Video: Obama speaks at Harvard protest in 1990

posted at 8:20 pm on March 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

A snippet to whet your appetite for the big reveal on “Hannity” tonight by Breitbart.com team members Joel Pollak and Ben Shapiro. (Steve Bannon promised last week that they’d start rolling out what they have on Obama within 7-10 days and was true to his word.) Writes Pollak of this clip, released earlier this afternoon by BuzzFeed:

Earlier today, Buzzfeed’s Ben Smith announced on Twitter that video researcher Andrew Kaczynski had released “the mysterious Harvard/Obama/race video that the Breitbart folks have been talking about.”

The video, which Kaczynski says was “licensed from a Boston television station,” shows a young Barack Obama leading a protest at Harvard Law School on behalf of Prof. Derrick Bell, a radical academic tied to Jeremiah Wright–about whom we will be releasing significant information in the coming hours.

However, the video has been selectively edited–either by the Boston television station or by Buzzfeed itself. Over the course of the day, Breitbart.com will be releasing additional footage that has been hidden by Obama’s allies in the mainstream media and academia.

Smith initially tweeted that Kaczysnki “may” have found the long-promised Breitbart vid but then others corrected him and he retweeted the corrections. The BuzzFeed footage actually isn’t even new: After they posted it this morning, Frontline put up a post of its own reminding everyone that it first aired in PBS’s documentary “The Choice 2008.” You’ll find the clip of that below; the Obama speech comes at 6:30. According to Frontline:

While BuzzFeed did not publish all of the available footage of the event — a manager here noted that they were paying for each second of footage — they did post the entirety of what was available of Obama’s speech. While other cameras could have shot additional material from the event, no other footage of the event exists at WGBH.

And while there does appear to be editing in the footage available, that was almost certainly done in 1990. The Ten O’Clock News practice was to store completed segments as aired along with any relevant additional footage that might be useful in the future.

Some commenters in Headlines wondered whether BuzzFeed might have excised the more inflammatory parts of Obama’s speech. If you believe the above, they didn’t. And even if they had the footage, what would be gained by editing it out when they have every reason to believe the Breitbart team has it and is ready to unveil it? It’s going to come out anyway, in one of the biggest conservative forums in American media; under those circumstances, if you’re a lefty looking to help Obama on this, your best move is simply to release what you’ve got before the “Big” sites and Hannity do and spin it as hard as you can to frame the debate to O’s advantage. As it is, the brief BuzzFeed clip inadvertently operates as a teaser trailer for Pollak’s and Shapiro’s appearance tonight: Now I’m really interested to see what else they might have. And if they do end up producing something interesting, BuzzFeed and the rest of the media will be left to explain why they didn’t discover it first. Which is to say, I don’t see how BF benefits from posting a redacted clip except for the brief blip of traffic they’re getting by piggybacking on the “Big” sites’ big reveal. They must have published what they have, and this is it.

Anyway. Here’s your “Hannity” thread plus some background on the Harvard protest from Jake Tapper.

Bell eventually resigned from Harvard in 1992, and continued to stir controversy. He wrote a short story, “The Space Traders,” in which he imagined that Americans would sell blacks to aliens in exchange for gold to repay the national debt. He also implied that Jews would help blacks only out of a sense of self-preservation, turning Holocaust victim and diarist Anne Frank into “the symbol of Jewish hypocrisy.”

The Holy Grail should be getting your hands on the LA TIMES video of Barry and Rashid Kahledi.

Major_Skidmark on March 7, 2012 at 8:38 PM

Agreed.

For LAT to bury it, Barry must let the “Free Palestine” flag wave high and mighty.

IMO, they have the Alinsky theater tape. The producer/director’s letter about how the video is not in Chicago and even the poster wasn’t to be released just feels like an AB tactic of letting people hang themselves. Her email didn’t read like a response to the posting, but something they sought before they posted the first article.

Besides, if it’s not in Chicago, the only other places are NY or L.A. My money is on Angeles, which is how AB found out in the first place.

budfox on March 7, 2012 at 9:01 PM

I really don’t think these tapes are going to do much other than remind Obama’s radical base of the reasons why they loved him in 2008.

So this must be the strategy right?

