Video: The new home-grown terrorist threat?

posted at 8:40 am on February 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

There’s nothing quite like sitting down with your first cup of coffee, and then watching a national news story about how your own city is a central location for recruiting home-grown Islamic terrorists. CNN reports on the growth of American influence on the Somalian terrorist group al-Shabaab and their growing partnership with al-Qaeda.  The report focuses on the recruitment of Americans in Somalian immigrant groups for terrorism and includes footage of recruiter/leader Omar Hamaam al-Ameriki — of Alabama.  But for those of us who live in the Twin Cities, this isn’t new at all:

We’ve been writing about this for almost five years at Hot Air.  It was over three years ago that a Twin Cities recruit conducted a suicide bombing in Somalia, after being radicalized at a local mosque.  More than twenty young Somalian men disappeared from Minneapolis, and the Somalian immigrant community has been working with the FBI to find them and end terrorist recruitment.  In fact, they publicly protested against CAIR when the Muslim interest group tried to bully them into non-cooperation; they have been very cooperative in attempting to keep their children from getting entangled in the civil wars they fled.  The FBI conducted raids on cash-transfer shops suspected of funding terrorist recruitment, the DoJ indicted eight men here, and then even more around the country, including in Hamaam’s native state of Alabama.

Not much has transpired since then, except for the continued press for recruits from al-Shabaab.  The real danger for the US is that the recruits could easily re-enter the US and conduct terrorist attacks, although that has not yet happened — and as CNN notes, al-Shabaab has not had much success in conducting attacks in their own region, let alone back in the US.  That doesn’t mean we should not remain vigilant, and CNN’s report is a good reminder to keep our focus on this threat.

Lets import more muslims…it is SO beneficial!

Ed,

I would have to say that you have my admiration for not being shy about taking on these subjects. Quite a few people don’t cover this at all for fear of how their opinion is received or worse. God bless you, Man.

Janet from another Planet Napolitano assures us that the real home-grown terrorists are white folk with an abiding appreciation of the Second Amendment and who attend church regularly.

Islamist terrorists?

They could go buy a old 70′s GM gas guzzler and do lots of damage with just the car alone. Why aren’t they attacking “The Great Satan”?

Something doesn’t add up.

All options should be left on the table, including a full military invasion.

Yeah guys. You obviously never lived in New-effin’-Jersey. We have about as many shooting ranges here as your state has UFO landing airports, and happen to be the only state in the union without Castle Doctrine.

On the other hand, if they start issuing permits for muzzie hunting, we’ll instantly become the richest hunting ground since the Pilgrims set their first turkey afoot.

muslim convert from alabama? His real name is probably Cletus and he’s a survivalist and the whole reason he took up with the muslim radicals is because, as an extremist anti-government radical, what better move than to side with your enemy’s enemy. If you really hate the US government, and love guns, radical islam might seem appealing.

Either that or he worked for a liquidation company, his real name is Jeffry Goldstein, and his job was auctioning off used office furniture until he discovered that the capitalist system just didn’t work anymore, and the black panthers weren’t hiring.

Yes it does. As sick as Illinois guns laws are, you don’t have the requirement of retreat. Whereas in New Jersey, if a hoodlum shows outside my door with a knife in hand and politely notifies me that he only wants my possessions and won’t seek forced sex with my wife, I am required by law to let him, show him to the valuables, and then leave the place and look for a phone to call 911.

The most important part of the story is how the Somalian immigrants are helping the FBI. Funny how some parents don’t feel it is their religous duty to turn their children into suicide bombers. I would urge the folks in the Twin Cities to figure out who the sane Somalis are and make sure they feel welcome in the community. If the terrorists are to be stopped, it is utimately up to the Muslims themselves.

Not to worry. Any attack taking place against Americans inside the US by Izlamitists has been deemed ‘workplace violence’ by Jabal Izlamitano.

I don’t understand what constitutes a “homegrown” terrorist. The MSM kept referring to the Moroccan man that tried to attack the Capitol last week as “homegrown”.

I don’t think that word means quite what they think it means.

CorporatePiggy on February 24, 2012 at 9:37 AM

Christie is not that bad on Second Amendment. Even though NJ is a purplish-blue state, the legislature is solidly liberal for generations due to insanely convoluted gerrymandering. The governor can run circles around them on budgeting but gun control is in legislature’s hands.

