Video: CNN beclowns itself painting Breitbart editor-in-chief as racist

posted at 10:25 am on March 8, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Soledad O’Brien and her CNN panel manage to stumble into Contessa Brewer territory in this appearance by attempting to paint Breitbart.com editor-in-chief Joel Pollak as a racist for making a point about Barack Obama’s support for a proponent of “critical race theory” during his days at Harvard Law School. Joel ends up in an argument with a woefully unprepared O’Brien on the theory itself, but the actual facepalm moment goes to one of her panelists, who asks Joel why he’s so afraid of black people:

For CNN and the uninformed — but I repeat myself — here’s Joel’s lovely wife Julia from Joel’s Congressional campaign in 2010:

The only intelligent comment from the panel comes from Amy Holmes, who asked why the media didn’t cover this in 2008, and why the MSM didn’t exhibit any curiosity at all about Obama’s days in college and his activism there. Holmes scolds the media for acting as gatekeepers in the service of protecting Obama, which is of course the Breitbart point in releasing these videos now. Of course, that’s probably because Amy Holmes is afraid of black people, or something.

Frankly, it’s clear that no one at CNN does critical thinking, on race theory or anything else. The point of Andrew’s final project isn’t so much to make Obama’s early radical ties clear; it’s to point out how the media tried to keep them quiet. This uninformed attack from O’Brien and most of the CNN panel is a great demonstration of the very point that Andrew wanted to make with these videos. All they needed to say — and what Holmes tried to say at one point — is that plenty of people toy with radicalism in college, but drop those passions when they get into the real world, and that college activism isn’t terribly germane twenty years later with a term as President already in place. They fell into the trap set by Andrew and Joel, and somewhere Andrew is enjoying a mighty laugh over it.

By the way, I got a chance to see Joel and Julia this week at the memorial service for Andrew Breitbart, and meet their beautiful new daughter Maya. I’m quite sure that Julia also got a big laugh out of this segment, and I’m equally sure she won’t be the only one who does.

It does answer the question. Only one leans HARD right. And only one leans HARD left. The rest are in the middle. But people around here seem to think one is center-right and the rest are all hard-left. It is wrong.

complete BS. In 2008 when they did that poll, 53% identified themselves as moderate.

sob0728 on March 8, 2012 at 2:31 PM

What exactly in my post are you referring to? I assume it’s this:

t’s also important to remember that numerous repeated studies and surveys have shown that the vast majority of those in the journalism media field, especially in Washington DC, identify themselves as Democrats. It’s always been well over 90%.

I wasn’t quoting a 2008 poll, all I said was that “numerous studies and surveys” showed MSM journalists identified with Democrats.

Some Inconvenient Truths:

In 1964, 94 percent of media professionals voted for Democrat Lyndon Johnson over Republican Barry Goldwater.

In 1968, 86 percent voted for Democrat Hubert Humphrey over Republican Richard Nixon.

In 1972, 81 percent voted for Democrat George McGovern over the incumbent Nixon.

In 1976, 81 percent voted for Democrat Jimmy Carter over Republican Gerald Ford.

In 1980, twice as many cast their ballots for Carter rather than Republican Ronald Reagan.

In 1984, 58 percent supported Democrat Walter Mondale, whom Reagan defeated in the biggest landslide in presidential election history.

In 1988, White House correspondents from various major newspapers, television networks, magazines, and news services supported Democrat Michael Dukakis over Republican George H.W. Bush by a ratio of 12-to-1.

In the 1992 Presidential election, among Washington bureau chiefs and congressional correspondents, the disparity was 89 percent vs. 7 percent, in Clinton’s favor over the incumbent Bush.

All told, White House correspondents during the late ’80s and early ’90s voted for Democrats at 7 times the rate at which they voted for Republicans.

In a 2004, poll of campaign journalists, those based outside of Washington, D.C., supported Democrat John Kerry over Republican George W. Bush by a ratio of 3-to-1. Those based inside the Beltway favored Kerry by a 12-to-1 ratio.

In a 2004 nationwide poll of 300 newspaper and television journalists, 52 percent supported Kerry, while 19 percent supported Bush.

In a 2008 survey of 144 journalists nationwide, journalists were 8 times likelier to make campaign contributions to Democrats than to Republicans.

CNN’s Soledad O’Brien is quite possibly the most racially naive racist ever seen on television. It is quite obvious that Soledad O’Brien has been spoon-fed and steeped in her bigoted, racial stereotypes. Soledad O’Brien has very little understanding of what she is talking aboout. She appears extremely shallow and quite shrill. For CNN: Just what the hell and why is she employed in her present capacity?

Some Facts about Joel Pollak for Soledad O’Brien:
–He is From Africa
–His wife Julia is from Africa
–Wife mixed race (just like Obama)
–Wife’s Mother appointed by Nelson Mandela to SA Human Rights Commission

It seems as if 65% of the 2005 usage panel accepts my usage.

That being said, I prefer traditional grammar so I appreciate you your pointing this out.

blink on March 8, 2012 at 2:33 PM

“Appreciate”, in this context, is a transitive verb, and thus needs to be followed, logically, by a noun.