Help shore up Obama’s base … while simultaneously DEPRESSING the GOP base by giving them a plastic-fantastic squish nominee with his own Socialist HealthCare system named after him?

Uhm … is this really the path to victory? LOL!

HondaV65 on March 7, 2012 at 9:01 PM

Seriously though, I hope this narrative builds over the next few months and we actually HEAR Obama saying some things like Wright and Ayres would. It won’t sway the Dem base, but maybe enough fence sitters.

I see what they’re doing here. By releasing this in advance of Hannity’s recording many news organizations will simply pick up the buzzfeed video and say, see folks, nothing to do here and never show their viewers the longer version, which might be more controversial.

Reminds me of Michelle’s “first time I’m proud of my country” comment. After they rerecorded her saying “first time I’m REALLY proud of my country” that’s the clip that the MSM media played and the only version a lot of people heard.

sydneyjane on March 7, 2012 at 9:04 PM

omg he embraced bell!

this is it. it’s over now.

sesquipedalian on March 7, 2012 at 9:04 PM

I did some follow-up in the BuzzFeed story this morning, which opened like this:

It was perhaps Barack Obama’s most intense immersion in the charged campus racial politics of the late 1980s and early 1990s: As President of the Harvard Law Review in the spring of his final year there, 1991, he aligned himself with Professor Derrick Bell’s dramatic protest for diversity on the faculty of Harvard Law School.

Many of the subsequent re-treads stand as a prime example of the “cut and paste school of journalism” – Notice that even Tapper repeats the wrong date.

I easily located a NYT article from April 26, 1990.
Two of the references I found about Prof. Bell had the correct year.

And this:

Obama’s election in February 1990 as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review was widely reported and followed by several long, detailed profiles.

(Frontline had not yet published their rebuttal, with the correct date, but their original story didn’t make it to the front page of my Google list and I didn’t see it.)

A couple of points about the Times piece, which is an interesting look into the history of affirmative action, especially the less-than-totally-PC viewpoint of the school at the time: first, the article doesn’t mention Barack Obama at all, so I guess he didn’t make a big impression on the reporters back then; I would have thought an appearance by the first black President of the Law Review* would have gotten their attention.

Second, Bell was pushing hard at Harvard, despite their efforts to increase the number of minorities on the faculty, but the Law School baulked at doing an end run around their hiring policies: “Mr. Bell said he was particularly disappointed that Harvard had not acted to give tenure to Regina Austin, a black scholar tenured at the University of Pennsylvania law school who is a visiting professor at Harvard this year. Harvard’s usual policy is not to hire visiting professors until they have returned to their own schools.”

As a side note, in the video Obama says of Bell’s accomplishments (see this for instance), that “he hasn’t done it by his good looks and easy charm, although he has both in ample measure”.

Talk about déjà vu all over again!

AesopFan on March 7, 2012 at 9:04 PM

Statement from the LA TIMES as to why the will not release the tape…

“The Los Angeles Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided to us by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not release it,” said the newspaper’s editor, Russ Stanton. “The Times keeps its promises to sources.”

Major_Skidmark on March 7, 2012 at 9:05 PM

galtani on March 7, 2012 at 9:05 PM

Conservatives complaining this is a big ‘noting’ need to remember: Conservatives would ALREADY KNOW and be aware how radical Obama is.

Those aren’t the people being targeted by this roll out of the videos of Obama’s radical past.

No, the people being targeted are the ones who WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR PUTTING OBAMA IN THE WHITE HOUSE by pushing him over the 50% mark in 2008.

That’s right! INDEPENDENTS.

Independents are the target of this, not Conservatives or Democrats. Conservatives already know and so do most Democrats.

By releasing the videos this way and FORCING the MSM to cover it, think about what segment of the population is put in ‘play’ here:

MODERATES WHO WATCH THE MSM.

Correctomundo!!!!

In other words, people who the MSM would NEVER dream of showing this stuff to on their own. So Breitbart is [heh heh] ‘helping’ them get the story out.

As the MSM tries to spin [only one video! nothing to see here! He's not really radical!] they are going to end up getting PUBLICLY and REPEATEDLY tripped up by their own lies, just like they were in the ACORN videos.

