“Sluts Unite” against Rush

posted at 4:00 pm on March 11, 2012 by Tina Korbe

The new social liberal theme: Sandra Fluke proves sex shaming is impossible in the face of relentless sex positivity.

Sex positivity? It’s sexual liberation on steroids: Not only is it OK for anyone and everyone to have sex whenever, wherever, however, but it’s positive, desirable. The only taboo is rape, which, according to the sex positivists, is now defined as “penetration, no matter how slight” that occurs “without the consent of the victim.” (Little is said about various forms of sexual deviancy — prostitution, sadomasochism, bestiality — but – if it’s all about subjective pleasure and very little about the objective end of procreation – it’s hard to see why these behaviors would be discouraged.)

To a sex positivist, “sl-t” is — you guessed it — a positive word. Want proof? Two examples:

  1. Sir Richard’s Condoms and the ad agency TDA_Boulder have begun a campaign called “Sl-ts Unite” that expressly aims “to take what was intended to be a hateful, derogatory word and change it into something positive through the power of the collective.” The campaign invites “sl-ts” everywhere to take the “sl-ts” oath and to adopt a Twitter avatar that features a sex-positive slogan. For the full menu of options, click here. Prepare to shake your heads in astonishment! (h/t The Daily Caller)
  2. The international phenomenon of Sl-tWalk, which I wrote about months ago, still goes strong. Slate’s Emily Bazelon writes in a piece that praises Sandra Fluke: “Reclaiming the word slut is also the aim of the SlutWalks, the protest movement that started last spring in Canada and spread to more than 70 cities worldwide. Taking angry inspiration from a Toronto police officer who said the best way for women to prevent being raped is to “avoid dressing like sluts,” the women joining in SlutWalks have marched in all manner of bras, bodices, and other scanty dress. They won both enthusiastic applause and ambivalence from the feminist blogosphere. SlutWalks, and the broader reclamation projection they and Fluke stand for, represent a cultural shift that puts women’s sexual agency front and center rather than modestly cloaking it.” Read the full piece.

I suppose I could go one of several ways in my reaction to this. My first impulse is to fight for traditional sexual morality — not out of prudishness, but out of a genuine desire to promote human flourishing. Evidence exists that married couples have the best sex anyway — and, if contraception fails in a loving marriage, the couple is probably going to accept the resultant child lovingly. Who doesn’t want every child to be conceived in love, brought happily into the world and properly cared for their entire lives? Do liberals want to argue against that? I guess they’d say the best way to get there is to ensure via contraception that kids just aren’t conceived unless the circumstances are right. Unfortunately for that argument, no completely foolproof contraception exists (except abstinence, but who wants to hear that?). The argument for traditional sexual morality takes time, though, and is probably more appropriate in one-on-one settings.

My second impulse is probably more relevant in the realm of public discourse. That impulse is to say this — the rise of sex positivity and the reclamation of the word “sl-t” — is actually the more logical response to Rush Limbaugh’s outburst than liberal outrage. It always seemed a bit odd to me that Fluke would be offended to be called a “sl-t.” Isn’t she a thoroughly modern, sexually liberated woman? Why is it so bad to be called that, then? I’d be offended to be called that because I think it’s wrong to have sex outside of marriage — but Sandra Fluke doesn’t think it’s wrong, so why is she offended? If it’s the word “prostitute” she found offensive, I want to know why she thinks prostitution is wrong.

My third impulse follows closely on the heels of the second and it’s to say what conservatives have said from Day One: We, too, stand for personal freedom and, from a political standpoint at least, we don’t care what anybody does in their own bedroom. But, if a gal asks us to pay for what goes down in her bedroom, you better believe we’ll pipe up about what is and is not OK to us.

Easy solution, Sandra Fluke: Stop asking others to pay for what you do in your private time and space!

I’d say if Fluke was having so much sex that she spent 3000 in 3 years on it and was going broke, characterizing her as kind of a slut isn’t that illogical. The reality is nobody believes, especially Rush, that she spent that amount of money on birth control. He was mocking her absurd 3000 figure.

Dr. Tesla on March 11, 2012 at 7:39 PM

I wish that we could get some clarity here. Is slut a permissible word to use or not? Or does it depend upon who is saying it?

Worse…when did the definition of non-consensual insertion as rape become ideologically driven? It’s not, TIna. It never has been. Liberals love to pretend Conservatives all think like Tina.

