First Lady in a little place called Aspen

posted at 3:25 pm on February 20, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Lloyd: What the hell are we doing here, Harry? We’ve got to get out of town!

Harry: Oh, yeah? And go where? Where are we gonna go?

Lloyd: I’ll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called Aspen.

Sounds nice, right? Never mind that Lloyd had Aspen all wrong. The point is, sometimes you just have to get away and Aspen’s as good a place as any to do it. If you’re the First Lady, though, you regularly have to get away and Aspen’s as good a place as, say, Hawaii or Spain or Martha’s Vineyard. For her sixteenth vacation in three years, Mrs. O chose to hit the ski slopes in Colorado:

In the midst of a recession, Michelle Obama and her two daughters are spending Presidents Day on the slopes at the star-studded resort of Aspen, a source who is a longtime ski instructor at the mountain confirmed to the Daily Caller.

The Aspen Daily News first reported the vacation.

The source told TheDC that the Obamas are there with their young children and two female friends of the first lady. The group is staying near Buttermilk Mountain, at the “huge private home” of Jim and Paula Crown — the family that owns Aspen Skiing Co. There are a large number of Secret Service agents with them, and the Crowns have reportedly relocated to Little Nell Hotel until things quiet down.

This trip hits taxpayers, but, at this point, it hardly seems worth it to be outraged. Michelle Obama is gonna do what she’s gonna do. If she’s willing to take a 17-day trip to Hawaii that cost taxpayers $4 million, why wouldn’t she be willing to take another weekend trip wherever she likes, whenever she likes? All along, I’ve completely sympathized with her desire to give her girls a “normal” life, and I’ve never thought the First Lady should have to spend her every waking moment “performing” for the public. But (a) these vacations aren’t normal and (b) the Obamas are independently wealthy enough to be able to afford extensive travel after they permanently vacate the White House. If Michelle didn’t want the girls to miss out on traveling during these four years of their lives, then she should have discouraged her husband from running for president until Sasha and Malia were out of the house.

Eh. Maybe someday we’ll be able to say of the First Lady as Harry said of Lloyd, “Just when I thought you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this … and totally redeem yourself!”

So what was it if not a vacation ?

burrata on February 20, 2012 at 5:41 PM

“Vacation” to me implies more than spending the weekend out of town — something grander and longer.

urban elitist on February 20, 2012 at 5:45 PM

You’re frankly bitter. Obama and the family do nothing that upper middle class families don’t do. Whether they’re off to Manhattan, Colorado — or, like the Bushes — Maine or Texas for the weekend, it’s all the same. Find something legitimate to whine about.

urban elitist on February 20, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Seriously? “Upper middle class” families take this many vacations, to this many swanky destinations, in a three year span? In what world?

You’re not a president or his wife.

For you (and me) there is a difference between hopping in the car and going somewhere for the wekend vs. a 2 week trip to a destination.

For a president it’s the same thing. He doesn’t hop into the car. It’ the same process and cost whether he goes somewhere for a day or for a week. The only variable that increases with the length of stay is hotel costs which as you claim isn’t covered by the taxpayer in the first place.

Going away at Christmas and then doing some skiing?

Not uncommon.

Do you have a list of the “Swanky destinations?”

Just carrying on the Camelot tradition.

Maybe Michelle doesn’t believe Barry will get another 4 years and wants to cram in all she can now.

It seems ironic Im reading about Michelles vacation to the priciest ski resort in the US at the same time a report is on about Americans changing Spring break plans due to high gas prices. I actually could care less what she does as long as it includes helping her husband pack to leave the white house next January.

Vacation is a sacrifice which the Obamas ( and their dog)
make on a regular basis , so that we working folks have the honor and previlage to pay taxes.

They take vacations, so that we don’t have to .
Now say ” Thank You” to the Obamas and get back to work
:(

burrata on February 20, 2012 at 6:15 PM

You know how hard campaigning is and Obama has been campaigning nonstop for about three years. No governing but campaigning. Now Michelle and the girls have had it pretty hard too. All of that shopping at the most expensive shops and taking all of those flights to awkward places like Africa and Spain and being limoed to the tony private school everyday. If I were there now I might be tempted to change a black diamond slope for the bunny slope sign and offer Michelle to go ahead of me in the line.

urban elitist on February 20, 2012 at 5:51 PM

Martha’s Vineyard, for one.

And the “Winter White House” at Kailua Beach, which is regularly named one of the best beaches in the US. Lots of celebs have beachfront homes there, including David Kelly and his wifey Michelle Pfeiffer, and Cameron Diaz shelled out $13 mil for a Kailua Beachfront house a few years back. The Paul Mitchell family also owns a huge spread there. I follow the property values there as I used to live in the town and spent a lot of time on that beach. Last time I visited a few years ago, we were actually able to rent a beachfront home there for $500 a night with no minimum stay. Now the same house is $1,000 a night with a 31 day minimum. The O’bama house, which is just 1/4 of a mile from the place we rented, goes for something like $12,000 per week.

The O’bama vacation spot is also on the most expensive part of Kailua Beach. Dead end road with a canal up the back side. When homes are listed for sale on that street they start at around $15 million. That whole street is part of the estate of Harold Castle, who was one of the richest dudes in Hawai’i.

O’bama never lived in Kailua as a kid. His family lived in a tiny house on the other side of the island, and later when he returned from Indonesia he lived in his grandparents’ nice apartment in Honolulu.

The only reason he chose to vacation in Kailua is because it’s so swanky; there are plenty of V.I.P. facilities at the various Hawaiian military bases nearby, but He is Above those.

Hey Queen Michelle Antoinette has not had a single vacation in well over a month. She has been around the unwashed masses, and just needs to get back to the people who she desperately desires. It’s good to be the queen, especially if you can do it on the backbone of the peasants taxpayers.

Snow basin is awesome. Off the beaten path, so very few people. Was the site of the Olympic downhill races. Gorgeous!

BabyElephantWalk on February 20, 2012 at 11:17 PM

A BS argument. When we elect a president, we sign on for shuttling President & Family to wherever they want to go. An unfortunate fact of modern times — first families need protection.

And besides, it’s President’s Day weekend — school’s out and the snow is great. Last year I took my son to Park City.

Right wing class envy is as obvious and ugly as when lefties do it.

urban elitist on February 20, 2012 at 4:29 PM

It’s your argument that’s B.S.
There’s no provision in the Constitution for an open-ended expense account for the president. I doubt he’s even paying for the lift tickets. But it disrespects George Washington’s admonitions against an Imperial Presidency (remember, they wanted to make him KING!) for the president to show no restraint in the expenditure of public money for his pleasure.

Presidential BUSINESS is one thing.

But our paying for him to fly to fundraisers so he can raise money to fight us and destroy us….?

And paying all travel and security expenses so he can constantly abandon his job for pleasure?

Not even the hedonist Clinton came close to the pure, Neroic, HEDONISM of this “president,” as America burns.

A great political supernatural thriller to write would be the Founding Fathers finding a big 50-pax time machine back in 1787 that was carelessly left behind from time-traveling sightseers from the totalitarian World Government of 2087, Ben Franklin and Jefferson putting their heads together to figure out how it worked, then randomly setting the controls for February, 2012…. and once they got over their shock at the dictator in the White House, leading the Second Revolvolution.

I guess this makes fifteen million dollars the taxpayers have paid for her to show off. She is not an elected official, nor an employees of our government. How in the hell can she keep wasting our money on lavish vacations? This should be investigated as fraudulent misappropriation of federal money.