Kjeil on February 24, 2012 at 9:53 AM

What’s in a name? Watch the word games being played here.

The Libs apply the term “homegrown terrorists” to non-Americans for a reason. They want to condition Americans to this term and make them fear anyone so labelled. Then the term can be applied to their political opponents.

Nothing here but evil manipulation. It is all very easy to understand.

Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Sura 9, Verse 5 of the Qu’ran

Let’s give them a variant of the options their own socio-political pseudo-religious structure wants to give us: convert, submit, or die.

Perhaps we could use convert, deport, or die?

And before someone starts screaming “RAAAAAACIST!!!11!1eleventy1!!11″, religion, socio-political structures, and “race”, as is commonly and incorrectly used, are all very different things.

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –
Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari was found competent to stand trial during a hearing in Lubbock on Tuesday. His trial is set to begin on April 30 at the U.S. Federal Building in Lubbock.

Aldawsari, 21, faces one count of Attempted Use of a Weapon of Mass Destruction. If convicted he faces the possibility of life in prison. He is accused of gathering the materials needed for a bomb in his central Lubbock apartment.

A February 23, 2011 criminal complaint says Aldawsari’s proposed targets included night clubs, hydro electric dams, and the home of former President George W. Bush. That same criminal complaint says Aldawsari’s writings included a desire for Jihad. Aldawsari, a citizen of Saudi Arabia, was in Lubbock as a college student.

The use of the term “terrorist” for these individuals is discriminatory, divisive and probably racist as well. I suggest the term “Towelish Person” as being more descriptive and without the pejorative subtext that engenders so much reprehensible socio-religious hatred.

Was Napolitano talking? Then she was lying! What part of this don’t you get? ;)

The Dems don’t care whether the nut cases running around in the woods are truly a threat. They would actually like for the guys in camo to stick around to have a boogeyman to scare us with. The plan is to get everybody scared, so more power can be grabbed, so this can be used against the real enemies of the state (like any Republican running for office, taxpayers who don’t want their money used to build a socialist state, people of faith who want to be left alone to live their lives according to their values, etc. etc.)

bartbeast on February 24, 2012 at 11:50 AM

First, I want to second the sentiment in thanking Ed for discussing this topic. Most shy away from it, and in addition, most leave off the fact that there are actually some Muslim Americans who are trying to stop the homegrowns from murderous acts. We must applaud their efforts, and recognize those bravely standing in the gap, and trying to do the right thing in Muslim communities. I do not believe most Americans fully comprehend the dangers, the threats, and the consequences Muslims standing up for America face. There are not many who are doing this, but those who are need our appreciation.

Second, the other American talking about this issue is one Mr. King. Mr King has been, in my opinion, a true patriot in trying to wake the American people up to a serious crisis in this country. His hearings have been informative, and not insulting to Muslims in this country. Contrary to the whining of CAIR. Congress Critters had better get to Mr. King’s office stat because I believe as others have stated, those advocating for sharia, those advocating trouble of the highest order, will be prompted at some point to act. Whether it is close to election time, after the election, or if Israel strikes Iran, we here in America have a lot to be concerned about in this area. More so than the average, uninformed American grasps.

An example of this would be the case in PA where a Muslim judge lectured a Plaintiff, and used sharia law in his decision, and lecture. Someone needs to clue in Chris Christie, and possibly Romney, on the dangers this country is facing regarding the second front of creeping sharia, our courts. Rusty at mypetjawa, and Drew at WZ both have this case on their websites dated yesterday.

Lastly, outside of MN, it seems TN has a large Somalia problem. Beyond our homegrown problems is Iran parking thousands of RGs about 100 miles south of San Diego, the beheadings in our border states, and the total crumbling of Latin American countries into the hands of Hezbollah, and Hamas. Newt and Santorum both seem to get the jest of this situation, and the extreme dangers America is facing on this point. HA friend Fausta, has more than clued people into to this issue for years, and I wish someone would give her more time to speak on where Latin America is headed. We no longer have an illegal issue which involves people draining our welfare system, but we have an illegal problem that is beheading people, and hanging bombs off overpasses.

being radicalized at a local mosque

They are not being radicalized, but instead being taught traditional Islam as it has been taught from the beginning. Remember a segment of the Muslim community are only cultural Muslims and have been to a mosque in years and have no idea what is in the Quran, just like some people who call themselves Christians and have not been to a church in years or have no idea what is in the bible. The problem is not the cultural Muslims, but the true believing and faithful Muslims who take Islam very seriously. Violent Jihad is as much a part of traditional Islam as is the communion is to traditional Christianity.

