Breaking: US soldier held after rampage, 15 Afghan civilians killed

posted at 10:27 am on March 11, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

This is simply awful, if true — and it appears it is:

A U.S. soldier was taken into custody in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, a few hours after he opened fire on Afghan civilians, killing 15, U.S. and Afghan officials said.

The shooting took place at approximately 3 a.m. as a lone soldier left a checkpoint in Kandahar province’s Panjwai district and opened fire on civilians in two villages, said Javed Faisal, the director of the provincial government’s media center.

Citing preliminary reports, Faisal said at least 15 people were killed and five were wounded. Provincial authorities said they were awaiting news from an investigative team sent to the villages before releasing a definitive death toll.

The BBC reports that the death toll is 16.  The US has not formally acknowledged that the shootings were perpetrated by an American soldier, but are investigating the incident:

Lt Gen Adrian Bradshaw, deputy commander of Nato-led forces, said he was unable to “explain the motivation behind such callous acts”, adding that “our thoughts and prayers are with those caught in this tragedy”.

The soldier has not been named, but is thought to be a staff sergeant.

He is reported to have walked off his base at around 03:00 local time (22:30 GMT Saturday) and headed to nearby villages, moving methodically from house to house.

If this is true, this will make the Koran burnings look like an Occupy protest.  Atrocities happen in every war even if they aren’t policy, but they can inflame the populace and make it impossible to constrain them.  That may happen even if the shooter turns out to be someone else, a possibility that looks fairly unlikely at the moment anyway:

Maj. Jason Waggnor, a U.S. military spokesman, said several civilians wounded in the shooting were being treated at American medical facilities. He said there is no information yet on the shooter’s motive.

“He walked right off base, started shooting civilians, and returned to the base and turned himself in,” Waggnor said.

Expect some more high-level apologies if this turns out to be accurate, and this time I doubt anyone can argue with the need to offer them.

I would also like the 9 children clarified.

Many times however, age is a matter of complete indifference to recruiters. A study on Afghanistan noted, “Many children whose age had been mentioned clearly in their national ID card as less than 18 years were taken to [a] special military commission where the military officers amended their age to meet the criteria of military service. In this way they were sending children aged less than 14 years to the armed forces.

It looks likes since the “Entirely permissible disposal of defaced Korans by burning” that the Taliban propaganda arm is working over time.

This smells like Taliban propagandist Adam Gadahn

Most of them are rock solid, but there are obvious problems. I was assaulted (physical contact was minor but no joke) months ago and complained about it. Related, I also complained that Master Sergeant C.J. Grisham at a different base (Kandahar Air Field, near this morning’s shootings) represented a lethal threat. My words were dismissed as drama. Now look…months after my warnings, Grisham went to the clinic at Kandahar Air Field with mental problems. This guy, and quite a few others need to be weeded from the force. Grisham publicly ideated killing me. He did it in writing. Army ignored it. Now we have breaking news of an American troop shooting Afghan civilians this morning. This is confirmed by the military.

From Michael Yon’s site. Apparently there were only a handful of US soldiers there, so the list of of potential suspects is fairly short to begin with.

If somebody can basically walk through the camp and point out the psychos, what are the odds everyone stationed there didn’t already know about it a long time ago?

This kind of thing CAN happen out of the clear blue sky. But that’s one out of a million. The vast majority of the time it can be spotted a mile away. Why wasn’t anything done a LONG time ago?

No, that’s a fantastic move, to hold one party accountable for the words of another. That’s genius. And it’s never called into question when someone on the opposing side does it to a radio host or a candidate or whomever is in your good graces and favor. No, because it’s valid tactic. Though not as good as profanity and name calling, because that’s how one makes convincing arguments.

In the last 30 days, they have killed over 400 people around the world, and by they, I mean those g*ddamn mooslims. Thats 30 FREAKIN DAYS. Let me try this, for all you liberal, bleeding-heart, mooslim loving, America-hating s#itstains…

1. More people are killed by Islamists each year than in all 350 years of the Spanish Inquisition combined.

2. Islamic terrorists murder more people every day than the Ku Klux Klan has in the last 50 years.

3. More civilians were killed by Muslim extremists in two hours on September 11th than in the 36 years of sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland.

4. 19 Muslim hijackers killed more innocents in two hours on September 11th than the number of American criminals executed in the last 65 years.

