Sandra Fluke on “The View”: Rush’s apology “changes nothing”

posted at 2:37 pm on March 5, 2012 by Tina Korbe

While Laura Ingraham waits for an encouraging call from the president to compensate for MSNBC’s Ed Schultz calling her a “slut,” “reproductive justice” activist Sandra Fluke rejects Rush Limbaugh’s sincere expression of regret for calling her the same:

The Georgetown law student who drew an apology from Rush Limbaugh this weekend after the conservative radio host called her a “slut” on his show said that his public apology wasn’t sufficient during an appearance on ABC’s “The View” today.

“I don’t think that a statement like this issued, saying that his choice of words was not the best, changes anything, and especially when that statement is issued when he’s under significant pressure from his sponsors who have begun to pull their support,” said the 30-year-old student, Sandra Fluke. …

Fluke said she has not heard from Limbaugh personally but added that she’s not hoping to speak with him.

“The statements he’s made about me over the air are personal enough, so I’d rather not have a personal phone call with him,” Fluke said.

Fluke has the luxury to reject his apology in large part because she has the support not only of the president himself, but of big-name advertisers who have exerted bully-like pressure on Limbaugh. (Even The View’s Whoopi Goldberg said she found the speed with which they were willing to abandon the radio host to be disturbing!)

At this point, while it’s plausible that Rush apologized solely because he’s losing sponsors (as Fluke suggested), it’s also plausible that he has genuinely repented of his word choice. Limbaugh not only said he was sorry with a statement online, but he also opened his show today — his first on-air appearance since advertisers began to pull their support for his program — with a repeat apology, in which he made it clear that he violated his own personal broadcasting standards. In fact, he took a full 30 minutes to explain the entire episode to his listeners, including an explanation for why his advertisers left him (h/t The Right Scoop):

Ed said this weekend he thinks Rush was right to apologize, but I’m not so sure. He was wrong to use the word “slut” in the first place — it’s just a disgusting word that’s better left unsaid and Rush’s use of it conveniently played into the leftist narrative that conservative men are misogynistic (i.e. it was both tasteless and strategically stupid of Rush to say it) — but his apology makes it seem as though he did something wrong by expressing his opinion about a legitimate subject of national commentary.

Folks have made the argument that Rush’s “personal attack” was somehow different than similar name-calling directed to the likes of Laura Ingraham, Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann. The argument typically goes something like this: Sarah Palin et. al. are public figures, while Sandra Fluke is a private citizen. But, in this instance, Fluke isn’t exactly a “private citizen.” She’s a seasoned activist who introduced the subject of Georgetown law students’ sex lives to the national debate about the Obama administration’s religious-liberty-violating contraception mandate.

Indeed, her unwillingness to accept Rush’s apology underscores that she’s far from a naive private individual who unexpectedly found herself at the center of a national controversy; she made it clear by her remarks on The View that she’s prepared to stoke this controversy as long as she derives a benefit from it. As long as advertisers continue to withdraw support for Limbaugh and the left continues to rally around Ms. Fluke, she’ll milk his remarks for all they’re worth.

The answer: Let’s stop giving Fluke the benefit of this controversy. Let’s keep the focus where it belongs and patiently continue to correct the misimpression (a.k.a. lie) that conservatives want to ban contraception. Nobody wants to ban contraception, but the Obama administration does want to force religious employers who object to contraception on religious grounds to pay for employee health insurance that includes coverage for contraception. It’s to that mandate that conservatives are politically opposed. Some conservatives are also personally opposed to contraception and to sexual promiscuity — but they’re not seeking to change the culture through the government. It’s progressives who prescribe government solutions to cultural ills and, in the process, jeopardize important freedoms.

And as everyone has pointed out to you, that is approximately ten times the amount that you would pay for a month’s worth of birth control pills at Target or Wal-Mart, at least three times what you would pay for a Depo shot, and enough to buy about 500 condoms at Amazon.

So how do you explain those numbers?

northdallasthirty on March 5, 2012 at 4:55 PM

THIS +1000

Rush shouldn’t have used slut. He should have pointed out the truth and just called her a LIAR.

That said, it’s very amusing to see the same left who support things like “Slutwalks” suddenly act like pearl-clutching old church ladies because a radio host called someone a bad word.

BakerAllie on March 5, 2012 at 5:26 PM

I am 60 years old..and I have listened to Rush before…and I don’t remember him ever doing anything this stupid before.

And those companies who killed their advertising apparently felt he was bad for business or they would not have done it. The truth is Rush is not all that popular with a lot of people anyway and this was just beyond the pale.

Terrye on March 5, 2012 at 5:22 PM

No Miss TerryE..they didn’t think he was bad for business. You may have never heard this term before..Political Correctness..Rush, I believe started the term and it applies to every Conservative/Liberal issue…one sided, of course.

