Kirsten Powers on Rush and Sandra Fluke: Where’s the outrage at misogynistic liberal men?

posted at 4:57 pm on March 5, 2012 by Allahpundit

If you missed her widely linked Daily Beast item this weekend, read it now. Then read Treacher’s long look back at Our Moral Superiors’ most morally superior moments. The most interesting bit here is when Megyn Kelly asks whether she thinks liberals are genuinely offended by Rush but debilitated by a blind spot about their own side or whether they’re affecting outrageous outrage to put points on the partisan scoreboard. KP thinks it’s the former; I think the truth is in between. They are genuinely offended — not by the rhetoric, though, but by conservative opposition to abortion and support for prioritizing religious conscience above contraception coverage. That’s what makes Rush “anti-woman”; the “slut” name-calling is, supposedly, a window onto that deeper animus. Because Maher and Olbermann and Taibbi are, ahem, “pro-woman” on policy, they can be as personally nasty as they want and it’s not a window onto anything. The quintessential example of this is of course Ted Kennedy, whose career stands for the proposition that you can allegedly assault women and even leave a woman to die and be reelected for eternity so long as you vote the right way.

That is to say, for all of the left’s bleeding-heart smugness about “good intentions,” they’re remarkably bottom-line on this: So long as you support abortion and the rest of their packet on social issues, your actual intent when calling a woman a “mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick” is irrelevant. It’s an irrebuttable presumption of feminism, a de facto “get out of misogyny free” card. As a thought experiment, imagine, say, Maher suddenly declaring himself pro-life (that’s a mighty tough experiment, I know) and then calling a woman a “c*nt.” Think there’d be a response from the left then? I wonder, in fact, to what extent KP’s sensitivity to this is shaped by the fact that she’s pro-life herself. Must get tiresome for her to be accused of being a “self-hating woman” or whatever while left-wing heroes go around accusing their female critics of looking like pre-op transsexuals.

Apropos of nothing, my favorite comment on the endless Rush/Fluke saga comes from the Political Math guy, who points to this petition at the White House website calling on Panetta to drop Rush from Armed Forces Radio and quips, “Liberals have ‘moral objection’ to Rush, don’t want tax money paying him #SelfAwarenessFail”. Exit question via Guy Benson: Since we’re now all about organizations distancing themselves from media types who use “slut” rhetoric, when does Obama’s Super PAC plan on forfeiting Bill Maher’s $1 million donation?

Advertisers pulling out of the Rush Limbaugh show?  When will enough be enough for conservatives and independents?

Rush is passionate about this country, conservatism and the opportunities for every man and woman to become a success in life, and it is time to stand up for the guy.  Yes, he made a poor choice in using the words to describe Fluke, but she is what he said she is.  I can say it and so can many others.  If you go back and listen to her opening statement during the committee hearing, one will here the words "I expect" over and over again.  Yes, Fluke is asking for the committee to agree with her…she expects it.  She expects for the taxpayers to pay for every woman’s contraceptive needs through higher insurance premiums for all of us.  Soon, we’ll be paying for breast implants for those women who have low self-esteem that supposedly comes along with having small breasts.  The list will go on and on and on.  Of course, diapers come along with the cost of having children and bearing the expense of several boxes of Pampers or Snuggies will soon be
deemed detrimental to the mental health of mothers and fathers.  That movement is already underway in the hall of Congress.

These attacks on the taxpaying workers and investors in our country are coming so frequently, it is no wonder that Rush lost his civility for a moment and said what he said.  This country is in a tailspin and there is no end in sight.  Following and getting involved in politics is no longer any fun.  In fact, politics is the dirtiest and deadliest game in town now and it will only get worse.

