Video: Obama speaks at Harvard protest in 1990

posted at 8:20 pm on March 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

A snippet to whet your appetite for the big reveal on “Hannity” tonight by Breitbart.com team members Joel Pollak and Ben Shapiro. (Steve Bannon promised last week that they’d start rolling out what they have on Obama within 7-10 days and was true to his word.) Writes Pollak of this clip, released earlier this afternoon by BuzzFeed:

Earlier today, Buzzfeed’s Ben Smith announced on Twitter that video researcher Andrew Kaczynski had released “the mysterious Harvard/Obama/race video that the Breitbart folks have been talking about.”

The video, which Kaczynski says was “licensed from a Boston television station,” shows a young Barack Obama leading a protest at Harvard Law School on behalf of Prof. Derrick Bell, a radical academic tied to Jeremiah Wright–about whom we will be releasing significant information in the coming hours.

However, the video has been selectively edited–either by the Boston television station or by Buzzfeed itself. Over the course of the day, Breitbart.com will be releasing additional footage that has been hidden by Obama’s allies in the mainstream media and academia.

Smith initially tweeted that Kaczysnki “may” have found the long-promised Breitbart vid but then others corrected him and he retweeted the corrections. The BuzzFeed footage actually isn’t even new: After they posted it this morning, Frontline put up a post of its own reminding everyone that it first aired in PBS’s documentary “The Choice 2008.” You’ll find the clip of that below; the Obama speech comes at 6:30. According to Frontline:

While BuzzFeed did not publish all of the available footage of the event — a manager here noted that they were paying for each second of footage — they did post the entirety of what was available of Obama’s speech. While other cameras could have shot additional material from the event, no other footage of the event exists at WGBH.

And while there does appear to be editing in the footage available, that was almost certainly done in 1990. The Ten O’Clock News practice was to store completed segments as aired along with any relevant additional footage that might be useful in the future.

Some commenters in Headlines wondered whether BuzzFeed might have excised the more inflammatory parts of Obama’s speech. If you believe the above, they didn’t. And even if they had the footage, what would be gained by editing it out when they have every reason to believe the Breitbart team has it and is ready to unveil it? It’s going to come out anyway, in one of the biggest conservative forums in American media; under those circumstances, if you’re a lefty looking to help Obama on this, your best move is simply to release what you’ve got before the “Big” sites and Hannity do and spin it as hard as you can to frame the debate to O’s advantage. As it is, the brief BuzzFeed clip inadvertently operates as a teaser trailer for Pollak’s and Shapiro’s appearance tonight: Now I’m really interested to see what else they might have. And if they do end up producing something interesting, BuzzFeed and the rest of the media will be left to explain why they didn’t discover it first. Which is to say, I don’t see how BF benefits from posting a redacted clip except for the brief blip of traffic they’re getting by piggybacking on the “Big” sites’ big reveal. They must have published what they have, and this is it.

Anyway. Here’s your “Hannity” thread plus some background on the Harvard protest from Jake Tapper.

Watch Obama Speaks at Harvard Law in ’90 on PBS. See more from FRONTLINE.

Barack Obama is not the target. The media are the target. The point of this effort is to show the public how very little we were actually told about Obama in 2008. So we will not trust anything they tell us anymore.

To our trolls: does it not bother you that you have never seen this tape before today, but you know who Rick Santorum’s wife dated before she met him? That there were hundreds of reporters going through the trash in Wasilla in September of 2008, but not one bothered to find this tape?

Do you really believe you know who Barack Obama is? Why?

rockmom on March 7, 2012 at 9:56 PM

One effect this will have is to further erode faith in the MSM.

Rancher on March 7, 2012 at 9:56 PM

Obama didn’t stutter and do his ahhh ummm thing off teleprompter because he was free to speak his true feelings.

Wigglesworth on March 7, 2012 at 9:57 PM

AB has a slew of vids, and there is no way you would release the best early because everything after would pale in comparison. This is a nice teaser just to get the leftizards running around in circles, then the meaty stuff will appear.

Bishop on March 7, 2012 at 9:34 PM

I didn’t hear the Breitbart folks say that. Have they said there is more? I really think they’re putting what they have out there in the hopes that more will flow into them as Obama is far less “untouchable” this time around. They are trying to establish a “vet the president” narrative, so others will have to courage to bring forward what they know/have, and so voters will start to say, “Yeah, tell us what you know about this guy.” I don’t think Breitbart has much more. They want to establish that the media have been complicit in a “cover up” of the “real” Barack Obama in order to blunt the media’s effect on the 2012 election. It’s a good strategy, and it will have some effect. We only have to get to 51%.

Mccain didn’t want to expose that.

the_nile on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

THAT was wone of the two big reasons why McCain lost. He chose to lose the election and imperil America to massage his ego and sense of Senatorial dignity. My fear is that Romney may, as well, not have the stomach to bring it. Since he’ll probably be the nominee, I hope he picks a brave, tenacious running mate.