On her demand for contraceptives – has she ever been married or is there any evidence of men in her life? I’m thinkin’ if she’s “plays for the other team” there’s not much need for a catcher’s mitt (as it were).

whatcat on March 5, 2012 at 5:17 PM

This is exactly the kind of thing I am talking about…She did not demand contraceptives, she said she wanted them to be included in insurance plans because the costs is high and many women need them to deal with certain medical conditions..she did not say I am a whore and I want free birth control…

Now the way to deal with that request might be to tell her that any woman who wants contraceptive coverage to be part of her insurance plan should not be depending on the Catholic church for insurance..to shop around and find the kind of policy she needs and pay for it..that is her job..the government’s job…

Calling her a whore does not help counter her argument, it just makes her look more sympathetic and it is stupid anyway.

And now this whole thing has just taken on a life of its own.

If Fluke were a conservative doing this in a conservative cause, the opposition research arm of the Democratic party known as the MSM would have already told us how many men she’s slept with, interviews with those/that men/man, what her grades are, gone through every tax filing, told us about her parents, how much money they make, how they make it; she’d be the butt of late night jokes; and we’d have the squishes on this board trying to convince us that she has it coming to her because she stuck her neck out and CHOSE to go public.

ddrintn on March 5, 2012 at 5:27 PM

She never was going to appreciate any apology, she is an activist, Rush got in her trap and they will use her to destroy the man and push their agenda of free giveaways and freedom from any responsibility, that is how libs. work. She is now a treasure to Pelosi and the left. I think She will be running for office soon.

Ok, so what. He apologized. You didn’t listen to what he said. He is just as popular as he ever was except with RINOs and that’s because he won’t support the RINO candidate Romney.

Those companies you speak of would still be one store outlets if it weren’t for Rush. The only thing bad for their business was this decision. Do you think the libs will reward them for this decision to drop Rush. Only in word.

There is a concerted effort, a ‘vast left wing conspiracy’ if you will, to silence all conservative talk shows and these groups are constantly bombarding advertisers with threats of boycotts. Rush said he made a mistake and stooped to lefts/Dems level by engaging in inappropriate language. He apologized. Not accepted by anyone on the left. Who cares.

Advertisers pulling out of the Rush Limbaugh show?  When will enough be enough for conservatives and independents?

Rush is passionate about this country, conservatism and the opportunities for every man and woman to become a success in life, and it is time to stand up for the guy.  Yes, he made a poor choice in using the words to describe Fluke, but she is what he said she is.  I can say it and so can many others.  If you go back and listen to her opening statement during the committee hearing, one will here the words "I expect" over and over again.  Yes, Fluke is asking for the committee to agree with her…she expects it.  She expects for the taxpayers to pay for every woman’s contraceptive needs through higher insurance premiums for all of us.  Soon, we’ll be paying for breast implants for those women who have low self-esteem that supposedly comes along with having small breasts.  The list will go on and on and on.  Of course, diapers come along with the cost of having children and bearing the expense of several boxes of Pampers or Snuggies will soon be
deemed detrimental to the mental health of mothers and fathers.  That movement is already underway in the hall of Congress.

These attacks on the taxpaying workers and investors in our country are coming so frequently, it is no wonder that Rush lost his civility for a moment and said what he said.  This country is in a tailspin and there is no end in sight.  Following and getting involved in politics is no longer any fun.  In fact, politics is the dirtiest and deadliest game in town now and it will only get worse.

I am not a fan of boycotts, particularly against the advertisers of big business.  Everyone employed by the advertisers, conservatives and liberals alike, get hurt in the long run.  However, it’s time to take off the gloves.  We know Bill Maher on HBO called Sarah Palin a c*** and MSNBC’s Ed Schultz called Laura Ingraham a slut, and there have been many others from the left throwing out the punches as fast as they can move their lips.  It is long overdue for true and passionate conservatives and independents to hurt HBO and MSNBC and other left-leaning networks financially where possible.  We can boycott the networks advertisers and boycott the programs on HBO.  It is time to stand up for Rush and show those from the left that we can play hardball as well.  I personally will purchase a domain named "boycottforRush"
and start the website if others will join me.  And we can keep it going until HBO forces an apology from Maher and until Obama calls Ingraham and apologizes for Schultz’s big mouth.  We can name advertisers and programs that we intend to boycott and I believe things will tone down in the long run.

Yes, Rush likes his money and fame, but I believe the salvation of our country matters much more to him.  He needs to stay on the airwaves until we either get back our country from the Marxist Obama and the looney lefties or we lose it completely.  Who will stand with me and support a boycott
website?

slickwillie2001 on March 5, 2012 at 6:26 PM

IMHO he should not have offered an apology. She said that she and others spend $3000.00 per year on contraceptives. Lets do the math

$3000.00/$14.00 for the cost of a box of 36 condoms = 214 boxes of condoms.

214 boxes of condoms x 36 condoms per box = 7,714 condoms per year

7174 condoms per year divided by 365 days in that years = 19.65 times a day these girls are having sex.

IMHO that makes them a slut! Most prostitutes don’t have that much sex in one day.

