Breaking: RIP, Andrew Breitbart; Update: Collapsed while taking a walk near home

posted at 9:16 am on March 1, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Terrible news from our friends at Big Journalism, confirmed by Ben Howe on Twitter:

Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.

We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.

Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.

I can’t say that I knew Andrew well, but I knew him enough to know that we have lost a stalwart fighter.  Andrew and I laughed together, debated together, occasionally disagreed together, and all of this passionately and memorably.  Andrew could be many things, sometimes concurrently, but he could never be ignored.

In some ways, Andrew was our Merry Prankster.  He was willing to take risks and look foolish in order to make a point or win an argument, with more courage than most would muster.  No one who saw it will ever forget how he seized the podium at Anthony Weiner’s press conference and demanded vindication from media outlets who had been disparaging him and defending Weiner when the former Congressman got caught literally with his pants down.  Few men have had the kind of impact Andrew did in such a short time, and he leaves behind a media empire that is still gaining strength.

I’m stunned that such a relatively young man has been taken from us at what appeared to be the peak of his life.  We will miss you, Andrew.  I will miss you — your energy, your boldness, and your many unremarked kindnesses to fellow conservatives.  Godspeed.

Update: Just remembered this great interview with Andrew from a little over a year ago on the Pigford settlement story.  I took this in the hallway of a conference in San Diego, and I basically just pointed the camera at him, asked him a single question, and Andrew did the rest.

Update: When a man as young as Andrew passes, everyone wonders how it could have happened.  According to Andrew’s father-in-law Orson Bean, he collapsed while taking a stroll near his home, and couldn’t be revived:

Breitbart was walking near his home in Brentwood, Calif just after midnight Thursday when he collapsed according to his father-in-law Orson Bean. Someone saw Breitbart fall and called 911. Emergency crews tried to revive him and rushed him to the emergency room at UCLA Medical Center, Bean said.

He is survived by his wife Susannah Bean Breitbart, 41, and four children.

Terribly sad.  Again, keep Susannah and the children in your prayers today.

Brietbart didn’t kill an innocent person and then plot with lawyers how that might affect his political career while she drowned.
Kennedy did.
I know it’s hard for you to tease out of his comment, but try harder. Mkay?

I guess killers like Laura Bush are ok, right patriot?

KeninCT on March 1, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Laura Bush didn’t leave the scene of the accident to consult with political advisers and lawyers. She contacted authorities. It was a horrible accident.

Kennedy was a reckless drunk who flipped a car off a bridge, left the drowning passenger in the car for a day before going back to get her, and felt it was more important to find out how he could worm out of it politically than it was to save her life.

Details, right?

sesquipedalian on March 1, 2012 at 11:34 AM

You would have a much better argument if you could find additional examples of Breitbart going off like this when other people died. You’re assuming that just because he did this once (to a person who anyone except a brain-dead Democrat would admit was no Saint) he’s done it to others.

Did Breitbart ever tweet making fun of Teddy Kennedy’s health issues in the year or so leading up to his death? If he did so, your “case” against him would be greatly enhanced. In fact, credible evidence of AB actively cheering on Kennedy’s final illness (like many on your side did with the late Tony Snow) would give you an air tight case.

Death toll, due to Breitbart’s actions, and lack of other actions one normally takes when directly responsible for a horrible event.

Zero.

Own it, you piece of human trash. Come back anytime you want to compare the actions of a third degree murderer/serial molester to Breitbart.

Breitbart talking trash about a dead Kennedy: no problem

freshface talking trash about dead Breitbart: problem

So that’s how it is

Dave Rywall on March 1, 2012 at 11:45 AM

That reminds me of another wonderful example of the Left:

From the Huffington Post’s Melissa Lafsky, The Footnote Speaks: What Would Mary Jo Kopechne Have Thought of Ted’s Career?:

Mary Jo wasn’t a right-wing talking point or a negative campaign slogan. She was a dedicated civil rights activist and political talent with a bright future — granted, whenever someone dies young, people sermonize about how he had a “bright future” ahead of him — but she actually did. She wasn’t afraid to defy convention (28 and unmarried, oh the horror!) or create her own career path based on her talents. She lived in Georgetown (where I grew up) and loved the Red Sox (we’ll forgive her for that). Then she got in a car driven by a 36-year-old senator with an alcohol problem and a cauldron full of demons, and wound up a controversial footnote in a dynasty.

