Kirsten Powers on Rush and Sandra Fluke: Where’s the outrage at misogynistic liberal men?

posted at 4:57 pm on March 5, 2012 by Allahpundit

If you missed her widely linked Daily Beast item this weekend, read it now. Then read Treacher’s long look back at Our Moral Superiors’ most morally superior moments. The most interesting bit here is when Megyn Kelly asks whether she thinks liberals are genuinely offended by Rush but debilitated by a blind spot about their own side or whether they’re affecting outrageous outrage to put points on the partisan scoreboard. KP thinks it’s the former; I think the truth is in between. They are genuinely offended — not by the rhetoric, though, but by conservative opposition to abortion and support for prioritizing religious conscience above contraception coverage. That’s what makes Rush “anti-woman”; the “slut” name-calling is, supposedly, a window onto that deeper animus. Because Maher and Olbermann and Taibbi are, ahem, “pro-woman” on policy, they can be as personally nasty as they want and it’s not a window onto anything. The quintessential example of this is of course Ted Kennedy, whose career stands for the proposition that you can allegedly assault women and even leave a woman to die and be reelected for eternity so long as you vote the right way.

That is to say, for all of the left’s bleeding-heart smugness about “good intentions,” they’re remarkably bottom-line on this: So long as you support abortion and the rest of their packet on social issues, your actual intent when calling a woman a “mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick” is irrelevant. It’s an irrebuttable presumption of feminism, a de facto “get out of misogyny free” card. As a thought experiment, imagine, say, Maher suddenly declaring himself pro-life (that’s a mighty tough experiment, I know) and then calling a woman a “c*nt.” Think there’d be a response from the left then? I wonder, in fact, to what extent KP’s sensitivity to this is shaped by the fact that she’s pro-life herself. Must get tiresome for her to be accused of being a “self-hating woman” or whatever while left-wing heroes go around accusing their female critics of looking like pre-op transsexuals.

Apropos of nothing, my favorite comment on the endless Rush/Fluke saga comes from the Political Math guy, who points to this petition at the White House website calling on Panetta to drop Rush from Armed Forces Radio and quips, “Liberals have ‘moral objection’ to Rush, don’t want tax money paying him #SelfAwarenessFail”. Exit question via Guy Benson: Since we’re now all about organizations distancing themselves from media types who use “slut” rhetoric, when does Obama’s Super PAC plan on forfeiting Bill Maher’s $1 million donation?

“Moderates” are whiny poltroons waiting to be led by the nose. What does that make those who actually worry about what moderates do? From what I’ve seen, moderates are mostly liberals too gutless to admit it anyway. Real independents aren’t very moved by this silliness and I expect them to be intelligent enough to see through the BS and choose wisely this November. If you choose to believe poll numbers this far out, independents are streaming away from Turdboy.

I see: Moderates are whiny poltroons waiting to be led by the nose, and intelligent enough to choose wisely next November. Check. Got it.

The truth is that we aren’t going to persuade anybody of our point of view by yelling at the other side or by calling them names. We are going to get folks “to choose wisely” with facts and good arguments. Rush realized that calling Fluke a slut didn’t help our side, and he had the good sense to stop digging. He was absolutely right when he said that he had sunk to the libs’ level.

This ridiculous Fluke non-issue will be forgotten in a month. Now she’s just auditioning for a role at MSNBC.

Back to what’s important now that Super Tuesday is finally here. And it seems like it’s time to warm up the fat lady … http://bit.ly/qVdDUt

I gotta quit going to bed so early…I”m missing out on all the colossal leftist douches who seem to pop up like rats in the middle of the night.

Thumbs up to KP for criticizing liberals. But she’s still got a lousy smile. Has she thought about getting some dental work down. I have to shield my eyes every time she smiles.

Snaggletooth.

BuckeyeSam on March 6, 2012 at 7:09 AM

Why do I have to like any of these idiots?

Bill Maher is a sorry excuse for a human being, but that does not excuse Rush being a total jerk about this.

That is the kind of thing children do when they know they have been caught..tell us that Johnny did it and did not get in trouble…so what?

