Kirsten Powers on Rush and Sandra Fluke: Where’s the outrage at misogynistic liberal men?

posted at 4:57 pm on March 5, 2012 by Allahpundit

If you missed her widely linked Daily Beast item this weekend, read it now. Then read Treacher’s long look back at Our Moral Superiors’ most morally superior moments. The most interesting bit here is when Megyn Kelly asks whether she thinks liberals are genuinely offended by Rush but debilitated by a blind spot about their own side or whether they’re affecting outrageous outrage to put points on the partisan scoreboard. KP thinks it’s the former; I think the truth is in between. They are genuinely offended — not by the rhetoric, though, but by conservative opposition to abortion and support for prioritizing religious conscience above contraception coverage. That’s what makes Rush “anti-woman”; the “slut” name-calling is, supposedly, a window onto that deeper animus. Because Maher and Olbermann and Taibbi are, ahem, “pro-woman” on policy, they can be as personally nasty as they want and it’s not a window onto anything. The quintessential example of this is of course Ted Kennedy, whose career stands for the proposition that you can allegedly assault women and even leave a woman to die and be reelected for eternity so long as you vote the right way.

That is to say, for all of the left’s bleeding-heart smugness about “good intentions,” they’re remarkably bottom-line on this: So long as you support abortion and the rest of their packet on social issues, your actual intent when calling a woman a “mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick” is irrelevant. It’s an irrebuttable presumption of feminism, a de facto “get out of misogyny free” card. As a thought experiment, imagine, say, Maher suddenly declaring himself pro-life (that’s a mighty tough experiment, I know) and then calling a woman a “c*nt.” Think there’d be a response from the left then? I wonder, in fact, to what extent KP’s sensitivity to this is shaped by the fact that she’s pro-life herself. Must get tiresome for her to be accused of being a “self-hating woman” or whatever while left-wing heroes go around accusing their female critics of looking like pre-op transsexuals.

Apropos of nothing, my favorite comment on the endless Rush/Fluke saga comes from the Political Math guy, who points to this petition at the White House website calling on Panetta to drop Rush from Armed Forces Radio and quips, “Liberals have ‘moral objection’ to Rush, don’t want tax money paying him #SelfAwarenessFail”. Exit question via Guy Benson: Since we’re now all about organizations distancing themselves from media types who use “slut” rhetoric, when does Obama’s Super PAC plan on forfeiting Bill Maher’s $1 million donation?

Bill Maher is a comedian. Since when are comedians taken seriously?

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Why did his show on ABC get cancelled?

Del Dolemonte on March 5, 2012 at 5:32 PM

Rush should have never called Fluke a slut or prostitute.
He should make an apology to genuine sluts and Prostitutes.

Fluke is a Moocher, who is soon to get her Looters License from Georgetown Law.

Sluts do it for fun, both participants win, Whores do it as an honest business, an exchange of services for money; Both participants get what they want.. Win Win for all involved in both cases.

Moochers just take a share of what the Looters steal from the public.. The public looses.

Maher didn’t call Palin a “c” word during his comedy act. He called her that during a ceremony where he won an award from a gay and lesbian group.

No one thinks he was joking. That’s what he actually thinks.

But it’s Palin and it doesn’t count.

Maher is hardly the only male lib routinely tossing off vulgar ad hominens against conservative women. There is also Ed Schultz, Olbermann, Sullivan . . . just to name a few.

Plus there are plenty of other libs who have joined in with nasty smears against conservatives of both genders — remember homosexual anchor Anderson Cooper of CNN, sneering and snickering while making on-air “teabagger” jokes about conservatives who wanted fiscal responsibility in our federal government (what nerve, eh?)?

Where was all the righteous liberal outrage then?

AZCoyote on March 5, 2012 at 5:38 PM

The amount of abuse Nancy Pelosi gets trumps any abuse Sarah Palin has ever received

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:27 PM

That’s a lie and you know it. When has Pelosi ever been called the c-word or a tw@t by comedians? When has she been called slutty or had statutory rape jokes made about her daughter by a late night talk show host? When did her family nearly get bankrupted by frivolous ethics charges? When did she have the son of a politician of the opposing party hack into her personal e-mail account? When did she have reporters digging through 24,000 of her work e-mails? When did she have a journalist move into the house next door to hers into order to spy on her for a book he was writing? When was a dummy made up to look like her hung in effigy? When was she accused of being an accessory to mass murder in Tuscon? When was she accused of faking a pregnancy in order to cover for her daughter getting knocked up?

I could go on for the rest of the day with examples of the abuse Palin’s endured that Pelosi’s never been subjected to. And let’s not forget that half of the examples I cited occurred AFTER Palin resigned the governor’s office and returned to private life. Meanwhile Pelosi was House Speaker for 4 years, a mere 2 heartbeats away from the Presidency, and presided over $5 trillion added to our national debt, the passage of Obamacare, the passage of Porkulus, and over an increase in federal spending of over 30%. In other words, she deserves a helluva lot of scorn for her record which frankly she’s never received enough of to this day.

One of Hollywood’s outspoken Republicans, the Everybody Loves Raymond star sent a series of blistering messages aimed at Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown student who was denied the right to testify before Congress and then became the target of Rush Limbaugh’s flurry of mysognistic name calling.

Heaton mocked Fluke with sarcastic remarks such as “G-Gal: you’ve given yer folks great gift for Mother’s/Father’s Day! Got up in front of whole world & said I’m having tons of sex- pay 4 it!” and “Hey G-Town: stop buying toothpaste, soap, and shampoo! You’ll save money, and no one will want to sleep with you!”

