Video: Hey, who’s up for $5-per-gallon gas?

posted at 11:35 am on February 23, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

In my neighborhood, we haven’t yet reached $4-per-gallon prices for gasoline, but we’re starting to approach that level. In California, they’ve been paying that price for quite some time. However, Nicholas Ballasly finds the highest price for gasoline right where it would be the most popular — Washington DC:

As the national average price for a gallon of gas climbs past $3.58, one gas station in Washington, D.C. is charging drivers $5.00.

No owners or managers were available at the Exxon station at 2708 Virginia Avenue in Northwest D.C. when The Daily Caller arrived to ask about the $5,00 price.

“You have to ask the owner, you know, the company,” said one worker.

“It’s going to go up to 6 dollars soon, man,” another worker in the repair shop told TheDC.

In case you wonder why high gas prices should be the most popular in Washington DC, don’t forget that Barack Obama himself said during his 2008 presidential campaign that he wanted higher prices to force consumers to use less gasoline, only he preferred a more “gradual adjustment“:

And let’s not forget now-Energy Secretary Stephen Chu’s declaration a couple of months later that he wanted to see the price of gas in the US look a lot like the price of gas in Europe:

President Barack Obama’s Energy secretary unwittingly created a durable GOP talking point in September 2008 when he talked to The Wall Street Journal about the benefits of having gasoline prices rise over 15 years to encourage energy efficiency.

“Somehow,” Chu said, “we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.”

Well, this administration is getting exactly what it wants. And it’s getting it by refusing to allow for expanded American production of oil and blocking natural gas extraction, while using the EPA to declare war on coal and coal-fired power plants. They wanted escalations in energy prices in order to punish the use of energy and force people to use less, while artificially making their green-tech alternatives more attractive in comparison. The result? Rapidly escalating gas prices, which will push an inflationary cycle similar to what we saw in 2008 and 2011, which will kill economic growth and wipe out buying power for the working classes.

That’s exactly what Obama promised us. On this promise, he’s delivering.

Suitably Flip notes that it won’t get much better, either:

February is not typically a month when we see energy prices cresting. Instead, prices tend to rise as we get into the summer driving months (and, inconveniently, as we enter the general election season). Over the last six years, crude oil climbed an average of 44% from its late February level before reaching its calendar year high (on average, it took about six months to get there).

A similar run-up from this week’s average of more than $105/barrel would have us cruising past $150 by the end of August, surpassing the record weekly average price seen during the 2008 oil bubble. …

If this were to play out, $6 a gallon might start to sound pretty good.

Be sure to check out the chart, too.

On the bright side, Yellowstone should be pretty empty this summer with $5/$6 gas. Maybe I’ll head over there for a few days, experience nature without the hordes.

angryed on February 23, 2012 at 1:49 PM

Remember this prediction. Some time this summer or fall, Obama will propose a gas tax holiday. It’s exactly the sort of thing he loves – “saving people money” and simultaneously driving up debt even faster.

hawksruleva on February 23, 2012 at 1:49 PM

I believe that the federal gas tax is 12% (another reason to keep prices high) so a tax holiday probably won’t save him.

Indeed. This ultimately hits everyone in one way or another, especially the independents who aren’t paying much attention to the election cycle and won’t until the fall. This resonates in ways that high unemployment numbers don’t. This hits everyone’s wallets.

The democrat spin control is out in force, even at last nights debate King mentioned gas prices are high because of the turmoil in Iran. And this is only the beginning, the rhetoric will increasingly get louder and boulder. It will be the republicans fault, by election time in November.

cajunpatriot on February 23, 2012 at 1:51 PM

Gas tax isn’t a %, it’s fixed at 18 cents per gallon and 25 (I think) per gallon for diesel.

State have their own tax (of course) and there it’s a mixture of % of price and/or fixed tax per gallon.

If gas is at $5, bringing it down to $4.82 with a tax holiday won’t do much for him politically.

cajunpatriot on February 23, 2012 at 1:51 PM

Federal gas tax is a flat 18.4 cents per gallon. So, you’re right, a gas tax holiday won’t make much of a dent in the price of gas and won’t save him.

