Shocker: Dem lobbyists not rushing to fill coffers of Obama super-PAC

posted at 12:10 pm on February 28, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

To be fair, Barack Obama did promise during the 2008 campaign to make lobbyists into pariahs in Washington DC.  His campaign still refuses to accept direct contributions from lobbying shops, even if his promise to never hire lobbyists ended up producing dozens of waivers, and even if his stimulus bill could have been described as the Lobbyist Full Employment Act.  Now that Obama has deigned to allow lobbyists to donate to his super-PAC, they must be rushing to fill its coffers … right?  Right?

Wrong:

Democratic lobbyists who have been barred from fundraising for President Obama’s campaign are showing little interest in donating instead to a super-PAC that supports him.

Unlike Obama’s official campaign, the Priorities USA Action super-PAC accepts donations from registered lobbyists. The president gave his blessing to Priorities earlier this month, giving K Street a place to contribute cash to his reelection efforts.

Except it turns out that K Street wasn’t looking for a back door to fund Obama’s re-election effort:

“Did a great ‘huzzah’ go up among lobbyists when it was apparent that although we can’t give to the Obama reelect directly, we can [give] to the super-PAC that shares that goal? No,” said Robert Raben, the president and founder of the Raben Group and a former aide to Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.).

Even the well-connected Tony Podesta, who recognizes just how good Obama has been for lobbyist business, is taking a pass for now:

Tony Podesta, the chairman of the Podesta Group and one of the Democratic Party’s biggest fundraisers, said he has no plans to fundraise or contribute to the pro-Obama super-PAC.

“I may well give to them, but the fact the president now wants me to doesn’t incent me further,” he said.

So now it can be said that Obama was against lobbyists before he was for them.  They’re not buying Obama’s re-election bid either way.  But don’t fret too much for the President — at least Obama always has … Bill Maher.

Well, maybe Bill Maher can make up the difference.

They’re giving to Santorum or Paul instead?

Sure, he pretends to hate you, but c’mon lobbyists, Obama is the best thin that ever happened to you. Step up and donate.

[F]reedom isn’t free. It shouldn’t be a bragging point that “Oh, I don’t get involved in politics”, as if that makes you somehow cleaner. No, that makes you derelict of duty in a republic. Liars and panderers in government would have a much harder time of it if so many people didn’t insist on their right to remain ignorant and blindly agreeable.”
― Bill Maher

I can’t say as I disagree, bill.

I think the smart money knows that Obama is a dead lame duck.

Soon as the primaries are over the focus changes to Obama (unless the GOP is even dumber than it usually is). Obama won’t be able to avoid his cataclysmic record, enriching cronies via stimulus, and $5 gasoline in the wake of obstructing EVERY means of getting more oil forever, despite the best efforts of the “mainstream” media.

The Obama Regime is an utter disaster without even a single positive accomplishment it can truly claim as his own.

wildcat72 on February 28, 2012 at 12:21 PM

I don’t know if I’d put too much credence in this. To get the most bang for their bucks, lobbyists and their clients typically wait until the money is really needed, and Obama’s not being challenged in the primaries, so no need right now. I suspect that the ones who have historically given to Obama’s Super PACs will fall into line once the Republican race is decided and certainly before the race heats up in the summer.

TXUS on February 28, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Maybe Santorum can make an ad that asks Dem’s to give to Obama’s super-pac, he doesn’t have a problem asking them to vote for him on nefarious grounds.

Thing is, I think Hussein thinks cranking up the SuperPAC is critical RIGHT NOW. He wants it cranking out false memes against Mitt Romney and Santorum, and he wants it YESTERDAY.

Emperor Hussein I knows he’s in trouble.

I think it is funny bho is getting the shaft as he has given it to almost every business and human here in America?

Voters will clearly rally behind the GOP when they learn the shocking news that “Lobbyists don’t support Obama!”

