British government to introduce privatization in health-care system

posted at 11:45 am on February 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

While the US federal government expands its diktat power over American health care, the British are looking for ways to rescue themselves from their own government-run system.  In an attempt to resolve access and provider issues, Prime Minister David Cameron and the Conservatives want to begin outsourcing work to private practitioners outside the NHS, a reversal of over six decades of public policy:

Filmmaker Michael Moore glorified the United Kingdom’s National Health Service in his 2007 documentary ”Sicko,” making a cult film argument that socialized medicine works. But Prime Minister David Cameron, the Tory MP who heads a coalition government in England, is apparently not a Moore fan: He is working to partially privatize the NHS, beginning a massive outsourcing of medical services to private health care providers throughout the U.K.

Britain’s media, in particular the Washington Post–Huffington Post hybrid The Guardian, is publishing near-panic-attacks alerts daily about the conservative plan, which comes as the British government scales back on entitlement spending, hoping to avoid a Greek-style financial meltdown. …

Joseph A. Morris, a former Reagan White House lawyer who now serves on the board of the American Conservative Union, told TheDC that socialized medicine has turned out to be a threat to Britons’ health, and to their economy as well.

“Europe’s message to the world is no longer that the socialist dream of the cradle-to-grave welfare state is an easy achievement,” Morris said. “Rather, it is the shouted warning that it is a fool’s paradise. The bills are coming due and the only real alternatives — serious financial reform of government or national bankruptcy — are not pleasant.”

Morris added that the British government, “unlike the Obama administration, is hearing the warnings, identifying its greatest vulnerabilities, and trying to race ahead of the deluge.”

Of course, I’m sure you already know all about Cameron’s plans.  The American media has been all over this story.  Oh, wait, they haven’t:

Major U.S. media are also ignoring the story. As Cameron’s own health reform bill gathers momentum and heads for a vote in Parliament, online searches show no coverage at all of Britain’s move in The Washington Post or The New York Times.

The British media have been all over this story, however, and not just The Guardian, whose editorial position is not surprisingly very hostile to the notion.  More surprisingly, the Times of London suggested that Health Secretary Andrew Lansley should be “taken out and shot” for pushing the bill through Parliament.  And the Times of London knows if that happens, the NHS would be available to treat Lansley’s gunshot wound in as little as six weeks, so no worries.

Barack Obama’s 2010 recess-appointment choice to run CMS, the parent of Medicare and Medicaid, was Donald Berwick, whose main qualification appeared to be his enduring love for the British NHS government monopoly.  One has to wonder how well this push to open the UK to at least limited privatization is playing in the halls of CMS (which Berwick left last year, after Senate Democrats told Obama he was a no-go for confirmation a second time, too), or the rest of the Obama administration, which has a habit of picking rationing fans for high positions in entitlement programs.  It should be noted, though, that even the classic nanny states are giving up on the government-run model as Obama pushes ever harder to take the US in that failed direction.

Ed your headline and some other substantial parts of your story are simply incorrect.

The proposed bill only effects the English NHS not the British NHS. The other three major components of the British NHS remain as they are.

From someone who actually understands the legislation and it’s implications:

The reforms are partly designed to encourage greater involvement from the private sector and charities.

In many ways, this is nothing new for the NHS.

Under Labour, they were encouraged to get involved, especially in elective operations such as hip and knee replacements.

However to date, just 3.5% of these operations are done by the private sector.

In other areas of health care, especially mental health, the role of other providers is much more pronounced.

In total, £1 of every £20 spent in the NHS goes to a non-NHS provider.

The reforms will probably expand this – something that has proved extremely controversial and opened up the government to claims it is going to privatise the health service.

Ministers have responded by agreeing to introduce competition in a more managed and balanced way.

They also point out that it is not all about the private sector. Social enterprises are also being encouraged to get more involved.

Although critics say that social enterprises often find it difficult to compete against the much wealthier private health organisations.

After the changes are made it will remain a single payer health care system. The NHS is constantly being reformed and altered.

The real problem with socialism isn’t the fact that you run out of other people’s money…

The real problem is that the next socialist in line is so arrogant that he thinks he’s going to somehow be able to bend the laws of economics in order to somehow make socialism work for the first time after it already failed so many times before.

That is the real tragedy here. It’s people with Superman complexes with no sense of humility unable to recognize that their belief structure is so flawed that it leads to the demise of the people they aim to lead.

tard4life knows full well that there isn’t such a thing as free money. I suspect all libs know this and always have. Tard4life must belong at the bottom of the food chain and is benefiting directly from pushing this nanny/welfare/statist mindset.

