Videos: Obama’s 2008 campaign fueled by rising gas prices

posted at 10:25 am on February 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Andrew Kaczynski must be Barack Obama’s worst nightmare.  While he and Nancy Pelosi try to find scapegoats for rapidly-rising gas prices, the BuzzFeed researcher is making Obama eat his own words … from 2008.  When Obama ran for President, he attacked George Bush and John McCain for increased fuel costs and promised an end to reliance on foreign oil in order to bring prices back down.

What gets Obama exercised in this ad?  Gas prices have reached — horrors — $3.50 a gallon:

In this brief ad from the Obama GOTV effort Vote For Change, Team Obama urges people to register as Democrats to vote because they only make two gallons of gas an hour:

You know, back then that would have been $7 per hour.  By the time this summer rolls around, that could be $12 per hour under Obama’s economic stewardship.  Maybe those voters would have been better off to have been paid in gasoline after all.

Andrew has plenty more, but let’s instead focus on Obama’s approach to energy today.  Investors Business Daily discovers five whoppers from Obama’s latest speech on energy and on gas-price “myths”:

The White House billed President Obama’s energy policy speech as a response to mounting criticism of record high gas prices. What he delivered was a grab bag of excuses and outright falsehoods.

Obama’s main message to struggling motorists was: It’s not my fault, so stop whining. The speech only got worse from there, recycling excuses and myths that Obama’s peddled for years. But there were some standout whoppers that deserve debunking. The five biggest:

“We’re focused on production.”

Fact: While production is up under Obama, this has nothing to do with his policies, but is the result of permits and private industry efforts that began long before Obama occupied the White House.

CNS News has more on the particulars of that, including just how production fare on the federal lands that the Obama administration does control:

The increase in domestic drilling was almost entirely in areas for which the Obama administration exercised no authority, as oil production on federal land declined by 11 percent in fiscal year 2011, according to a study by the Institute on Energy Research (IER), a free-market energy think tank. But oil production on state lands increased that year by 14 percent and increased by 12 percent on private lands.

“A lot of the wells that were supposed to be drilled weren’t because of the moratorium,” Dan Kish, senior vice president for policy at the IER, told CNSNews.com. “Drilling is up in the U.S. on lands he has no say over. On lands he has all the say over, drilling is down.” …

Obama’s insistence that he supports an “all of the above” strategy for energy production is not evident by his actions, said Jack Gerard, president of the American Petroleum Institute.

“Today, 85 percent of the outer-continental shelf has been placed off limits once again. When he took office, there were proposals on the table to open up opportunities in those areas,” Gerard told CNSNews.com. “Today, in the Rocky Mountains, the leasing has gone down 70 percent since taking office. We now have 10 federal agencies, departments, looking at the technology of hydraulic fracturing, which has really opened up this vast game-changer both in natural gas and oil in the United States.”

He added, “The rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline, the proposed increase in taxes, those are all inconsistent with the verbal message of an all-the-above bring along domestic supply.”

Looks like Obama has a big problem with escalating gas prices, and he’s offering us a lot of gassy misdirection to take our eyes off of his failures.

The gas is hot!

The Internet (and specifically the proliferation of video) is the worst thing that could have ever happened to Democrats. They used to just have their buddies in the BSM bury this stuff like it never existed.

Obama’s main message to struggling motorists was: It’s not my fault, so stop whining.

Wasn’t that carter’s main message regarding just about everything?

He had no record to run on in 2008, only rhetoric. This year, he has to pay for both the record, and the rhetoric.

prices.

The unfortunate fact is that Obama’s approval ratings continue to rise even as gas prices rise. Maybe he really is the Messiah because things that would kill any other politician don’t damage him at all.

gumbyandpokey on February 24, 2012 at 10:36 AM

In addition to our government’s stupid energy policy, the enormous amount of monetary easing, which has resulted in a slush of liquidity out of fear of deflation, is also contributing to the high energy prices. From the WSJ:

Another suspect—one Mr. Obama doesn’t like to mention—is U.S. monetary policy. Oil is traded in dollars, and its price therefore rises when the value of the dollar falls, all else being equal. The Federal Reserve throughout Mr. Obama’s term has pursued the easiest monetary policy in modern times, expressly to revive the housing market…Fed officials and Mr. Obama want to take credit for easy money if stock-market and housing prices rise, but then deny any responsibility if commodity prices rise too, causing food and energy prices to soar for consumers. They can’t have it both ways,

Printing money may help the stock market look healthy, but it’s killing the average American.

GarandFan on February 24, 2012 at 10:37 AM

It would be funny if they did a remake of that ad, saying I’m voting against Obama because now I wish I made two gallons of gas an hour..instead of collecting unemployment.

spypeach on February 24, 2012 at 10:37 AM

The rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline, the proposed increase in taxes, those are all inconsistent with the verbal message of an all-the-above bring along domestic supply.

This is a guy who believes he can have it both ways all of the time. He can say he wants lower gas prices and cheaper, cleaner energy, then he increases the taxes and cuts production.

