Video: The 1% tip hoax

posted at 9:50 am on February 28, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The story was too good to be true.  A wealthy banker runs up a three-figure bill, only tips 1% (!), and writes a note to the server to “get a real job” as a parting insult.  CNN, Huffington Post, and other media outlets ran with the story of the arrogant banker and his miserly recompense to the help.  There was only one thing wrong — it really was too good to be true:

According to Huffington Post, CNN and several other news sites, a person claiming to be an employee of the “wealthy” banker took a photo of the receipt and posted it on a blog, “Future Ex-Banker”. The blogger paired the photo with their own caption:

“Mention the ’99 percent’ in my boss’ presence and feel his wrath. So proudly does he wear his 1 percent badge of honor that he tips exactly 1 percent every time he feels the server doesn’t sufficiently bow down to his Holiness. Oh, and he always makes sure to include a ‘tip’ of his own.” …

The post set off a hailstorm of online comments that touched on the 1% vs. 99% class warfare embodied by the Occupy movement.

HuffPo later posted a statement from the restaurant that said that the photo had been “altered and exaggerated.”  How exaggerated?  Well, according to the local CBS affiliate — who actually asked the restaurant about the bill — the meal was just over $30 instead of $133, the tip was 20% and not 1%, and the customer didn’t write any note to the server on the bill.  “Exaggerated” in this case serves as a synonym for “flat-out lie.”

Then again, without a lot of flat-out lies, where would the Occupy movement be?

MNHawk on February 28, 2012 at 10:10 AM

If a waiter/waitress gives poor service, they get a 10% tip. If adequate, 15%. If great, 20%. I’ve given plenty of 20% tips and tend to lean that way anyhow, but I’ve given plenty of 10% tips.

I also used to work for tips and if I averaged 10% tips by the end of the night, I was happy with it. The generous tippers always balanced out the stingy ones and I could usually tell when I wasn’t going to get tipped at all – dirt poor but they could afford the pizza and for me to deliver it.

Having been a pizza delivery guy, I will more readily give them 20% than I will a restaurant waiter. Pizza delivery guys are the bastard step-children of the tipping world.

Bitter Clinger on February 28, 2012 at 10:11 AM

These OWS types have been around in one form or another for decades. When I worked for an evil bank (tautology I know) they used to call themselves anti-globalisation activists or something. They’d picket HQ from time to time screaming incoherently and trying to block the entrance.

They looked and smelled like commies to me, but whatever.

I really needed my paycheck at the time to do the little things in life like make rent, buy food, pay the electricity bill, and pay off student loans etc. so I’d plow straight through them into the Death Star itself.

Otherwise I would have *totally* joined them and their cause, whatever the heck it was.

What?
1st stretch) Banker somehow heard the News was going to interview the Restaurant,
2nd) knew it was his tip and
3rd) took time off from work to personally go into the resaurant to threaten the manager over a piddling bill that,
4th) if time is money, cost him 15 – 30 mins of his salary plus the lost time for however long it took to threaten the resaurant.

What you don’t see is any introspection about their own attitudes in jumping on a story like this, where the “evidence” is so over the top any normal person’s BS meter would be sounding off at 100 decibels, unless you’re so into demonizing your enemies it blinds you to inept hoaxes like this.

The Restaurant can comeout and produce the “real” bill if it ever existed. That way everyone will believe it. Until I see the “real” bill, I will believe the initial story.

liberal4life on February 28, 2012 at 10:06 AM

So an anonymous blogger, who has already taken down the blog, is more credible than the restaurant management, who made a public statement on camera.

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Of all the things Obama voters make stands on…

I guess when you’re personally corrupt, this is all you have.

MNHawk on February 28, 2012 at 10:22 AM

I don’t get it. Bad tips and rude guests happen every day. And this is a hoax?

jhffmn on February 28, 2012 at 10:22 AM

Goal: Make it appear as if a wealthy banker left a miserly tip and a parting insult
Fact: It was a hoax

Goal: Make it appear as if US gun dealers are an extraordinarily large portion of the problem when it comes to Mexican drug cartel murder.
Fact: The US government forced gun dealers to sell guns to the cartels, then they were used in murders, including 2x US agents.

Goal: Make it appear as if US personnel wantonly and arrogantly burned Korans at Bagram Airbase, an incident that happens to rapidly and fortuitously facilitate the withdrawal from Afghanistan
Fact: TBD/

I have a college degree in computer engineering. I probably make more money than you…

liberal4life on February 28, 2012 at 10:15 AM

What do you do for a living?

NotCoach on February 28, 2012 at 10:22 AM

“Computer Engineering” translated probably means it simply got 3 stars on every Angry Birds level.

Me thinks the wealthy banker went in there and threatened someone…

[liberal4life on February 28, 2012 at 10:00 AM]

Yeah, the banker probably threatened to glitter the owner or come in daily to disrupt operations by dancing around chanting “I am the 1%.”

Dusty on February 28, 2012 at 10:23 AM

Liberals lie … that’s all their is to it.

darwin on February 28, 2012 at 10:23 AM

The Greeks simply incinerate bankers inside the banks, to protest their entitlement lifestyle continues.

Sorry, it’s GAME OVER for progressive liberalism. If it wins, we all lose, it’s hopefully not too late to change course in America.

Muhahaha! Yesterday you were a teacher in Chitcago. What will it be tomorrow. You’s funny, girlfriend, flexing that e-peen.

MNHawk on February 28, 2012 at 10:23 AM

So when can I see the real bill? If this is exaggerated?

Me thinks the wealthy banker went in there and threatened someone…

liberal4life on February 28, 2012 at 10:00 AM

Ah yes, the ever-widening conspiracy that exists in the minds of libs like brainless4life. Not content with a fraudulent photoshop of a bogus bill, he now has to enlarge the story in his feverish imagination of the wealthy banker putting the screws to poor restaurant manager.

Are you sure your degree isn’t in virtual reality programming, brainless?

PackerBronco on February 28, 2012 at 10:23 AM

This is priceless. liberal4life demands that a restaurant produce a receipt showing to disprove a hoax, but has no problem with a president that refuses to show his transcripts.