A real radical Muslim is one who takes Islam in a serious manner and still rejects violent jihad. There are not many of them and they are not in the mainstream and are therefore “Radical”. Violent Jihad against non-Muslims is not radical is Islamic theology.

William Eaton on February 24, 2012 at 12:26 PM

A quote from today’s report on jihai websites;

A prominent jihadist writer called upon Muslims in the West and the United States in particular to carry out lone-wolf attacks as a means to support the global jihadi project. The writer, Abu Asma’a al-Kubi, posted the message on February 9, 2012, on the Shumukh al-Islam forum, and in it he argued that attacks in the enemies’ own lands will complement the actions of al-Qaeda abroad, after the group allegedly achieved victory in Afghanistan and Iraq. Kubi expressed discontent with Muslims living in the West, questioning why they haven’t yet committed individual acts of jihad, especially after the killing Usama bin Laden, Anwar al-Awlaki, and Attiya Allah, and the deaths of Muslims by enemy drones and rockets. He lamented: “Our eyes might tear up from the body parts that we see, but the weakness and the lack of Shariah knowledge, which distinguishes between the obligations, and the little faith and preoccupation with daily life that caused many people to immigrate to these countries, have become an obstacle to supporting this religion.”

First, Kubi gave recommendations to overcome the “obstacles” that hinder Muslims from becoming physically active in jihad. He stated, for example, that Muslims must strengthen their faith and realize the truth that separates them from the “disbelievers,” and also to make martyrdom their greatest desire. After, he elaborated upon the reasons for these recommendations, explaining that Muslims must understand the reality they face and that only through violent jihad can they achieve the goal of founding an Islamic Caliphate. Kubi explained that through lone-wolf attacks the US will become preoccupied with internal matters and focus less on its wars with al-Qaeda abroad. He said: “[When] it’s occupied internally and spends billions of dollars to secure its internal situation, just as it spent 40 billion dollars after the operation of brother Umar al-Farouk, may Allah release him, there won’t be opportunities for the Americans to militarize a new Awakening.”

His suggestions for lone-wolf attacks include setting fires in companies, factories, forests, and military barracks; carrying out mass-murder attacks similar to Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan; and entering a public area with Christians and killing them.

SoonerMarine on February 24, 2012 at 12:35 PM

A second quote;

A jihadist urged Muslims to participate alongside al-Qaeda in fighting the United States, claiming that destroying the country is a religious obligation and a necessity for the good of civilization. This jihadist, a prominent forum member, had earlier incited for strikes against Western embassies in Muslim countries, claiming that they are the de facto governments and have the “biggest role” in ruining Muslims’ lives. In a message posted on jihadist forums on February 21, 2012, he made a similar argument about the US, writing that it exercises undue influence in Muslim countries and that it has made Islamic Shariah a target of its war. He declared: “Bringing down America today is not the mission of al-Qaeda alone, but it is the mission of all Muslims, because America fights Islam as a faith and a law, and doesn’t just fight al-Qaeda, as Obama wants to deceive us.”

The jihadist also claimed that the US is targeting revolutionaries in the Arab Spring, seeking to steal their sacrifices and “keep their revolutions within the plan of American dominance”. He wrote in a reply to his message that fighters and revolutionaries in Africa should unite to face the US, and that the establishment of AFRICOM is “only an introduction to its coming campaign.”

SoonerMarine on February 24, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Didn’t Obama bring in another few thousands, or tens of thousands, of Hamas Paletineans under Executive Order about 18 months ago?

dahni on February 24, 2012 at 12:53 PM

Whoops, lost the thread early. Anyway, my understanding of Islam, via the Quran and several years in Malaysia and Kuwait, is that yu don’t have to be violent to overthrow the infidels. But you must overthrow them, according to the Quran.

No Muslim supports any other Religion, or the rights of any Non-Believer in Islam. What does that mean for us as Americans?
