Allen West on VP chatter: I’m willing and ready to serve in whatever capacity

posted at 10:30 am on March 6, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Sarah Palin suggested it and, now, Allen West says he’d consider it. On Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien this morning, the Florida Republican Congressman recounted his unexpected and relatively quick journey to his present position of prominence and said he’d be equally willing to take on a vice presidential run.

“As far as the Vice President thing, you know, who knows,” he said. “Because it wasn’t too long ago I was sitting in the desert of Kandahar, Afghanistan, and now I’m here talking with you. … I am always willing and ready to serve my country in whatever capacity that the American people would desire.”

Sarah Palin was far from the first person to think that Allen West would be a compelling choice for the No. 2 spot on the ticket. Our own Patrick Ishmael has included Allen West as a potential VP candidate in Hot Air readership polls for months — and Hot Air readers have frequently vaulted him to the top of their preferred list. Still, Palin, as a former particularly energizing VP candidate herself, put West on the national vice presidential radar.

He’d make a better counterbalance to Mitt Romney than to Rick Santorum, though. The DNC and Debbie Wasserman Schultz will already hammer Santorum on “women’s issues.” Can you imagine the vengeance if West — who has directly called out DWS for her unladylike behavior — were on the ticket, too?

Regardless of whether he catapults to the national stage after a single term as a freshman congressman, though, West’s keen sense of patriotism and fresh tell-it-like-it-is approach to politics will ensure his popularity for years to come.

Face it, Romney would have to go to the right for his VP pick. West would be a good choice for a lot of reasons.

Happy Nomad on March 6, 2012 at 11:11 AM

West would also help romney with his complete lack of authenticity.

You may like your miniskirt shackles, but you are showing the depth of your awareness if you think having a pompous jerk like West running around yelling that his opponents should be more lady like is a winning strategy. i think he should also run around barking about the foodstamp president.

tommyhawk on March 6, 2012 at 11:17 AM

What Obama lacked in foreign policy experience, Joe Biden brought to the ticket.

What Mittens lacks in spine, hopefully West can bring that to bear. Oh and it would make our ticket more….well, than the Democrats.

How much more enthusiasm do Republicans need? Seriously. If Republicans need any more enthusiasm than just preventing another 4 years of an Obama Presidency, than something is seriously wrong with Republicans.

The cowardly crackpot accepted his $5K fine and hit the bricks. They were kind enough to let him keep his pension.

KeninCT on March 6, 2012 at 11:11 AM

So, West RISKED HIS MILITARY CAREER AND PENSION in order to save the lives of the men in his unit, and you think that’s cowardly?

I suppose to you, an act of valor is when someone plants a seedling, or smears human feces on the windows of a US Bank branch?

Go do what is anatomically impossible to yourself, you schmuck.

I’d vote for a Romney/Huntsman ticket just to see Huckabee’s and Santorum’s self righteous heads explode in unison.

The Army has a process. West was doing what he thought was in the best interests of his men in light of what intelligence indicated might be an ambush plot (it is a leadership thing you wouldn’t understand). He was unapologetic for looking out after his troops and had the support of the Secretary of the Army and 95 members of Congress.

In other words, it is hardly objective to call him a cowardly crackpot. Must be that you just hate black people.

idesign on March 6, 2012 at 11:20 AM

David Frum agrees with you.

It’s intellectually dishonest to play the “Frum Card” here. West would be a terrible VP nominee for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with how much any of us personally like

West is sexy for us on a level of conservative ideology. But we’re conservative ideologues. Our vote is already banked — we’re not the people who decide elections. We look at West and see all the firebreathing statements, the badassery, etc., and we get “politically erect”, if you know what I mean.

As hard as this may be for you to believe, there are vast swathes of voters out there — swing voters, not merely Democrats we’d never get anyway — who are deeply turned off by that sort of attitude. It does you no good to simply say “those people are fools!” Maybe they are. But we need their votes.

Moreover, West simply has no experience. Yes, it matters. It always has.

I think 1 year of battlefield experience is equal to 10 years of Congressional experience.

And if we are going to concede “experience”, Mitt Romney has only had 4 years of “Government” experience, 2 of which he traveled around building his image for a presidential run. Just like Obama did as a 4 year US Senator.

NEWT/WEST 2012!

