Quotes of the day

posted at 10:43 pm on February 27, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Just hours before voters in this state go to the polls, Rick Santorum said the separation of church and state in America has been ‘turned on its head.’

“‘You hear so much about separation of church and state. I’m for separation of church and state. The state has no business telling what the church to do,’ Santorum said at a Chamber of Commerce meeting, apparently referring to the requirement from the Obama administration that all institutions that provide health insurance, including Catholic hospitals, cover birth control and emergency contraception.

“‘But the separation of church and state that our founders believed in, which is what I just described, has now been turned on its head. And now it’s the church, people of faith who have no right to come to the public square and express their points of view, or practice their faith outside of their church,’ Santorum said.”

***

“It’s true that in his famous address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association on Sept. 12, 1960, Kennedy stated his belief in an ‘absolute’ separation. But Santorum reads into that speech things that Kennedy did not actually say.

“Kennedy, who was then the Democratic nominee for president, was assuring Protestant ministers that he would not be taking orders from the Vatican should become the first Catholic to be elected to the White House…

“[N]one of the ministers asked Kennedy if he meant that ‘faith is not allowed in the public square’ or that he ‘won’t consult with people of faith,’ the assertions that Santorum now puts in Kennedy’s mouth. Kennedy didn’t say those things, and if any of the ministers who were present in 1960 thought that’s what he meant, none of them said so at the time.”

***

“If all he wanted to do was talk, we would say, Have at it — no matter how misguided we think he is on birth control and many other matters. But does Mr. Santorum really understand the difference between talking about a policy and imposing his views?

“When he so misreads Mr. Kennedy, when he perceives a war that does not exist, he shows a lack of appreciation for the First Amendment. When he accuses President Obama of harboring a ‘phony theology’ — ‘Not a theology based on Bible. A different theology’ — it seems he does not understand the line between policy and religion. Mr. Santorum later explained that he was not questioning Mr. Obama’s faith, only his environmental policy. But theology means ‘the study of God and of the relations between God, humankind and the universe.’

“That Mr. Santorum believes he has the standing to declaim on the rightness of Mr. Obama’s faith, and whether it is sufficiently Bible-based, is in itself disqualifying.”

***

“Gingrich, who converted to Catholicism when he married his third wife, has also lashed out against what he perceives as a war on religion by ‘the secular left.’

“‘The forces of the secular left believe passionately and deeply, and with frankly a religious fervor, in their world view and they will regard what I am saying as a horrifying assault on what they think is the truth,’ Gingrich said. ‘Because their version of the truth is to have a totally neutral government that has no meaning,’ said Gingrich in Georgia.

“Mitt Romney, who is Mormon, has accused Obama of having a ‘secular agenda.’

“‘You expect the president of the United States to be sensitive to that freedom and protect it and, unfortunately, perhaps because of the people the president hangs around with, and their agenda, their secular agenda, they have fought against religion,’ Romney said, responding to a question at a town hall recently about religious freedoms, in particular the Obama administration’s recent controversial attempt to require all institutions, including hospitals and colleges with religious affiliations, to offer free birth control and other contraceptives.”

***

“Oddly, the assurances that Kennedy offered that day are ones that I would like to hear from Santorum. He, too, is a Catholic, although not of the Kennedy variety. Santorum is severe and unamusing about his faith, and that is his prerogative. But he has shoved his beliefs in our faces, leaving no doubt that his presidency would be informed by his extremely conservative Catholicism. Santorum’s views are too conservative even for most Catholics.

“This is a perilous and divisive approach. We have all of world history to warn us about what happens when religion takes too prominent a role. The public square gets used for beheadings and the like. While that is not likely to happen now — zoning rules and such forbid it — we do know that layering religion over politics is dangerous. Santorum cannot impose — and should not argue — that his political beliefs come from God. That closes all debate and often infuriates those who differ.

“This belief that religion has been banished from public discussion is a conservative trope without foundation. New York City is now recovering from a frenzy of celebratory publicity regarding the elevation of Timothy Dolan to cardinal. We have applauded the feats of Tim Tebow, the so-called praying quarterback, who seems unintimidated in publicly expressing his religious convictions. And, of course, we have the prattling of Newt Gingrich, who believes in belief and believes you and I ain’t got any — certainly not if we vote Democratic. As any European can attest, the American public square is soaked in religion or religion-speak.”

***

“One 50-year-old tea party supporter from Tucson pointed to Santorum’s response to the recent White House decision on whether religious-affiliated institutions should be mandated to provide contraceptive coverage to their employees.

“‘In context, what [Santorum is] saying is that government needs to stay out of religion,’ said the man, who declined to give his name. ‘That’s all religion. That’s as bad as the government being in a mosque. It just so happens that right now [Obama has] got his fingers in Christianity. But it had nothing to do with the other way. From George Washington on, there was always prayer in Congress. But the government was supposed to stay out of religion. And that’s where Obama’s going.’

“Might Santorum’s focus on religion hurt him in the race? The tea party supporter said it depends on context.

“‘If people are here, like today, and get to hear it in context, I think they’re all straw dogs, because almost everything I’ve heard from the press is a twisting of what’s being said,’ he said.”

That’s not surprising. They’ve got the bucks and are not shy about using them all over the world. They try to make their variant of their crazy religion the accepted norm. It’s all driven by the “generous donations”. Their own hubris though will be their downfall. Ladysmith CulchaVulcha on February 28, 2012 at 1:49 AM

Ah, Ladysmith…Last night you asked me to explain something that i said…probably something nasty about R candidates.

My computer had to be tended to, and i didn’t get back to you. Not really sure what i said (maybe something about the nitwits in the R party)

First, i’m pretty frustrated…and i know many are.

Second, on personality grounds I don’t think Newt could win a presidential election…his perceived ‘instability’ would be an issue.

Rick S is more or less the same. Both of these guys have NOT been in elective office for a while. Newt since 1999 and Sant since 2006. The PA election of 06 bothers me….Santo was crushed So my question, could Santo even carry his own state?

That leaves Mitt. btw, did you know that Mitt was a Mormon? That will be one of barry’s line…wait, what is the magic underwear business. I can see the bumper sticker now. No Magic Underwear.

so who else….the Guv of MS..the good ole white guy running to knock off the first black pres? Hmmmmmmm. Besides, I have no clue what Haleys bona fides are.

Pawlent, Daniels…well, why didn’t they already get in (and stay). I worry about handing these two the kingdom, when we don’t know them very well.

Christie…No….Jindal…No….Rubio….No. Next time, yes..maybe

(and i won’t even put jeb’s name on this list)

Mitt is capable…Daniels..maybe, but I know zip…same with Pawlenty.

So a broker convention would solve the Mormon problem…and maybe Daniels would be better.

My main point is just this….Party’s should have some kind of succession plans (not 100percent)…but they should have Bench Strength. We don’t have that

Phooey. My computer kicked me out for some unknown reason (yay technology, eh?).

I’d written my loooong answer but since it’s defunct, let me give you the Cliff’s Notes:

Lots and lots of voters don’t give a hoot about Mr. Romney’s religion, only about his ideas for taking the Country forward. I’ve heard so much about the underwear in the few months since I’ve been here that I googled up pictures of the garments.

For some reason I expected something like long johns–something woolen, itchy, punishing. Instead they looked lightweight. Cool, comfy, and not restricting of movement. Sure, none-of-my-business questions popped to mind about the women’s garment, but oh well.

In short, I’d rather know a politician wears his religion close to his heart, than on his sleeve.

Then again, I’m an atheist.

;)

LOL! Never heard of this but it sounds like big Man-Fun! Here’s my not-so-saucy reality. When we had to do night training, prone position, I was the only one who had to lie on my side and twist semi-forward to deccimate the target like the men. Why? I was 8 mos. pregnant with our first child.

Not much of a guerilla fantasy babe, heh-heh.

What? Florida doesn’t mandate health insurance.

Cindy Munford on February 28, 2012 at 12:19 AM

A relative (however distant) sent my father a part of his FLORIDA tax return that has Massachusetts health care requirements, that is, basically requiring that Floridians prove they carry health care. The heck of it is they didn’t even change the words, it repeats MA this and that all over the thing.

Either it’s a bad print of the tax return, it’s meant for MA residents living in FLA, or Romney has severely stained Florida in his last trip there. If I could put it up somewhere and link to it without too much fuss I’d do it, but it’s 3:14am here. Gonna have to punt and hit the sack.

Oh, lastly, someone in the comments above mentioned that Bull O’Really was talking about Santy’s support in Michigan disappearing without the evangelical vote.

This is a major shocker. I had no idea MI is/was/ever was an evangelical state. We’ve got a major chunk of Arabs and muslims, Amish, Slavic catholics, and a whopping number of Protestants and Baptists, but that’s the absolute first time I’ve ever heard of Michigan being classified as evangelical.

I think O’Reilly’s cheese has slid off his Romney flavored cracker.

UPDATE 1-US gasoline price surges 13 cents in latest week-EIA
Mon Feb 27, 2012 6:37pm EST
*****************************

* Gasoline prices up nearly 20 cents in 2 wks

* Prices in Calif. up more than 45 cents in 2 wks

* Obama facing criticism over rising gas prices (Adds details, background)
————-

WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) – U.S. drivers paid 13 cents more at the pump in the past week, the government said on Monday, reporting the biggest weekly spike in nearly a year at a time of raging debate about energy policy in a presidential election year.

U.S. gasoline prices have climbed nearly 20 cents in the past two weeks, up 33.8 cents from a year ago, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said in its weekly survey of service stations.

Republicans have blamed rising fuel prices on the Obama administration’s decisions to limit offshore oil drilling and delay approval of a big pipeline project from Canada. Democrats cited speculation and have urged the administration to tap strategic reserves, pressure producing nations to boost output, and hasten development of energy alternatives.

The last time gasoline prices rose more than 13 cents a gallon in one week was a 13.7 cent jump in early March 2011.

In California, gasoline prices jumped more than a quarter in the past week, pushing the average to $4.29 a gallon — up more than 45 cents in the state in the past two weeks. The region has dealt with the effects of the idling of the third-largest refinery on the West Coast.

The spike in gasoline prices comes as oil prices hit their highest level nearly 10 months last week on tensions with Iran. Oil prices, which account for as much as 80 percent of the cost of gasoline, settled at $108.56 a barrel on Monday.

Heres another Levin Homerun!

Mark Levin on Democrat Rep. Kathy Hochul’s “We’re Not Looking to the Constitution . . .” Remark; Praises “Brad” for “Great Question” – Audio 2/27/12
**************************

Here is audio of Mark Levin talking with “Brad from Buffalo” (that’s our Freedom’s Lighthouse reader and commenter “Brad”) about his question at a recent Town Hall Meeting to Democrat Rep. Kathy Hochul (NY CD-26). Brad asked Hochul where she and Obama get the authority to require any private or religious entity to pay for something for free for people. Her response was very revealing. She responded: “Basically, we’re not looking to the Constitution on that aspect of it.”

Levin actually talks with “Brad from Buffalo” at the 4:23 mark of this video about his question and Hochul’s answer, and praises Brad for “exposing” Hochul – telling him “We salute you.”

I just got off the phone with the ghost of JFK. He says Santo makes him want to throw up.

And here’s why. Back in ’59 the so-called SoCons who Santo loves to pal around with didn’t want to see a … gasp … Catholic elected. They spread FUD about how a Catholic POTUS would take his marching orders from the Pope. They also spread gossip about the uncouth and silly rituals they practiced. So JFK gave a speech in which he made it clear that his religion is a matter private to him and the he would govern in the interests of America only and put the US Constitution above all other considerations.

So now we have Santo, who tells us that his religion is his guide to public policy. He has the precedent of JFK, the one who makes him sick, to thank for the acceptance of a Catholic POTUS precisely because he promised to separate his faith from his policy making. He doesn’t have to put up with the kind of bigotry that JFK faced because JFK faced it! Does he still make you sick, Rick?

And then we have the attitude of so many of these same friends of Santo who are spreading FUD about … wait for it … Mormons! Gasp again. Some people just never learn the lessons of history. Not even that history which occurred during their very own life times.

MJBrutus on February 28, 2012 at 5:11 AM

By Joe Miller

The Obama administration, despite the nation’s economic woes, effectively
killed the job-producing Keystone Pipeline last month. The Arab Spring is
turning the oil production of Libya and other Arab nations over to the
Muslim Brotherhood. Iraq is distancing itself from the U.S. And everyone
recognizes that Iran, whose crude supplies are critical to the European
economy, will do anything it can to frustrate America’s strategic interests.
In the face of all of this, Obama insists on cutting back U.S. oil potential
with outrageous restrictions.

Part of Obama’s apparent war against U.S. energy independence includes a
foreign-aid program that directly threatens my state’s sovereign territory.
Obama’s State Department is giving away seven strategic, resource-laden
Alaskan islands to the Russians. Yes, to the Putin regime in the Kremlin.

The seven endangered islands in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea include one
the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The Russians are also to get
the tens of thousands of square miles of oil-rich seabeds surrounding the
islands. The Department of Interior estimates billions of barrels of oil are
at stake.

The State Department has undertaken the giveaway in the guise of a maritime
boundary agreement between Alaska and Siberia. Astoundingly, our federal
government itself drew the line to put these seven Alaskan islands on the
Russian side. But as an executive agreement, it could be reversed with the
stroke of a pen by President Obama or Secretary Clinton.

The agreement was negotiated in total secrecy. The state of Alaska was not
allowed to participate in the negotiations, nor was the public given any
opportunity for comment. This is despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has
passed resolutions of opposition – but the State Department doesn’t seem to
care.

The imperiled Arctic Ocean islands include Wrangel, Bennett, Jeannette and
Henrietta. Wrangel became American in 1881 with the landing of the U.S.
Revenue Marine ship Thomas Corwin. The landing party included the famed
naturalist John Muir. It is 3,000 square miles in size.

Northwest of Wrangel are the DeLong Islands, named for George Washington
DeLong, the captain of USS Jeannette. Also in 1881, he discovered and
claimed these three islands for the United States. He named them for the
voyage co-sponsor, New York City newspaper publisher James Gordon Bennett.
The ship’s crew received a hero’s welcome back in Washington, and Congress
awarded them gold medals.

In the Bering Sea at the far west end of the Aleutian chain are Copper
Island, Sea Lion Rock and Sea Otter Rock. They were ceded to the U.S. in
Seward’s 1867 treaty with Russia.

Now is the time for the Obama administration to stand up for U.S. and
Alaskan rights and invaluable resources. The State Department’s maritime
agreement is a loser – it gives us nothing in return for giving up Alaska’s
sovereign territory and invaluable resources. We won the Cold War and should
start acting like it.

The Obama administration must stop the giveaway immediately.

Romney woos Kid Rock, landing rocker-rapper and ‘Born Free’ for last rally before Mich. vote
February 27
***********

ROYAL OAK, Mich. — For his Michigan finale, Mitt Romney wanted Kid Rock.

The GOP presidential candidate, after all, begins and ends almost every event with Kid Rock’s song “Born Free.”

So Romney’s people reached out to Kid Rock’s people. The answer came back: The rocker-rapper, famous for songs like “Bawitdaba” and “Cowboy,” would consider playing “Born Free” at Romney’s last campaign rally before Tuesday’s primary. But only if he could talk to Romney first.

The former Massachusetts governor landed in Michigan on Thursday, climbed into a black Suburban with two aides, and drove to Kid Rock’s house in Clarkston, Mich., just northwest of Detroit.

“I asked him whether he might come here tonight,” Romney explained Monday to the crowd gathered at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.

Democrats launch pro-Santorum campaign for Michigan primary
***********************************************************

Republican social conservative Rick Santorum could see an uptick in support during Tuesday’s presidential primary in Michigan from an unlikely voting bloc: hardcore Democrats.

Democratic activists and strategists have launched a campaign to push fellow Democrats and independents to vote for Santorum to try to derail the more moderate front-runner Mitt Romney, a Michigan native and the candidate President Barack Obama’s campaign least wants to face in the Nov 6 election.

“I think Santorum is completely radioactive and will bring an electoral disaster to the Republicans – he could deliver Obama a landslide,” said Michigan Democratic strategist Joe DiSano, who has launched one of the efforts to help Santorum. “We need to focus on the one real challenger to Romney.”(More….)