I am not a fan of boycotts, particularly against the advertisers of big business.  Everyone employed by the advertisers, conservatives and liberals alike, get hurt in the long run.  However, it’s time to take off the gloves.  We know Bill Maher on HBO called Sarah Palin a c*** and MSNBC’s Ed Schultz called Laura Ingraham a slut, and there have been many others from the left throwing out the punches as fast as they can move their lips.  It is long overdue for true and passionate conservatives and independents to hurt HBO and MSNBC and other left-leaning networks financially where possible.  We can boycott the networks advertisers and boycott the programs on HBO.  It is time to stand up for Rush and show those from the left that we can play hardball as well.  I personally will purchase a domain named "boycottforRush"
and start the website if others will join me.  And we can keep it going until HBO forces an apology from Maher and until Obama calls Ingraham and apologizes for Schultz’s big mouth.  We can name advertisers and programs that we intend to boycott and I believe things will tone down in the long run.

Yes, Rush likes his money and fame, but I believe the salvation of our country matters much more to him.  He needs to stay on the airwaves until we either get back our country from the Marxist Obama and the looney lefties or we lose it completely.  Who will stand with me and support a boycott
website?

Should Barack Obama call on his Super-PAC to return Bill Maher’s $1 million?

He has NEVER apologised for calling Sarah Palin a c.unt – MANY TIMES.

That he is on HBO is irrelevant. Either it is wrong to call a woman a “s.lut” or a “c.unt” or it’s not.

If you even hesitate, then you have no credibility whatsoever on the issue of Fluke and Rush…None…because what you are saying, essentially, is:

Calling a WOMYN a SLUT is BAD, BAD, BAD!

but…

Calling a WOMAM a CUNT is FINE, FINE, FINE!

This isn’t terribly surprising, and this incident should serve as a reminder why you can’t give supercilious creeps like Fluke the upper hand. She is going to keep playing the victim, and hope that nobody notices that she is:
A. Expecting the public to subsidize premium birth control for her, and
B. A fraud that falsely claimed to be a 23-year-old grad student.

Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke says Rush Limbaugh’s apology doesn’t change anything

Ms Fluke:

There is no Federal law requiring Georgetown University to offer health insurance or healthcare to any of its STUDENTS. The contraception mandate only applies to EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES, which is why you were not allowed to testify in the “real” hearings. Your anecdotes are I-R-R-E-L-E-V-A-N-T.

You should recognise the term “standing.” In the legal system, we
would say that you “lacked standing.” (Oh, not to testify before
Congress, but if this had been a case before a court.)

Your schemes and agenda will net results. I’ll give you that. You will succeed in getting Georgetown University to DROP ALL STUDENT HEALTH PLANS — FOR E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G — AND CLOSE THE CLINIC. Then, only those students, who really are 23 year-old coeds or 26 and under, will have insurance through their parents policies. You, however, will not nor will the most of your friends.

FU and the horse that rode in on you!*

You go, girl!

* Intentional. Your president did repeal the ban on bestiality in the military, after all.

Nope. Not true. It happens with liberals all the time, and they seldom apologize for their vitriol, because they MEAN IT. They really HATE conservatives. What passes for “hate speech” on the left, with regard to what conservatives say, is mere political disagreement, which generates comments from liberals like this one:

I think Rush is a great American, and I hope he continues to spout his anti-gay, anti-women, anti-immigrant, racist, bigoted, anti-asian, etc., “wisdom”.

What in your world view consititutes “too late”? Speaking only for myself, a “war on women” doesn’t concern me at all, I can stand up for myself. And, the women you’re sniping at on a daily basis here, many of them are gun owners, and proficient in the utilization thereof. And before the “OMG she’s threatening to shoot me” BS starts, that’s not what I’m inferring at all. What I’m saying is, I think conservative gals are much better prepared to handle a “war” than those of you who will hide behind us. I’ve been trying to respect you, and your opinion since you were foisted upon us during open enrollment. But it’s hard. You seem to be here all day, just to throw bombs. Intellectual discourse is one thing, just blowing in to insult folks is unnecessary.

waterytart on March 5, 2012 at 6:41 PM

Ms Fluke on The View: “I would encourage everyone to go to Media Matters….”

Alan Dershowitz: “Media Matters has crossed the line into anti-Semitism.”

Why would one allegedly “aggrieved victim of hate speech” direct millions of Americans to an anti-Semitic website?

Heil, Sandra!

