Obama’s Attack Watch returns as … “Truth Team”

posted at 11:35 am on February 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Allahpundit officially wins the Attack Watch Dead Pool, BuzzFeed informs us today, as the Obama re-election campaign rolls out yet another Snitch Central apparatus for its 2012 efforts.  Last September, AP predicted that the much-derided Attack Watch would remain in place because, as Mary Katherine Ham tweeted at the time, “#AttackWatch is metaphor for Obama 08 vs. 12. Same product, subtract style, sprinkle desperation.”  You can still smell the desperation in the new Truth Team effort, which incorporates Attack Watch as one of its components:

President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign announced early Monday that it is launching a new site to enable supporters to promote Obama’s successes and “hold Republicans accountable.”

The new site incorporates the AttackWatch brand, which was met by ridicule from the GOP when it was announced last year, and encourages Obama supporters to “report” attacks from Republicans.

“The goal is to ensure that when Republicans attack President Obama’s record, grassroots supporters can take ownership of the campaign and share the facts with the undecided voters in their lives,” said Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter in a release.

The campaign is also setting up “truth teams” in swing states this week, receiving help from allied unions.

What a shock!  I’m sure those “allied unions” include the SEIU, AFSCME, and the NEA, the three unions that have the most to lose if Republicans make good on their pledges to shrink the actual size and cost of government.  Given their level of success (and honesty) in fighting Scott Walker in Wisconsin, at least so far, I’m not sure that this will do the Obama campaign much good anyway.

Let’s reflect once more on the observations of Victor Davis Hanson last September when Obama and his campaign rolled out Attack Watch to recall just how offensive and ridiculous this effort is:

Yet go onto the new (“Paid for by Obama for America”) AttackWatch.com website. It reads and looks like some sort of Stasi file (“file” is their vocabulary, not mine). It asks readers to inform them of criticism of Obama. The format is, I guess by intent, supposed to resemble a government intelligence dossier (“Attack files”), with its blaring black and red headers: “Attack” /”Attackers” (followed by names and pictures of the supposed bad guys)/”Attack Type” /(“public statements”) followed by check off boxes like  “Have your seen or heard this attack?” “Yes/No”. It reminds me of of living in 1973 dictatorial Greece, when we all kept silent about the Colonels upon entering the apartment building, lest the government-paid concierge write something down not nice in her black book.

Apparently no one in the administration learned from the spooky tone of the now defunct Journolist. That obtuseness begs the question, what is it with these extra-journalistic efforts to intimidate critics, as if the 2012 campaign will be based around deterrence: e.g., as if: “Beware: if you criticize Barack Obama, your name and picture will appear on our “Attack File”. We are watching you, so you watch out!”

So creepier still is the request to snoop around and collect evidence for what the Roman emperors and French monarchs used to call maiestas/Lèse-majesté—supposed crimes against the head of state, by circulating criticism of his authority that might lessen his proper sense of majesty. Indeed, on AttackWatch.com there is a special pop-up window that is reminiscent of Crimestoppers.com that supposedly will help form some sort of a clearing house: “Your email”/”content of attack or link”/”Attack type”, “Attach” with a link “Report” that pops up yet another window.

The new defenders of His Royal Highness, Media Matters, will undoubtedly play a large role in this new effort as well.  But it’s not all bad, is it?  For instance, I’d bet a lot of Hot Air readers would love to send alerts to Obama’s “Truth Team” when people flat-out lie in the public square about policy and process.  For instance, Jack Lew should be the first entry to Obama’s Truth Team, and I’m sure there will be plenty of material generated within the Obama administration to keep them busy until November.

Who me ? Concerned ? I think not. IF ANYTHING, this sort of propaganda attack will give “free advertising” to issues that the intrepid democrite reader would maybe not otherwise be aware of.
Besides they have the major networks and MSNBC and CNN as their main refudiators anyway. The more team Ocommie has to explain, the more people have as chance to taste the koolaid.

Is it true that these “authoritative anonymous sources” have to be protected for national security reasons? Janet Incompetano said so; thus, it must me a fact.

onlineanalyst on February 13, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Yes, that is a fact. And in fact, the more authoritative the source, the more anonymous it must be. For example:

“I was Barack Obama’s Women’s Studies professor at Occidental – When one of my students reported to me that Barack was selling them coke that had been stepped on too much, I had to intervene and let him know this was not OK and that he’d have to provide better stuff or we’d all stop buying from him.” B.T. Can’t be true, since there’s no way he has ever taken basic economics class. Profits and Earnings Ratio anyone?