I think if you really meant to say you appreciate the person, rather than their act of pointing out, you would need a comma:

I appreciate you, pointing this out.

But that still has grammatical problems.

mr.blacksheep on March 8, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Wow. That was actually chilling. Solidad’s open hostility, ridicule and rudeness toward Joel was astounding. And allowing that D list ‘comedian’ to rant at him as well? I watched with my jaw slowly dropping further and further as Joel’s and Breitbart’s main point was made right in front of our eyes in real time. The media working in lock step with the Obama re-election campaign. I love that he remained calm and rational as she resorted to laughing in his face. He schooled her on race theory to boot.

Not shocked by the cronyism. That’s what Leftists in the Academic world do, and they’re just following their perception of how people gain power… specifically how they think “White People” hold power.

Recapping though…
We have a “Constitutional Law” class that turns out to be a radical Race politics in law class, using Derrick Bell’s summaries of landmark race related cases.

We have one of Obama’s only publicly documented college-era activities show him endorsing a bit of political theater by Bell.

And finally, we see him carry this into his Presidency. He may have used Bell as his prep for election debates, and he appointed someone else from Bell’s inner circle to a high court.

On the Weiner Scale, we’re pretty far from the boner reveal of a BB takedown.

The reason the ACORN tapes were so destructive to ACORN is that Breitbart anticipated the reaction, and countered the spin with contradictory video evidence after the leftists had cornered themselves in settling on a story.

I happen to think that further tapes will be released once the Breitbart-anticipated “narrative” settles in, and the revelations will show the “narrative” to be the lies that comprise much of what the mid-stream media tries to pawn off as fact.

dogsoldier on March 8, 2012 at 3:17 PM

Hmmmm maybe I need to explain that a little. Many surveys of media outlets have found that over 90% of the people working in them are liberals.

That doesn’t necessarily mean there is a conspiracy, but when they all come out with the same talking points (and they frequently do) one knows there is some central moderation and planning.

What then do we have? Socialist/Marxist media and FNC..

Critical race theory” is one label for such an anti-Western notion of justice; its ideas seep into the humanities, including my field, English. Its promulgators, like Derrick Bell, insist that long-held beliefs that underpin our legal system be replaced by a “justice” that takes into account past and current racial discrimination — however subjectively determined it may be. In short, critical race theorists believe that standards of justice should vary from group to group and situation to situation.

Glenn Beck is not a journalist. Furthermore, the genius of Roger Ailes is understanding he will only be successful by providing content that people want to see. Why are CNN and MSNBC too stupid to understand this simple concept?

The popular shows on FNC are of people with opinions who willingly and gladly display those opinions. Most of FNC’s journalism side is filled with the same inexperienced journalist types that exist at the other networks. It just isn’t as obvious because the editorial slant of FNC masks it.

mr.blacksheep on March 8, 2012 at 3:52 PM

Our founding principles are based on the idea of natural law, clearly expressed in such language that “all men are created equal” and “endowed by their Creator with inalienable rights.” The Marxist and critical race theory notions espoused by Obama and by those in positions as intellectual opinion-makers are diametrically opposed to our democratic foundations.

ted c on March 8, 2012 at 3:53 PM

Wow. I watched the entire CNN interview, and if anyone here is commenting and has not watched it, head back up to the top and do so. Watch the entire thing. What you see so clearly from Soledad O’Brien is fear, raw fear. She sees a tipping point coming, a tipping point in which a vast majority of American voters are going to know that they were not told the truth about Barack Obama, that the media did in fact cover up his radical past, and they’re going to be angry, and they’re going to want to know what information was kept from them. Her fear, and her frustration that the false narrative of Barack Obama is spinning away from them, are palpable. She and a couple of others on the panel are throwing out the race card like mad, and it isn’t sticking. Pollak just keeps calling them on their own racism, and O’Brien is terrified that he isn’t cowering, he isn’t afraid, he isn’t apologizing. In the end, Soledad O’Brien realizes she and her ilk have some new, worthy opponents, and this election is going to be different. And she is terrified.

Rational Thought on March 8, 2012 at 3:57 PM

Here is the way it goes:

There is an election… this year 2012. There are going to be candidates that will want to run for the office of the Presidency. This is a really, really important position in that the position holds a lot of power. So… some of us think that making sure that the person (Barack Obama)that is currently in that position or people that would like that position should be vetted properly and thoroughly. There are also some of us that strongly feel that this was NOT done in the election of 2008.

There is a lot of information that for whatever reason one might be able to try to justify… by some in the media and political circles in general that felt the need to …..NOT present….i.e. they hid it, lots of it. Information that might have been useful to some of us that would like to choose our President based off of all or as much of the history attached to that candidate as possible.

We would really appreciate it if some of you would just stop trying to make excuses for media outlets that were conducting information freezes on a candidate that in all appearance seems to have some rather unseemly associates and agenda attached to his character.

The truth…will set you free.

MNHawk on March 8, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Andrew Breitbart, of blessed memory, was nobody’s fool.

