Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on March 6, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama isn’t exactly known for making himself accessible to the press in a press-conference format. The last time he had a press conference was in December, at the APEC summit. However, the three-month drought will come to an end today:

President Obama will hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a tweet Monday.

Normally, Obama holds press conferences to respond to emergencies or to push his legislative agenda.  So what’s the purpose of today’s presser?  ABC’s not really sure, but they have a pretty good idea:

President Obama will hold his first news conference of the year at the White House Tuesday afternoon, as his Republican rivals face off in 10 “Super Tuesday” contests.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced the news conference via Twitter this morning. The White House has yet to announce the timing of the event.

Expect the president to field questions on the 2012 presidential race and the state of the economy.

The state of the economy?  I doubt that Obama wants to talk about that, after getting the worst durable-goods report in three years and the worst report on factory orders since October 2010.  Obviously, Obama wants to steal some thunder from all of the attention that Republican candidates will get tomorrow by grabbing sixty minutes for himself.

Sounds like someone needs a hug.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

This is Obama’s typical IN YOUR FACE, IN YOUR SPACE language of the street.

It’s the equivalent of the street thug’s “chest bump.”

Er…no, make that: It is the street thug’s “chest bump.”

It’s just that to normal people, it looks like he needs a hug. But his gangsta cult followers will see it as a challenge, and they’ll be cheered up.

mountainaires on March 6, 2012 at 8:13 AM

Obviously, Obama wants to steal some thunder from all of the attention that Republican candidates will get tomorrow by grabbing sixty minutes for himself.

When I heard that the first presser of 2012 “coincidentally” happened on Super Tuesday, all I could think of was a little child annoyed that people were not paying attention to him. Fact of the matter is that unless the jug-eared idiot doesn’t have something of substance to say, he will be more or less ignored as the media time this cycle is going to be taken up with speculation about outcomes and then the reporting itself. Yet another defense of his attack on religious institutions or faux claims about a recovering economy will be ignored.

Preferred Questions: (reporters will receive brownie points by email, just to be fair):
“What’s your favorite color?”
.
“On a scale of 1 to 10, how happy are you?”
.
“Are you taking care of your health, getting plenty of rest and especially exercise?” As a followup, “What did you like most about the Superbowl?”
.
“Do you have any words for Whitney Houston’s family?”
.
“Who’s your favorite singer?” Related: “Who’s your favorite singing group?”
.
“When will we see you on the golf course again?” Related: “Do you have any advice for Tiger Woods?”
.
“If Sandra Fluke were your daughter, what advice would you give her? We mean ‘career advice’ since she is already a model for liberal youth?” Followup: “Which of your daughters is most like Sandra?”
.
“Do you have any comments for that evil, nasty, mean fat slob Rush Limbaugh who broke everyone’s heart by impugning the character of Sandra Fluke?”

cmsinaz on March 6, 2012 at 8:18 AM

I am really not looking forward to 30+ years of him mugging for the camera when he’s out of office (assuming he lives to approx 80 years old). Because you know we’ll never be rid of him. Ever. He’ll get his jug-eared face in front of a camera for everything from basketball to critisizing the current sitting (Republican) President. And the media will let him.

DailyKos: HELP OBAMA, VOTE FOR SANTORUM TODAY.

I’m about to ask you to do something that might sound strange, but hear me out: in order to help President Obama and all Democratic candidates this November, please vote for Rick Santorum in the Tennessee primary on Tuesday, March 6.

If Rick Santorum is able to keep the Tennessee primary close, it will help extend the Republican presidential nomination campaign. That would be very good news for President Obama, Democratic candidates and most importantly, our country. ….

…The more time Republicans have to spend winning over their crazy base, the worse all Republicans will look to the rest of America.

You are invited: Tennessee is a special case where every registered voter is allowed to vote in the Republican primary. You do not have to be a Republican in order to vote.

So please, head to your usual polling place on Tuesday, March 6, and vote for Rick Santorum. It might be painful, but you will be doing both President Obama, the Democratic Party and the entire country a big favor.

Keep fighting,
Markos Moulitsas
Publisher, Daily Kos

The state of the economy? I doubt that Obama wants to talk about that, after getting the worst durable-goods report in three years and the worst report on factory orders since October 2010.

He’ll probably get a question about gas prices, and that’ll be about it. He’ll claim credit for rising output that is based on leases from the Clinton and W years, babble about “investing” in alternatives and move on.

There will be more set-up questions about Republican controversies and “gaffes” than about Obama’s failures.

Tapper will at least have a chance to redeem himself with a decent question – maybe.

I think I’ll skip it.

forest on March 6, 2012 at 8:21 AM

Some of my guesses:

– he’ll boast about the Volt (Europe’s ‘Car of the Year’ and all that)…

– he’ll boast about how “the economy is picking up”…

– he’ll say something like he “champion’s women’s health” yadda, yadda, yadda…

…and talk about “the brave testimony before Congress” (by the likes of Fluke)…

– he’ll boast about how great a friend he/his Admin. is to Israel…

Not in any particular order there but I’d bet he starts off with the economy boasting.

And while the observant voters will be rolling their eyes at all of that, Obama is simply trying to worm his way to the top of today’s news because he’s jealous of the GOP candidates and a tad perturbed because he’s not going to be re-elected.

I think the magic-O effects are gradually starting to be noticed by *some in media* to have never existed and certainly now to be toxic to most.

But, I agree, the idea of thirty years or so of Baracka Obama parading through the fawning media is not something most will relish. What we can hope for is he’s exposed more and more before too many years hence come to pass.

I was toying with that one but I rationalized it out of the mix because conference tournaments haven’t even occurred yet so we don’t know regular champions and tournament champions, in most cases and the selection committee hasn’t made it’s selections of the final 65 yet. I thought it would be “unfair” to have Ø select under those conditions.

I just heard on the radio that he is going to announce the “refi your mortgage for free” program. He is about to take billions of dollars in current mortgages and turn them into an unsaleable pile of crap, just so he can be re-elected. There is no credit report, income verification, asset verification, no appraisal. He expects the lenders to cover the fees for re-doing all the mortgage documents and re-recording the mortgages. I don’t know who he expects to pay for all new title policies, etc. There will probably be no questions about any of this.

I suspect they will drone on for the first half about contraception, and then ask some perfunctory questions about the econmy, letting him muddle through with absolutely no follow-up.

He’ll make a speech about how the economy is doing great, jobs are popping up all over, the Iranians are listening to reason, and the Republicans are meanies who want people to starve and have babies because they don’t want anyone to use birth control. And he’ll say “I, me, my” a few dozen times, and tell us how Gandhi and Mandela couldn’t have done it any better.

And the MSM will swallow.

“Don’t know much about geography [57 states?]. Don’t know much about history. But I know that I love me and if everyone just voted for me, what a wonderful world it would be.”
“Don’t know much about biology [above my paygrade]. Don’t know much about economy [Obamacare will reduce the deficit!] but I do know that I love me, and when I force you people to your knee, what a wonderful world it will be.”

Only those who get paid to do so will listen to him. Glad I changed my mind all those years ago about a degree in journalism. I think even his die hard fans are sick of him.
