Video: CNN beclowns itself painting Breitbart editor-in-chief as racist

posted at 10:25 am on March 8, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Soledad O’Brien and her CNN panel manage to stumble into Contessa Brewer territory in this appearance by attempting to paint Breitbart.com editor-in-chief Joel Pollak as a racist for making a point about Barack Obama’s support for a proponent of “critical race theory” during his days at Harvard Law School. Joel ends up in an argument with a woefully unprepared O’Brien on the theory itself, but the actual facepalm moment goes to one of her panelists, who asks Joel why he’s so afraid of black people:

For CNN and the uninformed — but I repeat myself — here’s Joel’s lovely wife Julia from Joel’s Congressional campaign in 2010:

The only intelligent comment from the panel comes from Amy Holmes, who asked why the media didn’t cover this in 2008, and why the MSM didn’t exhibit any curiosity at all about Obama’s days in college and his activism there. Holmes scolds the media for acting as gatekeepers in the service of protecting Obama, which is of course the Breitbart point in releasing these videos now. Of course, that’s probably because Amy Holmes is afraid of black people, or something.

Frankly, it’s clear that no one at CNN does critical thinking, on race theory or anything else. The point of Andrew’s final project isn’t so much to make Obama’s early radical ties clear; it’s to point out how the media tried to keep them quiet. This uninformed attack from O’Brien and most of the CNN panel is a great demonstration of the very point that Andrew wanted to make with these videos. All they needed to say — and what Holmes tried to say at one point — is that plenty of people toy with radicalism in college, but drop those passions when they get into the real world, and that college activism isn’t terribly germane twenty years later with a term as President already in place. They fell into the trap set by Andrew and Joel, and somewhere Andrew is enjoying a mighty laugh over it.

By the way, I got a chance to see Joel and Julia this week at the memorial service for Andrew Breitbart, and meet their beautiful new daughter Maya. I’m quite sure that Julia also got a big laugh out of this segment, and I’m equally sure she won’t be the only one who does.

Del Dolemonte on March 8, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Not uncommon in media/journalism.

A lot of them earn their Harvard, and Yale degrees, in law or otherwise, and decide to do something “more fun” instead. Television has been dominated by Ivy League producers and writers for decades now, and that’s true from your News to your Sit-Coms. So your average Journalism graduate from Columbia (as if that’s any better) gets eaten up by competition with Lit. and Law degrees from Harvard.

contrarytopopularbelief on March 8, 2012 at 5:41 PM

See, KeninCT? This is why we laugh at you. Here’s a reasoned response to my post. Not the simplesimon parrot act you are so fond of.

BTW, contrary, O’Brien while at Harvard was offered an internship at WBZ TV solely because of her medical training, not because of any journalistic background.

Del Dolemonte on March 8, 2012 at 6:25 PM

This is the first time i’ve seen an interview with Pollak, i have to say i was impressed! well spoken and calm in the face of such bias.

the same cannot be said for soledad. the condescending “is, is this it, is this the big bombshell, i’m just trying to understand…” yeah, no you’re not lady. when a person is truly trying to understand another’s viewpoint, they do not talk that way. what i don’t understand is, if this were truly nothing, then why is he even on the show? why did she say he’ll be back as they release more? aren’t there more important things to talk about if this were truly nothing?

as for the white guy pointing out his whiteness, wow! just wow! in his mind obama can do no wrong because he’s black. so to have someone vet obama, to this guy, is unthinkable. it must be that joel is afraid of black people. to him, there’s no other reason to vet a president of the U.S.?

But it is absolutely correct. The Duke false prosecution was the result of “Critical race theory” put into practice – the falsely accused were guilty until proven innocent.

MNHawk on March 8, 2012 at 6:51 PM

Let’s talk about Soledad’s employer, CNN.

1. They first got into trouble many years ago for falsely accusing the US of dropping nerve gas on civilians in Laos.

2. Later their CEO admitted, in an op-ed piece in the New York Times, that CNN intentionally suppressed reporting the atrocities taking place in Iraq for a decade, solely to keep Saddam happy so he would let them keep their Baghdad Bureau up and running.

3. Said CNN CEO later had to resign in disgrace, after falsely claiming to a prominent audience in Switzerland that US soldiers had “murdered” Iraqi journalists.

