Sebelius: Reduction in pregnancies compensates for the cost of contraception

posted at 5:36 pm on March 2, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius yesterday assured a House panel that the contraception mandate will actually pay for itself.

“Who pays for it? There’s no such thing as a free service,” [Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Tim] Murphy asked.

Sebelius responded that that is not the case with insurance.

“The reduction in the number of pregnancies compensates for cost of contraception,” Sebelius answered.

Murphy expressed surprise by the answer.

“So you are saying, by not having babies born, we are going to save money on health care?” Murphy asked.

Sebelius replied, “Providing contraception is a critical preventive health benefit for women and for their children.”

Murphy again sought clarification.

“Not having babies born is a critical benefit. This is absolutely amazing to me. I yield back,” he said.

As Kentucky Republican Rep. Brad Guthrie pointed out, if Sebelius is correct, it’s curious that more insurance companies don’t already cover contraception. If it makes money for health insurance companies to cover it, why don’t they already do so voluntarily?

More importantly, Sebelius’ comments show an alarming disregard for the value of human life and hints at a desire for population control. Still, Sebelius wants to talk about the population in economic terms? Let’s talk about it. Does she understand that we’re headed toward an entitlement crisis, fueled in part by too many retirees to be supported by too few workers? If the U.S. has any kind of population problem, it’s that our population is not growing fast enough to support our entitlement state. Think that’s a stretch? For what it’s worth, Mark Steyn doesn’t.

Or will coverage for those treatments be mandated without being subject to co-pays and deductibles too?

So I take it Sebelius thinks the retirements of all the baby boomers are going to take care of themselves?

Newsflash Kathleen: Young people reduce the risk pool, and young people pay into the system more than they take out over their lifetimes. The longest view is obvious: More humans are required to fund your preferred kind of socialist state. A reduction in pregnancies is thus entirely antithetical to any long term cutting of any health care related cost.

She LIED repeatedly to the IRS!!! Do you actually expect she’ll tell the truth to the American people?????
She’s an unethical, lying, reprobate d-cRAT socialist TAX CHEAT. But then, aren’t they all?

Yep, in d-cRAT socialist FANTASYLAND there are NO COSTS to manufacture any contraception items, there are NO COSTS for packaging any contraception items, there are NO COSTS for distributing any contraception items, there are NO COSTS for visiting a doctor for any contraception prescription, there are NO COSTS for a pharmacist to dispense any contraception items…it’s all FREE, FREE, FREE in lunatic-left d-cRAT socialist FANTASYLAND – just like all that FREE taxpayer money given to crony capitalists, PIGFORD crooks, and the bailouts, pork and countless other socialist welfare boondoggles/taxpayer-ripoffs.

It’s really a good thing that the we have the smartest and best people available running this government. Just think, all this time insurance companies couldn’t figure out that NOT giving away contraceptives was costing them money.

Just think of all the other ways this administration can help out the dolts at the insurance companies. For example, think how much money they’d save by closing their doors and letting all their employees go.

retiredeagle on March 2, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Tina, you are introducing a red herring here with your remark about whether we need more people or fewer. That wasn’t the question. The question Secy. Sebelius answered was whether it was cost-effective for insurance companies to cover contraception. Her answer is that yes, it is, because if insurance companies don’t cover contraception then their insured population is going to have more babies (which, from the point of view of the insurance company, means more costs for prenatal care, delivery, complications with birth for a certain percentage of the women in question, and then health care costs for the child, who tends to be covered under the parents’ plan). I don’t know the actual statistics, so I don’t know if her analysis is factually correct, but it’s not at all inconceivable that it would make financial sense for health insurance companies to provide contraception for free. (Maybe that’s why mine does.)

Whether babies are cute and whether we need more of them is a totally different issue.

Sebelius’ argument assumes that most unwanted pregancies occur because women can’t afford contraceptives. That is pure liberal fantasy.

According to surveys of women who’ve had unplanned/unwanted pregnancies, approximately 90% state that their pregnancy resulted from something other than lack of access to/inability to afford contraceptives. They cite reasons such as: they believed they could not get pregnant, they didn’t like using contraceptives, they had contraceptives but forgot to use them, etc.

So even if the government succeeds in forcing employers to provide women with “free” contraceptives, 90% of unwanted pregnancies are still going to happen — and insurance companies (i.e., insurance consumers) are still going to have to pay for the medical costs associated with those pregnancies (on top of paying for all the “free” contraceptives).