Night Owl on March 6, 2012 at 11:23 AM

As much as I adore Col. Allen West (despite his disgusting Pigford vote), he is not a good VP pick for any candidate except perhaps Ron Paul. The black vote is a lost cause because the African American establishment is squarely in the Free Sh|t Army camp. Col. West has solid principles and balls made of tungsten alloy but neither is a requirement for a VP position – foreign policy cred, economic skills, and state/regional influence are. Of those, col. West has unfortunately little.

If one wants to play to identity tune, he could make no better bet than Gov. Susana Martinez. She is immensely popular in a purple swing state, a Southern Latina, and a photogenic (yet not so flashy as to annoy the female voters like St. Sarah did), soft spoken lady.

Archivarix on March 6, 2012 at 11:23 AM

There seem to be a number of military folks on this board who might be able to shed light on West’s departure from the service. How does an Article 15 proceeding (the “non-judicicial punishment” that led to West’s retirement and his being fined $5,000) differ from an actual court-martial?

LTC Allen West was never kicked out of the Army.
D-fusit on March 6, 2012 at 11:07 AM

Sort of true.
In essence he plea-bargained, paying a $5k fine and accepting ‘early (forced) retirement. Kept full benefits, etc.
In the case in question, it was revealed that he kinda went batso nuts and had to be restrained and subdued by his own men.
Outside of that, it seems he had an honorable career in the military.
Is he still this hot-headed?
At a minimum, he does come off a bit as a simmering kettle.
And not unlike Biden, he doesn’t like to miss an opp to deliver some puffed up rhetoric.

Drew Lowell on March 6, 2012 at 11:24 AM

An Article 15 is non-judicial punishment. There are 3 types of Art 15′s
1. Summarized
2. Company Grade
3. Field Grade

The key thing to remember is that an Art 15 is not a legal process, and beyond the restraints imposed on a Commander’s exercise of Art 15 authority by the Manula of Courts Martial, the COmmander is virtually unrestrained by legal process. For example, rules of evidence do not apply, and providing defense counsel at the hearing is not mandatory.
IF after receiving an Art 15 a Soldier has the right to appeal to the next ranking Officer.

A Courts Martial is an actual legal proceeding. A Judge will be appointed and hear the case. A jury can be requested. That jury can be of a soldiers peers (Same skill level) or an all Officer Jury.

There are 3 types of Courts Martials.
1. General Courts-Martial
2. Special Courts-Martial
3. Summary Courts Martial

Does this help explain it?

The last time we nominated a true conservative in 1980 we won 49 states. If republicans could get their acts together and get on message and explain to the American people why fiscal conservatism works and keep hammering the debt low taxes trimming spending etc than we can win because its common sense and it works. I think col west has more than enough leadership experience. Its refreshing that he hasnt been in washington that long. Fact on Col. West (whom I consider to be an American hero):

The Colonel was ultimately able to retire with full benefits, but his career with the Army was essentially finished. At the Article 32 hearing, West was asked whether he would do the same thing again. He responded:
“If it’s about the lives of my men and their safety, I’d go through hell with a gasoline can.”

Cherokee on March 6, 2012 at 11:58 AM

OK OK..we pick YOU.

Now what?

HumpBot Salvation on March 6, 2012 at 11:55 AM

I’m guessing it’s going to say something stupid. That’s my guess.

VegasRick on March 6, 2012 at 11:58 AM

I sincerely hope that some day you come in contact with one of those helpless detainees (or one of their brothers) where you need a man like West, and there is no one but slimy cowards like yourself anywhere near you.

Night Owl on March 6, 2012 at 11:51 AM

No problem … Kenny would instantly convert to Islam to save his neck. Lefties are like that doncha know.

darwin on March 6, 2012 at 11:59 AM

Stop lying. Second, join the military and go do a better job. I’m sure that after having IED’s destroy half your vehicles and kill half your men you’re gonna offer your captive some milk and cookies. Hell, knowing you you’d probably offer him your ass since you leftists are so accomdating to our enemies.

Support your president Kenny … join the military and help fight for the Libyans, Syrians, Egyptians and any other Muslim countries Obama wants to insert us into.

darwin on March 6, 2012 at 11:51 AM

You said it yourself, Colonel Angrypants lacked discipline. Hence, the Army showed him the door.

Leftist politics of personal destruction in 5… 4… 3…

Because, of course, how dare an African American be conservative!!

