Allen West on VP chatter: I’m willing and ready to serve in whatever capacity

posted at 10:30 am on March 6, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Sarah Palin suggested it and, now, Allen West says he’d consider it. On Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien this morning, the Florida Republican Congressman recounted his unexpected and relatively quick journey to his present position of prominence and said he’d be equally willing to take on a vice presidential run.

“As far as the Vice President thing, you know, who knows,” he said. “Because it wasn’t too long ago I was sitting in the desert of Kandahar, Afghanistan, and now I’m here talking with you. … I am always willing and ready to serve my country in whatever capacity that the American people would desire.”

Sarah Palin was far from the first person to think that Allen West would be a compelling choice for the No. 2 spot on the ticket. Our own Patrick Ishmael has included Allen West as a potential VP candidate in Hot Air readership polls for months — and Hot Air readers have frequently vaulted him to the top of their preferred list. Still, Palin, as a former particularly energizing VP candidate herself, put West on the national vice presidential radar.

He’d make a better counterbalance to Mitt Romney than to Rick Santorum, though. The DNC and Debbie Wasserman Schultz will already hammer Santorum on “women’s issues.” Can you imagine the vengeance if West — who has directly called out DWS for her unladylike behavior — were on the ticket, too?

Regardless of whether he catapults to the national stage after a single term as a freshman congressman, though, West’s keen sense of patriotism and fresh tell-it-like-it-is approach to politics will ensure his popularity for years to come.

Why get yourself dragged down by what will be an inferior Number one. You have time, Allen. You’re young.

On the other hand, Sarah Palin has become a force, even though she hitched up with an obviously inferior candidate…

The big question remains. Would Allen West be effective being a surrogate for Mittens. Palin was horrible in the surrogate role. Would West be any better?

MNHawk on March 6, 2012 at 10:41 AM

Col. West has always said he’d be open to being on the ticket as VP. I think he’s a better choice than Rubio simply because what he lacks in legislative experience, he makes up for with his time in the military. And don’t tell me he wouldn’t energize the base and put a lot of conservatives’ minds at ease with regard to Romney. Allen West is about a big a Tea Party supporter as you’ll find in Congress.

Night Owl on March 6, 2012 at 10:52 AM

Rubio is a high profile player whose senate seat could prove difficult to keep. And we need allies like Rubio in the Senate. A VP spot for him is a terrible trade-off.

West has been redistricted and faces a challenging election. His lack of political experience doesn’t matter as much for VP; his military experience leaves him more than qualified. Palinizing West, a smart, articulate man and decorated veteran, won’t work.

portlandon on March 6, 2012 at 10:55 AM

My only concern is that that this could well be a huge waste of Allen West. First of all, he would have to give up running for his new congressional seat. Secondly, he would probably end up as a campaign party favor, to be used to lure conservative voters, and then cast aside should Romney win the election. The Vice President does not make policy. He would quickly be relegated to the background. The Romney people, who appear to be a collection of power-hungry, unprincipled thugs, would quickly push him onto the sidelines, and “Quaylize” (or “Palinize”) him before you can say “Conservative”.

BroncosRock on March 6, 2012 at 10:57 AM

get real – Rubio is a far, far better pick than West, who would just be wasted in that slot.

Rubio can bring in a significant number of hispanic votes, helping the vote totals in a lot of places. West? 95% of blacks are going to vote against him, because he “acts white”. No getting around that – it’s hard to admit that it’s a total waste of time, money and effort to try and impress the black vote, but that’s the hard reality. Who does West bring in that isn’t already on board the conservative movement? Nobody, that’s why his pick would be a waste.

I think the attraction he has is misguided Obama envy – dems had a successful black candidate, we want one too!!! Fahgeddaboudid.

let West be a fundraiser, get him on a good speaking tour. Don’t waste a VP slot on him.

Palin had the best argument for West, that his understanding of the military would be an asset to a Republican administration.

If Romney gets the nomination, he’ll go along with the Establishment Republicans, since they are the ones that selected him. He won’t rock the boat.
