Quotes of the day

posted at 8:30 pm on March 4, 2012 by Allahpundit

“The chair of the Democratic National Committee has called out GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney for not condemning comments by radio personality Rush Limbaugh about a law student who testified on Capitol Hill in support of the administration’s health care law.

“‘The bottom line is, the leading candidate on the Republican side for president couldn’t even bring himself to call Rush Limbaugh’s comments outrageous and call him out and ask him to apologize,’ Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the DNC leader, said on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ on Sunday…

“‘There is a dramatic contrast between President Obama and his view that women who have access to affordable health care, including contraception, and Mitt Romney and the Republicans, who believe that women should not,’ she said.”

***

“‘The lie was that somehow she was asking that taxpayers pay for contraception,’ Axelrod said on ABC’s This Week. ‘The policy is that in basic insurance policies, contraception — contraceptive services, birth control, should be included.’

“Axelrod added, ‘even in his sort of quasi-apology last night, Mr. Limbaugh continued that falsehood, and it needs to be challenged.’…

“Axelrod said Obama ‘did the right thing’ in calling Fluke, and ‘I think what Rush Limbaugh said about that young woman was not only vile and degrading to her, but to women across the country.’”

***

“Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul said an apology by conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh to Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke for calling her a ‘slut’ and a ‘prostitute’ was not sincere, and was made only because it best served Limbaugh…

“‘He’s doing it because some people were taking their advertisements off of his program. It was his bottom line he was concerned about,’ Paul said…

“‘I don’t think he’s very apologetic,’ Paul said. ‘It’s in his best interest, that’s why he did it.’”

***

“What we are saying is that Mr. Limbaugh has abused his unique position within the conservative media to smear and vilify a citizen engaged in the exercise of her First Amendment rights, and in the process he debased a national political discourse that needs no further debasing. This is not the way a decent citizen behaves, much less a citizen who wields significant de facto power in a major political party. While Republican leaders owe no apology for Mr. Limbaugh’s comments, they do have a responsibility to repudiate them — and him…

“Incivility is not a one-way street in America. Far from it: Mr. Limbaugh’s left-wing equivalents have trashed any number of conservatives over the years. Conservatives have a point when they protest that the ‘mainstream media’ don’t always heed their legitimate grievances…

“For the good of U.S. political culture — or at least its own political self-interest — the GOP must distance itself from Mr. Limbaugh. In response to listener complaints and, apparently, the promptings of its own corporate conscience, Sleep Train Mattress Centers has quit advertising on Mr. Limbaugh’s show. Dare Republican leaders show less decency?”

***

“But if Limbaugh’s actions demand a boycott—and they do—then what about the army of swine on the left?

“[T]he grand pooh-bah of media misogyny is without a doubt Bill Maher—who also happens to be a favorite of liberals—who has given $1 million to President Obama’s super PAC. Maher has called Palin a ‘dumb twat’ and dropped the C-word in describing the former Alaska governor. He called Palin and Congresswoman Bachmann ‘boobs’ and ‘two bimbos.’ He said of the former vice-presidential candidate, ‘She is not a mean girl. She is a crazy girl with mean ideas.’ He recently made a joke about Rick Santorum’s wife using a vibrator. Imagine now the same joke during the 2008 primary with Michelle Obama’s name in it, and tell me that he would still have a job. Maher said of a woman who was harassed while breast-feeding at an Applebee’s, ‘Don’t show me your tits!’ as though a woman feeding her child is trying to flash Maher. (Here’s a way to solve his problem: don’t stare at a strangers’ breasts). Then, his coup de grâce: ‘And by the way, there is a place where breasts and food do go together. It’s called Hooters!’…

“This is not to suggest that liberals—or feminists—never complain about misogyny. Many feminist blogs now document attacks on women on the left and the right, including Jezebel, Shakesville, and the Women’s Media Center (which was cofounded by Steinem). But when it comes to high-profile campaigns to hold these men accountable—such as that waged against Limbaugh—the real fury seems reserved only for conservatives, while the men on the left get a wink and a nod as long as they are carrying water for the liberal cause.