We don’t know how much Kennedy was affected by her death, or what she’d have thought about arguably being a catalyst for the most successful Senate career in history. What we don’t know, as always, could fill a Metrodome.

Still, ignorance doesn’t preclude a right to wonder. So it doesn’t automatically make someone (aka, me) a Limbaugh-loving, aerial-wolf-hunting NRA troll for asking what Mary Jo Kopechne would have had to say about Ted’s death, and what she’d have thought of the life and career that are being (rightfully) heralded.

Who knows — maybe she’d feel it was worth it.

He took criticism for he said and you (and others) are taking criticism for what you say. That’s how it works, the big difference is that Mr. Brietbart didn’t try to rationalize what he said, it was the truth as he saw it, why do you feel compelled to produce tit or tats don’t you believe what you say?

what a terrible loss of such a loud, powerful person, a bold fighter. he always stood up for what he believed in and never backed down even though he had so many haters!! you will be missed, andrew. prayers for friends and family. hard to believe he’s just gone so quickly.

but i wouldn’t just assume someone killed him. when i heard he suddenly collapsed, i immediately thought “must be some kind of heart problem or something.” high blood pressure and heart issues are such a common problem among people, and you don’t even have to be elderly. the guy was just 43. he had some extra weight on him and plus, with so many haters attacking him constantly, he’s probably stressed out and plus, very busy, look at his twitter, @andrewbreitbart always an energetic fighter, up till the very end. it’s depressing. ugh.

Might be a heart attack. Especially if he ate like Dick Cheney.

Probably drank himself to death

I’m afraid I can’t be quite so polite where Breitbart is concerned . . .This isn’t just a matter of political differences. Folks, this guy man deliberately (and repeatedly) set out to destroy people for no good reason whatsoever. As far as I’m concerned, it’s good riddance to bad rubbish!

there are just some people who are out-and-out evil, who will never reform, never change, and will willfully do horrible things to others. Men who do these things need to be stopped–even if it never happens in real life.

Sometimes I imagine the Dick Cheneys, the Karl Roves, Grover Norquists, James Dobsons and other morally condemned people were truly gone, and what amazing things could happen with them gone. A true flushing out of the evil genes in the world could be all we need for a future better than what we have now.

If there is even an iota of redemptive DNA in their bodies, it’s one thing. But some of these people are as sick as sociopaths we see articles about every day. Sick and twisted bastards, for whom there is nothing worth saving in the end.

I was always taught to never say anything about the dead unless you could say something good. So I’ll jst say “He’s dead? GOOD!”

Well now he’ll learn to lie correctly for once.

a wasted life spent trying to destroy others with lies and mistruths….

Amazing, and yet Rush continues to live at whatever age he is.

So long, jerk. Good riddance to vile rubbish.

And they’re just getting started.

I’ve been working on a plumbing problem (and I’m no plumber) all morning and just saw this news. I’ve read through the last page of comments and have seen the usual trolls making stupid comments.

What shocks me is that he was 43 and just dropped dead. I thought he was over the top every now and then but a guy the conservative movement needed. I read a comment from A Huffington and was pleasantly surprised.

“I was asked many times this morning for my thoughts on what Andrew meant to the political world, but all I can think of at the moment is what Andrew meant to me as a friend, starting from when we worked together,” Arianna Huffington wrote in an email to Yahoo News. “His passion, his exuberance, his fearlessness. And above all, what I’m thinking of at the moment is his amazing wife Susie and their four beautiful young children. My love and thoughts are with them right now.”

I wasn’t aware he helped start The Huffington Post. Prayers for his wife and children.

Vince on March 1, 2012 at 12:08 PM

Andrew Breitbart was a driving force that helped to pave a venue for non traditional conservative minded people to speak their mind. For that I truly thank him and sites like Hot Air for all they do. He took a lot of hits from all sides in the process. He did not curl up in a corner and cower…. he fought when need be, and apologized when wrong.

Convictions…. Live it and don’t hide it. May he rest peacefully in heavenly arms. May his family and friends feel comfort.

We are all stunned and saddened by the news of Andrew Breitbart’s passing. Andrew was a warrior who stood on the side of what was right. He defended what was right. He defended the defenseless.

It is so sad to consider his four young children who have lost their dad. All our prayers are with his family now. May God comfort his wife and children.

