Randall Terry might keep Obama from unanimous renomination

posted at 12:45 pm on March 7, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Barack Obama didn’t fare well in Oklahoma in either the Democratic primary or general election of 2008, and, yesterday, Oklahoma Democrats demonstrated that they’re still not his surest fan base. Obama captured just 57 percent of the primary vote, while pro-life Democrat Randall Terry captured 18 percent. (Not too shabby for a fellow whose primary purpose in contesting Obama was to draw attention to the life issue!). The results have implications beyond the state of Oklahoma, as The Hill explains:

President Obama had been the unanimous victor in every Democratic primary contest leading up to Tuesday.

Obama won Oklahoma with 57 percent, but Terry’s more than 20,000 votes was good enough to carry 12 counties in the deeply red state.

Obama secured 39 of the state’s 50 delegates on Tuesday, but Terry qualified for up to six. Another five remain uncommitted and will likely go to Obama.

In other words, if Terry doesn’t release his delegates to vote for Obama, he could keep the incumbent president from unanimous renomination. That doesn’t change the substance of the 2012 race, but it’s still a little poke to Obama’s pride. In general, Terry’s success also demonstrates that pro-life Democrats are alive and well and appreciate the option to vote for someone who shares a fundamental view.

As the conflict of visions in our country increasingly becomes a conflict between conservatives and progressives (a conflict that exists within both parties), the conservative movement should be able to reach increasing numbers of Democrats in the conservative heartland of the country.

That’d be pretty funny, but in the end won’t amount to much. The DNC will find some way around that to make sure their golden boy doesn’t get embarrassed within his own party nationally.

Yeah…ok. A person who no one has heard of outside of wishful thinking republicans, getting a 1 delegate compared to 44, is really something of note. This guy got 5,000 votes less than Randall

There is no way the DNC would allow a forced floor vote for renomination- especially because of a red state filled with bitter clingers that will never vote for Obama in the first place.

Even when a party has a crappy candidate like GHWB, everybody pretends that there is no question but putting the incumbent up for a second term! The only question is what it is going to cost the DNC to have Terry release his delegates.

Just curious… Why doesn’t the Republican party just nominate an unknown to run in the democrat primary in every state against BO? At the least, that would push Democrats into having to vote in their own election.

If Specter jumps tot he Dems overnight, why can’t a Republican do that and then announce they are running against BO? As soon as the primary is over, go back to the Republicans again.

JFS61 on March 7, 2012 at 1:12 PM

It’s not the person that matters, it’s the symbolism. These are all Dems anyway. It’d be cool if Lyndon LaRouche stole a delegate from Obama… but it’s even cooler that the issue was Life.

I’m hoping the GOP gets a 2-3 point swing from Catholic voters this fall. Anything that reminds the usually reliable Democrat RC voters of Obama’s pro-Infanticide and pro-Mandate positions is helpful… in a purely Democrat construct.

Terry doesn’t bleed anything into the GOP. It’s all Dem in-fighting. And if it comes to light that he’s a nutjob, so be it… he’s still a DEM nutjob.

Randall Terry has nothing to do with the actual Democratic Party. Randall Terry is a loathsome individual who is running this stunt to get attention. I actually hope it works for him, because more people need to know that Terry is one of the most evil men in public life. Like Westboro Baptist Church evil. Like disowning-his-son-when-he-came-out-as-gay evil.

If you don’t know who he is, Google this toad. Even some of the more extreme members of the HotAir commenting community will not want to be associated with Randall freakin’ Terry.

silvernana on March 7, 2012 at 1:55 PM

Terry is running as a Democrat specifically to make a point and to force outlets to run his pro-life ads. It would not be as effective for him to run as a Republican since votes for him could make a difference in the ultimate choice of candidate. There is no such worry since he is running as a Democrat. As an added bonus, he can show there actually ARE some Democrats who are pro-life and give Obama and a few other Dems a shock. If he can keep Obama from being nominated unanimously, so much the better. The narcissist-in- chief won’t like that one bit, though. I hope Mr. Terry is watching his back.

lukjuj on March 7, 2012 at 2:01 PM

Even though OK is a deep red state, A total unknown gets a respectable showing in the dem primary. The bigger picture is that Obama isn’t looking so good amongst a wide stretch of democrats. Hillary might just be kicking herself for not jumping in.

Lighten up – This has nothing to do with god or guns. It has to do with the fact that Terry is a hateful, warped little man with a twisted view of Christianity on par with (as Drew noted above) Westboro Baptist Church. If you want further proof, Google him (you’ll find enough to keep you busy for several days).

TedInATL on March 7, 2012 at 2:21 PM

Being pro-life has nothing to do with controlling anyone’s womb. It simply has to do with not letting you kill children for your convenience. You’re free to have children–or not have children–as you wish. You just can’t kill them as a method of birth control. It’s astonishing that this has to be explained repeatedly.

kbTexan on March 7, 2012 at 2:41 PM

As far as I’m concerned … the “choice” is made when one consents to engage in sexual relations. When one does so, there is a chance that one just might get pregnant.

I would’ve thought that, after over 40 years of explaining this to first graders, it would’ve sunk in.

And, you said it – abortion is being used as a convenient means of birth control – most likely, after a night of heavy drinking, bar hopping and bar closing pick-ups.

I’m sick to death of the extemination factories that have resulted.

Based on my recollection, the incumbent presidents who have been defeated have all been primaried. They haven’t been beaten in the primaries, but they have in the general. Obviously most deadlines have passed. I couldn’t easily find Democratic presidential primary filing dates, but Texas might be 3/9, Utah 3/15, New Mexico 3/16, California 3/23, New Jersey 4/2, South Dakota 3/27, and North Dakota 4/13. I’m in PA, our deadline has passed. If there’s anyone out there that lives in those states that could check it out further, maybe it would be worth pursuing this.

Now if only the Georgia Supreme Court (or the U.S. Supreme Court) takes and reverses the outcome of the Georgia eligibility challenge, throwing Obama off the ballot, that would leave Randall Terry as the sole Democratic candidate with any delegates, effectively handing him the nomination and setting up a Romney vs Terry election in November.

Hahaha