“After all, if Limbaugh’s outburst is part of the ‘war on women,’ then what is the routine misogyny of liberal media men?”

***

“The tables have turned. Abortion used to be a matter of choice. Ditto birth control. But now that they have considerable political power, the erstwhile choice advocates want to take away the choice of dissenters to opt out.

“Choice is gone. Tolerance is musty memory. ‘Access’ is the new buzzword — and access means free. Under Obamacare, employer-paid health plans can charge women copayments for necessary and vital medical services if they are seriously ill, but birth control is free…

“What is more, Fluke asserted that if students have to go out and get their own birth control — because they chose to attend a Catholic institution — that hurts their grades. Therefore, Washington must force religious institutions to go against their deeply held beliefs and hand out birth control, if indirectly.

“Washington has accomplished a great leap, from a plea for choice to a roar of entitlement.”

***

“Barack Obama’s campaign to convince voters that ‘America is back’ is a dud, so they want everyone to look at the squirrel. When the media comes asking about Limbaugh, the Republican politician’s response ought to be: ‘I want to discuss the issues Americans actually care about — don’t you?’”

***

“When NBC’s Meet the Press host David Gregory brought up Limbaugh, Gingrich started shaking his head.

“‘I am astonished at the desperation of the elite media to avoid rising gas prices, to avoid a presidential apology to religious fanatics in Afghanistan, to avoid a trillion dollar deficit … and suddenly decide that Rush Limbaugh is the real national crisis this week,’ he said.”

There are Republicans supporting this senile old fart??

Southernblogger on March 4, 2012 at 8:37 PM

We have to stand behind Rush in this. He’s been taking abuse for the conservative cause for years and even if he made a tactical mistake here (which I am not convinced of yet – there may be more coming and will hold judgment to see how it plays out over the next few days) I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Patricia Heaton who is a known and out conservative had suspended herself from twitter for speaking up about Breitbart and also against the contraception BS. It’s relatively new and more will come out about the whys and whats, but if you look at twitter and her name you’ll see the abuse heaped.

We have to stand strong. The liberals are emboldened and we can’t throw aside one of our best spokesmen.

Who will be next if we do? Who will they go after next for “misspeaking”? Don’t let them win.

kim roy on March 4, 2012 at 8:38 PM

Southernblogger on March 4, 2012 at 8:37 PM

Well, it’s the truth, like it or lump it. Paul didn’t say that he didn’t have the right to say it, just that he’s not sorry – and he isn’t, nor does he need to be.

And your point? Why are you in such a hurry to start bowing down to what the liberal media has to say?

JPeterman on March 4, 2012 at 8:40 PM

My point is that endless whining about what the left does or does not get away with doesn’t excuse guys on our side from saying things like this.

If you don’t understand that our guys have to be better behaved than their guys and that’s just how it works, you need to pay attention to more than Rush’s three hours a day. We are heavily outgunned in the media, and the media will always put its thumb on the scales for the left.

And the people who insist that Rush was right both strategically (even though he martyred and elevated a know-nothing liberal activist to the Rosa Parks of contraception) and on the merits (even though he called a woman something that, if it was directed at a friend or relative of mine, would make me want to strangle the person who used it) are both completely wrong and living in an echo chamber. End of story.

The MSM gives their own pimps free passes and ignores their transgressions.

That’s the given.

You have to work within it.

To castigate swine like Maher for being obnoxious pigs is not served if you start going down their same slimy road.

Rush put one foot on that putrescent track … and wisely withdrew it.

So when does Obama apologize for Bill Maher, for every comment made about Sarah Palin and her family by leftists and every other foul comment on Daily Kos and Huffington?

Hening on March 4, 2012 at 8:45 PM

Its sad because Rush could be such a positive influence and he had to go give all the progressives and liberals fodder for months now – this will ultimately hurt the cause – nothing positive can come from this.

What we can make government do for people and what rights can we get from government like free birth control so that they will re-elect the gift givers and stop those who will take them away. All with the plan to give those gift only the chosen people to right all wrongs thought all of time.

“‘The lie was that somehow she was asking that taxpayers pay for contraception,’ Axelrod said on ABC’s This Week. ‘The policy is that in basic insurance policies, contraception — contraceptive services, birth control, should be included.’

