Obama: Why, these Republicans are licking their chops over higher gas prices

posted at 6:35 pm on February 23, 2012 by Allahpundit

One of the many nice things about having a Republican back in the White House will be watching the left tutor us on how a truly loyal opposition behaves. No cynical partisan pleasure at bad economic news, no gleeful hand-rubbing over higher energy prices, no cartoonish demonization of the incumbent, no manufactured outrage over “extremist” policies that melts away once a Democrat adopts them. Just true blue Team America, straight through for four years. Like they were with Bush.

Believe it or not, I’m old enough to remember when leftists thought higher gas prices were something to root for in the abstract. So is David Harsanyi:

Gas prices are spiking. That’s great news, right? We have to wean ourselves off the stuff. At least that’s what we’ve been hearing for years. Oil is dirty. We import it from nations that hate our guts (like Canada!). And moreover, we’re running out. Oil is “finite.” Finite much in the way water is finite.

So why aren’t Democrats making the case that the spike in prices is a good thing? Isn’t this basically our energy policy these days? How we “win the future”? If high energy prices were to damage President Barack Obama’s re-election prospects, it would be ironic, considering the left has been telling us to set aside our “dependency” — or, as our most recent Republican president put it, “addiction” — for a long time.

If Democrats had their way, after all, we would be enjoying the economic results of cap-and-trade policy these days — a program designed to increase the cost of energy by creating false demand in a fabricated market. As the theory goes, if you inflate the price of fossil fuels, the barbarians might finally start putting thought into how peat moss might be able to power a toaster.

The One himself suggested on the trail in 2008 that he’d like to see gas prices gradually increase and his Energy secretary has been mumbling about boosting prices to European levels for years. (Electricity prices would “skyrocket” too by Obama’s own admission if he had his way on cap-and-trade.) And yet, despite this being a golden opportunity for a “teachable moment” on why America needs to transition from fossil fuels to algae or whatever, some House Democrats are urging O to tap the strategic reserve to keep prices down and Obama’s whining about Republicans making political hay of it all. I wonder why. “$8 a gallon: Now more than ever” would make a nifty campaign slogan, but I suppose they don’t want to add any drags on the economy while it’s still recovering. Better to wait until it’s back to full blast and then start adding drags. Click the image to watch.

Democrats sure have short memories.

They count on you having no recollection of their behavior or statements when they were in the minority.

Skyrocketing prices on just about everything have replaced the actual skyrockets at NASA.

And let us not forget the truth about the Fannie/Freddie housing crisis of 2008.

It was 2 Democrat Presidents (Carter and Clinton) who passed, then expanded, the Community Reinvestment Act.

During the Bush administration, Republicans tried to rein in Fannie/Freddie, but Democrats vehemently opposed these efforts at reform, and accused the Republicans of racism. (Shocker!)

It is Democrats who are mostly responsible for the problems at Fannie/Freddie, and the damage to our economy that resulted.

Another little know fact-the number of sub prime mortgages nearly tripled in the first 4 years Bill Clinton was in office.

And yes, that was before the repeal of Glass-Steagall.

Heck, in 2003 they suddenly all forget what they themselves had said only 5 years earlier about Saddam and his WMDs. And that their own Democrat President’s Justice Department had tied al Qaeda to Iraq, also in 1998.

I pay £1.49-£1.55 per litre for diesel in the UK. That’s near enough $11-12 a gallon. Last fill-up was £100… for a SAAB.

It helps that they tax your car based on the size of your engine and the amount of CO2 you create so there’s a disincentive for bigger engines otherwise the bill would be astronomical. <- that last bit was meant to be sarcastic.

Trust me on this, it's not just the price of fuel in the 'European Model'.

I’m guessing we don’t believe there’s a chance that would happen.

But let’s play what if? What caused it? Would we know that the president’s policies caused it? Probability that it will happen is x (x < 1). Probability that we can project a scenario right now by which it occurs is y (y < 1). Probability that we will know what we did right is z (<1).

Probability that Obama will take credit for whatever it is is 1.0. Probability that the media will scourge those who says different is .99. Probability that "he's the sitting president so he gets the credit" is somewhere between .6 and 1.0.

Now, remember that his defense is that he didn't know how bad it was and his experts didn't project how bad it could get, besides that payback-ulus was ill-advised from the start.

