Matthews: Catholic Church a haven for conservative bigots, or something

posted at 11:40 am on February 21, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Say, did Chris Matthews make this complaint when Barack Obama won the Catholic vote in 2008 by a 54/45 margin? Naaaah:

SCOTT WHITLOCK: Hi, Mr. Matthews, my name is Scott Whitlock. I’m with the Media Research Center and-

CHRIS MATTHEWS: What’s the Media Research Center?

WHITLOCK: Uh, we write about liberal media bias.

[Matthews visibly sighs and looks irritated. Audience laughs.]

MATTHEWS: Earlier tonight, you were talking about Nixon and the Southern Strategy and bigotry and things like that you and you said, quote, “If you’re really anti-gay, you become a Catholic now.” [Audience laughs.] I was wondering if you were saying that bigots become Catholic now and if you wanted to expand or apologize for that? [Audience laughs.]

MATTHEWS: I think there are people who have chosen to convert to the Catholic faith because they don’t like the liberal positions taken by their sectarian groups. That’s a fact. So, you can write that down. No, you can write that down.

WHITLOCK: So, you’re saying Catholicism is drawing bigots? Is that what you’re saying?

MATTHEWS: I’m saying that some people who are bigoted against gay people have changed religions. Yes. You got it right.

As a Catholic, I’m a little bemused by this argument.  Almost all Christian denominations oppose same-sex marriage, and Catholics aren’t the most vocal on that point, at least not uniformly.  Of all the larger Christian denominations, Catholics are the most liberal in terms of voting record, not the most conservative; Democrats are much more competitive among Catholics than among Protestants and especially evangelicals. As an active member of a Catholic parish, I can assure you that it’s much more liberal than any workplace in which I have ever worked.

There seems to be a lot less hesitation in the national media to indulge in attacking Catholics, especially on ludicrous and unsupported allegations like Matthews’.  I think we see pretty clearly where the bigotry originates, and, well, I’m writing that down.

Update: Yes, I’m very well aware that Matthews is Catholic, which makes this even more bizarre.

I think there are people who have chosen to convert to the Catholic faith because they don’t like the liberal positions taken by their sectarian groups.

Funny, one of the reasons (albeit low on the list) that I left the RCC is that it’s too liberal.

Isn’t there some truth in what Matthews is saying? He’s saying that there are some people that have converted to Catholicism because they found their own denomination too liberal.

NO. It is a issue of Chritian integrity to scripture. People have left those denominations because the denomination rejected scripture. Although the issue here is homosexuality, it would have been the same result had any Biblical doctrine been rejected such as the Trinity, the substitutionary atonement of Christ or the exclusivity of Christ for salvation.

You make no sense. There is no anti-Catholic bias in this nation outside the whore running the HHS and the rest of the current administration who insist that religions engage in activities they consider immoral for no reason than Obsama lusts for the power of bringing down any religion that does not feature a Jug-eared socialist at its sole deity.

The reality is that it is not Catholics but more fundamental protestant denominations that are leading the fight against legitimizing sodomy as a “normal” lifestyle. Even in very liberal Maryland it took same-sex proponents holding a late night vote when they had a one vote advantage due to an opponent having to go to the hospital. Hardly the kind of legislative tactics that are admirable. Maryland, fortunately, can call a referendum on this vote and it will end up on the November ballot along with repeal of the MD Dream Act and a question about expanding gambling. Along with getting the jug-eared bastard out of office, this is a trifecta of issues for getting out the social conservatives in a state long abandoned to the very worst type of Democrat.

mkrech on February 21, 2012 at 12:06 PM

I’m not Catholic, but neither is Matthews or Pelosi. They can call themselves whatever they want, but if they do not actually follow scripture and the laws of Catholicism, they cannot be Catholic. Just because a guy calls himself a girl, that doesn’t make him any less a guy. Same thing with calling yourself a Catholic.