Just working on this premise, then shouldn’t that be up to the insurance company to offer and the consumer to decide whether they want it or not? If you want BC to be covered, then find a like-minded insurer or the employer could DECIDE to negotiate with the insurance company for it if it’s important.

The issue is that no one, not people, not companies should be FORCED to offer an item.

It’s called the open market. Why is this a difficult concept?

kim roy on March 4, 2012 at 8:47 PM

I saw a cspan thing dated Nov 11 which was about Margret Sanger.

Fascinating. First the co-talker was a feminist who actually read a Santorum statement on birth control and society. There was agreement that Santorum would NOT be a contender

Okay…so here’s the deal. The left had this in their OPPO research. They were locked and loaded…if Santorum became a serious person they were ready. For eample…they did not release this in Nov. because it would not have done much good against 9 candidates.

They waited. And sure enough here comes Rick to challenge Romney. So barry pulls the trigger starting with Stephy…then the HHS ‘decision’ made by the ‘women’ of the administration (remember..the women thought is would be a women’s rights issue…that Trumped religion)

So they let it fly. And sure enough the USCCB reacted…(no doubt as predicted)…so barry had his backup plan…concede A LITTLE.

Meanwhile many in the R party melt down (as predicted). Nancy P moves in to up the pressure with a unofficial hearing (Fluke)

Bingo…Rush says something that can be used as LEVERAGE. The Rs are primitives.

So barry/nancy/Axe/et al. have had an especially good month. The left played their cards…the right played their role of Party Of STUPID…and the LEFT wins the YOUNG Female VOTE.

The reason this is important is Breitbart. The Left/DEM party is a party full of Breitbarts…okay. Get some dirt…play your cards and see what happens.

We are fighting against 100s of Breitbarts that have the full power of the press and $$$$$.

The R party is too stupid to get this. They don’t even oppo research their own people. The don’t look at their own people from the LEFT…they don’t strategize.

The country is deteriorating fast and the Party of Stupid is just…stupid

r keller on March 4, 2012 at 8:49 PM

Apologizing to liberals get one absolutely nothing. Nothing changes whatsoever of their opinion at all. There’s no bigger waste of time. Honestly, people really need to understand this.

Dongemaharu on March 4, 2012 at 8:50 PM

The left is setting the narrative. The left has no leg to stand on with their record over the last three years in the White House and the last 5 years in the Congress. We have had no budget for 3 years. We have no solid growth plan for energy production. Our President is apologizing to Afghanistan. Health care costs are going up. Scores of Doctors will soon be retiring and finding good care is becoming difficult. Obama’s plan is to tear his opponents to pieces. Drip by drip by drip. He has a dismal record. He is a socialist Marxist and the American people know it. So he is changing the conversation so women will be outraged that Republicans want to deny women their reproductive health. What a horrible man he is. He is evil. He takes Bible truths and twists them for his purposes. He is reprehensible. I cannot stand him. He, and all who follow him, and spew his lies, are despicable. The media are either all-in for him, or cowards, not speaking the truth. He, and they, must be defeated.

Rush Limbaugh deserves our support. He takes arrows from the left on a daily basis. We must fight.

Game on. Let’s go.

Get back to me when Bill Maher starts apologizing. O.K.???

JPeterman on March 4, 2012 at 8:35 PM

Bill Maher is a comedian

liberal4life on March 4, 2012 at 8:42 PM

And Rush is a radio host who comments on daily events, Maher is a political donor to Obama. I fail to see any meaningful distinction which gives the crude Maher leeway here but for one is a DNC operative who guises his schtick as “entertainment”.

If anything bot exist within the same field of work, from the Left and Right.

Seek help while you still have time………

dmann on March 4, 2012 at 8:54 PM

The biggest issue I have with Rush is he gave the media minions of the liberal party a great distraction from the despicable power grab by the President and his merry band of wiseguys.

The Democrats dug up this perfect political activist plant to bash Conservatives with, she’s no innocent as she’s being portrayed, she’s been in on the play from the beginning.

Ms Fluke is Cindy Sheehan, 2012 style.