Why would one allegedly “aggrieved victim of hate speech” direct millions of Americans to an anti-Semitic website?

antisense on March 5, 2012 at 6:51 PM

No. We aren’t getting paid to comment on the radio. We are free to express our opinions any way we choose, as long as we don’t violate the TOS on HotAir.

We know that Fluke went to bat with women who were demanding that their birth control be covered by their insurance, because they were paying so much for it that they couldn’t afford to have sex. We don’t care how much, or how little sex she is having, nor do we care about her STD’s. We don’t want to pay for any of it. She doesn’t want anyone in her bedroom, then nobody but her should have to pay for what happens in her bedroom. Doesn’t that seem fair?

We know that Fluke was either lying, or greatly exaggerating, about the COSTS of birth control, in order to push an AGENDA in Congress. She’s a political whore, at the very least. Rush apologized for the word he used. He rightly did NOT apologize for calling her out on her agenda, which he disagree with.

Do you comprehend this, yet?

From the NOW Website, regarding “Reproductive Justice”

The three frameworks are: Reproductive Rights, which encompasses legal protections for women, such as the right to a legal abortion embraced in Roe v. Wade and the right to contraception and family planning;
Reproductive Health, which emphasizes necessary reproductive services such as access to pap smears and pre-natal care; and
Reproductive Justice, which recognizes that reproductive oppression is a result of the intersection of multiple oppressions and is inherently connected to the struggle for social justice and human rights. Women of low economic means suffer consequences from the lack of access to complete health care (for example, the high rate of cervical cancers among women of color).

The right to have or not to have children and the right to live in conditions that enable each woman to make optimal choices for her own life is key to bringing about true reproductive justice for all women. NOW’s reproductive justice agenda includes: affordable child care and housing for low income women; pre- and post-natal care accessible to all women; child nutrition and pre-school programs, comprehensive school-based medically accurate and age-appropriate sex education for our youth; family planning and counseling; guaranteed job security for pregnant employees; paid family and medical leave; access to birth control and emergency contraception; affordable and accessible reproductive health care; treatment programs–not jail time–to assist pregnant substance abusers; and, last but not least, universal health care for all.

link to the philosophy that Sandra Fluke signs onto

We are supposed to pay for all of this with our tax dollars. The ultimate goal is “universal health care for all.” Only then, will we have “justice.” *rolling eyes*

redmama on March 5, 2012 at 7:03 PM

Ed said this weekend he thinks Rush was right to apologize, but I’m not so sure. He was wrong to use the word “slut” in the first place — it’s just a disgusting word that’s better left unsaid and Rush’s use of it conveniently played into the leftist narrative that conservative men are misogynistic (i.e. it was both tasteless and strategically stupid of Rush to say it) — but his apology makes it seem as though he did something wrong by expressing his opinion about a legitimate subject of national commentary.

And before I forget, Tina, I actually mostly agree with you. The only thing is, you should call it like it is, and Fluke went in front of the country and outed herself as a slut. She is a slut…and her behavior since shows this, and that she is a leftist obamabot.

Did any of the Journalists on the View ask Ms.Fluke to explain the $3000 figure she used that set talk radio abuzz? They thought originally it must be for lots of condoms, no one could come up with why she needed so much money.

She hasn’t answered that because it is just a dramatic number pulled out of the air and not a fact. It was meant for drama.

I am tired of this, as I imagine everyone else is.

In my state if you pay enough for your policy you get prescription pill coverage, and your co pay varies. What she is saying is that you should not have to pay a co pay. But you could choose a policy that didn’t have cheap prescriptions and save money upfront.
We did figure that The Pill costs under $200 per year, and that’s smaller than a months health insurance premium for a lot of people.

Recently the Obama Care has done that to doctor’s offices too, saying they can’t collect a copay. When people’s insurance was based on that figured into the cost the insurance company would reimburse the doctor. So, everyone’s premium went up, so you are in effect, Ms.Fluke, you would pay more for your insurance so you don’t pay at the counter at CVS.

A lot of people have a co pay on prescriptions for actual life saving medicine that is bigger than the cost of a month of pills.
This pill issue is ridiculous. She would just have to pay more for her insurance policy.

. Nobody wants to ban contraception, but the Obama administration does want to force religious employers who object to contraception on religious grounds to pay for employee health insurance that includes coverage for contraception.

Tiny, there are plenty of people who want to ban contraceptives- anyone who believes that life starts a conception can only find birth control pills objectionable.

Did any of the Journalists on the View ask Ms.Fluke to explain the $3000 figure she used that set talk radio abuzz? They thought originally it must be for lots of condoms, no one could come up with why she needed so much money.

Do you know anything about the many types of birth control pills? Not every woman ends up taking a cheap generic, some women need to take a higher cost prescription to address health issues or side effects associated with some of the cheaper generics. There’s no story here except for the ignorance of people who aren’t really knowledgeable enough to comment event on it.

bayam on March 5, 2012 at 7:15 PM