4. And just a few years ago, CNN excitedly showed (in prime time no less) video provided by our enemies in Iraq, showing the sniper’s-eye view thru his gunsight just before pulling the trigger on his US enemy.

Yep, that is quite a Distinguished List of “Accomplishments”.

-
Crap… She’s married.
-
Although the ‘use to be a vegetarian now I like prime rib’ line was a ‘what’ moment…
She still nails the truth about the media just passing the info on and letting the public decide… instead of the media deciding by filtering this stuff out.

I like the part where Soledad interrupts Pollak and says someone was talking in her ear. Someone wiki’d Critical Race Theory quickly for her and fed her a line, which she parroted. Too bad that same someone didn’t do a quick search on Pollak and tell her or Jay Thomas, “Uhh, guys, his wife’s not white. Don’t play the race card this time.”

Being a prepared professional is hard.

Christien on March 8, 2012 at 8:06 PM

Soledad and her posse got schooled.

That had to be hard for them to take: three of them couldn’t derail Joel’s poise, even trying a classic game of let’s-change-the-subject to knock him off balance. They baited him, he didn’t bite, so they started sputtering. Desperation. They even tried to imply he’s a racist only to FAIL.

It was actually kind of beautiful.

It’s going to be really hard for them to say the video release was such a dud when they get their panties in a wad like that.

Pwned.

I noticed they are very worried about a bombshell. They tried to hook pollack into telling them what they are going to show next and he gave them a smokescreen answer. Very nervous they may be worried about racial remarks Obama may have said on tape or his view in israel , remember he was a community agitator and most likely was filmed time to time.

The grand prize would be the khalidi tape in which Obama may have said Israel should not exist. Game over

This is a sad piece of tape for CNN, Soledad looks lost and attempts to change the subject the numerous times she’s caught having a low IQ. She keeps trying to talk over Amy and Joel yet shouts them down if they dare try to interrupt one of the other scholars on her panel.

The cake comes from Jay Thomas just being a turd, what a moron who doesn’t see he’s being used a firewall for these putzs so if anything happens they can go with the “He’s a comedian he’s just being funny” excuse. Those on the Left always want a bombshell or ‘smoking gun’.

This isn’t about one incident but the ongoing course of affairs and how the media are compromising the open discussion about candidates by taking up a biased and partisan side without saying so. In doing that and having the MFM feel they are the gatekeepers, they believe that this imbues them with the power and right to control public discussion. The right of the free press is held by the people, not the press and the MFM has done its best to try and form a shell of protective ‘journalism’ around their bias.

The Breitbart team is not offering a smoking gun or bombshell, but an ongoing series of examples along with back-up evidence to address the critics of their reporting. They are not just vetting Obama or any Republican candidate, but the MFM, itself both New Media and Old. This is done to build a case, not to put out ADHD incident reports and ‘oooo, shiney!’ coverage for the public, but to treat the public as adults not brain-addled children as the Left and MFM do. In less than three days the entire Breitbart organization has set up the context for the video, what that context is both backwards and forwards in time, responded to their critics and enjoin them to do their job in the vetting process in 2012 and not cover up for their biases but present them and their reporting openly.

The responses were predicted by Breitbart and his organization came to understand just how reactionary the Left is today.

This isn’t about exploding a candidacy, but laying the groundwork for a new formulation of media that is accountable to you, to me, to the public and held to account when it does NOT report against partisan interests. Please, I do not mind openly partisan media… just say where you come from, why you come from that direction and give some insight into how that shapes what you report on… I can handle the rest from there if you are open and honest about yourself and hold your reporting up to account by scrutiny. That is what members of our civil society who wish to report to the larger society must do and haven’t done for decades, while saying that they reach some standard of ‘objectivity’ that is never spoken, published, promulgated or utilized by calling out those who do not uphold it.

Yes there is a lot of vetting going on this cycle.

And it is the harbinger of the future and yet as old as the hills.

I’ll bet that this “vetting” by Breitbart.com that’s supposedly aimed at Obama and yet unnamed politicians is merely a front for a calculated and potent assault on the mainstream media’s credibility. This interview is Step 1 of many in a long process. Andrew, you magnificent bastard.

Critical Race Theory is not the same thing as Conflict Theory. Perhaps very similar to each other, but still different theories. Conflict Theory does not concern itself exclusively with race, but instead focuses on the so called bourgeoisie dominance of society over the masses. Critical Race Theory claims everything in society is racist.
