Kirsten Powers on Rush and Sandra Fluke: Where’s the outrage at misogynistic liberal men?

posted at 4:57 pm on March 5, 2012 by Allahpundit

If you missed her widely linked Daily Beast item this weekend, read it now. Then read Treacher’s long look back at Our Moral Superiors’ most morally superior moments. The most interesting bit here is when Megyn Kelly asks whether she thinks liberals are genuinely offended by Rush but debilitated by a blind spot about their own side or whether they’re affecting outrageous outrage to put points on the partisan scoreboard. KP thinks it’s the former; I think the truth is in between. They are genuinely offended — not by the rhetoric, though, but by conservative opposition to abortion and support for prioritizing religious conscience above contraception coverage. That’s what makes Rush “anti-woman”; the “slut” name-calling is, supposedly, a window onto that deeper animus. Because Maher and Olbermann and Taibbi are, ahem, “pro-woman” on policy, they can be as personally nasty as they want and it’s not a window onto anything. The quintessential example of this is of course Ted Kennedy, whose career stands for the proposition that you can allegedly assault women and even leave a woman to die and be reelected for eternity so long as you vote the right way.

That is to say, for all of the left’s bleeding-heart smugness about “good intentions,” they’re remarkably bottom-line on this: So long as you support abortion and the rest of their packet on social issues, your actual intent when calling a woman a “mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick” is irrelevant. It’s an irrebuttable presumption of feminism, a de facto “get out of misogyny free” card. As a thought experiment, imagine, say, Maher suddenly declaring himself pro-life (that’s a mighty tough experiment, I know) and then calling a woman a “c*nt.” Think there’d be a response from the left then? I wonder, in fact, to what extent KP’s sensitivity to this is shaped by the fact that she’s pro-life herself. Must get tiresome for her to be accused of being a “self-hating woman” or whatever while left-wing heroes go around accusing their female critics of looking like pre-op transsexuals.

Apropos of nothing, my favorite comment on the endless Rush/Fluke saga comes from the Political Math guy, who points to this petition at the White House website calling on Panetta to drop Rush from Armed Forces Radio and quips, “Liberals have ‘moral objection’ to Rush, don’t want tax money paying him #SelfAwarenessFail”. Exit question via Guy Benson: Since we’re now all about organizations distancing themselves from media types who use “slut” rhetoric, when does Obama’s Super PAC plan on forfeiting Bill Maher’s $1 million donation?

I think you’re being too generous, AP. This is Tuscon all over again. They’re attempting to intimidate conservatives on talk radio, in the news media, and within the Republican Party into silence heading into the general election. Only this time they’re using a 30 year-old, promiscuous, left-wing radical activist who wants the taxpayers to subsidize her sex life instead of the far more sympathetic figure of a sitting Congresswoman who was fighting for her survival after a gunshot wound to the head. We can’t back down from this fight. Rush’s show will soldier on as it always does, but the conservative movement as a whole must remain vigilant. Be Breitbart!

Some of the most offensive examples include david “I exploit female interns: letterman, dingy-harry “Gillibrand is HOT” reid, TAX CHEAT “very, very short fuse” olbermann, “thrill up my leg” matthews, and the others who viciously attacked hillary during the 08 campaign – and every other woman ALL THE TIME – like a pack of rabid dogs. Rush should have never called Fluke a slut or prostitute.
He should make an apology to genuine sluts and Prostitutes.

Fluke is a Moocher, who is soon to get her Looters License from Georgetown Law.

Sluts do it for fun, both participants win, Whores do it as an honest business, an exchange of services for money; Both participants get what they want.. Win Win for all involved in both cases.

Moochers just take a share of what the Looters steal from the public.. The public looses.

The hearing that started all of this was called by Darrell Issa, a California Republican, he’s the head of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Issa is on our side. His point in calling this hearing was to get facts into the record that otherwise would not be aired. But his committee is made up of both Republicans and Democrats, and there are rules and procedures that are followed in calling witnesses. What this was all about was the president of the United States acting extra-constitutionally, mandating that Catholic churches and their schools provide contraceptives, abortifacients. He doesn’t have that power constitutionally. He cannot mandate these things.