If this video is such a nothingburger, as CNN and the trolls here keep insisting, why then did Prof. Ogletree have to hide it (his words) during the 2008 election?

Like Nixon said, it’s not the crime that gets you in trouble, it’s the coverup. The story here is how WGBH and Ogletree kept this away from the public because they thought it was damaging to Obama.

As an aside, I found the exchange about the racial makeup of the crowd listening to Ogletree to be quite telling. It’s appalling that there is a news anchor that would actually say that she can identify the racial makeup of a crowd from the back of their heads. She actually said that. Pollack zinged her pretty good when he pointed out that the event was at the W.E.B. DuBois Center at Harvard so it was not likely to be an all-white audience.

rokemronnie on March 8, 2012 at 4:11 PM

This is the big scandal video? How disappointing and lame.

Sob, have you met our very own Ken in CT? I really think you too would hit it off. Our very own Ken likes to do things with his chicken, while naked, also.

Just trying to help out.

MNHawk on March 8, 2012 at 4:12 PM

I love watching how the MSM is just squirming trying to discuss this subject. They are so irritated that in defending Obama they are being thoroughly exposed for the mouthpieces they are. No matter what they try to say to diminish this story, the more they look guilty of the charge.

pjean on March 8, 2012 at 4:17 PM

You continue to shred your own credibility, failing to see how that’s reducing your chances of changing anyone’s opinion to just about zero. And when someone tries to do you a favor and points that out, you become hostile and insulting, which is tantamount to self-immolation in any reasonable discussion.

Do you think this tendency is fairly commonplace on your “side”? Is it something of which you’re proud? Did it take you a long time to achieve this elevated level of argumentation?

mr.blacksheep on March 8, 2012 at 4:08 PM

That’s some solid wanking right there. All the big words and passive agressiveness.

You were doing me a favor? Thank you so very much. I will be sure to send you a note in the mail.

You thought this was a reasonable discussion? You came to the wrong website. Have been in these comment sections before?

“side”?

Also, you are supposed to put punctuation inside the quotation marks and you should never start a sentence with “and.”

Did it actually have an upside-down cross on it, or was he just eating it upside-down? And is this the same explosive falafel video PBS aired in 2007, or a different, second falafel video?

Very cleverly defended! I must say, you got me there! Wow, who saw that coming?

You certainly explained yourself very well, although probably not in the way you had intended.

Does it bother you that your childishness and buffoonery is on display for thousands to see, and that the record is pretty much permanent?

On second thought, maybe Stingray would be more your type. You seem to share common hobbies.

Heh, all the self abuse now on display and the central premise remains. If your President could just man up, and embrace his past, none of this nonsense would be necessary. Not the Breitbart theatrics, and not your public choking of your collective chickens.

If this story doesn’t matter, how come you and yours keep coming back over here to spin, spin, spin?

That’s a rhetorical question, of course. You see the tipping point coming, and you — like Soledad O’Brien — are terrified.

Rational Thought on March 8, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Vetting of the legacy media and Obama is just getting started, and already a lot of people are jumpy.

Soledad and Jay need to switch to decaf.

Christien on March 8, 2012 at 4:31 PM

Yup. The two of them were just twitchin’ up there, absolutely freaked out. So they throw the race card over and over and…nothing! Nada! Zip! Zilch! Pollak just turns it right back on them over and over again, fearlessly. It is really amazing to watch how utter fearlessness strikes such…fear! in the dark heart of a liberal propagandist.

Rational Thought on March 8, 2012 at 4:36 PM

+100. You just saw the beginning of the end. She was pretty much out of control and so was the “interview”. They are going to play this one out slowly and painfully. It’s only going to get bad for the LSM and if O’Brien is any indication it’s going to be fun to watch.

AB left a wonderful legacy with some very good and smart people to keep up the fight.

We have to be prepared though. They are going to get meaner, nastier and possibly more violent, just like cornered animals.

sob0728 on March 8, 2012 at 4:32 PM

So you admit to your behavior being childish buffoonery. At least we can agree on that, although those weren’t names I called you, they were just descriptions of your behavior that I think are unlikely to be particularly contentious.

Have you thought of maybe working to expand your vocabulary? “Douche” is so hackneyed and over-used, and doesn’t generally convey much wit or intelligence on the part of the person who uses it.

You might find a dictionary to be a good investment. If you ask nicely, maybe your Mom will buy you one. I would guess she’s proud of you, though! All grown up and using words like “douche”. Bet she’s not sorry she sent you to that fancy school on the short bus.

53% identify as moderates. Is that not true? Do I need to provide the link again?

sob0728 on March 8, 2012 at 4:04 PM

Did you provide the link the first time? I can’t remember.

But your statement “53% identify as moderates” is rather nebulous, because it doesn’t say which political party they identify with.

IIRC, Pollak and Breitbart grew up next door to each other. Joel showed remarkable composure in the face of the race card. I bet his wife Julia got a chuckle out of their arrogant ignorance, too.

Again, why are they so clearly rattled over this “nothingburger?”