Great work, Ed

e-pirate on February 28, 2012 at 12:26 PM

It would be counter productive for those who pine for Limited government to also want crony capitalism – a shrinking government has less and less ‘goodies’ to hand out.

But those who want Unlimited government can see many opportunities to game the system for themselves.

So, can anyone tell me which party would really be on the side of this cronyism?

It’s pretty apparent to me, that The Communist should simply order the lobbyists to donate.

Isn’t that how The Communist gets things done? Isn’t that his essence? – to mandate, to force, to dictate.

the way you’ve been acting lately I’m surprised you haven’t contributed to Obama’s superpac.

If lobbyists HAD been donating to Obama’s SuperPAC, HotGas would be all over it with “Lobbyists own Obama”

Instead, they aren’t, but Ed managed to pull out “Lobbyists aren’t donating to Obama’s superPAC – bad news for Obama!”

I’m surprised we didn’t also get a “this is somehow good news for Santorum” thrown in there as well.

If the obamacare mandate is upheld, which is the government COMPELLING us to enter into a contract, then Obama could compel us to enter into a contract to contribute to his campaign. Or join unions. Or anything else we don’t wish to do.

wildcat72 on February 28, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Well, they are both equally talented…if you think that toting around a large ego equates to “talent.”

ted c on February 28, 2012 at 12:33 PM

You get less exposure and credit if you donate to an intermediary.
People who donate to Obama’s reelection want Obama to recognize their
donation by name. This gives them an inside track to have a beer with Obama in the White House on concert night.

Steve Z on February 28, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Irrelevant. Chinese bundlers can put together a billion dollars EASY. Sure it’s a lot of money for one government to spend to buy one politican, but they know they’ll make it back at least a thousandfold.

and if they had been donating to the PAC, you’d be saying what great news it is for Obama. Obviously, if you have a PAC, but the donors aren’t donating, certainly that doesn’t bode well for a PAC that exists on…well, donations, right?

Maher needs to comprehend the history of socialism/communism a lot deeper than he his.

If he were do that, he would discover that journalists are the tools of commies, right up to point when they assume power. Then all the journalists are killed.

Kissmygrits on February 28, 2012 at 1:05 PM

They don’t have to donate. They know that Herr Obama will support them when reelected, and the money to push his reelection has already been set aside or diverted until needed. 5 trillion dollars in extra spending..the “Stimulus”..1.6 billion dollars “evaporated” in MFGlobal..millions to union operations etc. (untraceable amounts of those operations. Thats how organized crime functions imo)
They have the “lobbying” actions of Media Matters..Acorn-esque ‘get out the vote’ organizations…union thuggery..and all factions of the msm lobbying for them.
Donations??..yeah..they help too.

Shocker: Dem lobbyists not rushing to fill coffers of Obama super-PAC
…this IS A SHOCK, since for every $1 a crony capitalist contributes to OBOZO, they get back $10,000 in taxpayer money.

TeaPartyNation on February 28, 2012 at 2:01 PM

It’s too soon. When the time comes, there’ll be money in the kitty, because one thing everyone knows about Barack Obama is that he doesn’t stint in rewarding Democratic constituencies.

David Blue on February 28, 2012 at 2:04 PM

This makes perfect sense.

The citizens united case leveled the playing field. The field was already tilted towards the democrats with the huge money comming from labor unions. These unions have no reason to donate their political money to other political groups.

PS: The largest Obama donations come in the form of UNLIMITED TV time donated by the democrats that run the vast majority of them! There is a reason every tv news channel covers republican candidate as a ‘hated enemy’.

Freddy on February 28, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Well, I am officially sick to death of the Traveling Obama Pandering American Division Show. His comments to those present at the Auto Workers Union convention about what the “other side wanted” were nothing short were nothing short of despicable. How anyone could think that this person is the Second Coming of Civility is just totally beyond me.

November can’t come soon enough.

(oh, and ftr, I was sick of him before, but now I really am …)