He got kicked out of the Army. He’s also very, very angry. Pure entertainment!

That is a bald faced lie, LtCol West was honorably discharged!

Dave, Ken understands … he just doesn’t care. The well being of a murdering terrorist is more important than any of his fellow countrymen.

darwin on March 6, 2012 at 12:07 PM

It’s pretty obvious not only have you never served, but you have no clue about “rules of engagement” in a combat situation. I had many a warrant officer friend that flew UH-1Hs. You want enemy intelligence? Take em up in pairs about 1500 feet above a rice paddy. First guy doesn’t want to talk? He got booted out. The second guy turned into a Kit Carson Scout.

Actions like that prevented another 60,000 guys from coming home in body bags.

All your “defenseless” buddy has was a firearm discharged next to his head.

At least you actually get a chance to vote in a primary that matters. Here in PA, it will be all over by the time our primary happens. The morning radio show here is all Santorum all the time. (Quinn and Rose) I have been hearing some pretty good radio ads by Newt’s PAC regarding Romney.

Night Owl on March 6, 2012 at 11:43 AM

That’s why there needs to be Election Reform. Why can’t we have Primary Day like we do Election Day? It is so unbalanced now with early voting, caucus States, advancing the Primary Dates, etc. No wonder there is so much fraud.

I haven’t heard too many radio ads, but my phone is on the answering machine, LOL Romney still lying on those tho. I get about 8 a day. We’ll see tonight when we stand. Maybe your vote will count after all:-)

bluefox on March 6, 2012 at 12:11 PM

West/Anyone

Romney is an eunuch. He proved it with his “I will not say…about Obama”…but he says/does anything against the ones on his side.

Wussies unite and rejoice!

West is for unrelenting impertinence, the only thing which will down the eunuchey but cunning thugs on the left.

I understand what you’re saying. But you must admit, if you get caught doing these kind of things there will be consequences.

KeninCT on March 6, 2012 at 12:17 PM

I have been pushing for West as VP from the get-go. Admittedly, my preference would be as Sarah Palin’s VP. The main modern function of a VP choice is to act as literal life and impeachment insurance for the presidential candidate if he wins. Even Debbie Wasserman Shulz would hesitate to push impeachment for Sarah if all it would get her is another bloody-minded Constitutional Conservative in the White House.

But let us be honest. Being a conservative running with Romney would degrade the credentials of the conservative, not enhance those of Romney. It would be painfully obvious that the choice would be for the sole reason of desperation to make the claim that Romney does not detest the base and the TEA Party. And Romney’s obvious belief that naming a conservative to a spot, which if he wins will be absolutely powerless, will suffice to fool the “rubes” of the base.

1.) Romney cannot point to one specific conservative issue where he has stood and fought against the Democrats in his 20 years of running for office, 4 of which he was governor. He has run against Democrats for his own benefit, but he has not fought what they want to do.

2.) Romney is already saying that he will not attack Obama, and to be honest he can’t, with his record.

3.) The only way that West could drag him over the finish line would be to be more popular with the base than Romney, which he [Romney] will not allow.

4.) If West starts winning over the base, the Institutional Republicans will cut him off at the knees from behind. They have done it before with Sarah, and as far as they are concerned it was the right thing to do. They will do it again.

5.) Talk of positioning for a putative 2016 election is … premature and probably irrelevant right now. To win in the long term, you have to survive the short term. The survival of the America we know after 4 more years of Obama, or 4 years of a Romney who will not roll back anything Obama has done is a bad odds bet.

BTW, West is about ready enough to be president as sarah palin was. Why the crack pot VP choices?

rubberneck on March 6, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Romney has to pick a conservative who’ll excite voters. West or Rubio, either will do it.
Since my 1st choice of Perry/Rubio ain’t happening, Romney/Rubio or Romney/West 2012.

lonestar1 on March 6, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Esoteric on March 6, 2012 at 11:20 AM

As hard as this may be for you to believe, there are vast swathes of voters out there — swing voters, not merely Democrats we’d never get anyway — who are deeply turned off by that sort of attitude. It does you no good to simply say “those people are fools!” Maybe they are. But we need their votes.

There lies the “middle/indy” fallacy. If one does not currently adhere to incumbants and/or where the majority vote played in 2008 – they are open game and can be “got” as a voter.

West can carry a “+” to Romney – if he is the nod – and thats the name of the VP game.