These liars are CINO’s nothing more. Unfortunately, it appears at least half the Church itself is filled with similar CINO’s. But it’s never easy following Jesus Christ and his teachings. It’s always the more difficult path. The ‘Road Not Taken’ so to speak.

novaculus on February 21, 2012 at 12:08 PM

Poor Tingles, the face of derangement syndrome. The Catholic Church has survived for 2000 years and not by bending and kowtowing to modern trends. There are set many rules and regs the most important aka the 10 Commandments and the liberals hate and despise that. They do not like to have to adhere to any higher authority than themselves. That’s why the gay activists hate and want to destroy any Christian denomination, not just the Catholic Church. They’re slowly, drip by drip starting with the gay “marriage” issue. Chris Christie at least has that right – it should be a referendum decided by the people and it should be for civil unions. Marriage is a sacrament that gay activists want to corrupt that and hence piece by piece dismantle authority. The Catholic chaplains in the military are already being dictated to by the govt. It’s like what Cardinal Donald Wuerl was saying about CNN’s insinuation that a lot of U.S. Catholics don’t follow the laws of the Church. The Catholic Church hates the sin, not the sinner. No bigotry there, Ting.

I don’t know what kind of Church Tingles goes to (does he even attend Mass?) but I’m a regular at my Catholic parish and I have yet to hear anyone, either from the pulpit or in the congregation say anything at all about homosexuality.

The only thing remotely political I’ve heard has been regarding abortion and government funding of local charity programs.

If anti-gay bigots are looking for a church that allows them to express their bigotry, the Catholic Church is not the first place to go.

SPCOlympics on February 21, 2012 at 12:11 PM

This isn’t hard to figure out. It’s the last refuge of leftism.

Shame people.

Matthews sees himself as the heir to Tip O’Neil and the Catholic Dem leadership. He knows Obama is losing ground with the church leaders and eventually that will bleed over into the congregation.

The only way to stop wavering Dem Catholics is by shaming them into believing that if you take edict into account of your politics, it’s because you’re a bigot in denial.

budfox on February 21, 2012 at 12:11 PM

I do find the vatican approved, catholic theology very hard. but ofcourse they are bigots, but not just to gays, but to all other christian denominations. and they are not shy about it:

http://www.catholic.com/tracts/the-great-heresies

Protestantism (16th Century)

Protestant groups display a wide variety of different doctrines. However, virtually all claim to believe in the teachings of sola scriptura (“by Scripture alone”—the idea that we must use only the Bible when forming our theology) and sola fide (“by faith alone”— the idea that we are justified by faith only).

The great diversity of Protestant doctrines stems from the doctrine of private judgment, which denies the infallible authority of the Church and claims that each individual is to interpret Scripture for himself. This idea is rejected in 2 Peter 1:20, where we are told the first rule of Bible interpretation: “First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation.” A significant feature of this heresy is the attempt to pit the Church “against” the Bible, denying that the magisterium has any infallible authority to teach and interpret Scripture.

The doctrine of private judgment has resulted in an enormous number of different denominations. According to The Christian Sourcebook, there are approximately 20-30,000 denominations, with 270 new ones being formed each year. Virtually all of these are Protestant.

so, there you have, if you are a non chatolic Christian, you are an heretic.

For the last several years the Catholic church has acted very aggressively to remove the molesting priests. Further, they never changed their doctrine to accomodate the homosexuals in their midst and conform to the world, as the Episcopalians, LUtherans and Presbyterians did. I’m not Catholic and and reject many of their doctrines but in this regard they have been rock solid faithful to scripture.

The wheat and the tares. Jesus said there would be false Christians in every denomination and Church.

tommyboy on February 21, 2012 at 12:34 PM

For the last several years the Catholic church has acted very aggressively to remove the molesting priests. Further, they never changed their doctrine to accomodate the homosexuals in their midst and conform to the world, as the Episcopalians, LUtherans and Presbyterians did. I’m not Catholic and and reject many of their doctrines but in this regard they have been rock solid faithful to scripture.

tommyboy on February 21, 2012 at 12:32 PM

Plus the gay activists like to hide their association with NAMBLA. They’ll attack the Catholic Church using the pedophile priests while advocating the North America Man Boy Love Association behind the scenes. Very telling.

mozalf on February 21, 2012 at 12:35 PM

So by Cris Matthews definition then what is Obama who attended services in Chicago where his pastor is one of the most racial bigots in the US. Matthews has his head where the sun doesn`t shine

HAGGS99 on February 21, 2012 at 12:35 PM

are all those sinful child sodomites priests expelled yet? its homosexuality too!

nathor on February 21, 2012 at 12:27 PM

I’m a lifelong Catholic at age 40 and haven’t met one yet. This smear has been pushed by the leftist media and homosexual activists like yourself.

