I always go for a cost-effective/efficient legal method if one is available.

I’m not paying $230 for the Babylon 5 Complete Series when it was free on TV for anyone with Tivo… but I’ll pay $9/month to watch that and other shows & movies on my TV without legal risk.

I paid $50/year for UNLIMITED storage. I uploaded over 2TB of data from my NAS to it. Great service.

Oh, to add to the above. Ever hear of encryption for your backup drive? Or main one as well if you’re really anal retentive.

Safest data protection is a local hard drive. And cheapest as well. Although I’ll be the first one to say you do with your data whatever you please so if you trust people like Friend, then sure, go for it.

I agree with everything you said here, to the point that I said at HA a few days ago I believed that calling Fluke a “thief” and a “whore”, at least in the sense of ‘compromising oneself for recompensation of some sort’, were justifiable.

However, I do think Rush went off track with “slut” (Fluke never brought her own sex life into the conversation), and I wouldn’t dispute that it was stupid and tasteless (Rush did apologize, afterall), but, considering what I highlighted in your post, and Rush’s sense of humor, which is a component that’s an important factor in the differentiation of his usage of the term from Ed Schultz’s hateful usage of it towards Laura Ingraham (despite what the whiny, hypocritical Left would like us to believe), I wouldn’t say it was in bad taste.

Can someone explain why –out of all the dozens of advertisers who are now shunning the Limbaugh show– Carbonite has been singled out for particular approbation by the righty blogosphere?

What is it about this one ex-sponsor that is drawing all the fire, threats of revenge and stock-price schadenfreude from you folks?

Carbonite happens to be an entity that there are a lot of contracts that can be canceled immediately by us.

Proflowers’ “Day of Doom” will come this Mother’s Day, when we will place orders for flowers with everyone but them.

I had hubbie cancel our HBO package, including Showtime etc.
We had every channel.
Reduced our bill over $100!
Told them it was backlash against the Rush/Bill Mahr double standard.

Nice condescension there, but your external hard drive only works when you remember to back up to it. Your external hard drive shares the same physical location as your primary hard drive, therefore in the event of theft or fire, you lose all of your data, just multiple copies of it.

Read my post above. My external backup drive is constantly connected, same as is my large monitor. Via a USB cord. As for theft, I can’t imagine anyone stupid enough to face a 12 gauge trying to steal my laptops, someone is always home.

I’m in IT and will be the last persone to ever trust anyone with my personal and business data. Simply stupid idea, to be blunt.

You know what you people could buy with your $100 spent on giving your personal data to someone else?

An external harddrive and a lesson in “cut and paste.”

I’m in software development since 1977 and last thing I will ever do is place my personal and business data on someone else’s server. This idea is something a friend of mine and I discussed way before morons like Friend even understood the idea, back in 1994-1995, and to be honest, my decision against it back then was based on this same notion I still have today. I have no idea why anyone sane enough would trust anyone with their personal data. If companies like Google, Yahoo and others can’t protect their data what makes anyone believe some cloud service can?

Any local Costco has at least a couple of nice card deck size hard drives that will be more than enough to back up and hold all your personal data (bigger ones hold up to 3Tb, enormous). . I actually have two, one for non-stop daily connection and one that I do a complete backup just in case once every few monts. These drives come with great software that allows one to manage what is backed up and when. On Windows machines. Macs have Time Machine software already installed, just connect a hard drive.

All for less than $100. Less than one would pay for a cloud service for a year. I STILL have no idea why anyone would use cloud service for personal data backup, but in hind sight I could have been a really rich man had I listened to my friend back in ’94 and took his argument that there are plenty of novices out there who wouldn’t know better. Oh well…