GFW on March 5, 2012 at 6:40 PM

You would think that the Democrats would get 80% or more of the womens’ vote every time. They obviously aren’t fooling as many women as they would like to.

Amazingly, in 1992 Bill Clinton only got 45% of the female vote, despite the fact they were 53% of those who voted in that election.

For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

Obama’s War on the Church will fail.

Roy Rogers on March 5, 2012 at 6:50 PM

I remember quite a bit of outrage when Ed Shultz called Laura Ingraham an inappropriate name. But I think the point is–liberals generally don’t come out against it unless a conservative is the culprit. In Rush’s case, the comment was part of a larger narrative; in Shultz case he was just being nasty. It’s never good to talk about a woman in those terms, but fluke-ishima 2012 has blown up because Rush has simply helped these activists advance their agenda.

Rusty Allen on March 5, 2012 at 6:53 PM

So let me get this straight…idiot4life tells me that Bill Maher gets a pass for calling Sarah Palin a c*nt on TV

Bill Maher is a comedian. Since when are comedians taken seriously?

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:18 PM

And yet on the other hand, we are supposed to “take seriously” a statement by a guy on the radio, a person to whom the Left has referred to for years as “an entertainer”, “an overweight drug addict”, and worse?

I think this whole thing will backfire on the Left. Big time.

Here’s 3 for ya:
Is it “pro-American” to confiscate earnings from people who work for a living and contribute to society just to give it away to someone who does not want to work?
Is it “pro-American” for the government to tell people what kind of products and services they MUST purchase?
Is it “pro-American” to insult people who were just killed by natural disaster by talking about how their religion didn’t save them?
(BTW – I’m a conservative atheist – so I don’t believe “their God killed them” because I don’t believe he exists – but I sure wouldn’t use that to attack or mock people who have just been devastated by natural disaster)

I said a week ago what was obvious, that this chick is now Joan of Arc among libs and this issue goes all the way to November. Dems will talk about nothing else, the MSM will report on nothing else, and because Republican candidates and communications strategists at the highest levels have proven that they cant straight talk their way out of a wet paper bag.

Romney will be dogged by this all summer because he is straight-up incapable of slamming a Wolf Blitzer of Angria Mitchell-Greenspan on the air over this entirely fabricated and profoundly dishonest stunt. Gingrich and Santorum would be triply bad of course but luckily both are punching one-way tickets to Palookaville about now.

Democrats laid out a leg trap and didnt even bother to cover it with leaves because they knew that tone-deaf culturally brain dead Republican strategists, office-holders (Brown, McCain)and opinion-makers would happily step right into it.

DBear on March 5, 2012 at 7:01 PM

Regarding the state-required ultrasounds, I think some people on my side overreach by calling them “state-sponsored rape.” The term is too imprecise and too inflammatory.

However, it’s impossible for a true conservative, a champion of liberty or an enemy of “statism” to claim that any government is justified in requiring an medically unnecessary medical procedure (which, in the first trimester normally means vaginal penetration) to be performed against the wishes of the patient and without the recommendation of a doctor, all for the express purpose of trying to discourage a woman from exercising her constitutional right.

If you are morally opposed to abortion, you can claim that such infringement is morally justifiable because it might make the woman change her mind about having the abortion, though there is no evidence yet on whether it succeeds in doing so.

But you can not claim that such a law has anything remotely to do with “liberty.” If you say that it’s wrong for the government to require insurance companies to provide contraception coverage, but it’s right for the government to probe vaginas, you are a hypocrite of the first order.

Drew Lowell on March 5, 2012 at 7:01 PM

None of this matters, the price of gas will trump all issues. With the Iran/Israel situation coming to a head the only thing that can save Obama is the wartime President scenario. A war could come in weeks IMHO.

Taxes are necessary for those purposes. I don’t object to those taxes. Many people are unemployed by choice. Many are on the government dole. Do you think once people are on the government dole, that there is any incentive for them to get off of it? Do you think welfare helps people to get out of poverty, or perpetuates their poverty? Has the “war on poverty” been successful?