Rush was not even honest about what the woman said in the first place..she did not talk about her sex life at all…Rush did. He is the one who made it all about sluts and prostitutes and taping sex and putting it on the internet.

She is just a typical liberal who wants insurance companies to be mandated to cover all sorts of things that they should not have to cover..among them being contraception. She says she wants that because some women need the pill for medical reasons..whatever, it is still a power grab and it is not the role of government. Rush should have stuck to that issue..the role of government and left the tacky stuff out of it..it made him sound like a dirty old man.

Terrye on March 6, 2012 at 7:10 AM

FYI to the moron who wants AFN to drop Rush because “tax payer money shouldn’t be used to pay him”: AFN doesn’t pay ANYTHING for its programming. All shows are provided to AFN free of charge and AFN is not allowed to sell advertising because of that.

Bill Maher is a comedian. Since when are comedians taken seriously?

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:18 PM

You do realize every time you post stuff like this it shows just how stupid your ideology really is?
You give a pass to comedians who pontificate on politics rather seriously, but not a pass to a talk show host who jokes a lot & pontificates on politics rather seriously.
Bcs if you don’t, listen dude, the whole world is laughing at you.

Badger40 on March 6, 2012 at 7:45 AM

His show is labeled as comedy on HBO

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:23 PM

This is good.
Look how you parse & defend the absurd.
You’re such a hack.

Badger40 on March 6, 2012 at 8:05 AM

No I’m not but I won’t be outraged because I know it is coming from a comedian.

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:32 PM

How selective of you.
Your bias is tremendously entertaining.
Rush is entertainment.
And he’s quite the droll comedian.
So a pass for a guy who’s a ‘comedian’ who pontificates seriously on politics & is heavily involved in politics, enough to give $1 mil.
But no pass for a talk show host.
You do realize you are quite possibly one of the stupidest trolls on here, don’t you?

Badger40 on March 6, 2012 at 8:13 AM

The state of Virginia approves of state sanctioned rape thanks to republicans. How do you feel about that?

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 6:02 PM

You are getting more bizarre.
Please keep it up.
The entertainment you are providing me is priceless.
But I will say, as a person who has been raped AND from one who has vaginal ultrasounds every year, it is not even close to being raped.
Neither is a gynecological exam.

NoFanofLibs on March 6, 2012 at 8:37 AM

Fellow conservatives, I beseech you to stop feeding the monster. Refuse to play this obvious bait-n-switch. Gas is $4+ and rising, more Americans killed by afghans than by Taliban since apology-gate, economy in the toilet and unemployment above 8% for ever. Misery index approaching late 70′s levels. Keep hammering these home. I refuse to get Flucked.

huh? of course we have compassion for the victims it’s heartbreaking just as most of us are very sad for the family of Andrew Breitbart. do you seriously think we like to see bad things happen to fellow Americans? the mocking is clearly of Pat Robertson and his ilk not the victims

DBear on March 5, 2012 at 6:24 PM

Really? Is that why you said “yeah it’s sad they didn’t pray enough to keep the twisters away” and then end with “and you wonder why you guys get mocked”?

Why even bring that into it?

darwin on March 5, 2012 at 6:28 PM

That puts the onus onto the tornado victims with that comment.
And DumbBear wonders why we mock him.

Why hasn’t anyone made this point = BIRTH CONTROL PILLS DO NOT PROTECT AGAINST STD’S – casual sex, especially on college campuses, should never rely on birth control pills or IUDs. BC pills should only be used by married women or women with a long-term known partner. Why hasn’t anyone spoken out to say that all this media talk about birth control pills may very well lead to the unbridled spread of STDs? An unwanted pregnancy can still be solved with an abortion but STDs are deadly. If anything, why hasn’t Ms. Fluke been attacked for endorsing unprotected sex by claiming that BC pills/IUDs or other forms of chemical birth control are the answer to stopping pregnancies?

But then they wouldn’t get it anyway.