Not showing up for classes at Hahvahd however is quite believable for an A/A student like Bammie.

Lourdes on February 13, 2012 at 12:49 PM

Referring to “anonymous sources” is the same thing as referring to “the vast majority (of anyone)” and “everyone thinks”…

I’ll throw in, too, it’s also like referring to “the establishment” and “the elite” and “the status quo”…it’s all the same generalized mish-mash-mush, said to make the speaker appear big-brained when they can’t cite specific sources.

Anyone remember when the late Tony Snow was Chimpy Bush’s WH Press Secretary?

He had the audacity to start something called “Setting the Record Straight”. It was a regular feature of the WH website, and had accurate facts about assorted stories that the Democrat Media were either not “reporting” or in fact totally ignoring.

The Democrat Media did not like this one bit. So they instructed their Attack Dog, Media Matters, to byte back:

Conservatives tout “combative” Snow’s barrage of false attacks on the media

The White House released a series of statements, reportedly initiated by new press secretary Tony Snow, attacking specific media reports and editorials as misleading. Conservatives in the media have touted the statements as indicative of a new willingness on the part of the White House communications office, led by Snow, to call the press on its misinformation. But Media Matters for America has found that, of the six “Setting the Record Straight” releases issued from May 8 to May 11, at least four are highly misleading.

Media Matters then dissects the 4 releases, which were all critical of the “reporting” of the Democrat Media; one was a criticism of a WaPo Editorial and another was a critique of a NYT Editorial.

To try and prove that these releases were “false”, Media Matters relied on one source, and one source only, to “refute” Snow’s claims. They repeatedly quoted their own coverage.

In the end, however, MM could not prove that any of Snow’s press releases were “lies”, so they had to whine that they “misled”.

And we all know who the Democrat Media and their Fluffers reacted when Tony Snow’s colon cancer made a comeback-they wished he would die.

And after they got their wish, they were very classy, to wit:

Good Riddance to Tony Snow

News has been circulating all day about the death of former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow. The former Bush aid and FOX News contributor died at 2am Saturday morning at Georgetown University Hospital. He was 53.

But this is no eulogy.

-snip-

A man of character? I know it’s a standard line now for Bush to praise all of his fallen (most of them jailed or about to be jailed) aids, but to deem Snow–whom most people had nicknamed “Tony Snow job”–a man of character is outright laughable. Even the AP, which broke the story, said of Snow: “With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster’s good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook–if not always a command of the facts–he became a popular figure [with] his White House bosses.” Snow may have been affable and camera friendly, but he was not always in possession of the facts…most likely purposely.

Also, consider the other side of the equation–why the administration went looking for Tony Snow in the first place.

McClellan clearly, visibly appeared uncomfortable dissembling for Bush and company at the podium. Every time McClellan had to “dodge” or “evade” or plain out lie in response to a reporter’s question, he looked like a little piece of his soul was dying.

The administration needed someone who was charming, charismatic, possessed TV-ready good looks and a quick wit to stave off and redirect reporters chasing down unfavorable stories on the White House. Snow was perfect for the job. He fit the physical job description to perfection, and having worked for FOX news for seven years prior, he was perfect for White House Disinformation Minister.

Some reading this may think it inappropriate to “kick the man” when he’s just passed on. I say it’s wholly appropriate considering what he did. This man did not serve the country; he served Bush and Bush alone.

Later in the same “eulogy”:

Let’s do a quick comparison. How much TV material today was generated and/or dedicated to Snow? Not much. Most of what I saw on news networks dealt with Christie Brinkley’s divorce or the new DNA evidence in the JonBennet Ramsey case.

Compare that to the coverage and the length of coverage when Tim Russert passed unexpectedly nearly a month ago.

Maybe I’m a bit of a small person for nailing Snow on the day he died. But the truth is, I’d like to say rest in peace Tony Snow, but really, all I can think of is good riddance.

