Video: CNN beclowns itself painting Breitbart editor-in-chief as racist

posted at 10:25 am on March 8, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Soledad O’Brien and her CNN panel manage to stumble into Contessa Brewer territory in this appearance by attempting to paint Breitbart.com editor-in-chief Joel Pollak as a racist for making a point about Barack Obama’s support for a proponent of “critical race theory” during his days at Harvard Law School. Joel ends up in an argument with a woefully unprepared O’Brien on the theory itself, but the actual facepalm moment goes to one of her panelists, who asks Joel why he’s so afraid of black people:

For CNN and the uninformed — but I repeat myself — here’s Joel’s lovely wife Julia from Joel’s Congressional campaign in 2010:

The only intelligent comment from the panel comes from Amy Holmes, who asked why the media didn’t cover this in 2008, and why the MSM didn’t exhibit any curiosity at all about Obama’s days in college and his activism there. Holmes scolds the media for acting as gatekeepers in the service of protecting Obama, which is of course the Breitbart point in releasing these videos now. Of course, that’s probably because Amy Holmes is afraid of black people, or something.

Frankly, it’s clear that no one at CNN does critical thinking, on race theory or anything else. The point of Andrew’s final project isn’t so much to make Obama’s early radical ties clear; it’s to point out how the media tried to keep them quiet. This uninformed attack from O’Brien and most of the CNN panel is a great demonstration of the very point that Andrew wanted to make with these videos. All they needed to say — and what Holmes tried to say at one point — is that plenty of people toy with radicalism in college, but drop those passions when they get into the real world, and that college activism isn’t terribly germane twenty years later with a term as President already in place. They fell into the trap set by Andrew and Joel, and somewhere Andrew is enjoying a mighty laugh over it.

By the way, I got a chance to see Joel and Julia this week at the memorial service for Andrew Breitbart, and meet their beautiful new daughter Maya. I’m quite sure that Julia also got a big laugh out of this segment, and I’m equally sure she won’t be the only one who does.

bloggless on March 8, 2012 at 10:35 AM

Saw this segment this morning. The point is made by Amy Homes that the media should not be deciding for the American people what is and is not news. Team O’Brien never does get the point. Instead they default to the race card and simply continue to debate what is and is not news. Team Race Card should have been asked why they are afraid to let go of controlling what is and is not news as it pertains to Obama.

Pollack was unflappable and effective.

Asking anyone, as a counter point to a reasonably well thought out premise, if they are afraid of black people is such a cop-out it is mind-boggling. Don’t address the point made…just start calling names and making unfounded assertions. In the immortal words of Edward R. Murrow in a different age of journalism…”Have you no shame?”

interesting.

“I’ve got videos, by the way, and in this election we’re going to vet him. I’ve got videos. This election we’re going to vet him. From his college days, to show you why racial division and class warfare are central to what ‘hope and change’ was sold in 2008. The videos are going to come out. The narrative is going to come out: that Barack Obama met a bunch of silver pony-tails back in the 1980s, like Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn who said “one day, we’re going to have the presidency.’”

let’s face it, last night’s hug-gate was a trainwreck and no amount of spin will change that. buzzfeed scooping the breitbart kids was just insult added to self-inflicted injury.

Leftists have become very lazy people in the last 20 years because they controlled the major media outlets and they always assumed their lazy retorts were effective. Americans are on to the racialists game, and they are not impressed by it. This entire election cycle we will see more and more of the same because leftists have no alternative playbook, and more and more Americans will become disgusted by the display.

I have to admit I was disappointed in the tape release yesterday, but now I think I see what they are doing.Bit by bit they are revealing what the media should have done in 2008. But, a legit African-American. I’m so confused.

a capella on March 8, 2012 at 11:00 AM

Who was Derrick Bell?

“Bell was credited with developing “critical race theory,” which suggested that the U.S. legal system was inherently biased against African Americans and other minorities because it was built on an ingrained white point of view. He argued in his many books and lectures that the life experiences of black people and other minorities should be considered in hiring decisions and in applying the law.

Bell maintained that the standards for promotion and tenure at law schools – and Harvard, in particular – were inherently discriminatory and excluded a broad group of minorities. By hiring only graduates of top-tier law schools who had clerked at the Supreme Court, he argued, academia was populated by a uniform a group of standard-issue professors, most of them white men.”

And why are we not surprised that he was a Farrakhan supporter?

“Some scholars, both black and white, challenged Bell’s ideas, as well as his strong support of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Nonetheless, Bell remained one of the country’s most outspoken public intellectuals until his death.”

Author James Traub voiced this opinion in his 1993 piece on the professor:

“That’s Derek Bell’s bottom line: if it comforts whites, it’s bad; if it comforts blacks–i.e., Farrakhan–it’s good. Bell, along with Farrakhan and so many others, offers victimization as a consolation.”

A few of Professor Bell’s more notable quotes (all of them from his 1992 book Faces at the Bottom of the Well) on the subject of race include the following:

“Despite undeniable progress for many, no African Americans are insulated from incidents of racial discrimination. Our careers, even our lives, are threatened because of our color.”

“[T]he racism that made slavery feasible is far from dead . . . and the civil rights gains, so hard won, are being steadily eroded.”

“… few whites are ready to actively promote civil rights for blacks.”

“[D]iscrimination in the workplace is as vicious (if less obvious) than it was when employers posted signs ‘no negras need apply.’”

“We rise and fall less as a result of our efforts than in response to the needs of a white society that condemns all blacks to quasi citizenship as surely as it segregated our parents.”

“Slavery is, as an example of what white America has done, a constant reminder of what white America might do.”

“Tolerated in good times, despised when things go wrong, as a people we [blacks] are scapegoated and sacrificed as distraction or catalyst for compromise to facilitate resolution of political differences or relieve economic adversity.”

“Black people will never gain full equality in this country. Even those Herculean efforts we hail as successful will produce no more than ‘temporary peaks of progress,’ short lived victories that slide into irrelevance as racial patterns adapt in ways that maintain white dominance”—in the realization that “white self-interest will prevail over [B]lack rights.”

That’s who Obama was rallying for in his speech. That’s for whose words and work he wanted the crowd to open their hearts and minds…a man, who believed that racism was permanent and that blacks and whites could never live in harmony and equality.

very! except that much has been written about obama’s past (e.g.) and you’d think that after a term as president, people would care more about his accomplishments in office, whatever they may be, than him embracing one of his harvard professors.

also, too, the video was not hidden – it was available the whole time on pbs – made possible by my tax dollars. you just didn’t care to look, and even if you did, people would have ignored it like they ignored the rev. wright nonsense.

“What are you afraid of”…Jay Thomas, Soledad O’brien and CNN.

He is RACIST. There is nothing incriminating about this video.

Why do you hate Jews?

tdpwells on March 8, 2012 at 10:59 AM

I’m a democrat. Most Jews vote for the democrats. Republicans need to find out why Jews despise them.

Obama will win Majority of Jewish vote this year as well

liberal4life on March 8, 2012 at 11:02 AM

So I keep wondering why Hillary and the Democrat candidates in 2008 did not a) get the video, b) push that Obama is a anti-american radical.

I bet Hillary is wondering the same thing. But then she realizes that the Secretary of State job was the payoff…

Maybe she stayed away from the radical angle because she didn’t want her radical skeletons brought out for everyone to see. She has just as much to hide as The One does.
