Inevitable: Megadeth frontman endorses … Rick Santorum?

posted at 9:31 pm on February 15, 2012 by Allahpundit

If a superstar of thrash metal is going to endorse, obviously it’ll be the candidate who compares himself to Richie Cunningham.

Speaking of news, you were a correspondent for MTV during the 1992 presidential election. What’s your take on US politics in 2012?

“I’m just hoping that whatever is in the White House next year is a Republican. I can’t bear to watch what’s happened to our great country. Everybody’s got their head in the sand. Everybody in the industry is like, ‘Oh, Obama’s doing such a great job…’ I don’t think so. Not from what I see.

“Looking at the Republican candidates, I’ve got to tell you, I was floored the other day to see that Mitt Romney’s five boys have a $100 million trust fund. Where does a guy make that much money? So there’s some questions there. And watching Newt Gingrich, I was pretty excited for a while, but now he’s just gone back to being that person that everybody said he was – that angry little man. I still like him, but I don’t think I’d vote for him.

“Ron Paul… you know, I heard somebody say he was like insecticide – 98 percent of it’s inert gases, but it’s the two percent that’s left that will kill you. What that means is that he’ll make total sense for a while, and then he’ll say something so way out that it negates everything else. I like the guy because he knows how to excite the youth of America and fill them in on some things. But when he says that we’re like the Taliban… I’m sorry, Congressman Paul, but I’m nothing like the Taliban.

“Earlier in the election, I was completely oblivious as to who Rick Santorum was, but when the dude went home to be with his daughter when she was sick, that was very commendable. Also, just watching how he hasn’t gotten into doing these horrible, horrible attack ads like Mitt Romney’s done against Newt Gingrich, and then the volume at which Newt has gone back at Romney… You know, I think Santorum has some presidential qualities, and I’m hoping that if it does come down to it, we’ll see a Republican in the White House… and that it’s Rick Santorum.”

I haven’t listened to them since “Countdown to Extinction” (I remember it as more melodic than most metal but not as poppy as Motley Crue), but Dave Weigel — who titles his post on this “Megavest” — notes that Mustaine’s conservative leanings have been more overt in recent recordings, including a rant against the UN on, er, “United Abominations.” It’s not just foreign policy, either: Check out the interview he gave to KIRO in Seattle about gay marriage.

Chris Kornelis: Does his stance on these social issues bother you?

Mustaine: It doesn’t bother me at all.

CK: Do you support gay marriage?

DM: I’m very conservative. So, take it for what it’s worth.

CK: Washington state, just this week, the governor signed gay marriage into law. Do you support gay marriage, or is that something you oppose?

DM: Well, since I’m not gay, the answer to that would be no.

CK: OK. What about for people who are gay?

DM: Since I’m not gay, the answer to that would be no.

CK: Would you support legislation to make marriage between a man and another man legal?

DM: I’m Christian. The answer to that would be no.

He’s the second coming of the Nuge, minus about a thousand machine guns and crossbows. To commemorate the occasion, here’s the first track off of 1990′s “Rust in Peace” — as selected by our own Ed Morrissey. Yes, really. The big E knows his Megadeth well enough to have kicked off his radio show today with this song, advising me that it “makes an awesome intro.” Somewhere out there, my friends, I guarantee you, there’s 20-year-old footage of him thrashing around in a mosh pit. Find it for me.

What invective used against Governor Romney is as bad as that term used for Senator Santorum?

Check out the album art of Megadeth’s United Abomination CD.

I have the Dave Mustaine United Abominations guitar and had to have it because of the album art.

Testament has a great song that most of us could get behind called “The Evil Has Landed”. It’s about 911.

I think that was Neil Peart. And he’s been subtly walking that back for years now. He always qualifies those songs in interviews. And then there’s Beneath, Between, and Behind.

For God’s sake,… “god sakes” you always capitalize God, we only have one God, so he doesn’t need, “sakes”?… he has only one..

like you..

Why would you assume any number of us would know the Daily Show has pet derogatories for Santorum?… it’s not like many of us watch the High Priest of liberal comedy.. that you do, says volumes about Mitt supporters.. and why you are utterly tone deaf.