She could and probably does get her birth control from the free clinic on Georgetown campus, free.
Which is probabaly why here college insurance doesn’t cover it.

Most liberals aren’t evil, but the liberal-ism that infects them and harms all of us, that is evil.

Speakup on March 4, 2012 at 8:54 PM

Does King GOld ever say anything but True Conservative? You not witty brother. Stop whining so much, save the sanctimony.

Dr. Tesla on March 4, 2012 at 8:54 PM

George Will has already ceded the 2012 elections. He has stocked up a years supply of adult diapers so he can continue to foul himself as he cowers from Left attacks.

I’m hoping that as well. Now that he has everyone’s attention he may use that ace.

If not and this was a mistake, I’m not willing to toss him under the bus for it. He’s earned that, at least from me.

kim roy on March 4, 2012 at 8:49 PM

I agree. Rush is the first that came upon the scene and has supported the Conservative Cause for years. He’s taken the heat all of that time and deserves all of our support. He’s done what the Republican House & Senate should have been doing. There is no way anyone should throw Rush under any bus. If we don’t stand up for those that stand up for us, then we are no better than the left and the pretenders.

bluefox on March 4, 2012 at 8:54 PM

Newt was excellent. “The president apologizes to Muslim extremists while he wages war with the Catholic Church.” Indeed.

When Newt is on his game, there’s none better.

Dee2008 on March 4, 2012 at 8:54 PM

Bill Maher is a comedian

liberal4life on March 4, 2012 at 8:42 PM

Liberal excuse for liberal a$$hole. If it hurts someone’s feelings, does it really matter the title of the person saying it? Liberal humor is just so low, juevenile, and coarse that I can’t believe someone with your high standards would defend him. It’s heartbreaking to me how you lower yourself to his level. He is an affront to all women, and if you were really a good person, you would repudiate him, pronto!

Night Owl on March 4, 2012 at 8:54 PM

Newt is the absolute “Master” handling the lib media, no one comes close. He is the right one for these times. Go!! Newt!!!

Tn.-Vol on March 4, 2012 at 8:55 PM

Maher is a comedian? Who knew.

jeanie on March 4, 2012 at 8:55 PM

KingGOld sounds like he cuts and pastes stuff from Media Matters on here. Why is it rational to hate Rush Limbaugh?

Dr. Tesla on March 4, 2012 at 8:55 PM

This apologize is not heartfelt and was only done for financial reasons.

liberal4life on March 4, 2012 at 8:47 PM

The same could be said about Madame Fluck.
Except the apology…or the heartfelt crap.

Electrongod on March 4, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Rush was right; crude but right. The idea that anyone, male or female would stand up and arrogantly demand that strangers be compelled by the federal government to subsidize and underwrite their sexual proclivities is beyond bizarre — in the not too distant past this girl would be undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. Around the world on a given day, Catholic Charities literally feed hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people who would otherwise have gone hungry. That this Fluke person would have the gall to stand up and demand that even the tiniest amount of resources be diverted her way for this purpose is unbelievable.

cynccook on March 4, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Are you saying we need to put the same level of scrutiny on comedians as well as political radio hosts?

liberal4life on March 4, 2012 at 8:57 PM

He only apologized because of the amount of sponsors he was losing.

This apologize is not heartfelt and was only done for financial reasons.

liberal4life on March 4, 2012 at 8:47 PM

Like when David Letterman apologized for essentially calling Willow Palin a slut?

NoLeftTurn on March 4, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Rush Limbaugh didn’t apologize because of the “liberal media,” as Ron Paul said he apologized because not doing so was hurting his bottom line. If you believe in the “free market” then you believe it is the right of advertisers to pull support if they feel their product would be hurt by association. Maher is right, his show *isn’t* subject to sponsors and therefore he has more freedom. Its capitalism, kind of what you all are always arguing is the most rational system for structuring society.

libfreeordie on March 4, 2012 at 8:58 PM

Every Republican should answer like Newt when asked about this farce.

lilredhen on March 4, 2012 at 8:40 PM

redmama on March 4, 2012 at 8:58 PM

You know society, the country, and the world have sunk to new lows when you have to apologize to a whore for calling her a slut.