Badger40 on March 6, 2012 at 8:49 AM

When did lesbian’s gain the ability to procreate, thus necessitating contraceptives anyway? Ain’t no way the Fluckster is getting sweaty with the fellas. Total plant. Gas is $4+

Huckabye-Romney on March 6, 2012 at 8:53 AM

Lesbian’s = lesbians. Pet peeve, sorry.

Huckabye-Romney on March 6, 2012 at 8:54 AM

Gotta say … Rush stepped in it on this one. This should be a non-starter issue – and was all started by “the mandate” which was just another in a long list of diversions offered by “the O” to keep attention from his record. And Rush swallowed (pardon the pun) hook line and sinker. Stop the madness! 49.5% not paying federal income tax; 16+ trillion (with a “T”) debt; etc., etc., etc.!!!

mel23059 on March 6, 2012 at 8:56 AM

Rush apologized…and did so promptly and thoroughly. Which SHOULD have ended the trumped up affair.

BUT, the media needs things, ANY things to keep the spotlight off Lord Obama…and so this will be flogged by the media until they find a suitable replacement distraction.

And if the American public is mindless enough to allow this and re-elected Obama despite the DISASTER he has been…then the American “experiment” of self-government will come to an end. Obama will complete his “Fundamental transformation”…and we will enter into the era of Imperial Rule.

“Bill Maher is a comedian.”

Since when?

FineasFinn on March 6, 2012 at 10:08 AM

Pro FLowers, Legal Zoom, Tax Resolution Services, Quicken Loans, Sleep Number Beds, and Carbonite are some of the people that pulled ads from Rush. I have pulled my business from them and sent them an email informing them.

I suggest you do the same.

Boycott the boycotters!

BabysCatz on March 6, 2012 at 8:49 AM

I also made the point awhile back. I also ask the question why Fluke’s boyfriends haven’t volunteered to chip in for her birth control. Funny, the left never seems to want to answer that question.

Here’s another little tidbit for you. Did you know that Sandra Fluke, aka, the “queen whiner of the universe,” is following Ed Schultz on her Twitter feed? Here is this woman who is “victimized” by being called a slut (which she is) and yet, follows a man who routinely call other women “sluts” and “bitches.”

I guess “hypocrite” should be added to her description, right next to “slut.”

Kingfisher on March 6, 2012 at 11:21 AM

My guess is that Rush will have them replaced in a month or two. He isn’t hurting any.

He apologized and began going after Fluck in a more appropriate way yesterday. They may wish they hadn’t pushed so hard so long. Rush made atactical error and will recalibrate. Let’s see if the left can manage to not screw it up.

Zomcon JEM on March 6, 2012 at 11:34 AM

A misogynist is someone who hates women. Rush is not a misogynist, he doesn’t even hate Sandra Fluke; he just does not think the government should subsidize her sexual activities.

Many of the prominent women on the Left have said much harsher things about Rush than he’s ever said about them.

J Baustian on March 6, 2012 at 12:01 PM

This strategy will push the moderates to choose the wrong side for the wrong reasons. It doesn’t help things; it makes it worse.

Screw the moderates – they can roast for all I care. If they can’t choose a side then to hell with them. Fence sitters help destroy this country just as surely an inexorably as the liberals.

We are in a WAR, and acting like callow (*&^-suckers will not win it. You are a fool if you think you can placate an enemy that is warring against you. You can’t. You can obliterate them. You don’t yield until you have your boot on their throats.

The moderates are making unreasonable demands, and they will make us loose this war if we bow down and lick their shoes. If we can’t “win” without them then there are over avenues we can explore to take our country back by God.

SilverDeth on March 6, 2012 at 2:20 PM

This complete fiasco was designed to take the heat off the obvious violation of the first amendment and the general failure of Obama’s policies. So far it has succeeded beyond their wildest dreams and Rush falling into the trap made things worse. Contraception is cheap (or free) anyway and nobody is trying to ban these devices. The young lady at the center of the controversy is obviously a far left liberal. Why is she still in law school at age 30 unless she spends to much time being an activist and not enough time studying? Some news person should ask her parents what they think about her moment in the news.