Many of us will have life-long memories of our work or encounters with Andrew. May we draw on those to help forward the cause of fighting for what is right. For me, just one of those memories was in Pella, Iowa, last year after the premier of “The Undefeated.” Andrew held court in the restaurant at the local hotel talking about his favorite topic: how “culture is upstream of politics” and how conservatives must be unafraid to fight the leftwing media, cultural, and political establishments. The loss of his voice in this fight will be deeply felt, but thankfully his work lives on at his “Bigs,” and thank God for his inspiration and leadership.

God bless you, Andrew. Rest in peace, friend. We will continue the fight.

R.I.P. A terrible loss.

Noooo…. You believe – and think – incorrectly.

Dante on March 1, 2012 at 12:00 PM

OK, but there were a lot of Lefties that were claiming that old Ruppie murdered Sean Hoare.

I am not into conspiracies. I actually believe that Lee Harvey Oswald killed John F Kennedy, which is more than one can sort of say for Robert F Kennedy, Jr. (Read the thread and you’ll wonder if these people were in comas in 1963).

If someone on the Left on the level of Breitbart came out and said that he had tapes of a Republican president and that POTUS would try to take him out and then 2 weeks later, the guy drops dead, you would go “Hmmmm…..” even for a split second. I know that I would.

Resist We Much on March 1, 2012 at 12:12 PM

god forbid someone might call him a pile of human excrement. that’d be just mean, wouldn’t it?

sesquipedalian on March 1, 2012 at 11:26 AM

.
It’s also mean to call a black man “Grand Wizard.” Remember? I do, you should.

Who are they gonna get to deliver the eulogy at your funeral, Don Rickles?

M240H on March 1, 2012 at 12:13 PM

Has anyone heard why Breitbart never released whatever supposedly-embarrassing video he claimed to have of President Obama’s college years? Has there ever been any indication as to how any of that could be relevant?

Try as I might –and maybe I just lack imagination– I can’t think of anything one might do or say while a college student that could be considered politically devastating to a middle-aged president three decades after the fact. Some radical-sounding musings from a young man just learning how the world works? Some racially-untoward remarks from a guy still trying to get a handle on his own mixed-race heritage?

Lord knows I cringe at the thought of a video record of some of my own regrettable actions and/or comments from my college years. If Breitbart was telling the truth about this footage and his people decide to release it someday, I expect that reaction to it will fall strictly along existing political lines.

RIP, Andrew.

Unfortunately, the left is filled with hatred. So much for “tolerance” and “compromise.” On the bright side, their hatred is very clear for all to see.

Kingfisher on March 1, 2012 at 12:14 PM

I have no words. I only knew Andrew from his speeches, and media persona but i am devastated. He was the kind of warrior that only comes around one in a lifetime. There is no replacing him or what he did for the cause of freedom.

I am truly as sad as is possible at the loss of someone I did not know personally.

God Speed Andrew. You are missed already.

Dave Rywall on March 1, 2012 at 11:45 AM

Dave, Dave, Dave…c’mon, denigrating remarks about those who are gone, will never be received well by those who loved, respected or admired, the deceased. No matter when these remarks get said. And to disparage Mr. Breitbart now??? It’s Westboro Baptist Church stuff….

I don’t have many heroes; just lost one of the best.

Boy, am I sad about his passing. I can’t believe it.

I live in Stafford. If we want to swap horror stories we can do it elsewhere.

I’m not interested in exchanging horror stories. The point of my post wasn’t about the horrors of the NHS, but about Ken’s only hope for getting a date.

I remember when Tony Snow died, and the vile insulting crap coming out of the mouths of the supposed “bleeding hearts” leading up to his death.

It’s thus always; here was a man who did nothing but perform his job, yet because he was effective he was reviled and vilified.

I don’t expect anything from trash, other than it be trash.

What a tragic loss. He was quite a champion for conservative issues and exposing media bias and I thank him for his efforts. My heart goes out to his family. He’ll be missed by millions.

i don’t have the stomach for the sanctimonious bs about how we must respect dead people, as though death can make a loathsome person less loathsome.

sesquipedalian on March 1, 2012 at 12:09 PM

I woke to read of the death of Andrew Breitbart and I was just sickened by the news. Forty-three years old? What happened? I am just so saddened by this, he was such a brilliant conservative warrior and a fearless journalist. I will miss him.
