Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on March 1, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

When Barack Obama offered an apology to Hamid Karzai over the Koran-burning incident, I supported it as a cost-free attempt to cool things down, in an environment where we clearly need to remain a while to meet our objectives. It obviously didn’t work, as two US Army officers got fragged by an Afghan soldier three days later, and  a NATO base got attacked by a suicide bomber four days later.  Two more American soldiers were shot today by an Afghan soldier, in fact.  Riots and violence have continued unabated and the Taliban are using the incident as a recruiting tool.  Still, an apology was worth a try, even if it failed to prevent violence and reprisals.

Of course, it helps to recognize that the apology didn’t work.  Yesterday, Obama claimed that it had “calmed things down“:

President Obama said his formal apology to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Korans by U.S. troops last week has “calmed things down” after the incident sparked an outbreak of violence across the country.

By what measure?  I agree with his rationale in offering it — “what is going to best protect our folks and make sure that they can accomplish their mission” — but his February 23rd apology didn’t calm anything down, which is obvious from the continuing eruptions of violence.

Sounds like we need a visit from our friend Chip Diller to explain this one:

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I see his incompetence is on full diplay again. I question his handlers allowing him to continue in this manner, then I remembered that the MSM has his back and somehow spin this as a positive. Unfrickenbelievable.

Naturally Curly on March 1, 2012 at 8:22 AM

I supported it as a cost-free attempt to cool things down, in an environment where we clearly need to remain a while to meet our objectives.

What objectives are we even close to meeting in Afghanistan/Pakistan? It only makes sense to stay there if we can accomplish something and all evidence is to the contrary. I don’t see us meeting a single objective so it is time to seriously think about leaving. At least some of the accounts include one of the shooter as being a literacy teacher employed by the United States to teach Afghani soldiers to read and write. It seems to me if the animals are not even appreciative enough of efforts to bring them literacy, they should be left to wallow in their own backwardsness without further intervention from the West.

As to the apology from the jug-eared idiot. Apologies are a sign of weakness in that part of the world. Already, thanks to Obama, the head of the UN in Afghanistan is calling for public trials and punishment of the soldiers who burned those Korans. Even Obama isn’t so stupid as to really turn over American soldiers to these animals for “Afghan justice” but this is also part and parcel of having an American President grovel before this nations enemies.

Exit question: Just how many American lives are going to be lost for this “cost free” attempt to cool things down? The body count so far is six. However well meaning, apologizing was a stupid idea from the beginning and never should have happened.

Happy Nomad on March 1, 2012 at 8:22 AM

TimBuk3 on March 1, 2012 at 8:23 AM

The problem with Obama’s apology is it did not give the reason for the confiscation and destruction of the Korans. If it had the fault and blame would be with the prisoners who desicrated the religious booksand not with the library officials.

Obama was so quick to apologize, I don’t think the violence had yet gone beyond a few loud marches. So one could argue his apology led to the violence. (not saying it did by the way)

When will we see one of the HotAir hosts acknowledge that Barack Hussein Obama recited the Shahada in Arabic?

Barack knows exactly what the Shahada means, and he knows how the Muslim world interprets that action. When a person recites the Shahada in Arabic, the Muslim world considers them a Muslim.

It is a fact that Barack Hussein Obama recited the Shahada in Arabic to New York Times reporter Nicholas Kristof.

ITguy on March 1, 2012 at 8:27 AM

The “opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer” are the Shahada, the Muslim confession of faith.

Speak those words in Arabic and, as Jazz Shaw noted:

POOF! You’re a Muslim!

If that’s true for Jeff on the TLC show, and for Muslims world-wide, why wouldn’t it be true for Barack Hussein Obama?

ITguy on March 1, 2012 at 8:27 AM

They apply Goebbels’ “big lie” theory to every single thing they say.

tommyboy on March 1, 2012 at 8:29 AM

Obama knows exactly what the Shahada means, and he knows exactly what the Muslim world thinks of someone who recites it in Arabic. And he knows that they will write off his claims of “I am a Christian” as being merely Taqiyya.

The truth of Obama’s faith matters, given that he said this about his faith:

But my journey is part of a larger journey – one shared by all who’ve ever sought to apply the values of their faith to our society. It’s a journey that takes us back to our nation’s founding, when none other than a UCC church inspired the Boston Tea Party and helped bring an Empire to its knees.

Radical Ground Zero Mosque Imam: Obama’s Cairo Speech to Muslim World Came From Me
Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 10:40 PM
**********************************

Well that’s just swell.
The radical imam who said the US is worse than Al-Qaeda, boasted to reporters last year that he provided the blue print for Obama’s apology speech to the Muslim world.

In his June 2009 speech Obama apologized for America and for imposing democracy in the Muslim World.
Special Guests reported:

The Shoebat Foundation has obtained a shocking audio recording of Rauf’s own voice boasting in Arabic that Obama’s historic speech in Cairo was provided by the Imam’s work with the Cordova Initiative in what the Imam called “The Blue Print” which, according to him, was the solution to the Islamic-American divide. Rauf claimed that Chapter 6 of the Imam’s work engineered by the Cordova Initiative was the construct for the entire speech:

As others have said, apologies and groveling are signs of weakness in that part of the world. I think an explination that the korans were burned because they were already defaced with Jihadist communications and sticking to his guns may have prevented (or at least mitigated) the violence that’s erupting now. At least he would’ve gained a little respect.

Hey, why are “True Believers” not rising up in protest against the people who desecrated the Korans in the first place – by writing notes all over them?

Deuteronomy 4:2 – Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish [ought] from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Oh wait, do they not follow the Bible? But, I thought they were based on the Bible. Hmmm, perhaps they are a bit confused?

1 Corinthians 14:33 – For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Cost free? There is always a cost to be borne when the leader of the US apologizes. This time we paid with our credibility and dignity.

in an environment where we clearly need to remain a while to meet our objectives.

What objectives?

Still, an apology was worth a try, even if it failed to prevent violence and reprisals.

No, it really wasn’t. It displayed a lack of courage, dignity, and self-respect.

You all need to calm down. Barry said that this was the right war, the just war, and unlike Iraq, the war we had to win. The poor helpless Afghan people are suffering so under the autocratic rule of the Taliban, and they are helpless. Just look at them pleading for our help as they march in unison in the streets. They are just calling out to us for assistance, using bullets in the back of the heads of our officers as their calling card.

Like Newt so clearly stated, they just need to live their own miserable lives. We need to leave them to their devices and just lob some bombs over there every few years to keep them down. They are truly ignorant, miserable, and undeserving of our assistance. If HK is the best they got, what the hell are we doing there?