Bristol got pregnant and had her baby. She didn’t abort it. Her message was to young women about the difficulties of bearing children early in life, not about aborting them. And let’s not forget that Obama endorsed partial birth abortions. You know what that is?

This means there will be no “savings” when those women (and all the other women ALREADY USING contraceptives) start using the “free” government cheese contraceptives.

There will be no savings, just transfered costs to the “evil” insurance companies who will just have to increase what they charge…only fools believe in a free lunch/something for nothing…don’t be that guy(gal).

That figure about Catholic women simply is fabricated, probably by Nancy Pelosi. She says she is Catholic, but believe me, she is NOT. I am Catholic and I know a true Catholic when I read/see/hear one. She doesn’t fit.

Free.

It sounds so good until you realize that NOTHING is free.

And if all these people are going to get free birth control for their health, why do I have to pay for vitamins and a gym fee? Those are for my health too. Why aren’t they covered and free?

UnderstandingisPower on March 2, 2012 at 6:15 PM

I’m really pissed at Allstate for refusing to pay for the new tires on my truck. If the bald tires on now blow out on the highway, the cost to them will be far greater.

slickwillie2001 on March 2, 2012 at 7:18 PM

If it makes money for health insurance companies to cover it, why don’t they already do so voluntarily?

Because people pay for it themselves, so why should the insurance company cover it?

For example, it probably saves money to have a yearly physical, but I don’t see the need for the insurance company to provide gas money or taxi fare to the clinic.

I see meatheadinCA (nuff said) never responded…..mmmmmmm…imagine that! Hope you are well Dire! I continue to revert back to

2 Chronicles 7:14
14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

THIS is where I am finding peace….LORD, have mercy on us. As Lot said about sodom and gomorha (sp?) “If there are but 10 honest people, will you not spare the city”? (paraphrasing)

sicoit on March 2, 2012 at 7:21 PM

Of course this is nonsense. Sort of like the Obama’s EPA saying that removing microscopic amounts of particulates will cost only 10 billion, but will save 90 billion. Sure. One is real dollars, likely estimated far lower than real, the other is pretend dollars that can never be measured.
Sebilius’s silly remark is predicated on the nation and Mexico’s birthrate dramatically. Why Mexico? Because illegals bear 300,000 babies every year in American facilities.(btw, this figure has not decreased making a lie out of the Administrations claim that illegal entry has slowed down).
It is unlikely that birth control has anything to do with birthrate in America. The Mexicans will still come over for the anchor babies, birth control is already available to anyone who wants it.
I think liberals, particulary Sebilius, do not care if the lie is proven. It is just another way to destroy Christianity and impose her version of totalitarianism. Everyone in Kansas knows she is a nut who has steadily become nutier.

Another logical problem with Sebellius’ point Tina: she is basing it on the false premise that women, before this law, didn’t have access to contraception. We know that is not true and that contraceptives (all the way from condoms to the pill), have been more than widely available for every woman (and even some for men) all the way from very expensive to super cheap or even free (Planned Parenthood anyone?). So, if with all the access to contraceptives as we have had we have such problems with unwanted pregnancies, what makes Sebellius think anything will change now that they are “free” and (really) just as available as they were before?

Insanity all the way, and once again the big government types creating a false issue in order to come up with a solution that is not needed.

And let’s not forget the framing of all of this as some sort of “disease” that women cannot escape and thus must be protected from. I guess feminists encourage female empowerment for women to take control of their lives… except when it comes to sex apparently. “Don’t get pregnant girls, but don’t say NO to offers of sex (or demand the man to take responsibility as well with the protection or the outcome). You will be so fulfilled in the end…”

For any who doubt the “death panels” in Obamacare, just listen to the calloused manner in which these folks discuss fundamental life questions.

Isn’t there a savings of a lot more by the death panels?
How about the reductions in Medicare costs by using the same methodology of the Netherlands (a nice socialist country, where one of five is euthanized-one of eleven involuntarily by doctors, much like the 1930′s Germany did to its own citizens)

Then, killing off those old folks will close that old Social Security problem…

Then, all those old folks have the money which will be estate taxed away by the Government (why do you think they’ve conditioned voter to the envy card?)

Then again, most conservatives are old folks , so the death panels are not only the final solution to the economy, but there’s almost a guaranteed leftist winner in every election.
Think not? You’re not paying attention to what they’re doing…

I think the saving grace for us is that the military would reuse orders to fire on us citizens.