Red State State of Mind on March 7, 2012 at 9:58 PM

This time around, Obama has a record. This time, he has to answer the question, “If the Economy Is Improving….”. This time, people will have known what life under Obama is like.

Resist We Much on March 7, 2012 at 9:53 PM

Which is why this kind of stuff doesn’t matter much. That’s why the idiot professor wasn’t worried about people finding this now.

The problem for them is that his record sucks beyond our wildest dreams. People generally like Obama as a person. Attacking him on that front won’t work.

People generally hate is policies/actions. We should focus our attacks on him toward that front. God knows there is plenty there. It’s the same reason the birther crap hasn’t stuck & won’t.

The idea that there is inherent value ion diversity?

urban elitist on March 7, 2012 at 9:51 PM

The best definition I’ve ever heard of “diversity” is a bridge made up of steel beams, string, balsa wood, and LEGOs. If you’re lucky, the strong parts hold up the rest, and if you’re not, everything falls down.

This isn’t even “radical.” A fight over tenure at an elite university? The idea that elite institutions might have inherent prejudices after 300 years of thinking themselves perfect? The idea that there is inherent value ion diversity?

Liberal, yes. Radical, no freaking way.

urban elitist on March 7, 2012 at 9:51 PM

The issue is not the diversity protest. The issue is Obama’s relationship with Derrick Bell. Bell was a radical.

Obama told the protestors to “Open up their hearts and minds to Professor Bell.”

Sorry, but I don’t open up my heart or mind to racists – black or white, anti-semites, etc.

If the tape and relationship was so innocuous, then why did Ogletree actively work to suppress it?

“We hid this throughout the 2008 campaign. I don’t care if they find it now.” – Professor Charles Ogletree, Harvard Law School

Someone should remind Hannity of the story The Boy Who Cried Ayers.

Not everything is the worst outrageous outrage in the history of outrages. This was a law student hugging Harvard’s only tenured black Professor, and not, by the transitive property, hugging every policy position that Professor ever held.

What a stupid nothing.

I can assure you, my business has been affected greatly. Construction has suffered horribly here. Just about all of my work is doing service because no one wants/can afford to expand. @Rockmom,

You make a good point. But I think too many Americans still don’t care about media bias. The mere term “media bias” turns most of their brains off.

Some of my moderate friends have increased their interest, or have at least started to engage in discussions. But their perception is now that “both sides” are guilty of it, and both sides yell too much. They lump the Tea Party with OWS, they pair Fox News with MSNBC.

The month before the election I created several videos trying to get the word out. Nobody cared.

It has nothing to do with the GOP. If you had the slightest understanding of AB, you would know that, too. He was not a political animal. He was sooooo over the whole 2012 election thing. He didn’t care who the GOP nominated. The battlefield was much larger to him than just Washington and the war would have to be fought much longer than one election cycle.

The idea that you think that this has anything to do with what is going on in the clown car crack-up is illustrative of how little you knew about AB, his work, or why those associated with him will fight on.

“Had that portion of the decline in the labor force participation rate since 2007 that is attributable to neither the aging of the baby boomers nor the downturn in the business cycle (on the basis of the experience in previous downturns) not occurred, the unemployment rate in the fourth quarter of 2011 would have been about 1¼ percentage points higher than the actual rate of 8.7 percent.”

As a politician he has been nothing but a feckless centrist since his days in the IL Senate. He votes present, he never takes controversial positions and he folds over to “compromise” with the right at every opportunity in the name of political expediency. That’s who Barack Obama is.

libfreeordie on March 7, 2012 at 10:19 PM

That’s WHAT Barack Obama is, in your opinion, and only what he has been for about the last 10 years. Do you know WHO he is? Do you care?

rockmom on March 7, 2012 at 10:25 PM

How odd that brilliant man who grew up under segregation might have something to say that makes you uncomfortable. Academia should make people uncomfortable.

urban elitist on March 7, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Well, that’s an interesting way of excusing bad behaviour.

He was a strong supporter and close friend of Louis Farrakhan. You know, the guy, who on multiple occasions said:

“HITLER WAS A VERY GREAT MAN.”

As someone, whose family suffered in the Holocaust, I am more than a little “uncomfortable” with anti-Semitism and bigotry.

I know, I know! Move on, already. It was like 70 years ago! Get over, already.

Gotcha.

A lot of you seem to be falling into the same trap that is being laid for the left and the media.

“Nothing to see here…”

“No big deal…”

“THIS is all they have?”

“What’s the big deal?”

Have you forgotten how Andrew Breitbart and his team operate? They release material that is questionable but easily dismissed. After the dismissals and explanations come out, AB releases more material that makes the dismissals and explanations look like lies and cover-ups. Then he repeats the process.

At CPAC he said “videos”, not “video”.

This is the beginning, not the end of a process. Have patience.

Not about Obama, but about media’s willful role in covering it up. Just look at Alinsky tape. #spacetraders

That so many of you can’t see what the real objective is here shows that you haven’t been paying attention.