SteveMG on March 5, 2012 at 5:31 PM

This just ain’t so. It’s given a pass, regrettably, but it’s not “OK”. Either way, though: haters gonna hate. The best we can do is boycott advertisers and vote bums out – which is just what a lot of us are trying to do, on the left and the right. The left certainly has to resist the urge to make political positions against abortion or public health into a battle of personal vilification, but then again the right has to do the same when it comes to, say, a peaceful middle eastern agenda. We can start working on this immediately. Any takers?

There is no such thing as bad publicity and I bet Rush had a record number of listeners today. As often happens, when Rush gets someone to listen once he retains a few and even converts a few.

Rancher on March 5, 2012 at 5:17 PM

I was thinking the same thing during his opening monologue. And guess what he did besides apologizing… he explained the whole hypocrisy of the Democrats as well as defining what exactly was going on. More people heard that opening, I bet, than ever heard about the original controversy.

I am sure there are other companies and businesses waiting in line for an audience of 20 million. And those who ran have not and will not increase their sales. Most of the people who wrote emails or phoned expressing their faked outrage probably still live in their mom’s basements.
Rush has lost sponsors before. The one I remember most was Florida Orange Juice a long time ago. NOW orchestrated that. They were protesting all over the south, but I don’t remember what the controversy was then.

A Blast from the Past, circa 2002, from CNN:

May 14, 2002

Goodbye Bill Maher, hello Jimmy Kimmel.

The Associated Press is reporting that ABC is canceling Bill Maher’s late-night topical talk show, “Politically Incorrect,” and replacing it with an entertainment show led by Comedy Central’s Jimmy Kimmel. Daily Variety confirms that Kimmel has been signed to a contract.

“Politically Incorrect” has been on thin ice since just after the September 11 terrorist attacks, when host Maher was quoted as referring to past United States military actions as “cowardly.” FedEx and Sears pulled their advertising from the show.

Apparently because Maher does a comedy act that whatever he says anywhere at any time can be excused as being part of his act.

Even though, again, he made the comment during an award ceremony and not during his act.

But even if it was part of his comedy act, doesn’t such language contribute to the overall demeaning of women?

Liberals say they’re against misogyny in America. But isn’t sexist language like this – even in a comedic sense - still contributing to that anti-woman view?

Of course it does.

What’s more amusing than conservatives/Republicans accusing the other side of misogny — in the same month that GOP-controlled state legislatures are preparing so-called pro-life bills specifically designed for the ritual humiliation of women?

What’s more amusing than people complaining about “unfairness” toward Rush Limbaugh, given the misinformation that the man himself emits three hours every weekday?

It’s this: picturing Rush just stewing as he hears his defenders equate him with guys like like Maher, Olbermann and Taibbi, as if any of those have even a fraction of El Rushbo’s poli-cult clout.

Drew Lowell on March 5, 2012 at 5:59 PM

I think Rush is a great American, and I hope he continues to spout his anti-gay, anti-women, anti-immigrant, racist, bigoted, anti-asian, etc., “wisdom”.
It’s just refreshing to know he’s out there, just doing his thing. Keep up the good work El-Rushbo…your country needs you!
Limbaugh for president!
Maybe a Limbaugh/Palin dream ticket? One can dream…right?

Yes, and we don’t all vote Dem, where misogyny is accepted as the norm.

Why was Doug Tracht removed from the air if the remarks of comedians are not to be taken seriously?

ghostwriter on March 5, 2012 at 5:54 PM

Or Krammer for that matter. And yet Daniel Tosh says things in every single show that are blatantly racist/homophobic/misogynistic, which are somehow OK. Honestly, I don’t get how these rules were decided.

Esthier on March 5, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Bob Beckel just encouraged everyone to accept Rush’s apology and move one.

How do I feel about your propaganda? I think it’s highly offensive to women, and if you don’t have an actual argument, just save us all the pretense and admit it.

Esthier on March 5, 2012 at 6:04 PM

Anybody ever see what the Progs call Michelle Malkin..? “Slut” would be a compliment compared to what she gets.

I appreciate Kirsten Powers’ piece in the “Daily Beast”. Like Juan Williams, I consider Powers to be one of the good guys–somebody who is fundamentally decent and fair-minded. However, like Williams, Powers can be quite misguided despite her good intentions. From her piece, it seems to me that she seems to consider all criticism of women to be mysongistic. For example, she seems to put Maher’s attacks on Palin as a C*** or a t*** as being of the same character as pointing out that Hilary rode Bill’s coattails to the Senate. These two kinds of attacks are not the same: One is baseless name-calling, and the other is predicated on an interpretation of facts. Moreover, when somebody makes an attack on another person, it is not necessarily an attack on an entire societal segment: Hating Sarah Palin or Hilary Clinton is not the same thing as hating women…

Bill Maher is a comedian. Since when are comedians taken seriously?

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Liberals seem more likely than not seriously believe in clownish things. Global warming as a crisis to humanity..GM food as dangerous..”green energy” is a good idea..only whites can be bigots or racists..Bill Mahr-de-har-har is smart..DDT is a carcinogen..Obama is smart..organic food is “better”..etc etc. I believe its part of the mental illness of liberalism.

Esthier on March 5, 2012 at 6:07 PM

I understand Trojan are leaving out of the Rush show too(kidding). I wish they’d leave the cable business though -tired of watching those paid female twerps giggle with that “you know look. Talk about prostitution…

We’ve come a long way since chastity was an expected goal for some girls -downhill, I might add.