Of course – if he handles it the way we handle “tax-breaks” for those who don’t pay taxes, he could just announce a $1.50 “tax holiday”, even though it’s only an 18¢ tax. We’d actually be rebating people buying gas. Or – we can go all contraception-for-Catholics on this bee-atch, mandating the oil companies (think insurance companies) cover the cost of the tax break for FREE. Of course, we’ll be told that nobody has to pay for it – the oil companies actually MAKE money by providing us every fourth gallon for free, because it’s cheaper than a pregnancy.

At that point – we will all actually be running our vehicles on unicorn farts…jst like we’ve been predicting the Libs have wanted us to do for YEARS!

I cheated and googled it before posting. LOL

Like you, I knew it was around 18 cents a gallon. I didn’t know about the separate rate on diesel until seeing it in my google responses.

Maxine Waters told us they would nationalize the oil companies. Don’t rule it out, brother. Don’t rule it out. In an election year – you don’t think Baracky might not lean on the oil companies? And under the gun – you don’t think the oil companies might not capitulate?

Anyone betting on a bad economy in November 2012 will be very disappointed

liberal4life on February 22, 2012 at 7:20 PM

I doubt that very much. What do you think will happen to GDP and the stock market when we see close to $5/gallon of gas? We’re already only growing GDP by a pathetic 1.5% a year. I’m pretty much sure we’ve seen the floor for the unemployment rate, and a peak for the GDP rate for the year. Our electorate is going to be feeling mighty bad when November rolls around.

“He Who Enjoys His Own Farts” is on TV going after Republicans for “licking their chops” over high gas prices, and how dare they use peoples’ misery to score political points?

Also, our “three point plan” for reducing gas prices is:

1. Drill.
2. Drill.
3. Keep drilling.

Hey, he got one right! Somebody get him a cookie!

With a potential war between Israel and Iran, and prices as high as they are right now, I cannot see how this helps the dingleberry-in-chief in his re-election bid.

Then again, never underestimate the stupidity of many Americans.

Rixon on February 23, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Exactly! Americans (especially college aged kids) are among the most stupid people alive. Watching many interviewed on FoxNews last night, every person approached never heard of any of the GOP presidential contenders, with the exception of Ron Paul, and that’s only because he’s a tard. They hear Obozo, and that’s who they vote for because they don’t have a clue, and can’t afford to buy one.

“He Who Enjoys His Own Farts” is on TV going after Republicans for “licking their chops” over high gas prices, and how dare they use peoples’ misery to score political points?

I, and a whole lot of other people, called this one a long time ago.

Just wait: when Soetoro isn’t blasting the GOP for trying to score political points off rising gas prices, he will blame Bush, the GOP, and the “1%” for rising gas prices.

The MSM will let 0bama skate on that nonsense, and lots of uneducated stupid voters will buy it when they pry themselves away from Dancing With The Stars.

Obama’s speech has no solutions, he just blamed Republicans. You know what, I am giving up hope on the American People, gas can go 10 dollars a gallon and they still will vote for Obama. Wow how weakminded we became. Where are the Republicans?, Why aren’t they throwing the video of Obama saying he wants 5 dollar gas out there on TV. Why aren’t they making fun of him as having no solution to gas and how he wants us to pay more. Where are you fearless Republican leadership. Man we are so screwed

I believe that it’s too early to use that material. First, it may backfire if prices plunge for some reason. Second, it will have a greater impact the closer it gets to the election. Rest assured that the Republican nominee will unleash hell on Obama later in the process. Be patient…I can’t see Obama pulling out of his downward spiral.

cajunpatriot on February 23, 2012 at 4:10 PM

The guy to feel sorry for in this is the dealer. He is drafted for today’s load at midnight by the supplier and the money better be in his account or he is out of business now.

A dealer usually holds 20,000gals inventory. For every .10cent increase his inventory cost goes up $2,000. Straight out of his pocket. He can’t pass it on, competition won’t let him. He won’t get it back until or unless the price drops. That hurts. This dealer is probably sitting on nearly $100,000 in inventory.

Dealers have it tough. Glad I was never one.