It says a lot about the state of academia that morons like this are regarded by anyone as “brilliant”. Then again, it’s not like neanderthals like you are in a position to make any kinds of assessments on matters of intelligence.

rockmom on March 7, 2012 at 10:05 PM

I’m sure I saw it, since I remember watching that Frontline episode, but it made exactly as much impression then as it does now – which is to say, none.

So, a guy who’s admitted to hanging with the radicals as a student, praises the cool radical prof and opposes the evil administration. And it even gets a passing reference on a news program BEFORE the election in 2008, and it’s such a nothing story that even Glenn Beck didn’t bother to pick up on it.

This one was a swing and a miss.

Has everyone forgotten Breitbart’s MO already?

The man was brilliant in his manipulation of the liberal masses and the media.

He’d start out with a small something, which on its own seemed like a big nothingburger.

People would talk about it, dismiss it as “not that much”, “why is everyone getting worked up about this?”, etc.

He’d get them on the record, and then he would release another little something that caught them in their lie.

And they would excuse it, and say “Well, at least we didn’t do X,Y,Z.”

Then he would release another tape showing them doing X,Y, and Z.

And they’d get all righteously indignant, saying everything was taken out of context, and it was unique to those people/places that were shown, but the mainstream people/places weren’t doing those kinds of things.

And then Breitbart would release ANOTHER tape showing the mainstream people/places doing exactly those kinds of things.

He ALWAYS got them to expose themselves for who they really were.

And he was MAGNIFICENT in the way that he did it.

I know about as much WHO Obama is as I do about any politician in the last 25 years (except for Bill Clinton whose WHO was pretty messy and out there). The WHO on Obama is a lot better than the WHAT of Obama. The WHO includes being a faithful husband, not having a flock of ex girlfriends or people coming out the woodwork and being a father to two beautiful girls. Obama the WHO is a hell of a lot better than Obama the What. As you’ve so elegantly distinguished.

Seriously, what is controversial about Derrick Bell. Can you please point to something specific. Like, I guess there was a time when saying things like, “American case law reveals a pro-white bias” but that was like 1985. And also? The evidence supports such conclusions. I just don’t understand what you all are on about.

libfreeordie on March 7, 2012 at 10:38 PM

Good grief, Andrea Mitchell (NBC!) is carrying water for Obama, based on this clip because 1) Bell was a distinguished professor (Obviously, Mitchell doesn’t know his history,) and 2) Obama is using his fabulous rhetorical style to address the two biggest issues of today: race and gender inequity.

Mitchell is a tool of the first order.

onlineanalyst on March 7, 2012 at 10:38 PM

TNR had a fascinating article about Bell in 93.

http://www.tnr.com/article/politics/whom-the-bell-tolls

It is hard to excerpt any part of it…it is a portrait of a man who views the legal system as white, and inherently unable to judge blacks…and fantasized about blacks going somewhere else.

These are familiar people…the same people who believe that Clarence Thomas is an uncle tom, in the house on the plantation…etc.

(if you go to the Frontline pbs vid and watch it, one of black women has a special dislike of conservatives…you know the kind that would never associate with ‘those people’)

So Obama is no Clarence Thomas…and Bell harbored lots of animus against whites, even tho other blacks were making their way thru Havard law.

That’s Derek Bell’s bottom line: if it comforts whites, it’s bad; if it comforts blacks–i.e., Farrakhan–it’s good. Bell, along with Farrakhan and so many others, offers victimization as a consolation. The law won’t help; politics won’t help; even the truth, as Bell argues in a parable called “Racism’s Secret Bonding,” won’t help. Bell says he hopes for “a resurrection based on the realization of righteous futility.” But despair leads to alienation and sullen withdrawal, not to renewal.

Do you really believe you know who Barack Obama is? Why?

slickwillie2001 on March 7, 2012 at 10:44 PM

Looking at the timeline, AB shot BIG in the foot at CPAC.

He got the crowd riled up then went on to announce a release date.

Any video owned by a singular person knows they didn’t hand it over.

Any video known by a group of people will also know who is in possession. They confirm it hasn’t been released.

This only leaves public domain material, which then gives people like Ben Smith’s crew a beat-the-clock game to play.

So what does someone in that position do? Release any and all video that fits the description. Throw enough shit on the wall and hope it sticks.

If this was it, then Smith got the best of BIG on this one because AB had some bigger game in mind, but sadly, it ain’t going down like that.

“It’s time to regroup and hope for a bad jobs number on Friday!”

Unfortunately, the preliminary numbers out this week (for the private sector) were very strong and that’s always a precursor to the overall numbers released on Friday. A good jobs report this week (following the good one last month) is pretty good evidence of a recovery. A rise in Consumer Confidence will follow and Obama will be routing Romney in the polls.

As I said, Mitt Romney’s church will be relevant even though it was decades ago. Obama’s associations, despite being much closer in time, are irrelevant.

I am not part of the fringe. I do not believe in conspiracy theories. I happen to know many of the people involved, the environment, or know people who do, etc. President Obama and I share have similar educational backgrounds and share an alma mater.
