Breaking: RIP, Andrew Breitbart; Update: Collapsed while taking a walk near home

posted at 9:16 am on March 1, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Terrible news from our friends at Big Journalism, confirmed by Ben Howe on Twitter:

Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.

We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.

Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.

I can’t say that I knew Andrew well, but I knew him enough to know that we have lost a stalwart fighter.  Andrew and I laughed together, debated together, occasionally disagreed together, and all of this passionately and memorably.  Andrew could be many things, sometimes concurrently, but he could never be ignored.

In some ways, Andrew was our Merry Prankster.  He was willing to take risks and look foolish in order to make a point or win an argument, with more courage than most would muster.  No one who saw it will ever forget how he seized the podium at Anthony Weiner’s press conference and demanded vindication from media outlets who had been disparaging him and defending Weiner when the former Congressman got caught literally with his pants down.  Few men have had the kind of impact Andrew did in such a short time, and he leaves behind a media empire that is still gaining strength.

I’m stunned that such a relatively young man has been taken from us at what appeared to be the peak of his life.  We will miss you, Andrew.  I will miss you — your energy, your boldness, and your many unremarked kindnesses to fellow conservatives.  Godspeed.

Update: Just remembered this great interview with Andrew from a little over a year ago on the Pigford settlement story.  I took this in the hallway of a conference in San Diego, and I basically just pointed the camera at him, asked him a single question, and Andrew did the rest.

Update: When a man as young as Andrew passes, everyone wonders how it could have happened.  According to Andrew’s father-in-law Orson Bean, he collapsed while taking a stroll near his home, and couldn’t be revived:

Breitbart was walking near his home in Brentwood, Calif just after midnight Thursday when he collapsed according to his father-in-law Orson Bean. Someone saw Breitbart fall and called 911. Emergency crews tried to revive him and rushed him to the emergency room at UCLA Medical Center, Bean said.

He is survived by his wife Susannah Bean Breitbart, 41, and four children.

Terribly sad.  Again, keep Susannah and the children in your prayers today.

Breitbart was a brave patriot cut down too soon. I loved that we had Andrew on our side.

Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. (James 4:14)

I am shocked and dismayed. He was so young and courageous.

Rest in Peace, my friend. Rest in Peace.

DuctTapeMyBrain on March 1, 2012 at 9:28 AM

Truly, truly, terrible news. Breitbart was a great patriot who exposed as much corruption and hypocrisy as anyone in this era. He was a good man and a courageous man who never let the fear of reprisal or intimidation stop him from choosing the difficult and righteous path.

Rest in peace Andrew Breitbart, you will be sorely missed.

Unreal, simply unreal. This is a huge blow to the conservative movement. But we have to soldier on with his work, pick up the baton and move forward. One of us has fallen but the cause continues. His legacy should live on through our actions and deeds.

WordsMatter on March 1, 2012 at 9:29 AM

43 years old, of natural causes????? WTF! Is this the 7th century?

Muletrain on March 1, 2012 at 9:25 AM

A good friend of ours, who was 42, a father of four, and in decent shape (not overweight), passed away in his sleep last September, from a heart attack. It happens.

Ward Cleaver on March 1, 2012 at 9:29 AM

This is terrible, awful news.

My greatest fear now is that there are damn few others who could take his place as the “Loudest, Rightest Voice In The Room.”

Thanks for everything, Andy. At least now nobody’s going to bust your balls about shaving. :-)

Wine_N_Dine on March 1, 2012 at 9:30 AM

RIP Andrew Breitbart, and comfort to his loved ones.

Freaky story time: several times when I saw footage of Mr. Breitbart speaking I kept thinking to myself, “Who does he remind me of? His mannerisms, the way he talks, remind me of someone I know. . .”

I finally figured it out after the Anthony Weiner press conference. He reminded me of a close friend going back to high school, the drummer in a band I was in, actually. Someone I’d remained close with into young adulthood, but had interacted with less and less over the last decade.

Now, here’s the freaky part. The reason it was so hard for me to place the connection was that my close friend died a couple of years ago.

He died unexpectedly, supposedly of natural causes, and (to us) somewhat mysteriously. He was also 43, so this is really disturbing and weird to me right now.

Is there some weird, subconscious way that we sense the internal parallels between people?

I’ll miss Mr. Brietbart’s work, but I didn’t know him personally. But this all has me missing my friend again.

This is the guy that said he had videos that would change the election a few weeks ago at CPAC right?

To say this is shocking is an understatement. A loss for all of us. This man was a true patriot.

lynncgb on March 1, 2012 at 9:30 AM

Breitbart – 2/10/12 CPAC:

“You want a unity speech; I’ll give you a unity speech. I don’t care who the candidate is and I haven’t since the beginning of this. I haven’t. Ask not what a candidate can do for you, ask what you can do for the candidate. And that’s what the Tea Party is. We are there to confront them on behalf of our candidate. I will march behind whoever our candidate is because if we don’t we lose. There are two paths: One is America, and the other one is Occupy. One is America, the other one is Occupy. I don’t care…

…Anyone who’s willing to stand next to me and fight the Progressive Left, I will be in that bunker, and if you’re not in that bunker because you’re not satisfied with this candidate, more than shame on you, you’re on the other side.”

Ugh…what sadness I’m feeling. For someone I never met.

Andrew was so fearless, entertaining and real. He was what everyone wants to be but is afraid to. How many people do you know would rollerblade into enemy territory and with just his words make the opposition cowardly run away. Andrew did and that’s why we loved him.

He was one of those guys you couldn’t get enough of and never wanted to. He will be so missed.