You see nothing wrong with denigrating the entire conservative base, and no reason why he has to reach out to the party’s staunchest most loyal voters..

not very bright is it?

Interesting endorsement, but Conservative?

“I’ve got to tell you, I was floored the other day to see that Mitt Romney’s five boys have a $100 million trust fund. Where does a guy make that much money? So there’s some questions there.”

When did having too much money become a conservative issue?

It wasn’t Romney supporters who came up with that.

Priscilla

That’s your defense, lol? No, they didn’t come up with it, they just use it when referencing Santorum. Since I didn’t come up with the “n” word, in Priscilla’s bizarro world of logic, that means it’s ok to use it when talking about Obama.

You see nothing wrong with denigrating the entire conservative base, and no reason why he has to reach out to the party’s staunchest most loyal voters..

Well, apparently, as long as the denigration originates on the left, it’s ok to use it against fellow Republicans.

You must be another public school educated left~wing nut
You “may” be able to read marginally but, your comprehension skills are questionable.

I believe you’ll find your answer here:

DevilsPrinciple on February 16, 2012 at 5:38 AM

I’m surprised by this. I for sure thought he would be endorsing Ron Paul. After all, Megadeth has done a crap ton of songs about conspiracy theories. Plus, the song “End Game” sounds like something a truther would have came up with.

Keep in mind I say all this as a fan of Megadeth.

Well it’s good to know that Mustaine hasn’t gone bat sh*t crazy, unlike John Sheafer (fellow metalheads should know who I’m talking about).

DethMetalCookieMonst on February 16, 2012 at 5:45 AM

Apologies in advance if I was using your bizarre logic to frame your argument for you.

DevilsPrinciple on February 16, 2012 at 5:54 AM

I don’t care about the political opinions of the musicians I like unless they get in my face and obnoxious about it.

Yeah, it’s nice when someone like Neil Peart writes Rand-inspired, essentially libertarian lyrics, but when Geddy Lee made it plain he was no fan of George W Bush, I was hardly devastated. In fact, I didn’t much care.

I don’t actively seek out the opinions of rock musicians, either. As Alice Cooper pointed out, not only are they not experts, most of them are little more than high school dropouts. I would also observe they’re hypocritical. Bruce Springsteen, for example, is no more blue collar than the Koch Bros, and probably a bit less.

As for Megadeth, I was never a big fan. I didn’t get into the whole speed metal/thrash genre. I’m a big Iron Maiden fan, though…but they’re a little more old school, older even than Megadeth/Metallica – and that’s pretty old.

DRayRaven on February 16, 2012 at 5:57 AM

I was at a Concrete Blonde concert in D.C. back around ’91 or ’92 and Johnette Napolitano, the singer started going off on George Bush right there on stage. This is Bush senior, mind you. Can’t even begin to image what is would have been like with W in the White House. But man, I was so bummed because I loved their music so much.

Dongemaharu on February 16, 2012 at 6:17 AM

If only the Foo Fighters would see the light. The day Dave Grohl goes political on stage is the day I stop going to their concerts.

WordsMatter on February 16, 2012 at 7:43 AM

Speaking of Christian musicians, I highly recommend the music of Apologetix. They write and play Christian parody versions of popular songs from a very wide range of groups dating from the 50′s to the present day.

Their official web site is here, but you can also find a lot of their material on YouTube.

I’m amazed at how good a job they do imitating artists from a very wide spectrum of genres and decades. Musically and acoustically, they sound very, very close to the original songs, and their lyrics always deliver a Biblical message. Great group!

ITguy on February 16, 2012 at 8:07 AM

Oh, and don’t forget Alice Cooper. Who else?

Bmore on February 15, 2012 at 9:50 PM

Apologetix mentions Alice Cooper in their song, “Lazy Brain”, which is a parody of “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne.

He’s talking about rethinking the if it feels good do it philosophy which has wrecked havoc on the American family.. out of wedlock births, child poverty,

all those icky consequences of not keeping your pants zipped up when it’s not in your interests to hav a child as a teen..

stuff like that..