Reagan Republican on February 21, 2012 at 12:35 PM

That’s not true at all. The Catholics are just as rock solid on the sinfullness of homosexual behavior as any Protestant denomination. It is so clear in scripture they have to be.

tommyboy on February 21, 2012 at 12:19 PM

This explains why gay marriage is so widely condemned and shunned in places like Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago, SF and LA while it flourishes in Birmingham, Jackson and Nashville.

They were excommunicated from the Church, just like the Apostle said should be done. So what?

tommyboy on February 21, 2012 at 12:21 PM

and then declared a crusade upon them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albigensian_Crusade

Innocent III declared a crusade against Languedoc, offering the lands of the Cathar heretics to any French nobleman willing to take up arms.

what happened to heretics from the 4th century on is well know. that excommunication also had a side effect of erradication.

nathor on February 21, 2012 at 12:36 PM

I was wondering if you were saying that bigots become Catholic now and if you wanted to expand or apologize for that?

I don’t like Matthews, but I also don’t like it when interviewers ask for apologies. Just ask the phucking question and nail him to the wall. I’m tired of both Freeloader Nation and Needing-an-apology Nation.

Where is this coming from? My guess is that Matthews has a problem with Episcopalians who are leaving that denomination over the celebration of the gay agenda in that denomination and are being welcomed by Catholic parishes. Chris must be a hater: he doesn’t like those who aren’t “real” Catholics, because they’re migrating to his denomination.

BuckeyeSam on February 21, 2012 at 12:37 PM

The majority of practicing Catholics are pretty conservative, it is the Catholics-in-name-only that are very liberal, and there are a lot of those, sounds familiar?

neuquenguy on February 21, 2012 at 12:02 PM

Is that a veiled reference to Nanzy Pelosi?

Tingles has never got over his tingles comment. He’s doomed to carry it with him around his neck like a dead albatross for eternity.

Because it shows what a friggin’ moron he is.

Did he say to protect the tares from prosecution?

And note, the RCC recognizes only one church and they do not accept the concept of a “denomination.” Might want to catch up on RC doctrine.

You do have objective data with which to back up that statement, don’t you?
Or are you just trying to babble past your sphincter?

(It’s funny, though, that you leftoid drones all fall into lockstep to support misogynistic islamofascists.)

Solaratov on February 21, 2012 at 12:40 PM

I do find the vatican approved, catholic theology very hard. but ofcourse they are bigots, but not just to gays, but to all other christian denominations. and they are not shy about it:

nathor on February 21, 2012 at 12:12 PM

Silly troll. Get over yourself and your fanatical anti-Catholicism. Jesus, and through Him the Catholic Church, loves everyone without condition or reservation, gay or straight. What most churches, including the Catholic Church, oppose strongly are acts of homosexuality, which they consider to be sins. They don’t hate homosexuals.

Not a lot of Catholics in those Southern cities.

But you make a good point as to the urban/Catholic connection; which trumps Matthews so-called “opinion” on the bigotry of Catholics.

Either way – the assault on Christians/Catholics, etc. is not going well for the left, because the target is the same: religion vs social issues – which conjurs up Dopeys’ Black Liberation attendance for 20+ years. And that Hussein thingy.

I belive Libs are making a critical error in their attacks.

Odie1941 on February 21, 2012 at 12:41 PM

Ed used “bemused” in this piece, a child of the “muse” family (“amused” is the big brother). Bemused means “puzzled.” Amused means “entertained.”

I’d like to add a new “mused” to the lexicon: “Pemused.” Pemused means “I’ve thought about this and it really pissed me off.”

The MSM makes me pemused a lot. All the time, actually. It’s quite pemusing.
