans lawmakers are maliciously misogynistic and want all young girls who require an abortion to be raped with a device similar to the medical implements that they themselves are asking to be inserted into their same orifice to rip out their newly forming babies, these blobs of unfeeling matter being ironically the result of consenting sexual conduct;

meanwhile Rick Santorum is losing the Catholic vote to a Mormon for his Catholic views;

and ostensible Republicans are saying they aren’t going to vote Republican if the Republicans won’t stop talking about birth control, while the argument was manufactured and is continuing as part of a Democrat distraction and smear campaign;

California is now going to ask all students (apparently other than heterosexuals) to register their LGBT preferences, and also claiming that California is so diverse that it needs appropriate diversity and transparency in its judiciary, and so is going to require judges to state their sexual preferences.

The country is lost, I fear, but in anticipated compliance, let me state my preference for the record: Cow, aged, slender, androgynous, sexually adventurous, and so as to be non-sexist, small-uddered. Please, no letters. I’m already married.

Perhaps by Memorial Day, but almost certainly by July 4th we will be deeply mired in the second dip of the double-dip depression. Massive lay-offs (yes, that’s right, even more of them) will follow shortly thereafter.

My collie says:

We expect that to help jog everyone’s memory.

Barbara Bush says that we treat “compromise” like it’s a dirty word. In the interests of proving to her that some of us are not unwilling to compromise, my dog and I would like to make the following proposal to Ms. Sandra Fluke.

Barbara Bush should take the advice she gave Sarah Palin – stay in your mansion, help the illegal immigrant nannies take care of the great great grandkids and STFU.

It wasn’t that long ago I used to filter by state when I searhed for jobs on Monster or other job websites. Now I just search nationwide b/c I don’t get a lot of new jobs even on a national search. And Democrats want to say the economy is coming back. Geez. Lot of engineers including me are working in states we never thought we be in b/c of this economy.

BOR had a segment of Sandra Fluke Friday. It appears she is spending spring break in California with her boyfriend, whose father just happens to be a major Democratic donor:

http://dailycaller.com/2012/03/10/o%E2%80%99reilly-sandra-flukes-boyfriend-son-of-democratic-stalwart-william-mutterperl/

Apparently her boyfriend has enough money to fly her to California but not enough money for birth control pills (or glasses).

The Bible warned us in the last days scoffers would be walking after their own lusts and doubting the Second Coming of Christ:

“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? (where is Jesus?) for since the fathers fell asleep (for since our ancestors died), all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” 2 Peter 3:3-4

slickwillie2001 on March 11, 2012 at 6:09 PM

I am personally offended by all this sl_t talk and want Ms. Fluke to apologize to me…

She is in CALI on vacay with some wealthy liberal scion (I hope she brought her “pills” with her), so she has my permission to drive over to my house, knock on the front door, and apologize for offending my and my wallet for this manufactured tempest in a teapot…

Khun Joe on March 11, 2012 at 6:11 PM

SOmething about Fluke makes me think she’s probably a lesbian. That would make this whole thing even more absurd if that is true.

I tried my hand at it last week, Ms. Dee. Went like this:

There was an old coed named Fluke,
Whose name, it is said, rhymes with “truck.”
Confronted with bills
For birth control pills,
Said she, “Fluke! Pass the taxpayers the buck!”

Yeah. Give her a helmet and she could play middle linebacker.

CyberCipher on March 11, 2012 at 6:20 PM

At the start of this entire fiasco a HA commenter brilliantly commented that Flukey looked like John Kerry testifying before congress. I can’t recall who said it but it was spot on.

Coffee Party -> No Labels -> Slut Walk -> Sluts Unite

HotAirian on March 11, 2012 at 6:33 PM

I’ve got nothing against sluts – they’re good to have around if you’re a single guy looking for a good time. But if you are – accept it and can the hypocrisy.
I don’t really buy into the biblical directive either – regardless of being raised Catholic, I had my fun before getting married, including with my wife (before marriage) – but I’ve been married for 24 years now and never cheated – although there have been temptations. Of course being married to a jealous possessive redhead has a bit to do with that – but if what you get at home is good why bother going after anyone else?

dentarthurdent on March 11, 2012 at 6:38 PM

by teaching teenagers that they can practice safer sex by using condoms and/or birth control, they will not only avoid having an unwanted pregnancy, but, by using a condom, also avoid catching an unwanted STD.

theoddmanout on March 11, 2012 at 5:03 PM

Sorry, but condoms and birth control is NOT ‘safer’ than abstinence.

A really good sex-ed class would include abstinence and that little “inconvenient truth.”

Religious_Zealot on March 11, 2012 at 6:46 PM

I think all this proves is that once again, Rush cutting-edge and out in front of the trends.

;)

I still maintain that SLVT is a derogatory term, and Sandra Fluke was, by her own testimony, deserving of the term. Now, if she’s not a laying on her back “slut”, she’s proven by her lying about her real age, agenda at Georgetown, and being a willing pawn in a dog-and-pony show that she’s a democrat hack “slut”. Somebody alert her pimp, Anita Dunn.

There once was a woman named Sandra
Who went to D.C. just to pander,
She said, “You pay the bills
For our birth control pills,
And for everyone else to transgender!”

To need crate-loads of condoms by truck.

Okay. Done.

For now.

itsspideyman on March 11, 2012 at 6:59 PM

I also believe that the responsible use of birth control is an essential component of a mature, civilized society.

Jeebus

of course that mature, civilized society doesn’t need to burden itself with responsible behavior.

donabernathy on March 11, 2012 at 7:16 PM

Referring to yourself as a Slut (as is also the case with referring to yourself as a N****r, a Queer, etc.) is a profound case of self-disrespect. If you don’t respect yourself, you can hardly expect others to respect you.

teacherman on March 11, 2012 at 7:27 PM

I wish that we could get some clarity here. Is slut a permissible word to use or not? Or does it depend upon who is saying it?