The main difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals always bet against themselves and conservatives tend to bet on themselves and their abilities to survive and prosper. Liberals don’t believe in themselves enough to know that they can accomplish anything of real value without the collective. They need the government to fill in the gaps in their lives because the self confidence that they can manage on their own is not there.

Conservatives are definitely the “can do” people of this nation. They tend to believe that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it, work hard, and are disciplined enough to stay on the course.

So, the only chance liberals see for themselves is to band together and elect someone to office who will mandate the concessions for them through the hard work of the “can do” people.

Conservatives are viewing themselves as winners.

Liberals are viewing themselves as losers.

It’s sad to follow the logic of a liberal because it’s so self-destructive and pathetic. The more people in this country they can convince to view themselves as losers in need of others to carry their load, the more secure their future seems to them.

You just can’t argue with people like that, they hate their own lack of ability to succeed. Their responses will always be that of a cornered animal.

Accordingto the NHS themselves, not the plumber, the NHS spokesman, the plumber who broke his arm 10 months ago had his operation cancelled at least once because he hadn’t quit smoking. Is that how socialized medicine works? You don’t get your broken arm set properly if you are overweight, still smoke, or eat trans fat?

JustTruth101 on February 18, 2012 at 1:24 PM

Not to detract from the horrors of socialized medicine, but tobacco does seriously impair healing from surgery, particularly where bones are involved, so it could be medically better for the patient to postpone surgery until off the tobacco. I don’t know enough of the facts to say either way, just presenting it as a possibility in this particular instance.

You just can’t argue with people like that, they hate their own lack of ability to succeed. Their responses will always be that of a cornered animal.

True, the snarling, the snapping, and the puddle of biological waste beneath them are pretty much identical.

I have been collecting NHS horror stories since Obamacare appeared on the horizon. There are many of them, and most of them appear in the Daily Mail, often with links to the original inquiries or reports.

i will try to do a link dump in the next comment. if you don’t see it, I assume it is because the comment system won’t let it through.

YehuditTX on February 18, 2012 at 4:01 PM

I can’t say I’ve had great service in our current health system – my wife is currently waiting until the end of March for another kdney specialist to solve her ongoing potential kidney failure, and is going on 13 years with a chronic cough no doctor has been able to solve.
But the LAST thing I want is Brit NHS style government run healthcare making it as efficient as say the USPS, DMV, Dept of Energy, Dept of Education, or pretty much ANY government organization.

dentarthurdent on February 18, 2012 at 4:14 PM

You could do a search on the Daily Mail and Telegraph sites, they are the main reporters on this issue. I’ll just give you some article titles to give you the flavor. This isn’t even all of them, but I have some repetitions and I don’t have time to weed them out right now.

He

is working to partially privatize the NHS, beginning a massive outsourcing of medical services to private health care providers throughout the U.K.

Where did they show up from?

Cameron is not that stupid. NHS is a sacred cow in Britain…

liberal4life on February 18, 2012 at 11:52 AM

My perusal of the comment threads under the various news stories I listed above (almost all from the Telegraph and the Daily Mail) show a lot of Stockholm Syndrome. The Brits have had NHS since right after WWII. Few of them can imagine anything different.

YehuditTX on February 18, 2012 at 7:29 PM

British government to introduce privatization in health-care system

But with a myriad of government regulations anyway I’m sure.

Also, unless health care costs go down or stabilize, and/or earning power goes up, this is still pretty meaningless as far as health care itself goes.

Another thing, will this do anything to lower the British citizen’s taxes? I doubt that.

How hard can it be to pull yourself out of a quagmire of your own making.

There must be a Maurits Escher diagram we can use to illustrate this – somewhere!!

liberal4life on February 18, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Yes, a horrible, incredibly expensive, poor quality, poor service sacred cow. the brits would rather have poor and extremely expensive care than give up the NHS.

And American Liberals also would rather have poor and extremely expensive (more expensive by far than current health care costs) care than not have socialized care.

It’s weird to me that results don’t matter to some people. Only the illusion of “fairness”. As if the rich in any socialized medicine country don’t still get better care either in that country or going to another country. All that happens is the middle class’s care gets ruined.

the same will happen here. We will all suffer with Medicaid/Medicare level care and the rich will go to some island nation or south American nation – where all the U.S. doctors will go – for top notch care and all of us in the middle class will all be treated by Indian (as in India, not native american) doctors after months-long waiting periods.

but it will all be “equal” or something. And of course our taxes will skyrocket and the gov’t will regulate every aspect of our lives in the quest for keeping health care costs down.

But it will be a wonderful utopian socialist victory for the left.