Amjean on March 11, 2012 at 10:48 PM

congratulations gloria- women are once again contented- rather puckishly emo-ironic ecstatic actually- about being viewed only in terms of their sexuality and body parts: nothing but ‘hos, bunnies. and pieces of ass. congratulations. you must be proud.

this doesn’t mean that someone like me who identifies as a real old skool feminist doesn’t think the right is full of it for insisting that its any of their business whether or not consenting adults have a sling and whips in the bedroom.it’s none of your business.why are you so obsessed with the sex lives of other adults ? supporting personal freedom does not mean i want to know anything whatsoever about sandra fluke’s sex life nor do i want to fund her or anyone’s ‘ sex positivity’.

not that i don’t think both the left and right are usually wrong with their misinformed projections about rape and violence against women. rape is among the least prosecuted of all crimes- even the rapes of children by serial ‘molesters’( or they would never be allowed to become multiple offenders.). i see no one on the left trying to legally redefine rape in any way that protects victims or aids in convicting even the most violent of perpetrators.what i see is a society and a legal system(leftist controlled) where woman are largely held responsible for crimes against them or wherein those crimes are minimized(like say pardoning a bunch wife killers or rapists if you are certain republican governors.) . both sides indulge this- or there wouldn’t be so many serial rapists roaming the country or murdered women showing up on gilgo beach nor so few rape convictions. our society has a real and serious problem with crimes against women because they are women- and the left refuses to deign to have women protected by those ridiculous hate crimes laws and the right views women who are not shy about their sexuality as deviants who are inviting their own misfortune, ‘asking for it’ and frequently indulge in minimizing if not disappearing the whole premise of criminal rape.misogyny is not confined to the left or the right-it exists across the spectrum. both the right and the left have plenty of blame to lay concerning rape and in neither case does the fault seem to lie with the rapist.

the whole slut walk phenomena is nothing but a retread of the radical left exploitative free love hippie spew from the 60s. all those radical commie enclaves basically shamed and bullied women into making themselves available to any man who wanted them- because that’s what ‘ freedom’ is to leftists males- plenty of free and easy no strings attached chick action. there was a time when feminists recognized this as a ploy, and manipulation by run of the mill freedom fighter- rapists like billy ‘free as a bird’ ghost writer. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2106113/posts. that time is long past. sadly. cheerleading your own oppression is the same old liberation for the left. we need Take Back the Night not Slut Walks.

Maybe these ladies ought to think of why promiscuity, especially female promiscuity, has been so frowned upon. You lose points if you talk about fathering a child. Points are awarded for explaining transfer of STDs, the social effects of out-of-wedlock pregnancy, and the way in which slutty women change men for the worse.

I joke that I can tell by the third date whether or not a man has dated a “sexually empowered” woman recently, except it’s not a joke. Those who have dated women with some sense of virtue – if imperfect, misguided, or of the “Let’s wait a year until we’re sure that we’re in love” type – are wonderful boyfriends. Those who have dated other women are sexually demanding, entitled, emotionally stunted, and incapable of the sort of self-sacrifice that a romantic relationship entails. Good men are nurtured, not created out of thin air.

Roxeanne de Luca on March 11, 2012 at 11:20 PM

My guess is that the people who started this “proud to be slut” group would not respect people, who, due to personal convictions/ religious beliefs/ health concerns/ traditional morality, choose not to have sex.

“Free sex” types (usually on the left, but I’ve seen a few conservatives like that too), based on what I’ve observed, treat people who choose to abstain as cold fish, wackos, or as repressed (as in an episode of Fox television show “Glee,” where an adult female character told the teens who abstained of their own choice that they were cold fish; she mocked them).

It’s like how liberals say they’re tolerant, but they only mean of people who agree with them on politics and other topics. They’re totally intolerant towards conservatives, Christians, and pro life advocates.

Little is said about various forms of sexual deviancy — prostitution …

See, this is where you lose me.

Grouping prostitution with S&M and beasties.

First of all … S&M isn’t really a “deviancy” since the term covers such a broad spectrum. Lightly tying your lover to the bedposts with nylons is “S&M” and it’s hardly “deviant”. One of the top fantasies that women have is a “forced” fantasy and I know this from personal experience with several women I dated. They trusted me enough to ask me to “indulge” that fantasy – but acting like a r@pist is not my thing (I wouldn’t know where to begin on that). I know a lot of wives have their husbands indulge them in this and they enjoy it. How is that deviancy?

Prostitution is a “deviancy”?

LOL – it’s the oldest profession in the world, Tina. Let me ask you something – what has your prohibitionist laws against prostitution (executed throughout the millennia of human existence) accomplished?

Answer – nothing. Like an old New Orleans Mayor said – “Prostitution may be illegal – but that doesn’t make it unpopular”.

Why shouldn’t a woman have a right to ask for compensation for a service? The same way a cook or a doctor would? What makes sex different? People’s warped attitudes about it? Relax – it’s just sex, Tina.

And by the way … which one of the ten commandments makes prostitution a sin? Which one makes S&M a sin? As much as people love to rant about God and the Ten Commandments – they will never escape the fact that there are ONLY ten of them!

There are three different versions of the Ten Commandments. (probably more than that.)

I’m still not convinced that Sandra Fluke’s sexual encounters require contraception. Wether or not she does, I don’t care. And none of this should be any of my business. It only becomes my business when I’m asked to pay for or subsidize it. It’s kinda like a teenager asking their father to buy them a six pack and expecting not to give you third degree.

Sandra Fluke is more than just a whore, she is also an attention whore. Stop giving her attention.

Pretty soon someone will come up with a “how many sl*ts does it take to sc**w in a lightbulb?” I don’t have an answer myself. Or maybe they already exist.

Does this mean Rush can start calling them sl_ts again?