You should be thanking God Almighty that we have soldiers who are willing to do what needs to be done to make sure your pansy asses can come on here and spout your vile rhetoric against him, as he and his compatriots shed gallons of blood, sweat, and tears fighting enemies both foreign and domestic, and by domestic I mean Obama and his media. According to what I read in the press, these soldiers are hated by the Afghan civilians, treated like enemies by their Afghan allies and hung out to dry by their own Commander in Chief. That’s the perfect climate for a humanitarian catastrophe.

“….After receiving permission from his battalion
commanders, Waddell ordered Marine snipers to open fire on the man, and
he was hit. A group of Afghans rushed to the man, put him on a tractor
and attempted to flee. Waddell ordered the snipers to hit the engine
block of the tractor, disabling it so the man believed to be a bomb
maker would not escape. The tractor was hit but no civilians were
injured.

Then, about three weeks later, the civilians who helped remove the wounded man from the area were found to be teenagers.

As a result, Waddell was demoted from
executive officer, and the battalion commander, Lt. Col. Seth Folsom,
determined he had violated rules of engagement that governed when
Marines could fire, and at whom. Folsom said Wadell “is not recommended
for promotion” and “in violation of [combat rules] during an
engagement.” The report stated that “noncombatant local nationals” were
in the area of direct fire and that “the engagement resulted in a
damaged local national vehicle.”

I’m so glad I’m not in any longer. This situation is demoralizing beyond belief. I wouldn’t want to fight under such rules and on the orders of such commanders. Just the ordinary stupidity in the military is bad enough, without raising it to a first principle.

You do shame to our nation, to our valiant warriors, and to the human race, you vile wretch.

Barack Obama, recipient of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, has killed, at least, 535 civilians, including 60 children, in Pakistan alone since taking office.

liberal4life on March 11, 2012 at 1:36 PM

If what we know now is true – I mean the killed children – then it was not a mission. It might have been something like a “folie a deux”, several people talking themselves into a violent rage. Maybe alcohol was involved.

According to what I read in the press, these soldiers are hated by the Afghan civilians, treated like enemies by their Afghan allies and hung out to dry by their own Commander in Chief. That’s the perfect climate for a humanitarian catastrophe.

Gelsomina on March 11, 2012 at 1:25 PM

And sadly as I pointed out several pages back, the Taliban and Al Qaeda regularly engage in and consider perfidy to be a perfectly legitimate strategic tactic. At this point for all we really know, this was in fact a S/F mission that succeeded in taking out a high value target where a couple of civilians were inadvertently killed because of the Taliban’s reliance on perfidy and the locals, who are friendly/loyal to the Taliban are exaggerating the number and ages of the civilian casualties.

God forbid we actually wait for a full incident response report and not take the word of the local Afghanistan/Taliban supporters who are documented to fabricate details as part of their propaganda war.

Schad, I like you, but don’t tell me what to do. I am directing my comments solely based on the premise of this story being true, which I have already stated is inconclusive.

Those here, however, who also comment based on the premise of the story being true, and who proceed to spit on the corpses of innocent civilians murdered at our hands, are the lowest form of slime this website has yet seen. If you defend them, my respect for you will be lost.

Yeah, I’m not getting it either. This is a blog where controversial political ideas are discussed and debated, including on life and death topics, crime, war, culture, and so on. Military family members come here TO discuss them. If they don’t want to, they don’t have to.

It isn’t a local chapter of whatever support organization exists in their unit. They should know this. People might disagree here.

Also, most military members and their families can’t be, I hope, OK with what happened here. If they were, I’d attack them, but … they aren’t. Their decency would lead most of them to oppose this. It’s the radical far-right-wing unthinking nutball types attracted to conservative political blogs that think this is great since it was just “muzzie” children who died.

MadisonConservative on March 11, 2012 at 1:44 PM

No, when an Afghan kills our soldiers, it’s cold-blooded Islamacism. When an American, occupying soldier murders women and children, it’s combat stress.

Dante on March 11, 2012 at 1:33 PM

Correct. When American soldiers do things like has been alleged here, it is an anomaly, a terrible deviation from our ordinary and noble conduct, and thus must have a reason outside of the usual conduct of American soldiers. When Islamists kill, it is de rigueur, ordinary and expected, and requires no explanation except to say that they were Islamists. So, yes, your assessment is correct.

But Sunday’s shooting could push that agreement further away.

“This is a fatal hammer blow on the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan.

Whatever sliver of trust and credibility we might have had following the burnings of the Quran is now gone,” said David Cortright, the director of policy studies at Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and an advocate for a quick withdrawal from Afghanistan.