First, you quote Huffpo quoting an article from 20 years ago, which even Huffpo admits is an outlier; Santorum has consistently grown more conservative in his positions.

As to the second quote, in which you are evidently trying to imply that Santorum’s dislike for Libertarianism means he is going to stop you from using condoms or something, I’ll just repeat myself from another thread:

This is patently untrue. Unlike a whole lot of Leftists, Santorum understands the difference between personal opinion and political opinion. He voted for the Abortion Clinic Access bill, which protects people involved in what he considers to be the most heinous of sins.

To then say he’s going to control your life is ludicrous. The folks who want to control your life are the ones mandating that you pay for health care, and that you pay for other people’s decisions that you find reprehensible. Leftists want every person to be under the thumb of unelected bureaucrats who can dole out favors to their friends. To see this in actio, simply refer to nearly every decision this administration has made, from green tech payola to contraception mandates. Conservatives believe in the law of the land, which amounts to this: the Federal government has limited, enumerated powers (and not “penumbras” or “emanations”) and the states can write whatever laws they want – you can then vote either at the ballot box or with your feet.

It’s simple, really, and Santorum gets it. Nobody else does, including Crazy Uncle Doctor Ron who is Libertarian, which means that nobody gets to pass any laws and we can all sit around in a dope-induced haze as long as we don’t hurt anyone else.

His conversion to Christianity is relatively recent, but he’s always been a “homophobe”. Good for his soul, I guess, since he once claimed that he planned to become a satanist until he learned he had to mount the priest. :/

I believe that was a little after Rust in Peace (he’s grown a bit since then, obviously). He’s always had some odd quirks, but there’s no denying that he’s introspective. This is not surprising at all.

But then, I’m never surprised when metal artists in particular express conservative viewpoints. Just as I’m never surprised when jazz artists are over-the-top libs. It’s the blues artists I wonder about.

Yeah, I know.

Like this guy.

yeah, nothing leftie about that at all, your a dishonest shill who will keep your lips firmly on willard’s cock no matter what. funding abortions is what PP does, its what they have always done. i dont care what her intent was. any money she gave no matter what purpose it helps to keep killing babies. and if she thinks otherwise she’s either too dumb or too dishonest to be a first lady.

Gunlock Bill on February 16, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Mustaine is a bright guy, but he has some serious character flaws. Luckily, the guy was able to kick his destructive drug habit and move forward. However, Slayer’s Reign in Blood and South of Heaven albums stomp all over anything Megadeth has ever released.

Spirit Crusher on February 16, 2012 at 12:40 PM

I’m just glad he’s on the right side of the spectrum. I can’t say I approve of the direction they went on their last release but they’re still a great band.

Kataklysmic on February 16, 2012 at 12:52 AM

Really? I thought it was pretty stylistically in line with their other albums – their sound changed a little as all bands do, but I wasn’t seeing any bigger difference between For We Are Many and Overcome than there was between Overcome and Fall of Ideals (granted, Fall of Ideals has always been my favorite album of theirs).

While Slayer is absolutely awesome live, the studio albums are crap. Decade of Aggression, perhaps.

Otoh, my favorite Megadeth album was So Far, So Good…So What? and everyone knows that one reeked.

VerbumSap on February 16, 2012 at 1:26 PM

This is awesome! Dave Mustaine was a hardcore Democrat back in the day. Not sure when he changed sides but the thought of him and Nugent on our side makes me wanna bust out Youthanasia…..an underrated 90′s album.

Always liked Megadeath

How could I be so well aligned with MegaDeath? What am I going to tell Andrea Bocelli?

NOMOBO on February 16, 2012 at 1:57 PM

You sound like a moron. It is called inference. Obviously he feels something is amiss with Mitt Romney’s wealth. What other questions could he have had in mind? Also, you don’t put a space between the question mark and the last letter in the sentence. Maybe you would have learned if you weren’t too busy denigrating people who didn’t pull their children out of school because it wasn’t Christian enough.

antisense on February 16, 2012 at 8:37 AM

1/ There are no sounds here. So I don’t “sound” like anything.
2/ No I am not a moron, but you suggesting that it’s called inference instead of mind reading says to me the same thing. You still don’t know what he meant, do you ?
SO, yes, it is mind reading. There’s not much to infer from that unless of your course you’re making things up like you appear to be. And then you ask ” What other questions could he have had in mind?” This directly says THAT YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT HE MEANT BY THE QUESTION.
3/ If he felt something was amiss, then I would HAVE to believe that he would have articulated it further. YOU directly IMPLY that by asking the question “What other questions could he have had in mind?”, THUS YOU are mind reading NOT inferring.