1) We don't know that's going to happen, 2) I doubt it will with rising prices and the main force of UE's descent is having 11 million less people looking for jobs, and 3) I'm going to be getting a whole lot of propaganda in return.

Axeman on February 24, 2012 at 8:57 AM

If only people would properly inflate their tires they could easily cut their gas usage back to where it was when it was $1 per gallon.

Here’s some strange lunatic licking his chops over electricity prices skyrocketing, noting that he would be the cause of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlTxGHn4sH4

Who was that guy?

You know, it would have been a good idea to start increasing our own domestic oil production a decade ago, but some US political party whose name I can’t seem to remember went to the mat to prevent that from happening – citing (among other environmental concerns such as the presence of a pipeline in barren wilderness) the decade it would have taken to bring oil to market.

Yeah. That would have been a good idea considering that it would be coming online NOW. When we need it.

Goddamned Republicans and their quest to raise gas prices.

What on earth are you talking about? According to you, no Americans are miserable. All Americans wanted higher gas prices. All Americans believe exactly as you do and think the economy is going gangbusters.

Were you lying then or are you lying now?

People in glass houses shouldn’t through stones. Many (maybe most) Democrats wallowed in and promoted Cindy Sheehan’s grief to score political points against GWB. Once BHO was elected, she was pushed aside.

“There isn’t a conservative on this blog who wants to see the economy come roaring back before the election. Not one.”

Actually, that’s the last thing we think about, since we know it’s not going to happen. As the price of gas rises, those in the “working class” will have to tighten their budgets to pay for gas, resulting in less disposable income.

RADIOONE on February 24, 2012 at 9:22 AM

High prices could be a good thing in this election cycle. Many voters pay little attention to what is going on in our government.
However, let the price to fill up their gas tank go over a certain amount and they get all wee wee’d up. The freebie government hasn’t found a way to give free gasoline to the “I won’t work”
force have they?

Question: Does anyone know if federal taxes on a gallon of
gasoline are a set price such as 50 cents per gallon or a percentage of the price per gallon? If its a percentage the feds have an incentive to keep the price high.

I don’t think we can emphasize this enough.

To win the House and Senate in the 2006 elections, here’s what Pelosi and the Democrats (rightfully) criticized:

Fiscal Year End Date, Majority Party, Increase in Debt (i.e. Annual Deficit)
9/30/2006 Republican majority $574 Billion ($0.574 Trillion)
9/30/2005 Republican majority $554 Billion ($0.554 Trillion)
9/30/2004 Republican majority $596 Billion ($0.596 Trillion)
9/30/2003 Republican majority $555 Billion ($0.555 Trillion)

Here is what Pelosi and the Democrats promised in 2006:

Instead of piling trillions of dollars of debt onto our children and grandchildren, we will restore “Pay As You Go” budget discipline…

Our New Direction is committed to “Pay As You Go” budgeting – no more deficit spending.

Here’s what Pelosi produced in Fiscal Years 2008 – 2011:

Fiscal Year End Date, Majority Party, Increase in Debt (i.e. Annual Deficit)
9/30/2011 Democrat majority $1,229 Billion ($1.229 Trillion)
9/30/2010 Democrat majority $1,652 Billion ($1.652 Trillion)
9/30/2009 Democrat majority $1,885 Billion ($1.885 Trillion)
9/30/2008 Democrat majority $1,017 Billion ($1.017 Trillion)

They criticized “piling trillions of dollars of debt onto our children and grandchildren”.

They promised “no more deficit spending” in order to win control of Congress, but then went on to produce the four worst deficits in the history of America.

They produced deficits that were more than 2.5 times the size of the deficits they had criticized. They didn’t keep their promise to end deficit spending… no, they more than doubled deficit spending!

The four deficits that Pelosi criticized totaled $2.279 Trillion.

The four deficits that Pelosi produced totaled $5.783 Trillion.

The four worst deficits in the history of America now belong to the Democrats, and are over 2.5 times the size of the previous four worst deficits under Republican majorities.

I don’t know yet what the actual increase to debt will be at the end of FY 2012, but I do know that

Barack Obama unveiled his new budget ten days ago, which had a deficit of $1.39 trillion for this year

So, now the five worst deficits in the history of America belong to the Democrats… after they promised in 2006 to end deficit spending.