The truth Team has discovered that Barack Obama really isn’t “black”. His mother was a lily white hippy girl from Kansas. Barack was raised in Hawaii by two guilt ridden white grandparents who taught him to speak the Queens English. He grew up near the beach and smoked pot with his white stoner friends. Hell, he didn’t even play very much on his High School hoops team. Then went to Occidental and Harvard with a bunch of rich white kids being taught by rich white professors. When he decided to go into politics he picked some Chicago sister girl with a big rear end to get married to and started going to an angry black mans church. Michelle had to teach him black slang like “y’all” and such. Taught him the “angry black man” look too. Fast forward to 2008 and a guilt ridden America for some reason felt the need to elect a “Black Man” President. The rest is history.

It’s Hilarious.

Typical….”If at first you dont succeed, fail again the same way”, narcisistic, big-brotheresque, Obama thiking.

Always fun to watch it deployed…..then ultimately fail.

“No capes!”

Kraken on February 13, 2012 at 4:42 PM

We’ve been over it…..The EPA has jurisdiction anyway.

Heard anything about decoder rings?

Tim_CA on February 13, 2012 at 4:47 PM

In 2009 a crack propaganda unit was dispatched by the White House to refudiate any negative stories against the President. They promptly set up a series of maximum security websites on the intertubes. Today, still shilling for their messiah, they survive on Funyuns and Mt. Dew while checking for new entries. If you’ve witnessed dissent – if no one else pays any attention to you – and if you can type in all caps with lots of exclamation points – then maybe you should report it to: The Truth Team.

Heard anything about decoder rings?

Tim_CA on February 13, 2012 at 4:47 PM

I got a message on that, but I can’t decode it…

Kraken on February 13, 2012 at 4:53 PM

Do we get Rings???
Man, I hope we get decoder rings!!

Tim, hope you’re not too miffed after you run upstairs, lock the bathroom door, and find out the message from Little Orphan Obammy is “Be sure and eat your peas!”

susandiane311 on February 13, 2012 at 4:54 PM

So it must not be an attack if we just speak the Truth to Power about Obama’s failures, since it’s the Truth Team after all.

It’s so crushingly sad how amateur Obama and his czars are at running the country. And even more sad how liberals think they are doing a great job as they destroy every ounce of liberty, freedom and prosperity that our ancestors fought and died for.

Truth Teams?

Does that mean Barry and Company are going to come clean on Solyndra, Fast and Furious…………..

GarandFan on February 13, 2012 at 6:02 PM

I’m thinking I should report the deity and all his prophets./

S. D. on February 13, 2012 at 6:12 PM

Hey. Didn’t Barack Obama get a “F” in economics at Columbia ?

Go ahead report me to “Truffer Team”. I will wait for the truth.

J_Crater on February 13, 2012 at 12:01 PM

I think he majored in radicalism and leftism, with a minor in community organizing. He won’t release his college records not because of grades, but because of the subjects.

Dasher on February 13, 2012 at 6:21 PM

Because it worked so well the first two times.
“We just need… rebranding! Yeah, that’s the ticket!”

RadioAngel on February 13, 2012 at 6:44 PM

I had to turn myself in because I have a NOBAMA sticker on my car. I have had so many people ask where they could get one. I also told the Truth Team that I have called obama a stuttering cluster***k of a miserable failure more than 10 times. I guess I’ll be taken away soon. They can try. I have plenty of ammo and Wild Turkey.

Oh snap, dude! You gonna put a link to a mug like that, you need to warn a guy! That scared the crap out of me!

PorchDawg on February 13, 2012 at 4:26 PM

Heh! And BIG too!

I have a few more of those I’m holding onto . . . even a few that I have never actually included in a post on my site. But as circumstances warrant, I’ll give ‘em life.

She wants your name, please, porch dawg!

If nothing else, this administration has inadvertently put some great material out there for us to regurgitate . . . reminders of how devious and ugly they really have been!

Trochilus on February 13, 2012 at 8:22 PM

‘Truth Team’ huh? Has that innocuous but superhero-like quality that sounds so polished but in reality Gestapo, Stasi, Kempeitai and KGB were already taken. Won’t the idiots ever learn?

LizardLips on February 13, 2012 at 9:15 PM

“1984″, the Thought Police, and the Ministry Of Truth came about 28 years too late, eh?

HAnthonyWayne on February 13, 2012 at 10:36 PM

I need to re-chop this for the Truth Team:
