Quotes of the day

posted at 10:43 pm on February 27, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Just hours before voters in this state go to the polls, Rick Santorum said the separation of church and state in America has been ‘turned on its head.’

“‘You hear so much about separation of church and state. I’m for separation of church and state. The state has no business telling what the church to do,’ Santorum said at a Chamber of Commerce meeting, apparently referring to the requirement from the Obama administration that all institutions that provide health insurance, including Catholic hospitals, cover birth control and emergency contraception.

“‘But the separation of church and state that our founders believed in, which is what I just described, has now been turned on its head. And now it’s the church, people of faith who have no right to come to the public square and express their points of view, or practice their faith outside of their church,’ Santorum said.”

***

“It’s true that in his famous address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association on Sept. 12, 1960, Kennedy stated his belief in an ‘absolute’ separation. But Santorum reads into that speech things that Kennedy did not actually say.

“Kennedy, who was then the Democratic nominee for president, was assuring Protestant ministers that he would not be taking orders from the Vatican should become the first Catholic to be elected to the White House…

“[N]one of the ministers asked Kennedy if he meant that ‘faith is not allowed in the public square’ or that he ‘won’t consult with people of faith,’ the assertions that Santorum now puts in Kennedy’s mouth. Kennedy didn’t say those things, and if any of the ministers who were present in 1960 thought that’s what he meant, none of them said so at the time.”

***

“If all he wanted to do was talk, we would say, Have at it — no matter how misguided we think he is on birth control and many other matters. But does Mr. Santorum really understand the difference between talking about a policy and imposing his views?

“When he so misreads Mr. Kennedy, when he perceives a war that does not exist, he shows a lack of appreciation for the First Amendment. When he accuses President Obama of harboring a ‘phony theology’ — ‘Not a theology based on Bible. A different theology’ — it seems he does not understand the line between policy and religion. Mr. Santorum later explained that he was not questioning Mr. Obama’s faith, only his environmental policy. But theology means ‘the study of God and of the relations between God, humankind and the universe.’

“That Mr. Santorum believes he has the standing to declaim on the rightness of Mr. Obama’s faith, and whether it is sufficiently Bible-based, is in itself disqualifying.”

***

“Gingrich, who converted to Catholicism when he married his third wife, has also lashed out against what he perceives as a war on religion by ‘the secular left.’

“‘The forces of the secular left believe passionately and deeply, and with frankly a religious fervor, in their world view and they will regard what I am saying as a horrifying assault on what they think is the truth,’ Gingrich said. ‘Because their version of the truth is to have a totally neutral government that has no meaning,’ said Gingrich in Georgia.

“Mitt Romney, who is Mormon, has accused Obama of having a ‘secular agenda.’

“‘You expect the president of the United States to be sensitive to that freedom and protect it and, unfortunately, perhaps because of the people the president hangs around with, and their agenda, their secular agenda, they have fought against religion,’ Romney said, responding to a question at a town hall recently about religious freedoms, in particular the Obama administration’s recent controversial attempt to require all institutions, including hospitals and colleges with religious affiliations, to offer free birth control and other contraceptives.”

***

“Oddly, the assurances that Kennedy offered that day are ones that I would like to hear from Santorum. He, too, is a Catholic, although not of the Kennedy variety. Santorum is severe and unamusing about his faith, and that is his prerogative. But he has shoved his beliefs in our faces, leaving no doubt that his presidency would be informed by his extremely conservative Catholicism. Santorum’s views are too conservative even for most Catholics.

“This is a perilous and divisive approach. We have all of world history to warn us about what happens when religion takes too prominent a role. The public square gets used for beheadings and the like. While that is not likely to happen now — zoning rules and such forbid it — we do know that layering religion over politics is dangerous. Santorum cannot impose — and should not argue — that his political beliefs come from God. That closes all debate and often infuriates those who differ.

“This belief that religion has been banished from public discussion is a conservative trope without foundation. New York City is now recovering from a frenzy of celebratory publicity regarding the elevation of Timothy Dolan to cardinal. We have applauded the feats of Tim Tebow, the so-called praying quarterback, who seems unintimidated in publicly expressing his religious convictions. And, of course, we have the prattling of Newt Gingrich, who believes in belief and believes you and I ain’t got any — certainly not if we vote Democratic. As any European can attest, the American public square is soaked in religion or religion-speak.”

***

“One 50-year-old tea party supporter from Tucson pointed to Santorum’s response to the recent White House decision on whether religious-affiliated institutions should be mandated to provide contraceptive coverage to their employees.

“‘In context, what [Santorum is] saying is that government needs to stay out of religion,’ said the man, who declined to give his name. ‘That’s all religion. That’s as bad as the government being in a mosque. It just so happens that right now [Obama has] got his fingers in Christianity. But it had nothing to do with the other way. From George Washington on, there was always prayer in Congress. But the government was supposed to stay out of religion. And that’s where Obama’s going.’

“Might Santorum’s focus on religion hurt him in the race? The tea party supporter said it depends on context.

“‘If people are here, like today, and get to hear it in context, I think they’re all straw dogs, because almost everything I’ve heard from the press is a twisting of what’s being said,’ he said.”

Santorum? Speak conservative? He speaks “conservative” the same way southern Blue Dogs speak conservative. You mean he speaks about God and religion?

joana on February 28, 2012 at 12:50 AM

No, as an atheist that’s not the part I’m really interested in, other than how he doesn’t mince words. I like the way he speaks about economic freedom and not imposing even his deeply-held personal views through legislation. Even his non-conservative ideas like favoring manufacturing, at least he knows how it sounds to conservatives.

Igor R. on February 28, 2012 at 1:01 AM

I’m so evil they used to call me “Knievel” back when people knew that name.

Igor R. on February 28, 2012 at 12:52 AM

You must be almost eligible for Medicare if they really used to call you Knievel and it wasn’t your nickname as an embryo.

Really? This is you self-censoring? Why are you so dirty and bad?

cynccook on February 28, 2012 at 1:04 AM

Your vote is unnecessary anyhow. Each year there are a faction of fools in both parties, so you cancel each other out. A repeal will never reach his desk anyhow. They will never have the 60 votes. You do know that don’t you? The only thing he can do is dismantle pieces of it. Then again if Santorum is nom’d, I doubt we save the house.

rubberneck on February 28, 2012 at 12:57 AM

Your condescension is not needed and doesn’t sway anyone to your side by calling me a fool. Besides I’m just a dumb immigrant from Slovakia, so what do I know?/// Probably a whole lot more than you.

He knows? He couldn’t care less. He’s deeply anti-trade, pro-unions, in favor of playing with the tax code to favor selected industries and he never showed any sign of understanding the budget deficit and public debt problems. He can only speak conservative as long as he keeps it to platitudes.

If you think Santorum is a conservative in fiscal and economic issues, then you aren’t one.

The district of Pennsylvania?

Priscilla on February 28, 2012 at 1:06 AM

He was a Senator for Pennsylvania.

The same state that has Pat Toomey. Do you know who that is?

Stop making excuses for Santorum. He was decades in Washington as a consistent economic populist. You hear him talking and he still sounds like one. If he wins the nomination, he’ll probably try to outflank Obama from the left on economic issues, as he tried with Bob Casey.

joana on February 28, 2012 at 1:00 AM

I’m making no excuses for him. I wanted DeMint, barring that of the ones that were running Cain and then Bachmann. Now we are stuck with Rick, Mitt “stop me when you hear something you like” Romney, and Newt “I love Nancy and I hate Bain and I love Dede and I love the moon and I love kid janitors” Gingrich.

He was against the bail outs. He was against health care mandate. I know all about a lot of his free-spending votes and support for big labor. I just think Mitt is worse, and Newt is out of control unpredictable plus the worst of the three on my #1 issue, amnesty. I’ll be fine with Mitt too, but I think he will actually have a harder time winning the general because of his inability to connect with normal people and, sadly (and I mean it) Mormonism.

Not at all. I don’t really expect them to even put the effort in place to vote in the primary.

Hence why I’m not worried. It may be a convenient excuse for Mitt to use, but it merely shows what a weak candidate he is — not surprising, when you see how his supporters do nothing but attack conservatives, Tea Partiers, and people with religious beliefs as “idiots”.

northdallasthirty on February 28, 2012 at 12:57 AM

Well if they don’t show up then Romney wins by 10 points according to PPP. We’ll see how much of a difference Santourm’s new allies make.

All I see Santorum supporters do though is attack Mitt. I’ve never seen the kind of hatred for a GOP candidate that the people on this website have for Romney. Sadly, I think it’s mostly due to Class warfare and the fact that he’s rich, and that he’s Mormon. People who hate him for Romneycare don’t know the difference between a federal mandate forced upon states, and State level legislation decided by a state.

i saw Morris on the Hannity repeat…saying that barry is toast. Ha..even Hannity wasn’t buying

But i really don’t think santorum can win at that level…he doesn’t strike me as being able to do heavy, heavy econ…and heavy, heavy foreign stuff. not enuf gravitas.

but that’s just me…here’s instapundit

WHAT’S WRONG WITH NEBRASKA? “Santorum leads Obama in the swing states, 50% to 45%, and nationwide 49% to 46%. This gives him an edge of three percentage points over Romney, whose swing-state lead is 48% to 46% and who ties the president nationally at 47%.” Wait, I thought he was an unelectable extremist. . . .

I’m not a fan of Santorum, whose big-government social conservatism is pretty much orthogonal to my own views. But I’m not convinced that he’s as out of touch with the views of American voters as his media critics think.

another huckabee????…i’d rather huck actually, at least he’s happy.

but the robo call trolling for union votes is pretty pathetic…since the unions (uaw) owe their job to barry….but rove said the same thing happened in 2000….unions got out and voted for mccain.

so, looks like santorum will win…the left will be giddy.

http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/137933/

oh, and here’s another laugh…Morris said Rs would get 10 in the Senate…do you think he just might be on barry’s payroll…deep cover?

Igor R. on February 28, 2012 at 1:21 AM

It was just a joke, but trust me, he’s from olden tymes.

I see. Those were the pre-conservative-mother days of wild adventures with the boys?

Igor R. on February 28, 2012 at 1:26 AM

Hardly. But there was much coarseness and vulgarity there as everywhere.

cynccook on February 28, 2012 at 1:27 AM

All I see Santorum Romney supporters do though is attack Sarah. I’ve never seen the kind of hatred for a GOP candidate that the people on this website have for Romney Palin. Sadly, I think it’s mostly due to Class warfare and the fact that she’s rich conservative, and that she’s Mormon a woman. People who hate him her for Romneycare not sitting down and shutting up don’t know the difference between a federal mandate forced upon states, and State level legislation decided by a state their political correctness indoctrination and the truth.

Igor R.
I had an evil bike when I was young, red white and blue, it was also signed by evil himself, as I remember it was way to heavy to jump though, oops I gave up my age didn’t I?

angrymike on February 28, 2012 at 1:28 AM

Actually I was joking. Wasn’t Evil Knievel from the early 1970s? I’ve gone and made you all paranoid now. Sad face: :-(

cynccook on February 28, 2012 at 1:13 AM

I don’t recall when he was popular, I mostly know of him through a documentary I once watched.

Igor R. on February 28, 2012 at 1:21 AM

D’OH! I’m old enough to remember Evil Knievel AND his copycat rival Awful Knawful(sp?) on Wide World of Sports. A couple years back, the Mr. & I went to see Evil’s son Robbie Knievel jump his motorcycle over a bunch of trucks during his Retirement Tour. That’s when I knew I was in Texas. Yeeee-haaa!
:D