It’s sad to see the woman try to spin one of the liberal talking points that is so ridiculous. You can literally see the “please don’t laugh at me” look in her eyes.

I agree with MK in that she should move to an “independent” voice. It would be easier and more effective for her just to speak on what she believes rather than having to regurgitate talking points.

Maher has also done ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. He’s appeared with George Will et al. during the round table discussion.

Unfortunately, he’s taken seriously by large segments of the news media. CNN, MSNBC, ABC…..

And he willingly agrees to be considered serious too.

So the “he’s just a comic” line doesn’t work.

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:23 PM

False advertising.

The amount of abuse Nancy Pelosi gets trumps any abuse Sarah Palin has ever received

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:27 PM

And any person calling Ms. Pelosi the “c” word would be savaged for it.

Rightly so.

SteveMG on March 5, 2012 at 5:29 PM

I have seen worst on this site about Pelosi

liberal4life on March 5, 2012 at 5:28 PM

Sears is done with Rush too. Soon he will be reduced to selling survival seeds

DBear on March 5, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Sears never advertised on his show. Please try again.

“Jerry Brown associate: Call Meg Whitman ‘whore’”

Nope, nothing wrong with that, eh?

California NOW Chief: Calling Whitman a ‘Whore’ is Accurate

“The president of the National Organization for Women may have said it’s wrong for anyone to call a woman a ‘whore,’ but the head of the California NOW affiliate says Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman is one.

California NOW President Parry Bellasalma told the TPM blog on Thursday that the description of the Republican candidate for governor of California is accurate.

‘Meg Whitman could be described as “a political whore.” Yes, that’s an accurate statement,’ Bellasalma said after a TPM blogger called to ask her about a story that appeared on the Daily Caller website.”

And the Republicans are in a war against women?

“What left wing media?”

Rush has decided to rename his 3 hour radio stint “The Limbaugh Comedy Show”.

Just think, now you will be able to shelve your outrage and listen-in without any of that terrible personal angst.

Dear Lord this time traveling commenting has got to stop.

Since you’re not against abuse why are you complaining?

And any person calling Ms. Pelosi the “c” word would be savaged for it.

Rightly so.

Since we’re now all about organizations distancing themselves from media types who use “slut” rhetoric, when does Obama’s Super PAC plan on forfeiting Bill Maher’s $1 million donation?
=====================================================

We listen in on the Oval Office conversation!!!!

Obama:”What is it now Smithers,er AxleRod.”!

AxleRod:”Um.Mr.Burns…er Obama, are you going to give that Million
dollars back”!

Obama:”When Pigs fly”!!!

This contraception debate is helping to bring down the House of Limbaugh, thanks GOP primary!

DBear on March 5, 2012 at 5:24 PM

Yes, because America will no doubt sympathize with a woman who claims to spend $1000/year on birth control. Liberal women take pretend to take her seriously, the rest of the women in America are laughing at her. But, in your book, this is a ‘win’. Bringing down Rush is like bringing down McDonalds. Good luck.

I’m labeling all my Hot Air comments as comedy from here on. I can say anything I want now.

Warning, comedic content.

Liberal4life, you’re a damn idiot.

Hey, could this catch on?

smoothsailing on March 5, 2012 at 5:31 PM

liberal4life is making Kirsten Powers’ point for all of us to see.

Don’t need to read Powers; just read liberal4life’s posts.

Liberal sexism/misogyny is okay because the liberal men expressing it are on the “right” side on abortion et cetera.

Two hot blondes in red. There’s a video? Video? bbl

Paul-Cincy on March 5, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Check out Fox & Friends First, which aired for the first time this morning at 5:00 am. Ainsley Earhardt and another blond. Yum-my. I happened to be up, so I tuned in. I can’t remember a word they said. It takes the Roger Ailes formula to a new level.