Release one video, get their lies on the record, then release 2nd video; more lies, more spin, 3rd even more damaging video………..come on now, Breitbart has done this before. They know what they are doing.

Gonna be fun to watch.

sesquipedalian on March 7, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Hmmmm…

In a 2008 Harvard law paper, “Conspiracy Theories,” Sunstein and co-author Adrian Vermeule, a Harvard law professor, ask, “What can government do about conspiracy theories?”

“We can readily imagine a series of possible responses. (1) Government might ban conspiracy theorizing. (2) Government might impose some kind of tax, financial or otherwise, on those who disseminate such theories.”

Continued Sunstein: “We suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies (acting either virtually or in real space, and either openly or anonymously) will undermine the crippled epistemology of believers by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity.”

Sunstein said government agents “might enter chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups and attempt to undermine percolating conspiracy theories by raising doubts about their factual premises, causal logic or implications for political action.”

Sunstein defined a conspiracy theory as “an effort to explain some event or practice by reference to the machinations of powerful people, who have also managed to conceal their role.”

At any rate, this Bell guy just helps connect more dots into Obama’s true beliefs and radical idea’s.

carbon_footprint on March 7, 2012 at 9:17 PM

A few of Professor Bell’s more notable quotes (all of them from his 1992 book Faces at the Bottom of the Well) on the subject of race include the following:

“Despite undeniable progress for many, no African Americans are insulated from incidents of racial discrimination. Our careers, even our lives, are threatened because of our color.”

“[T]he racism that made slavery feasible is far from dead . . . and the civil rights gains, so hard won, are being steadily eroded.”

“… few whites are ready to actively promote civil rights for blacks.”

“[D]iscrimination in the workplace is as vicious (if less obvious) than it was when employers posted signs ‘no negras need apply.’”

“We rise and fall less as a result of our efforts than in response to the needs of a white society that condemns all blacks to quasi citizenship as surely as it segregated our parents.”

“Slavery is, as an example of what white America has done, a constant reminder of what white America might do.”

“Tolerated in good times, despised when things go wrong, as a people we [blacks] are scapegoated and sacrificed as distraction or catalyst for compromise to facilitate resolution of political differences or relieve economic adversity.”

“Black people will never gain full equality in this country. Even those Herculean efforts we hail as successful will produce no more than ‘temporary peaks of progress,’ short lived victories that slide into irrelevance as racial patterns adapt in ways that maintain white dominance”—in the realization that “white self-interest will prevail over [B]lack rights.”

That’s who Obama was rallying for in this speech!

Resist We Much on March 7, 2012 at 8:26 PM

As a black american, a lot of what he said he has some resonance with me and I know a lot of other black people who would nod in agreement with a lot of these “outrageous” quotes. He articulated a lot of thoughts that a lot of people in the black community share. In particular, the last quote rings especially true. Given the negative view most people in America have of black people (don’t believe just do a simple search of “why do black people” and then look at the suggested topics on google) there is a feeling that Black’s fate is at a fragile balance and dependent on what the white majority political feelings are at a given time. To progressive white credit, during the 50′s and 60′s, civil rights legislation would of never passed. However, the flip side, given the lack of political clout blacks have on their own relative to the white majority, if the tide turn in society in general against blacks, then there will not be much blacks can do to combat it. Minorities, not just blacks, only have an illusion of power as granted by the majority.

So in short, the only people this will probably matter to is republicans maybe right leaning moderates. Progressives, liberals, and other groups will not care. Basically, nothing will change.

There is no easy silver bullet like a Kenyan birth certificate nor a tape showing Barry repeatedly stabbing a while policeman while yelling Allahu Akbar. To get Barry out, the GOP needs to unite and do the hard work of campaigning and defeating him the old fashion way. Vote by vote. It will not be easy, especially given the present state of disarray in the party. But it must be done.

Derrick Bell’s Afrolantica Legacies

The mythic island of Afrolantica is resurfacing equadistant from the U.S. and Africa. It’s previous appearance prompted African Americans and members of the African Diaspora to pack up their lives and attempt to establish a free society on the island oasis only hospital to black people. Instead, they received a list of 7 principles with which to confront oppression and empower themselves while the island returned to the ocean.