Wolfmoon on March 4, 2012 at 8:58 PM

Bill Maher is a comedian

liberal4life on March 4, 2012 at 8:42 PM

What business is Rush in?

KOOLAID2 on March 4, 2012 at 8:58 PM

I haven’t heard anybody deny that Fluke does have an amazing amount of sex if she’s spending 3000 dollars in 3 years on it. What do you call a woman like that? Is there any label we can use?

Dr. Tesla on March 4, 2012 at 8:58 PM

Are you saying we need to put the same level of scrutiny on comedians as well as political radio hosts?

liberal4life on March 4, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Bill Cosby is a comedian. Lisa Lampanelli is a comedian. Louis CK is a comedian. Leftists all, but the purpose of their performances is not serious political commentary.

Bill Maher is not a comedian. Like Jon Stewart, he’s a political commentator. Which means that when he says terrible things he needs to be called on it.

KingGold on March 4, 2012 at 8:59 PM

I hope Rush enjoys crow with a side of humble pie.

He stepped in it big-time. It shouldn’t have taken him three days to apologized.

KingGold on March 4, 2012 at 8:33 PM

fixed

cableguy615 on March 4, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Damn… I can’t get the Gingrich video to play. Even so… what Newt said.
-
O’Barry apologized to a bunch of vile animals that will stone a woman to death if she is of loose moral virtue… because someone burned the book that tells them to stone women for having loose virtue…
-
That’s the line Rush should have drawn after first making sure all cameras were on him. That and read a few quotes from 2008 about Palin that were passed on by MSM, only put M.O.s name in there.
-
In other words… spike the damn ball!

RalphyBoy on March 4, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Where were these sensitive lefties and even more sensitive moderate republicans when Bill Maher called Palin a “C**t?

Where was Debbie Blabbermouth Shultz when David Letterman made a sex joke about Sarah Palin’s then 13 year old daughter Willow getting knocked up by a New York Yankee?

Were was David Gregory when his fellow NBC employee Ed Shultz called Laura Ingraham a “Slut?” How many times did he ask anyone on the left or in the administration to repudiated Shultz? Shultz was forced to apologize, but no one on the left put the pressure on him.

Where was President Obama when Kathy Griffin called then 19 year old Bristol Palin and “Tramp?’

Where were these sensitive lefties and moderate Republicans when comics made fun of Trig Palin’s condition? Or when one of their heroes, Andrew Sullivan, repeatedly put out ridiculous assertions that Trig is not really Sarah’s son?

Where were any of these people when James Carville said of Paula Jones, “Drag a five dollar bill through a trailer park and that’s what you get.”

Look how quickly they buried the JFK 19 year old intern Mimi Alford’s report of JFK coaxing her to give a friend of his or sex while he watched?

How long did the mainstream media hide the fact that Jon Edwards had a child outside his marriage before the National Enquirer finally forced the issue? Does anyone really think that no one in the big media knew until the Enquirer spilled the beans?

The list of this kind of thing from the left can go on for pages, and is almost always ignored or buried by the press and the leftists.

How long did the left let Anthony Weiner get away with lying through his teeth – even with photographic evidence against him. In fact Weiner is in talks for a show on CNN. Whoremonger Eliot Spitzer already has a show.

What Rush said may, or may not, have been a bridge too far. As he has apologized, clearly Rush himself has had second thoughts. The fact is that leftists get away with behaviors and statements far more offensive all of the time.

It is only the right that throws it’s own under the bus so willingly and without a defense.

I see that once again Hotair.com is linking to Mediaite.com, which is a dishonest, biased, leftwing promoter of MSNBC and MediaMatters.

Here’s a clue for the people running Hotair…Colby Hall, the person responsible for making Mediaite a far-left mouthpiece for MSNBC is right now an executive at Rush Limbaugh’s employer, Clear Channel.

Got that?

The guy who used Mediaite to print numerous anti-Rush Limbaugh blog postings is now an executive at the radio channel that carries Rush Limbaugh’s show.

How long do you think it is going to take before Clear Channel all the sudden drops Rush and makes Colby Hall a very happy man?