4/As for my typo, if that’s the best you have then I suggest you take another shot, although I suspect that was the best a public school educated low-bar standard bearer like you can muster intellectually.

If you had any ambition you’d have looked up the definition of the word”infer”. BUT, since you did not, I will NOW EDUCATE YOU. Maybe.

TO INFER IS FOR THE RECEIVER OF INFORMATION TO MAKE A GUESS USING SPECIFIC EVIDENCE.

Since there is no SPECIFIC information for to arrive at the inference that he was thinking that Romney made too much money, YOU are mind reading.

5/ …pull their children out of school because it wasn’t Christian enough ? WTF ?
I wouldn’t allow my children to go to a public school. They go to a private school for the very reason of avoiding distracting PEOPLE LIKE YOU who send their kids to public school. I don’t want my children anywhere NEAR you or your ilk because of the very mentalities that you’ve displayed here. They’re far too valuable to me for that.

Who knows why you interjected the Christian line but it certainly is a non sequitur, just like your implication regarding what Mustaine asked rhetorically about Romneys income, in terms of our discussion earlier.

Telling my children, me or anyone else what to believe as far as deities are concerned and what lunch to pack is no more anyone’s business than and whether they should tell others what to believe in or what to pack, particularly a blog board, filled with airheads like YOU who have zip~ola ! I would have thought as an American you would have known the difference.

Now take your tin foiled arguments back to AOL where you belong.

You’re out of your depth here.

DevilsPrinciple on February 16, 2012 at 2:38 PM

I’ve liked Mustane’s political sense since Peace Sells. At the time I thought the lyric “If there’s a new way/I’ll be the first in line/But it better work this time.” as a perfect statement of a principled moderate. Now, I know that less than full capitulation to the Great New Way is what makes one conservative. I guess that’s why it makes sense that Mustane is now a conservative Christian.

Axeman on February 16, 2012 at 2:53 PM

But more importantly, what does Mustane think about Whitney Houston’s death?

Axeman on February 16, 2012 at 3:10 PM

I have a big problem with Nug and his need to kill innocent animals. Crossbows don’t exactly scream ‘quick death’..
*fire away*
annoyinglittletwerp on February 15, 2012 at 9:56 PM

That need to kill is probably a result of a need to eat. At close range a crossbow is damn nasty and no more ‘slow death’ than a rifle at 200 yards.

jdkchem on February 16, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Inevitable: Megadeth frontman endorses … Rick Santorum?

Maybe he was referring to Bon Jovi guitarist Rich Sambora, hell their names sound almost identical.

cableguy615 on February 16, 2012 at 6:15 PM

You guys are so fun to mess with. Do you realize the chances of an incumbent losing? You would have better luck devoting your time to inflation, more hostages in Eygpt and a bad economy than the endless copy and paste information of anyone not Gov. Romney.

Cindy Munford on February 15, 2012 at 9:51 PM

So we should just accept this existential threat to the country as a done deal and run someone who is unelectable. No. That’s a really bad idea.

I’m really starting to think some of the other commenters are right and the Romney supporters are a classless lot. Way to pitch your candidate in a reasoned intelligent manner.

hawkdriver on February 15, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Some of us care about the country and want it back on the right track. I don’t think there is anything classy in pretending that re-electing the worst president in US history is acceptable. If you think otherwise I am going to be fine without your approval.

cableguy615 on February 16, 2012 at 6:21 PM

FYI to Ed – Dave Ellefson of Megadeath is from Jackson, Minnesota, and he recently announced he’s studying to become a Lutheran Pastor in the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. Go figure? Wonder is he supports Santorum, too?