He wants to both have all of the above, and cut them too.

They will. If gas reaches 5 bucks a gallon or higher, it’ll probably become the central issue in the campaign since it affects the entire economy.

Well, despite the fact that he’s had the Democrat Media living in his nether regions for years, his “Job Approval” can’t seem to break 50%. Imagine how low it really is when the polls aren’t cooked.

The latest Gallup Daily Tracking has him at 45%, but wait and see how high the gas prices go over the weekend.

This.

That’s what makes the primaries and debates so frustrating. There is hardly any real mention of Obama. Our candidates are too busy slap fighting each other.

The ads against Obama write themselves. All you have to do is present his record.

Del Dolemonte on February 24, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Obama isn’t inconvenienced economically or physically by spiking gas prices–just politically. He does not have to curtail his traveling or worry about escalating food prices, just spend his days as usual. He and his family don’t begin to understand ‘shared sacrifice’, they just keep on truckin’. Michelle vacations, he merrily campaigns, it’s THEM after all. Their numb privileged indifference to the country’s realities is shocking, the more so when you realize they don’t even notice.

In case anyone is wondering how much QE all the central banks have injected since 2007 it’s been about $7 trillion. In the past few months other central banks besides our FED have increased their balance sheets by $2 trillion dollars. There’s so much paper money out there it’s silly:

We have been saying it for weeks, and today even the WSJ jumped on the bandwagon: the sole reason why crude prices are surging…is because global liquidity has risen by $2 trillion in a few short months, on the most epic shadow liquidity tsunami launched in history in lieu of QE3.

Weight of Glory on February 24, 2012 at 10:49 AM

Obama should have spent less time focusing on slowing the rise of the oceans and more time focusing on slowing the rise of gas prices.

Mord on February 24, 2012 at 10:58 AM

This is why he always votes present. That way your opponents can’t come back and make ads about your position later when it turns out you were wrong. Too bad he didn’t get the memo that a TV ad is kinda like a vote, there is a record of it which can be used for later!

gumbyandpokey on February 24, 2012 at 10:36 AM

I believe his approval ratings rose only because unemployment numbers had been falling (gerry-rigged, but nonetheless) and that gave the impression that the economy must be improving. Now we hear that unemployment numbers may be rising, and combined with these higher gas prices — which hit everybody eventually — that perception will change and so will his approval numbers — in a downward direction.

It won’t work in the general election. He’ll either be running against Mittens who’s never served in elected office in DC or Santorum who hasn’t been there in over 5 years. Running against Bush or “the failed policies of the previous administration” won’t exactly make sense.

How bad is the Keystone Pipeline looking NOW, BO? We wouldn’t be so bad off if we had it.
I live in CA. The gas at my local station went up 30 cents IN ONE DAY. This morning it’s $4.28 a gallon.
How can we be less dependent on foreign oil if he won’t let us produce our own in our own country?

I’m SO sick of this guy. He’s straight up evil. I don’t need any more convincing.

This is why I want to bang my heag against the wall in frustration whenever I see 0bama in videos like this one.

Bad enough that the MSM hides the vast incompetence of the Soetoro administration by refusing to remind voters of his own past statements on energy policy, among many other things.

But, the “go along to get along” RINOs that still run the GOP won’t attack 0bama, either. They would rather keep sharing power with the their friends in the Democratic Party, and actually criticizing Odumba might jeopardize that relationship.

MidniteRambler on February 24, 2012 at 11:22 AM

If this issue is not hung around his neck then the GOP needs to collectively commit hari kiri.

Marcola on February 24, 2012 at 11:35 AM

I posted this on the “Dem pollster warns that voters will scoff at claims of recovery” thread, but it’s more appropriate here…

I am of the opinion that the Tea Party movement began in July/August 2008, when conservative Republicans stayed on the floor of the House of Representatives even after Nanzi Pelosi adjourned early, turned off the C-Span cameras, and turned off the lights, all in in an attempt to shut them up.

Even though it was in Washington, D.C., it was the “Texas Tea Party” (because it was about “Texas Tea”… i.e., oil).

From a comment at HotAir at that time…

…. start calling it the “Texas Tea Party”.

We’ve got video, we’ve got Obama’s own words but they will do no good if the Repubs won’t use them. I fear they won’t. The GOP establishment is going to let this big eared fool walk to the finish line and wait for their turn in 2016. But waiting your turn will not work this time. Even if the Repubs take the Senate and hold the House, they will not be able to stop the damage. This is all about race. We’ve seen the spin the media puts on our efforts to stop the freight train to the socialist land of unicorns and fairy dust. Anything we do will be seen as “racist”. By 2016, the ballot box will be forever rigged. The fat lady is warming up. Where is our John Galt?

SpiderMike on February 24, 2012 at 11:38 AM

Another issue perfectly timed for the GOP to make hay.

Another opportunity for the GOP Wizards of Smart to fumble away in their usual tiresome and predictable manner.