As the nation and the world prepare for its return, several parties prepare for critical discussions about race and what it will mean for black people to leave N. America for good over inequality. Among them is a speech by the President of the United States, Bill Clinton, apologizing for racism and the author of the speech, Derrick Bell, and his alien/sorceress colleague Geneva Crenshaw, outlining illustrations of the 7 principles to light the way.

[snip]

Unfortunately, he is less successful in discussing antisemitism and the conflict between some Jewish people and some African Americans. His essay/story “Shadowboxing” dispenses with any pretense of science fiction or even much fiction in order to posit a conversation between Bell and a fictional Jewish colleague who Bell feels is unreasonable and slightly racist. Hirsch, the colleague, comes across as a hyper-sensitive, self-obsorbed, colleague invested not so much oppression olympics as oppression eclipse in which only Jewish people suffer. In other words his character is an offensive stereotype. Worse the way that fiction Bell interacts with him about race and ethnicity exempts antisemitism while holding Jewish people accountable for racism. I’m unclear what is worse in this chapter, the insistence that Jewish people overreact to antisemitism to the erasure of other forms of oppression by a character who is guilty of the exact same thing, or the fact that important events in which Jewish boycotts of black leaders and companies led to their demise are eclipsed by the profoundly negative narrative of this chapter. It took me days to push through this chapter and its presence in the collection ensured that I could not recommend this book or gift it to anyone else.”

hillsoftx on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

Come on people. You really don’t get it? This is showing the media for the biased organization they are. The best part, it’s just the first drip.

Remember, Breitbart said videoS in his C-PAC speech.

Patience, my friends, patience.

Flora Duh on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

The only interesting part is that the professor admitted to hiding it. Other than that, the content isn’t anything new. All the Jeremiah Wright and Ayers stuff didn’t even stop him when he was an unknown. Now that most Americans know and like him as a person, stuff like this will go nowhere unless it’s a huge bombshell. People aren’t going to want to believe they elected a radical, so this will all be background noise unless there’s a big revelation.

RepublicanInMA on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

How…umm…anticlimactic. So he embraced the ideas of a radical…that’s unsettling for sure, but if the Jeremiah Wright thing didn’t hurt him, I don’t see how this does.

GOPRanknFile on March 7, 2012 at 9:16 PM

Obama got away with that he didn’t know or heard wright was a radical.

Media managed to sell that.

Mccain didn’t want to expose that.

Lol…did you really just say “most smartest”? I can’t say that I’m surprised since this is coming from you.

GOPRanknFile on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

This just shows the hypocrisy of the media. Had a 20 year old video of Mitt Romney existed praising and introducing some radical Mormon, etc., the MSM would play it over and over with much concern.

carbon_footprint on March 7, 2012 at 9:15 PM

Well his religion used to teach that blacks didn’t go to heaven. They only changed it in the 70s because it was politically inconvenient. I meant that is something could bring up but no one cares really.

Realclearblue on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

I don’t know how people can say this is nothing, it could get people asking who is Derek Bell? And the fact that they hid this has to get people curious.

lisa fox on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

If I remember the statement Breitbart made, he said “VIDEOS” not one video. I assume there is more to come and maybe it gets the MSM to do some more work so they do not get shamed. I doubt it but just maybe.

bluemarlin on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

As a black american, a lot of what he said he has some resonance with me and I know a lot of other black people who would nod in agreement with a lot of these “outrageous” quotes.

So, do you have a point to make here??

Which quotes in particular are you 100% behind??

The media had this story, and they hid it.

it’s those who need to see him saying it that needs to see these tapes.

Aha, the video was edited to NOT SHOW Obama hugging the Nutty Professor.
They played the audio, but edited out the powerful image.

bluemarlin on March 7, 2012 at 9:19 PM

Breitbart’s strategy was to release a dud first, and then let the media attempt to marginalize and discredit it. Then he’d release something more substantial. Then watch the media try to deal with it. Then release an even bigger bombshell… and so on.

Unfortunately, Breitbart is dead, so there’s no telling what’s in the future.

Bell maintained that the standards for promotion and tenure at law schools – and Harvard, in particular – were inherently discriminatory and excluded a broad group of minorities

If he is speaking about the minority of Conservative points of view and especially those who are strict constructionists as regards the Constitution, I agree with him.
