Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on February 29, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

After Barack Obama denied approval to the Keystone XL pipeline, he spent the next two weeks blaming Republicans for forcing him to make a decision on it — at least when he wasn’t blaming Hillary Clinton for the decision.  When the company behind the project announced that they would start building it anyway, the White House announced that Obama had been in favor of it all along:

In a statement, White House press secretary Jay Carney said President Obama “welcomes” the news.

Really? He could have “welcomed” the pipeline a month ago and have avoided all of the drama.  A month ago, though, people weren’t talking about rapidly escalating gas prices — and about the decision that kept additional Canadian oil from getting to American refineries.

John Boehner called out Obama for his for-it-after-he-was-against-it doubletalk:

“The President is so far on the wrong side of the American people that he’s now praising the company’s decision to start going around him,” Boehner said in a statement to ABC News.

Boehner said the president “can’t have it both ways. If the President thinks this project is good for America, he knows how to make it happen right away. Until he does, he’s just standing in the way of getting it done.”

Yeah, the We’re happy you didn’t take my no for an answer response is rather weird.  Why not just reconsider the application, if the news is so “welcome”?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The next amaturism is going to be Obama blocking the pipeline again. You know he will.

After the pipeline fiasco and a couple of other things last week, it finally occured to me whom Carney reminds me of.

It really depends on how gas prices fluctuate. If the hippies can’t afford to drive to their protests and complain about the big bad pipeline, then maybe he’ll see no political incentive to blocking it again.

Maybe, maybe not – he might get a proxy to sue, and be off the hook.

Does Obama even know how to get to Nebraska? Go to Martha’s Vineyard, and take a left?

Yoop on February 29, 2012 at 8:17 AM

Ed, what is lacking right now is an effective , articulate and combative Speaker of the House. I fear Boehner maybe more of a detriment to the GOP.

celtic warrior on February 29, 2012 at 8:21 AM

A better Obamateurism of the Day involve the Obama campaign trying, unsuccessfully, to influence the Republican Michigan Primary. The Obama campaign (along with Michael Moore, UAW, etc.) reportedly worked to help the unelectable bigot Rick Santorum, since they know that Rick Santorum would be so easy to beat.

Well, we know how that turned out! Mitt Romney beat the bigot, despite the help that Santorum was getting from dirty trick-playing Dems. The Democrats are most afraid of Mitt Romney.

Obama tried to help the loser Rick Santorum, but failed.

Rick Santorum has been UNABLE to win a single primary that isn’t merely a beauty contest. Looks like Barack Obama won’t get his dream candidate, Rick Santorum, after all.

Really? He could have “welcomed” the pipeline a month ago and have avoided all of the drama.

Or three months ago when the Republicans had to stick the two month ultimatum into the bill he had to sign. Or earlier than that if he actually wanted it.

I’ll say it again.

I know leftists are generally ashamed of who they are, what they stand for, even how they smell, but you’re President, now. Man up, boy.

Yes or no. Work past the disability of being burdened with a Harvard Poli Sci degree, with the rest of the retards in that school and just say yes or no.

Inhofe to replace Reid when we take the senate in November!

COLMES: So the Liberals are trying to control life and that’s the goal here, to control our lives through controlling carbon? That’s why there’s this hoax that’s going on?

INHOFE: Oh, you don’t think that the Liberals want government to control our lives?

COLMES: Of course not.

INHOFE: They want the multinational organization–

COLMES: Of course not. Well I know Conservatives want to control women’s birth control and wombs. I know that to be the case. Well what about the fact that you’ve got the big oil companies – they’ve got these huge profits that depend of course on their assets. Their assets are the oil that’s in the ground that they want us to drill. And the oil companies, to have to move toward green technology and give up those assets sitting in the ground, that’s what they’re motivated by along with the big think tanks that get big money from the big oil companies.

INHOFE: You know, I’m really pleased with some of the findings of the Marcellus up in New York and Pennsylvania. There are just huge finds right now. And we right now — Alan, I’m sure you’d probably agree with this because this came out from the CAS (?) less than a year ago. The United States of America has more recoverable oil resources in oil gas and coal than any country in the world, and all we have to do is develop our own like every other country in the world does and we wouldn’t have to be worried about the Middle East.

the We’re happy you didn’t take my no for an answer response is rather weird. Why not just reconsider the application, if the news is so “welcome”?

‘Cuz Scooter wants to eat his cake and have it too. He said no to the pipeline to appease the eco-terrorists on the far left (even though he knew, as we all did, that saying no would actually result in more harm to the environment, not less, since the oil would end up being shipped to China instead of used here); if he backtracks now and says he’ll reconsider, he’ll risk angering the very vocal eco-terrorists in his base. But with gas prices on the rise and the rest of the (non-eco-terrorist) populace getting restless, Scooter needs to make statements to make it look like he’s not the guy standing in the way of lower gas prices (even though he is), lest that perception interfere with the one thing Scooter values above all else: getting re-elected. Hence, we get the weird Kabuki theatre of Bammy spewing contradictory idiocy out of both sides of his mouth.

Or three years ago, when the original plan was in place.

http://hotair.com/archives/2012/01/21/keystone-decision-voting-for-the-stone-age/

Note these key thoughts on Obowma’s claim of he’s increased oil drilling:

•New leases on federal lands were down 44% in 2009/2010 compared to 2007/2008.
Permits and new wells drilled were both down 39% for the same time frame.
•The economic downturn in 2007 was a factor in this decline, but leasing, permitting and drilling have rebounded on private lands; the decline in new permits in the West is significantly greater on federal lands (-39%) than non-federal, private lands (-20%) over the last two years.
•Returning permitting, leasing and drilling to 2007/2008 levels would create 30,000 jobs over the next four years and increase federal royalties by $2 billion.
